Well, if you have to have a best and worst of the series, then this would be the worst. With so many they can't all be zingers. Still not that bad, and it means the rest are better.
I’m a reformed naysayer… I think watching here made it so much fun that I just had a great time with both the silliness and the misplaced ambition. I congratulate William Shatner for the crazy choices he mad. I’m a newly minted V fan.
If "The Final Frontier" had been a standalone film, it would honestly be remembered is an okay 80's sci fi movie. It's really only terrible in the context of Star Trek. It's a ton of Shatner's baggage, and comes nestled in between objectively better takes on the franchise. If almost the exact same movie had been "Roger Corman Presents: Steller Wanderers: A Last Frontier," people would call it a lost gem and say it was a shame that there was never a Stellar Wanderers II.
The phonetic similarity of Sha-kah-ree to Sean Connery is deliberate, as they wanted to get Sean Connery to play Sybok, but Connery did Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade instead. So, they cast Lucille Ball's son-in-law in the part.
I hadn't even realized Laurence Luckinbill was married to Lucie Arnaz... but I was pretty young when they got married. I remember Luckinbill from some TV appearances (an episode of "Columbo" comes to mind), and Desi Arnaz, Jr from "Automan" and a couple episodes of random TV shows here and there... but Lucie completely flew under my radar.
Sean Connery would have definitely been interesting, but I dunno if I could handle a Vulcan with a Scottish accent. V gets enough hate as it is, I can only imagine the pile on from that!
This movie contributed to the legacy of the original crew, just not as much as other movies. The music is wonderful and the scene where Kirk refuses Sybok’s gift is a great one.
"I don't want my pain taken away I *NEED* my pain" was just an incredible sense of Kirk's own complete knowledge of self. Kirk has unwavering confidence.
I love this film, despite all its shortcomings. Jerry Goldsmith's score is stellar, the performances are great, and there is an interesting idea at the base of it. And! without it, we would never have heard of marsh melons. 🙂
Man I love this movie. I didn't find out people hayed it until we got a dial-up modem. I actually love the story, dialogue, and the character interactions, I think it is better than some of the other movies in this regard.
I always loved Captain Klaa. Unlike Kruge, who wanted to use Genesis to destroy a civilization, he wasn't evil. All he wanted was a worthy opponent. And he ended up admiring Kirk. Plus he looked like a badass.
Captain Klaa also cameos in Nicholas Meyer's _Star Trek: VI: The Undiscovered Country_ (played by the same actor) as one of the interpreters at Kirk and McCoy's trial on the Klingon homeworld, for a really nice bit of connective-tissue between this film and the next one.
I did like Kirk's "I need my pain!" speech, truer words were never spoken. The three last TNG movies were also scored by Jerry Goldsmith (First Contact being the best, both the movie itself and its music).
Kirk always had the great speeches. His speech in Return To Tomorrow was his best about the dangers about being on a Starship. "I'm in command, I could order this, but I'm not because Dr. McCoy is right about pointing out the enormous danger potential in any contact of life of intelligence".....to "Risk....risk is our business. That's what this Starship is all about, that's why we are aboard her". Something Jen missed. It was season 2 episode 20 just in case Jen reads this.
This movie is basically one big "The Original Series"-Tribute: Strong Focus on the Trio of Kirk/Spock/McCoy and their relationship, the Enterprise getting hijacked, the Crew fighting against a being that pretends to be Godlike but really isnt... And *that* McCoy-Scene hits hard. Indeed, the entire Observation Longue-Scene does.
It's really the most TOS of all the Trek movies, I'll agree with that, and why I don't hate on it as much as other Trekkies do. It's just an enjoyable little romp through the galaxy aboard the starship Enterprise, without having any impact on anything to come after-just like TOS episodes were.
Yes. And the actor that played the young version of Spock's father Sarek was totally believable in that one scene. It was uncanny. That's what Discovery should have done. Found an actor that looked like a younger version of Mark Lenard.
Scotty's accent is about as accurate as Chekov's. The guy giving Kirk the orders was Harve Bennet the writer/producer. The Vulcan Lyre at the end was used by Spock on the TV show - that's what you get for skimming the series!
One of the best stories I heard about this film comes from a convention where Walter Koenig was a GOH, and during a panel discussion, someone said that 'Shatner should never be allowed to direct again' to which Walter replied 'No...William Shatner was a fine director... He should never be allowed to *Write* again...'
In all fairness his original treatment was heavily re-written by Harve Bennett and David Loughery. Funny they're never mentioned at all when people criticise the film. And Walter on the subject of writing my friend.....Shatner's original vision for the film was a lot darker and even deeper and i think after the success of the "lighter" Star Trek 4 Paramount didn't have the balls to tackle it.

