    Shopping List for How to Install a House Hydrant:
    House hydrant kit [amzn.to/2ZQsDTf]
    Tools for How to Install a House Hydrant:
    Emery cloth [amzn.to/2MX73dT]
    Pipe cutter [amzn.to/2Ljq1Js]
    Screwdriver [amzn.to/2N3Nlxd]
    Oscillating saw [amzn.to/2MWl2Au]
    Solder [amzn.to/34skWGv]
    Torch [amzn.to/2Lk34pF]
    Steps for How to Install a House Hydrant:
    1. Turn off the water supply to the outdoor spigot.
    2. Clean the cut point downstream of the water supply valve with an emery cloth.
    3. Cut the pipe with a pipe cutter. Some excess water may drain out.
    4. Unscrew the outdoor spigot using a screwdriver and remove it.
    5. The house hydrant is round; using a pencil, outline the hydrant head on the siding.
    6. Using an oscillating saw, cut out the outlined portion of the siding to fit the head.
    7. Insert the new pipe and house hydrant head into the hole in the siding.
    8. Place a bead of silicone caulking around the hydrant head and secure it with screws using a driver.
    9. Place the operating bar inside the pipe until the O-ring is seated at the edge of the pipe and is even with the threads.
    10. Connect the spring with a new piece of copper pipe by using a torch to solder the two together away from the new hydrant head pipe.
    11. Use the torch to solder the remaining copper pipe connection back to the main water supply.

    Finally! Hallelujah!! I can finally remove that pesky hose bib that works with EVERY hose sold in North America and replace it with one that requires an expensive hunk of plastic that I can't find at the local hardware store. I mean, all this time I've been using a hose bib that works as intended, requires no special adapters or tools, and doesn't drip when I remove the hose, is inexpensive, and has proven to be trouble-free for decades.
    How did I get by without this? I mean, if I added up all the times I was walking INCHES from my house and hit myself on the hose bib, I'd realize that it has never happened once.
    Now, if only someone would produce a product another product that has the solution to a problem nobody has, we'd be all set. Nice infomercial though folks.

    Talk about a solution to a problem that didn't exist!!! Why in the world would anyone think that product is an improvement to a traditional valve/spigot? I wouldn't take one of those if they were giving them away, installing them for free, and throwing in a $50 gas card.

  • @Dan-qk4ns

    I have actually replaced about 5 of those style faucets because people don't like them, primarily because they are hard to connect, can be finicky and spray water and the fact that they can leak all over siding, etc. On a different note, I wonder why I never see Richard using the Milwaukee m12 tubing cutter?

  • @EightiesTV

    Once installed, the o-ring can't be changed without cutting the pipe. The rubber washer on the previous frost-proof valve costs about 5 cents and can be changed in two minutes for another 20 years of leak-free operation. There is one advantage to this system, though. Homeowners kill these rubber washers by cranking down on the valve way past the point where they shut off because they see the residual water flowing out and think it's needs to be closed tighter. This valve eliminates premature damage from abuse. But the o-ring will still wear from abrasives in the water and from chlorine attack.

    • @charleshodgdon6168
      @charleshodgdon6168 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That smaller new piece is threaded on both ends. It would be a little more work, but not much. Unscrew the piece outside from the house, unscrew the two new pieces, and you are in direct contact with the o-ring.

I had an emergency on my street and ran out during a hot dry summers day and grab my neighbours hose to save his house from burning down when the house behind his was on fire. Honestly if they didn't have a working garden hose and good quality cart we would have lost more then 1 house as it was 20+ mins before the fire department arrived.

      It depends on what kind of faucet you have. He was correct when he showed her that she did not need to shut off her water as she had a frost free faucet installed. It also depends on where you live. In the south it may not get cold enough for long enough to need to shut off the water in the winter. North of the Virginia/North Carolina border you will need to shut off the water if you have only a surface faucet.

      There's a 1/4 turn valve fitting available with a standard threaded hose fitting where you can either add a hose, or better yet, add a splitter so that you can then turn on the hose or faucet whenever desired.
      Then, before the frost season, simply unscrew the valve fitting and you're all set for the winter months.

    Rich always mentions that "You've got full city water pressure coming in through here...." Well, not necessarily. If you're running City water pressure directly into the house and elsewhere, you're putting extra strain on your system. Here in L.A., we have a pressure regulator installed between the street and the house, which cuts the pressure in half (from 100 psi down to 50 psi) prior to entering the house and outside faucets. I would imagine they're available all over the country, and not exclusive to the L.A. market. You just need to check your outside plumbing connections leading into the house to determine if you have one. If not, it would be a good idea to have a professional install one. They do need to be replaced over time, so keep an eye on it, as well. Replacing a pressure regulator can be done by the homeowner; just remember to turn off the water pressure at the street before proceeding. You may be able to buy a replacement regulator at Lowe's or Home Depot; if not, you'll need to go to a plumbing supply store to get one. You can 1) remove it and bring it with you, or 2) write the model number(s) down for the guy behind the counter; a photo of the set-up taken on your cell phone would also be helpful. That person will also ask you where you live, and can size the unit and pressure reduction to those used in your neighborhood.

      Gimmick. Adding another part to a function increases complexity which in turn increases what can go wrong. Lose that hose adapter and you no longer have an outside faucet.
      I live in Southern California so zero chance of frost - which gives me options. I've always replaced all those crappy hose bibs with ball valves and adapters (to hose thread). Rubber seat washers last only a couple of years, then they start to leak. The seats get pitted so new washers immediately get damaged and the handles get stiff. O-rings seem to be a bit better but for how long? I've never had a ball valve seize up, leak or fail.
      You could have a ball valve in cold climates, but then you'd have to turn off the supply inside the house before cold weather - where I'd also use a ball valve.

    I just cut off my copper pipe indoors and sweated on a PEX nipple and shut off. All that goes outdoors is a PEX pipe to a Pex shut off with standard threads. The plastic pipe doesn't give me freezing problems and should any problem show up it takes about 5 minute to switch out.

      i agree. that ending ruined it. its going to leave a water streak on the side of your house eventually. also, you cant get water out without using the hose, which also sucks. lets say you want to fill a bucket with water - you have to get the whole hose from the shed to do that.

    • @_P0tat07_
      @_P0tat07_ 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kopsu I'm also concerned about water left in the house, does the hose side quick connect have a valve that stops any water in the hose from draining out? What about when it gets cold out? Either take the hose apart and drain it or let the hose get ruined. Honestly the system is lacking. I do give credit for being a unique idea. But if you really wanted a quick release, use the anti freeze valve and get the quick connects from the plumbing section at your local hardware store

    • @billybassman21
      @billybassman21 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I liked the long one with the knob on it. It works as a standard faucet and prevents freezing by having the washer far back. This concept is unique, but seems like it would be more of an inconvenience.
      I live in Houston. We only have to worry about pipes freezing about every 20 years, but it is a serious issue due to the fact our pipes are not buried deep enough on insulated properly in the walls/attic. On the outside faucets I use an insulated protector over them when it is going to be below freezing for a long time.

    My 20 yr old home has 3 50-gallon water heaters - when they started to fail, I looked into moving onto a whole-home tankless water heating system - the est’d cost was about $15K for a 6K sq ft home here in North TX, whereas the cost to just replace the 3 tanks was about $3K... imagine the upgrade economics are similar for a lot of a home’s core systems...
