Aging Gracefully...

  • Very evidently, the collective fear of the aging process is driving a growing number of increasingly younger people to turn to extreme measures in order to "anti-age." I find the cosmetic procedure trend to be so disturbing and sad. People are ruining their natural beauty. We see fewer and fewer living examples of natural beauty & natural aging - people aging gracefully. From my perspective, the fear of aging will "age" you worse and faster than the natural process of aging itself. Unfortunately, lies travel faster and further than the truth. I can't control others' beliefs, assumptions, or spreading of falsehoods, but I can speak up for myself. I wanted you to hear these words from my mouth. Assumptions create false narratives with potentially damaging, real consequences. It was important for me to speak out about this topic as I recognize the duty of care that I have as a content creator, particularly to my younger, more impressionable viewers. My call to action is this: Let's normalize aging. Let's embrace aging and opt to age gracefully. (Join me.)

Society sometimes hate natural and healthy women who take care of themselves.
I have been accused at work to have pretty privilege and to eat only salad, simply because I am health conscious.
If people think you are good looking, they sometimes think you have a high opinion of yourself..
I am also introverted and people pick at me for it.
But when I seem too confident they are not happy either..
Conclusion is: people will always make assumptions and judge, no matter what we do..
I think addressing negativity is good sometimes..

I've decided, after a lifetime of down-playing my looks, that I'm just going to be an obnoxiously-hot "MILF".
(I am not a mother, and the term is not my favorite, but you know what I mean).
Be stylishly hot AND slightly intimidating...not "mean", just for the sake of it, but direct eye contact, chest out, chin up, etc.
If someone makes a comment about your looks, humor is one of the best ways to throw it back, especially if there is an audience.
You have to be just a little mean. A little faux-vain. Then they are reassured that you fit a comfortable stereotype, and can feel morally superior, again.
But if you are good-looking AND introverted, they can't get a read on you, so they assume that their own lack of info IS deliberate, cold superiority, on your part. Like a snobby ballerina, or princess.

I am wayyyyy older than you, and going the natural route. I am in my 60s, and it has been a journey of self-acceptance. I have not done any injections/botox/fillers/surgery/surgical peels, etc. I just started tretinoin about 3 months ago, because of you. I love it. I started seeing a difference in 3 weeks, and now at 3 months, I am blown away. I catch myself in the mirror, and my skin hasn't been this radiant in decades. I wish I had known sooner. I have used sunscreen religiously since I was about 22 and have used OTC chemical exfoliants over the years. That also has been the saving grace of my skin for years. Nobody thinks I am my age. Yes, I have good genes, but I also eat very well. I have a green drink that I make everyday, and I don't eat out. I make my own food. All the things you describe, I do too! The benefits STACK.

I realize the intention of this video was not to discuss ASD (but thank you for trusting the community to share that with us) . This video has really educated me and I hope it will do the same for others in understanding how ASD can affect the ability to show facial expression (aside from your choice to not overuse your facial muscles). I hope this knowledge will cause people to be more sensitive and understand that there are people with whom facial expressiveness, doesn’t come naturally, the way it does to many of us. We’re all different which is a beautiful thing; we’re not meant to all look or be the same (and sadly, with Botox and filler, many people are all starting to look the same, which is sad to me.) This video was a great reminder to always strive to be kind, both on You Tube and in every day life because you never know what someone is struggling with and because it’s a free, beautiful gift we can give to each other. I’m very sorry that anyone on here made you feel like you needed to move your face or feel like a dancing monkey. That just hurts my heart. Jennifer, you have SUCH a beautiful smile and I love to hear you are practicing using it but I hope you never feel pressured by society to do so, unless you choose to. I know this video is not intended as a sensitivity lesson but it really was that for me and I hope it will be for others. You’re always kind, in spite of what sounds like may have been some unkind comments. That says so much about you, your strength and your character.
      Blessings to you.

I think your level of transparency is not only refreshing but vital in a society like ours today. Your concern of young viewers (specifically young women and girls) stood out to me as well. It reminds me of the song 'Mrs. Potato Head' by singer Melanie Martinez. A lyric from that song that always breaks me is "It's such a waste, When little girls grow into their mothers face, Well little girls are learning how to cut and paste, And pucker up their lips until they suffocate". Unfortunately as humans we do subconsciously act on the principle of 'monkey see - monkey do'. Your openness to explain in detail not only parts of yourself, but also acknowledge the impact it can have on others and how it ties into your magnified voice as a content creator is so beautiful. Thank you Jennifer for being such a strong beacon of light in such a dark period of time on the internet. Amazing video as always!