Jen! You're going to like this one...James Doohan is Canadian. I once saw him at a Star Trek convention. He recounted how they were debating the ethnicity of Scotty at the time. He said a line of dialogue, using a bunch of dialects. It was pretty hilarious! :)
Not only a finger shot off but I believe 3 other bullets in that incident. A metal cigarette case his brother gave him stopped a bullet that might have been fatal.
Final Frontier was saved by the Row Row Row Your Boat at the end I think and the big three pairing of this movie and the best quote from Dr. McCoy "I liked him better before he died". The best part was that long awaited special origin story about Dr. McCoy and why he was always like he was. That was the big surprise for me.
IMO, ST V is a great story. The execution was the problem, and that lay with the way the studios kept reducing the funds in the middle of filming it. Things they planned to do they couldn't, but the set ups were there. Despite that, I still like it for what it brings to the trio.
I'm dissapointed with the resolution. Something so epic as a search for god, solved by a bird of prey is anti-climactic. It should have been more wiley.
This is why I hate this movie, the wasted potential. The basic plot, a malevolent god-like entity using a prophet to escape a prison, is a good premise and very much in line with Star Trek's history of god-like beings. Kirk's speech about needing his pain is fantastic. But it's just so poorly executed.
This exactly. Shatner had wanted to make it more action-packed and epic in scope, but the studio slashed the budget to a ridiculous level. So the script had to be re-written, and the production had to go with a cut-rate VFX shop. I can't imagine what drove Paramount to sabotage their own tentpole property, but I can only assume it was down to a lack of confidence in Shatner as a director.
Which Uniform do you think she would look best in? The 2260s, (TOS traditional) or the late 2270s-2340s (Wrath of Khan-Just before TNG)? Then TNG uniforms kept changing. And for the best season, one, and two are made of spandex and we’re very ugly. Season 3 and beyond use the more muted color, which is a lot more pleasing, and the material wasn’t as formfitting. Can you have the DS9’s/Voyager jumpsuits. And most peoples favorite, the TNG movie /DS9 jacket and trousers. Say what you will, but I’m always partial to the STO Odessey Uniforms. Sure they could use more color But nothing brings all the classic eras of trek in one uniform style. He even brought back the skirts and boots (optional) in the female duty uniform. What they didn’t really designed the skirt with a matching pattern to the jacket. Your only option is the cadet pattern which does not match.
The best parts of this movie are any scenes with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelly. Those scenes were pure gold. DeForest Kelley also had an incredible scene later on in the movie. Fun fact: The last scene with Kirk, Spock and Bones singing "Row Your Boat" and then the credits rolled was the last scene with the three main characters together. However Shatner, Nimoy and Kelly would remain good friends up until Kelly's death in 1999.
Sorry. It's been a long time since I saw the 6th film. I read an article about three years ago stating that about Kirk, Spock and Bones and went off of that. I will have to see the 6th film again.
It gets to me that I still remember seeing this in theaters as a kid. At the time I didn’t like it but it grew on me once I got more into Star Trek fandom. I think what makes this work for me is the trio of Kirk, Spock and McCoy. They’ve always had that relationship but this was one of the new times each character had time to shine and play off each other. I believe this was released around the time when The Next Generation started. The sixth film is one of my favorites. Before TNG you have to see a few TV episodes. There are totally must sees just like the OST films.
I love the whole idea of Star Trek. I read somewhere they cut funding off for Shatner and he couldn't afford the effects he wanted for the film which explains why it looked so weird in certain parts.
The whole movie was made "on the cheap". II, III and IV all had effects created by Industrial Light and Magic, while this one was handled by some random other team and it shows. They were also supposed to get a huge "angels and demons wrath of God" battle at the end and all of that was cut and replaced by the blue cloud that fired laser eye-beams. There were serious problems with the plot, but having it all look so comparatively cheap next to the others certainly did not help.
Jen, I haven't seen this one in years, but I enjoyed watching along with you. I never liked the deity plot, but I did enjoy Kirk's challenge, "What does God need with a starship?"
That’s George Murdock as “God”. He’s a character actor or a crap ton of westerns TV shows in the in the 50s to the 80s. He’s got at least one more roll in Star Trek TNG is season three finale the best of both worlds. Who plays Admiral “Oh I hate them Borg” Hanson.
5 is not my favorite, but it is still characters I enjoy so it's comforting to me, just like I can always put TNG on any random episode and just be calm.
To quote Futurama: Leonard Nimoy: "You have to respect your actors. When I directed "Star Trek IV", I got a magnificent performance out of Bill because I respected him so much." William Shatner: "And when I directed "Star Trek V", I got a magnificent performance out of me because I respected me so much."
The only good thing about this movie, is it gets you closer to 6: The Undiscovered Country, which I think is up there with Wrath of Khan as one of the best Star Trek films out there.
Undiscovered Country is next! Then we hopefully get some TNG soon. I'm really nervous about Jenn missing key TNG episodes. TNG is much harder when you just watch top 10ish episodes a season. That can be different than top 10 key episodes.
Meh, I feel like you can watch the best 20 of the entire season, and get a good sense of it. Hell, almost nothing of season 1 is worth watching, and season 2 is only slightly better.

