- This is the First Anniversary of my Garden Channel! One year ago today I decided to separate my House and Garden activities and this dedicated channel began! I have loved making these videos for you, sharing progress in my garden and building a pond and a cabin too! The Last Homely House has its own schedule of crafts, quilting, and all the things I love to do indoors!

April has been a bit of a write off in my Garden, but May arrived in a blaze of glory! Warm sunshine and plenty of jobs to do!
In this video, my daughter in law, Anna helps me Spring Clean the Polytunnel and I finally begin to sow some seeds! Don't worry, they'll catch up! I have plans for some raised beds in the area I call The Hen Run Garden where I hope to grow vegetables behind the six foot fence and keep the deer away!
Also, plenty of flowers! If all goes to plan and these seeds germinate in my polytunnel, I'll have a really colourful flower garden this year!

Just watched and I'm sure the Scabias were labelled Zinnias and vice versa 😅 I've done the same I think with my cauliflower and Broccoli I'll have to wait n see 😂😂
I feel like I’m sitting in the garden with a friend when I watch your videos, Kate. You have such a calm and peaceful demeanor that one can’t help but be at peace watching and listening to you talk about what you love.
I’ve been stuck in hospital since mid Feb with a nasty form of leukaemia. As a very outdoorsy person it’s been extremely tough. I miss my garden ( and my long walks) but I’m very much enjoying yours instead. Thank you for sharing it in all it’s beauty x

I hope Anna realizes how blessed she is to have a mother in law that loves her. Mine didn’t like me from day one, but I was always respectful of her. I could have learned so much from her, it makes me so sad.

So nice to view this video again. Here in Australia we're entering the middle month of winter. What a lovely surprise to turn over your calendar and see the Seed Packet quilt while the weather here is a bit cold. Sunny today, but quite cold. So beautiful to see those colourful flowers on your quilt on the calendar!

Lovely visit. Thank you. So, you live in a zone 8. No wonder your garden is flourishing. We live in zone 4-5, and our iris are still in their budding stage. Thank you so much for sharing your garden and tunnel with us. The drone shots were great. It gives us a better perspective of where everything is. You have a rather large yard to care for and many planting boxes. How fortunate. We have such poor soil, that I can't even grow mint!!!!!!! I never need to worry about it taking over my garden. And YES, it is GREAT to have help in the garden...........Can't wait for the next garden shots when the green roof goes on. What a stellar idea. Blessings to you from New Hampshire in the US.

I am so envious of your clean beds and organization of everything! The birds' eye view is incredible. This is so inspirational. Hoping to finally get things cleaned up here in June and just buy starts to be able to grow a few things.

Enjoy. Oops you did plant Zinnia's first. Nevermind it'll be a nice surprise! On the veg front I'd recommend Hamburg parsley. You can eat the tops like parsley and roots are like parsnip. Fantastic dual purpose plant. We grew them in raised beds first and they were a huge success!

I'm in the Welsh valleys on the side of a valley. Only enough space outside for a few plants and a mini greenhouse but just down the road I have an allotment with my daughter. What a year it has been here; were are on our third attempt at getting our seeds going as it has been so cold and wet and on two occasions the storms blew the little greenhouse over with all the tiny seedlings in it!
Still we have finally got some things in the ground and are hoping for better weather now we are halfway through May. The allotment is my happy place next to a little river and lovely to just sit and listen to all the birds etc. This year we are hoping to turn our little tin hut into a "tea room" so that we can spend the morning down there.
I used my sieve yesterday to eliminate larger pieces of bark etc. Loved the outcome as the soil for my seeds it is so fine. Thanks for this garden tip.

Kate, I've often wondered why your gardens seem to be so much ahead of mine here in the northwest corner of the lower peninsula of Michigan. You just answered my question when you said you are in Zone 8. We are just barely in Zone 6. That being said I am thrilled to have a new podcast of The Last Homely Garden to watch on this cold (53F)and rainy day in MI.
Hello from the USA Kate…what a delightful video and what a dear person you are…thank you for sharing.
You should be able to plant the zinnia seeds directly into the garden. We do in Canada and they grow like weeds. I like to scatter plant mine and put a thin layer of potting soil on top. Saves the step of pre-planting in the greenhouse and then having to plant them again out in the garden. They are very hardy robust and dead simple to grow. I often mix 3 or 4 varieties together and the result is a surprise and very nice surprise.
Thank you for the birdsong. So much rain here lately, the birds are rather quiet.
I've been pulling my own ground elder out. But also moving a cement bench to a new view under a tree and expanding some beds to have room for cutting flowers and honey berries. I do enjoy a good putter around when it's not over 26 celsius (I converted for you). It gets rather hot and humid around the Chicago area by mid June so I work like a fiend now so I can take it slower in the heat. Looking forward to the roof project.
I do so enjoy seeing how your garden grows and blooms. Thank you for sharing. I live in the high desert in Northern Nevada and we also have a short growing season and I did not get my Mother's green thumb. But I keep trying 🙃.

Oh Kate! I'm in Zone 8 and everything here is extravently growing; I especially love the peonies. It's such a joyous time, every day with me hands run the soil. Your garden is lovely and I always like it how your family helps.
It's wonderful that you have help - and that you pay them with lovely meals too! :D I'm looking forward to seeing things grow. My, that's a large piece of property! How marvelous to be able to create such spaces and you have the rain to support it all.

Kate, Your garden looks lovely💖 I am so ready to start playing in my garden in Ontario, Canada. However, yesterday, I slipped on the deck in the rain and twisted my knee. So now I am resting, icing, compressing, and elevating my knee. It will heal, and then gardening can begin in earnest!! It is lovely to be able to visit your garden with you while I heal, thank you🤗

Well, now I’ve become bed-bound. But, unlike your baby seeds, I will not be bursting into life again (or will I?). I love watching your podcast as well as one closer in vicinity to me, “Garden Answer” from Ontario, Oregon. Ant is fun to watch as well. Kate, I had a pond at my last home and loved it. I can't believe I've never heard of a green roof! I am SOOO excited to see this come to life (literally!) - what a fantastic idea! I don't know how you come up with the ideas you do, but I consider myself a creative but you far outdo me (and inspire me greatly!). You have such a lovely family and it is, as you said, so wonderful to have that little bit of help and company when you're doing a big job like the poly-tunnel (which, by the way, looks pretty spiffy since you power washed it!). I recently bought a rotary sieve. Not having been well for a couple of years, I don’t have the strength to to hand sieve, but with the hand cranked sieve, I was able to sieve 3 bags of home made compost in o time.
Oh my! Totally love! We were out 6 hours in our gardens. 54!F We have a green roof. The biggest thing is adding enough soil so you can water well in dry seasons. I planted mine for years but it never took off cause I got to busy with other summer things. Our green roof is over a chicken house. It grows baby birch trees😅
Beautifully sweet, as always! I'd love to hear more about those mini greenhouse towers and that awesome looking composter! Lol Also I don't know what some of those flowers were... some I've never seen here in Kentucky. 😊💜
I love your garden, such beautiful flowers. I love my Penstemon barbatus, it is a hummingbird magnet. My giant hyssop gets crazy numbers of very tame bees.
I am eating my late winter greens, but my summer greens are coming along nicely. I planted 4 bitty native plum seedlings, 2 have leafed out already, yay! The 2 on the sw side. The 2 on the ne side haven't leafed out yet.
I haven't planted a lot yet, my raised beds are pretty full of perennial edibles. Asparagus are over and one is seeding out.
