Barbara Danley I think mtb7001 was comparing Roger Miller's to Randy Travis's. Of course, Roger Miller wrote it but other people have their versions of it. You are , of course, correct, his is the best. I remember listening to this with my father. He listened to it with my daughter, Beth. She had it played at her wedding in remembrance of him as he passed away 7 months before her wedding.
You're right, Douglas Reeves! It was sung, among others, by Dean Martin in records, live in the Frank Sinatra Spectacular (1965) at the Kiel Opera House , St.Louis and then in his show with Roger himself. It has been a great Roger Miller's hit!
I am from Santa Fe, New Mexico. When I returned home after college in 1975, Roger Miller lived just outside of town, by Glorieta Pass. Sometimes he would come into the Forge Lounge at the Inn of the Governors Hotel in Santa Fe. He would often drop in and sit-in on the stage, playing many of his hits. He would do this for fun.....no money. And my friends and I loved hearing him. Rest in Peace Roger.....you are a total Santa Fean in my book.
When I was a kid I was able to see Roger Miller's at the county Fair. He was walking through the fairgrounds right past me. I was so in awe I just stared as he walked by. He was close enough I could of touched him. I couldn't make a sound.
I love this song and I love to hear Roger Miller sing. It brings back memories of when I was a little girl and my mother would sing along with it. She loved this song so much.
Babybluebbw same age as Bobby Darin :-( ...but RM is so much luckier to have lived much longer than BD. Wish BD also sang this very nice, catchy song :-)
I'll be damned. I also came here on Jan 2. Exactly 5 years later. Not on purpose. Robin Hood led me here, lol. But I always loved RM. Happy Heavenly 85th Birthday, Roger Miller. 😊
I've always liked this song, and the oldies radio stations still play it. Don't listen to the radio anymore because I get few radio stations where I live, and I don't like those few. But I can get all of the songs, talk, and news I want online, so I still get to enjoy lots of great entertainment, and all just for the price of my monthly internet service. I don't pay for any online pay tiers, because there's tons of free programs available online, usually with commercials or ads. I'm older than this song, so I grew up with commercially supported TV and radio, so I'm used to and okay with that format. Anyway, I enjoy offerings like this, so thanks for posting it. And what a fun song.🤗

On this day in 1965 {April 9th} Roger Miller performed "King of the Road" on the 'Ready Steady Goes Live!' episode of the British musical program, 'Ready Steady Go!'... At the time the song was at position #26 on the United Kingdom's Singles chart, five weeks later it would peak at #1 {for 1 week}... On the day of Roger Miller's appearance on 'Ready Steady Go!', "King of the Road" was in it's second of two weeks at #6 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, three weeks earlier it had peaked at #4 {for 1 week} and it spent thirteen weeks on the Top 100.. Roger Dean Miller passed away at the young age of 56 on October 25th, 1992... May he R.I.P.
Listening today, remembering my dear Daddy, who died 8 years ago. Roger was one of his favorites and he raised my sisters and I have to a diverse appreciation for music. This is nothing like what it out today. Roger was amazing. Husbands and Wives is an incredible ballad. I'm sure it was a satirical move to include a QR code linking this video, but thanks Tosh for introducing Mr Miller to the youngin's. RIP Dad. You are sorely missed and will always be my King of the Road.

Great song, fell in love with it first time I heard it, I was only young and sang it all the time, I thought he was fantastic. Many thanks for this, Anna.

Followed this link eventually after watching his episode of Quincey M.E. during Lockdown 2 (Covid) 2020. Great guy and song. Disaster singing about cigarettes that killed him at a silly age by today's standards. Great voice.
I have to admit that I first heard of him when he provided the voice of the rooster narrator in Disney's version of "Robin Hood". I've since heard a few of tunes. Sounds like he had quite the career.
My mom thought I should learn to play the clarinet. I gave it a go, including 4 years learning it from the guy who taught Herb Albert to play the trumpet. The truth: It bored hell out of me. To try and interest me, the music teacher had me pick out a popular song book. It included "King of the Road" which I loved. I played it over and over and over. I played up tempo, down tempo, breathy (wind instrument term) and clean. Every way I could think of. Next lesson the music teacher said something like, "Finally, you're playing music not just notes."
who can argue that Roger Miller's King of the Road is an old time classic and it's still catchy today??
his version is "the" one, there is no doubt
mtb7001, 'his version'? He *wrote* the song!

I'm sorry for losing your dad so early in life. May you feel his live always. 🌹

Probably not rich but I'm sure it helped.
Hit songs made producers money not the artists. It was a big racket back then.

When this song was released I was in high school. Miller inspired me to write songs and he became my songwriting idol.
This song was first released in 1964, boy did I love it then on the Juke Box.
AM radio, 1964 was on a tube console, 1965 on a brand new 7 transistor radio you could carry in your pocket.
My first grade class sang this Song for a School Show in 1969. I still remember it well!