The probe the Klingons destroyed was suppose to be one of the Voyage probes.Also according to the novel of the movie,McCoy changed the information in the computer from marshmallow to marsh melon because he knew Spock would look up camping on Earth and the McCoy wanted to play a joke on him.🖖🖖🖖
*Adjusts nerd glasses* It was a Pioneer probe, but it would have been funnier if they actually had used a Voyager probe because of the tie-in to The Motion Picture! That tidbit from the novel is hilarious, I'd never heard that before.
I agree that out of the TOS movie series, this one is the weakest, but it still has its moments and can be an enjoyable watch. Plus, after learning more about the backstage difficulties while producing this film, like ILM being unavailable, I appreciate the effort a bit more.
In one of the promotional interviews prior to this film's release in theaters, Bill Shatner, with a straight face, listed The Three Stooges as one of his directorial influences when making this. And I think it shows.
Somewhere in the franchise, I can't recall which series or episode, there is mention of "The Laughing Vulcan and His Dog", a children's song. When I saw Sybok laugh maniacally in the desert during that opening sequence, it changed my perception of that song title.
Jen! Perceptive, as usual. Regarding shots, ILM was not available for this movie, so the effects shots were not up to snuff. Glad you've done them all so far. Upcoming, the sixth movie was directed by the same director who did "...Wrath..." It's a really good movie. And please note, I'm really big on music; I have a degree in it, and I roomed with a film-score nut in college with several-hundred film scores. Note: The music in Star Trek VI is incredible.

At least they brought back ILM for ST-VI, but they were forbidden from building any new models for budgetary reasons, which is why we once again had to face off with yet *another* Bird of Prey. The VFX still looked good though.

I'm sure this has been answered already but James Doohan (Scotty) was Canadian. A veteran of WW2 and apparently a badass pilot before turning to acting after the war. During his time as a pilot he apparently slalomed his plane between a series of telephone poles to "see if I could do it."
You asked about Spock playing the instrument at the end. That was called a Vulcan Lute or Lyre and he played it several times in the series. If you Google it you will find pictures of him playing it
Final frontier is not my favorite but it has to be watched to get to ST6 Undiscovered Country! ST6 IS one of my favorites and I will tell you why when that reaction comes up! Something that always got me. This movie's main theme song is the same as the TV show, Star Trek: The Next Generation. I did not think this was as bad as people say. I think it was Shatner's haters and at the time The Next Generation was taking off. Interesting facts, I found out, that Sybok was supposed to be played by Sean Connery. That fell through so they named the "GOD" planet, Shar Con Ree. Also, the guy they got to play Sybok was and I think still is married to Lucie Arnaz, the daughter of Lucille Ball, the woman who ran Desilu Studios and produced the Original Series