For me, I've had a line in my forehead since I was a teenager. So it's not even always due to aging, it can just be how your natural facial structure is. I've been using tretinoin on and off since I was 30 and I'm over 50 now. People do tend to think I'm about 40 I would say.

I wish I found you years ago before getting fillers. I've always been conscious of my health, but somehow my insecurities got me into using these injections without questioning. They changed my features, they migrated and disolving some of them caused me a lot of symltoms I have been trying to heal for the past 4 years, like muscle athrophy, crepey skin, loss of volume in ny hands and feet... I aged at least 10 years. There is a group called botched fillers and hyaluronidase damage support group with thousands of women experiencin similar symtoms.
Is the biggest regret I have.
Thank you for your content and for being so straight forward and honest.
I have been using tretinoin for 4 years and my skin has improved, but the damage from fillers and hyaluronidase is irreversible.
I have started using it on my body as the skin on my legs looks like I am in my late 50s and I am only 40.

I barely see any video on TH-cam with more than 20 minutes, and when I do I always put it on 2x speed, but yours I always enjoy watching entirely because you have always so many good insights... Anyway... I have read some of the comments you address on the video. You should not care those people. Unfortunately this subject of aesthetics and beauty which you also address on your videos attract many superficial, futile and vain people, so you should be aware you will encounter with some foolish viewers, but we who follow your channel for a longer time know already that you are much more than that, and are an integral person... By the way, I wish I was like you, I'm on the side of a very "animated" person when I talk and express myself, and being like you I think it actualy transmit the impression of being a calm and tranquil, self-controled person, which is awesome.

I can't thank you and Dr dray enough, I started using tretinoin 3 years back, prior to that I use to suffer with acne and other skin problems for almost 9 years. Although I was doing alright with my sleep and other lifestyle habits my skin still remained the same. Then I found both of you, started my tretinoin journey and now I have the best skin that I have ever had. I never would have ever imagined someone complementing my skin in the past but these days I hear people tell me I have 'glass skin'. I have really gained some of my lost confidence back ( though I know I should not derive my confidence from external factors, but can't help it I'm human after all 😅). Thank you again for being so straightforward and positive amidst the negativity and mistrust from others and remaining true to yourself, such an inspiration truly.

@@JenniferMyers Indeed. I often wonder if I would’ve been a less anxious, more confident person if I hadn’t grown up in Southern California. The societal pressure for women in the U.S., is ridiculous. I remember when body dysmorphia was first mentioned in the DSM. I was already suffering from it. I wish we lived in a society that valued aging gracefully, intelligence and kindness over youth and physical appearance. I’m 52. While I miss my youth, one thing I really appreciate that I didn’t then is the ability to see the big picture. I also worry a lot less about what people think about me. have you always lived in the United States or did you spend any time growing up overseas? Also, thank you for sharing videos and about your relationship with your mom. It’s wonderful to see how close you both are and how she also chooses to age naturally. I see a lot of mothers in Southern California cave to societal pressures about invasive procedures, which they pass along to their daughters. It’s unfortunate.

Practicing smiling is great! Hold a pen sideways between your teeth. Your brain doesn't know the difference, and it actually will uplift your mood. But, yes, those social smiles do a lot to smooth social interactions. Good for you for noting your felt deficit, and taking the steps to help yourself.
Like I tell my kids (one is twice exceptional) and the other is also gifted, but has some social anxiety--we all have gifts and we all have challenges; even if people don't see them, everyone is working on something. As a long time user of Tretinoin, I can attest to its amazing results. There is a disclaimer: though Tretinoin has immense beneficial effects on the skin, it cannot prevent the structural changes in the face, below the skin surface, that is a normal part of the aging process. We do what we can and happily accept what is natural and normal for all humans as we move through our years.

I refuse to reveal my age now, because no one believes it and people just accuse me of doing something to my face., so I just let them think what they want. Because of the rampant use of dermatologic procedures, people no longer believe that "natural" is still possible. They make you out to be a liar if your skin cheated age "naturally". And yes, having less facial expressions help avoid wrinkles. I spend most of my day by myself and have therefore not much need for facial expressions.
