Hey! I have 10 red eye tetras in a 53 gallon community aquarium, but they've been killing my guppies (9 dead) and bitting the tail of my gambas 😢
Why?? They're supposed to be pacific, they have plenty of plants, floating plants, food, places to hide etc etc

Red Eye Tetras (Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae) are generally considered peaceful, but they can exhibit aggressive behavior under certain conditions. One potential reason for this aggression is their need to be in larger groups. While you have a decent number of ten, sometimes a larger school can help diffuse aggression. Additionally, even though a 53-gallon tank is sizable, it might still lead to territorial disputes if the tetras feel crowded or stressed.
Feeding habits also play a role in fish behavior. If the tetras are not getting enough food or the right type of food, they might start nipping at other fish. Ensuring a varied diet can sometimes help reduce aggression. Stress is another factor that can make fish more aggressive. Any form of stress, such as water quality issues, sudden changes in the environment, or inadequate hiding spots, can trigger this behavior.
Compatibility with other fish is crucial. Guppies and gambas (shrimp) are generally more peaceful and have flowing tails or appendages that can attract nipping from more aggressive fish like tetras. To mitigate this issue, consider increasing the number of Red Eye Tetras to create a larger school, which can help reduce aggression within the group and towards other fish. Ensure there are plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers to break up the line of sight and reduce territorial behavior. Regularly test water parameters to maintain ideal conditions for all tank inhabitants. If one or two tetras are particularly aggressive, consider isolating them temporarily to see if the aggression subsides. If the aggression continues, you might need to rehome the guppies and shrimp or consider a different community setup that better accommodates the behavior of your Red Eye Tetras.

I introduced four into my tank because they look nice. They gradually killed all my neon tetras.

when i meet with red eye tetras here for the first time,i came up with a female bitterling fish that i hunted with a cast net in a natural river,i reckon both are very alike, but your red eye tetras are more expensive and precious in my opinion,i've never seen this red eye tetra in natural rivers and some Chinese aquatic stores, your introduction on the species broadens my view, nice video👍👍

yeah,do you think Red Eye Tetra can get along well with Bitterling fish and asian crucian carp, you know,i like mix them together for feeding😀

    • @AquaWorldInfo

It's crucial to consider the compatibility of fish species when mixing them together, especially for feeding purposes. Red Eye Tetras are generally peaceful, but introducing them with Bitterling fish and Asian Crucian Carp might not be ideal due to potential differences in their dietary requirements, behaviors, and tank size needs.
Each species might have unique feeding habits and tank conditions that could pose challenges when combined. It's essential to research and ensure that the fish you're mixing have similar dietary needs and compatible behaviors to maintain a harmonious and healthy environment in the tank.

@@AquaWorldInfo yep,you are an expert in ornamental fish while i'm a freshman🤭,what you said really inspires me a lot,you konw, i 'm a dude who shows interest in blending different fishes together, do you operate an aquarium?

@tonnyparkour8536 I'm glad to hear that my insights have been helpful! While I do personally operate an aquarium, I do have a wealth of knowledge and experience in ornamental fish. Blending different fish species can be a rewarding endeavor, but it requires careful consideration of compatibility, tank size, and dietary needs to ensure the well-being of all the fish involved. If you have any questions or need advice on specific fish combinations or aquarium-related topics, feel free to ask!

Great- they’ve now created balloon red eye tetras. Someone thought it was a good idea to breed short-bodied, deformed fish to make a quick buck.

The introduction of balloon varieties in fish breeding, including the Balloon Red Eye Tetra, has indeed sparked debates within the aquarium community. While some enthusiasts appreciate the unique appearance of these fish, others express concerns about potential health issues and ethical considerations associated with breeding for exaggerated physical traits. It's essential for breeders and hobbyists to prioritize the well-being and welfare of the fish, ensuring that breeding practices align with ethical standards and promote the overall health of the species. Thank you for bringing attention to this topic.

Add that they are not for planted aquariums they destroyed my hygrophila coriambosa🥲

It's important to note that Red Eye Tetras can be known for their active swimming and may not be the best choice for planted aquariums, as you've experienced with your hygrophila coriambosa. Their behavior might lead to plants being uprooted or damaged. Thanks for sharing your observation to help others considering these tetras in a planted setup!