To answer your question, Jen, James Doohan was of Irish descent (both his parents were from Belfast), but he was born and raised in Canada, born in Vancouver, and raised in Sarnia, ON (on the border with Michigan). Shatner also was born and grew up in Canada, in Westmount, Quebec (a wealthy, bilingual suburb of Montreal).
Shatner also lived for in Sarnia, Ontario, for a short period of time. Doohan actually was an engineer. He graduated from a Technical School called Sarnia Collegiate Instatute of Technology or S.C.I.T's for short.
I think your evaluation of the movie is pretty much spot on. I’m glad you were able to enjoy it for what it is: a movie with a so-so plot and inconsistent direction, but some nice and fun scenes for the main characters. Fortunately, the next one is better … for some reason the even-numbered Trek movies were invariably the best.
@@Paul_1971 To be clear, I was referring to the original crew movies, and I think that’s usually what is meant by the “even numbers” hypothesis. But you’re right … III is quite good, although I’d still put it a notch below II, IV and even VI.
Star Trek V was produced during a 1988 Writer's Strike. It has some good character-driven moments and the Goldsmith music score is a keeper. The visual effects by Bran Ferren barely get the job done. The Rock Man in Hell scene was deleted. It was spoofed in Galaxy Quest.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this one, Jen. It is unfairly maligned. I feel the same way that you feel; it's my least favorite of the original six but I still love it. Shatner's direction can be a little clunky at times, but he was working under a lot of strain, including having his budget cut halfway through the film.
Considering how Shatner wrote the rest of the cast outside of the big three I believe this movies criticisms are fair. Shatner's direction is the least of the issues in this film. It's the writing that really kept it down. Just as TMP was a weak tea remake of the Changeling, so this is a poorly remade Who Mourns for Adonis. But no one can deny the scene with Bones and his dad. That was A level directing and acting.

While it's not the best Star Trek movie, this is the movie I watched on VHS the most when I was a kid. I also have the soundtrack on audiocassette, as well as digitally. I love Jerry Goldsmith's score for this movie. This is the first time that his Star Trek theme was used in a movie since The Motion Picture, and since Star Trek: The Next Generation started airing in 1987. Also, the corridors, Sickbay, and Engineering sets are from Star Trek: The Next Generation. For whatever reason, Shatner got a smaller budget for this movie, so they didn't even bother trying to hide the fact that those sets were from Next Gen. Normally they would redress the sets when they used them for multiple productions. The reuse of sets is a tradition for Star Trek going all the way back to the original series in the '60s.
@@TheYakusoku I listened to it so much when I got it in 1997, which is when I got my first stereo, that I wore the cassette tape out. Which is actually why I bought it digitally because while I do have access to a tape player, the tape is warped in certain spots. As for the movie itself, I only have it on DVD now. I'm looking for the 25th Anniversary VHS box set of the first four movies to add to my VHS collection.
Like myself and yourself, James Doohan is (or rather, was, rest his soul) Canadian - born in Vancouver - and was apparently quite good at doing multiple accents. Fun fact, he was missing the middle finger on his right hand, which he lost during a battle later on in the day after the Canadian landing at Juno Beach during D-Day. With Simon Pegg being English, it wasn't until 2023 that Scotty would finally be portrayed by a real Scotsman.
If I recall correctly, this was rushed into production immediately following a writer's strike, and the script really needed more work. Funny how so many flawed movies got messed up by that sort of thing. Look forward to more of that in 2024.
I was trying to figure out why Spock called them "Marsh Melons" and here is the reason: J.M. Dillard's novelization of the movie, McCoy knows that Spock is going to do extensive pre-camping research, so he pranks him by getting a computer tech to change “marshmallows” to “marsh melons” everywhere they're referenced. I think this is beyond hilarious! Also congrats on your new rank, Ensign Murray.

This one would have been a fine two-part episode, it just doesn't have the gravitas of the other films (except maybe the first). I don't need my Trek films to always have Gravitas, which is one reason I'm fine with this. As you say it would be a great couple of episodes too. The plot is a bit rambling, but it's a fine farce.

James Doohan (Scotty) was Canadian of Scots/Irish descent - and was a Lt. in the Canadian Army, wounded on the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. He once said, "Scotty is 99% James Doohan and one percent accent." When auditioning for the part, he told producer Gene Roddenberry, "If you want an engineer, in my experience the best engineers are Scotsmen." He even selected the name Montgomery Scott after his grandfather.

