    I am actually very glad Oliver didn't take over the daily show from Jon Stewart, he had to be let free. The fact is that John Oliver's show fixed everything wrong with the daily show, which was the network restrictions and the celebrity interviews. Last Week Tonight has taken what Jon Stewart started to a whole another level, and i really hope his show lasts as long as the daily show did.

      I think that's the idea of a talk show. Personally, I think it's better when the guest has the spotlight rather than the host dominating their time. To me, the host is meant to be a facilitator and push the guest to control the spotlight

      piyaltaru A good talk show host should have an innate understanding of when to let their guests 'run', when to reel them in and when to coax them and make them feel at ease due to nerves etc.
      I don't rate Jimmy as highly as Conan (but then I don't think anyone's in Conan's league overall) but he's going to improve over time. They all do. Plus Jimmy has the advantage of a great rapport with his 'support' players, Steve and the band.
      The clunkiest show right now is Colbert's. They haven't found their groove at all.

      The bit from 0:49 - 01:08 ish is more natural, the one 12s in is exaggerated Hollywood Cockney mockery. It’s the “seven an’ a ‘alf ye-ahs” and “I fort we…” bits, which is very London.
      Britain has a whole ton of variations, regional words and accents though, from crisp Home Counties RP to country burr to harsh urban variations that can change over what must appear to an American as only a short distance. Sorta reflects the cultural melting pot but maybe also minimal internal movement until comparatively recently (Industrial Age maybe?).

I've watched hundreds of these videos and I don't know why I've chosen this one to finally snap, but I had to put my insignificant voice out there to say that I love Jimmy Fallon, I watch this channel for him, I think he's hilarious and charming, his boundless enthusiasm for everything and bumbling personality is delightful, and the overwhelming number of hateful comments criticizing the way he laughs saddens me every day.

    There shouldn't be 'fallout' when a man sheds a tear. That was an honest display of emotion and not something to be ashamed of.
    Oh a side note; John Oliver speaks the truth and is funny while he's at it. Watch his show, regardless of your political affiliation.
    Oh and Fallon is a pogue. What a shitty interviewer.

    • @pintpot
      @pintpot 10 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      You are right about displays of emotion, of course, and British people would agree with you. This is a good example of the kind of cultural misunderstanding that results from the British sense of humour.
      His friends were joking. It wasn't a fallout at all. Fallon completely got this, I think. Oliver impersonated his friends in a (probably exaggerated) London accent. This kind of ribbing happens a lot in the south-east of England. Maybe you've seen the emotionally repressed James May and Jeremy Clarkson make fun of the more American-thinking Richard Hammond in a similar way on 'Top Gear'?
      When he says "We're suspicious of emotion. It's weakness", this is British self-deprecation. He's showing that he's able to laugh at himself, which is a greatly-valued trait in British culture. To emphasise that he is not serious, he goes on to say "You're bringing shame upon your family name to show emotion of any colour", which surely no one could take seriously!
      It's weird that John Oliver isn't at all famous in the UK. He was briefly on shows like "Have I Got News For You" and "The News Quiz", but then he got a job writing for American TV, so he left - our loss!

    Either Jimmy forgot...or conveniently "forgot" that he got all choked up when he did his last Late Night show. Search 'Jimmy gets emotional' :)
    There's just something so endearing about a man crying though

    • @doraaaa0613
      @doraaaa0613 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's fucking adorable, I don't know why. But I never find an urge to laugh when a man (or anyone, really) cries, I have an urge to bundle them up in blankets and go "Awwwwww!" while I clutch my hands to my heart.

      +sarcastic bowl of cornflakes The fact that you assume crying is a copied expression rather than an involuntary response tells me you may have sociopathic ideation. You might want to think on that a bit.

  • @1TrueJuliet

    John Oliver: "Yeah, we're suspicious of emotion, it's a weakness."
    Jimmy Fallon: *laughs* "You consider it a weakness?"
    John Oliver: "Yes, it is a huge weakness, you'll bring shame upon your family name to display emotion of any color."
    So basically Sherlock's entire life.

    What they don't mention is that the clip they had just shown John was not only a surprise at an already emotional time, but the clip ended with the last few bars of "God Save The Queen." I dare any man to not get a bit choked up on hearing his national anthem. :-)

      Ghost_Hands Actually RyanGiggsOBE is correct. David Mitchell was president of the Footlights in what I think was Richard Ayoade’s and John Oliver’s first year. There’s a picture of the 3 of them (and another guy) that you can find online. David Mitchell included it in his autobiography (I think it’s called Back Story).

    That's true about English and emotions, well if you're a guy. My parents were raised by English dads. My father was very emotionless. He stuffed it down until he had two heart attacks and a stroke. Anyhoo....I am glad John O has at least somewhat left that behind.