I have got a little bit of Star Trek trivia for you. The musical theme to the show was written by the composer Alexander Courage. His contract stated that he would receive royalties every time the show aired and that music was played. Unknown to him, Gene Roddenberry wrote some cheesy lyrics to the song and chose not to use them. Therefore entitling him to half of the royalties as a co-writer. He was not expecting the show to be as successful as it became and was trying to get some money from it.
My favourite quote is coming up in the next AND FANTASTIC movie, The Undiscovered Country. (I wont spoil it Captain Jen) I loved William Shatner as a Director, but didn't like the "God" storyline of this movie. Star Trek is a journey. I am glad to be taking it with this channel.
Shatner wrote a series of books called Tek War that was made into a tv series. He also wrote Star Trek books and comics. Along with his records he would literally do anything for a buck. On the lighter side, he did a series of appearances on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (all on TH-cam) which are hysterical.
Great reaction! This is not a stinker in my book, but it IS the weakest of the bunch. It does have many redeeming moments, and you acknowledged them. The bonds of the central trio are well exercised here. VI is really going to grab you. BTW, you have such a lovely voice. Whenever you break into the theme it puts your unique stamp on the production.
No, but it is far better than people give credit and it also winds up the Kirk getting old storyline from the previous four movies in that Kirk has accepted his age and has moved on. Arguably the scenes between Kirk, McCoy and Spock are the most endearing in the series. Fun fact the Enterprise set from TNG tv series was used for the film which is why it looks so familiar this being the first film made when TNG was in production. Row row row your boat...
I have said it before: STAR TREK V is Shatner's love-letter to what he remembers Star Trek the series being. Focus on the Big Three, God-like being, fist-fights down on the planet, alien-hued skies, Klingons, goofy comedy, etc. This is what happened AFTER the "Five-Year Mission". The big budget "finale" to TOS.

I really don't get why people don't like this movie. I mean, it's not the **best** Star Trek movie, but it's certainly not the worst, either. It has some really great character moments, especially between the main trio, and it's got some really funny moments, too. The premise isn't that great, but who cares? A plot only exists to give characters something to do, and the characters do a great job in this movie.

Most of this crew is now dead, ST6 is the last with the whole crew but I generations you get to see Kirk, Scotty and Chekov one last time. James Doohan (Scott) is dead now too but Shatner (Kirk), Koneig (Chekov) and Takei (Sulu) is still around. The Abrams prequel reboot used Nimoy as old spock and the 3rd movie has dedications to both him and the actor who played young Chekov who was murdered by his car. He was changing the oil and the car started, put itself in gear and pinned him to the garage door. RIP to those lost.
They're like family, so any time spent with them feels good. I saw this with my older brother at the drive in when it came out. I bought the soundtrack the next day.

The actor who played "god" is George Murdock. He played a lot of diffrent roles in Hollywood including 4 roles in Night Court and would be back in the Generation as an Admiral in one of the greatest episodes of Star Trek.
I’m extremely excited to see Jen’s now a fully-fledged member of Starfleet. Pretty certain it won’t be long before she’s captain of her own starship, boldly going where no Jen has gone before, and back home in time for champers!
James Doohan is Irish Canadian and a Canadian Army veteran of D-Day where he lost fingers from friendly fire. He flew artillery observer aircraft. He and Shatner both started acting at the Stratford Festival and CBC
This one usually gets pooped on by fans, but honestly I don't mind it. It has some genuinely great interaction between Kirk, Bones and Spock. The plot is a bit silly, yes, but I find that it grows on you with repeated viewings.
Greetings Jen! 🖖 I like this movie as much as the previous three, except for this scene as it shows us that Smoking still exists! 😮 However, someone had to be seen doing it I suppose, so that the first or second Transporter Beam Safety Rule makes sense! One rule is about keeping all body parts within the beam, like the rule with roller coasters. The other is, "NO SMOKING" and I couldn't read the rest of them even with Gene Roddenberry gesturing at the sign as he explained the one about not Smoking! 😮😂😊
Probably the weakest entry but there's still some good stuff in there. The camping scene at the beginning has a good moment and the story of Bones and his father is heartbreaking. The movie had some production issues. They couldn't get ILM back for the special effects so they suffered through with an inferior company, Also the finale was meant to have rock monsters but they didn't work on screen and were scrapped. Shatner feared he had actually killed the franchise
Mark 5:23 This movie gives us our first Asian actor or actress to play a "Romulan"! Also, it gives us our first portly "Klingon" that inspires overweight men across the nation to show up as one at conventions! Otherwise they only had, "Harcourt Fenton Mudd", "Cyrano Jones", and the race of aliens inspired by pigs, to costume play as! Except for those that insisted that despite their shapes, they could be in "Starfleet" and pointed at James Doohan as their example! 😁 He never saw himself as being all that big! The dancing cat girl? In the animated "Star Trek" series we get introduced to the feline "Catians". Quote: The Caitians were a spacefaring feline humanoid species and long-standing members of the United Federation of Planets ... (Star Trek: The Animated Series; Star ... End quote! That waterery game? Shatner and I both enjoy puns! 😉 So it is "Pool" played with an actual pool of water! 😂

My favorite part about this movie is that it means Jen is ready to watch #6: The Undiscovered Country. For my money, that's the best of the "original crew" films. (Even though The Voyage Home is a very close contender for being my favorite!)

The older I get, the more I appreciate the movie's theme which sort of is a restatement of the principle that "bad times make strong men, strong men make good times, good times make weak men, weak men make nad times, bad times make strong men." Adversity and pain can turn you into an asshole, but without them, most people will become complacent and never push themselves grow.
I also had not seen this movie before. It was quite fun watching for the first time with you. Your enthusiasm for the Star Trek series is fun to watch. Very jealous of the com button you received. I think this one stands with rest of the series.

Well, if you have to have a best and worst of the series, then this would be the worst. With so many they can't all be zingers. Still not that bad, and it means the rest are better.

If "The Final Frontier" had been a standalone film, it would honestly be remembered is an okay 80's sci fi movie. It's really only terrible in the context of Star Trek. It's a ton of Shatner's baggage, and comes nestled in between objectively better takes on the franchise.
If almost the exact same movie had been "Roger Corman Presents: Steller Wanderers: A Last Frontier," people would call it a lost gem and say it was a shame that there was never a Stellar Wanderers II.

I hadn't even realized Laurence Luckinbill was married to Lucie Arnaz... but I was pretty young when they got married. I remember Luckinbill from some TV appearances (an episode of "Columbo" comes to mind), and Desi Arnaz, Jr from "Automan" and a couple episodes of random TV shows here and there... but Lucie completely flew under my radar.

I thought Luckinbill did a great job. He really captures that Sybok is both kind of insane and an absolute true believer.
Sean Connery would have definitely been interesting, but I dunno if I could handle a Vulcan with a Scottish accent. V gets enough hate as it is, I can only imagine the pile on from that!
This movie contributed to the legacy of the original crew, just not as much as other movies. The music is wonderful and the scene where Kirk refuses Sybok’s gift is a great one.

I love this film, despite all its shortcomings. Jerry Goldsmith's score is stellar, the performances are great, and there is an interesting idea at the base of it. And! without it, we would never have heard of marsh melons. 🙂
Any time I get to hear the Star Trek:TMP/Star Trek V/The Next Generation theme is always a great time.
The whole score is just magic. Sybok's Vulcan themes, the piece playing while Kirk was climbing. It's very soothing.
Goldsmith elevates everything IMO.
Man I love this movie. I didn't find out people hayed it until we got a dial-up modem. I actually love the story, dialogue, and the character interactions, I think it is better than some of the other movies in this regard.

I always loved Captain Klaa. Unlike Kruge, who wanted to use Genesis to destroy a civilization, he wasn't evil. All he wanted was a worthy opponent. And he ended up admiring Kirk. Plus he looked like a badass.

Captain Klaa also cameos in Nicholas Meyer's _Star Trek: VI: The Undiscovered Country_ (played by the same actor) as one of the interpreters at Kirk and McCoy's trial on the Klingon homeworld, for a really nice bit of connective-tissue between this film and the next one.
I did like Kirk's "I need my pain!" speech, truer words were never spoken. The three last TNG movies were also scored by Jerry Goldsmith (First Contact being the best, both the movie itself and its music).

Kirk always had the great speeches. His speech in Return To Tomorrow was his best about the dangers about being on a Starship. "I'm in command, I could order this, but I'm not because Dr. McCoy is right about pointing out the enormous danger potential in any contact of life of intelligence".....to "Risk....risk is our business. That's what this Starship is all about, that's why we are aboard her". Something Jen missed. It was season 2 episode 20 just in case Jen reads this.
This movie is basically one big "The Original Series"-Tribute: Strong Focus on the Trio of Kirk/Spock/McCoy and their relationship, the Enterprise getting hijacked, the Crew fighting against a being that pretends to be Godlike but really isnt...
And *that* McCoy-Scene hits hard. Indeed, the entire Observation Longue-Scene does.

It's really the most TOS of all the Trek movies, I'll agree with that, and why I don't hate on it as much as other Trekkies do. It's just an enjoyable little romp through the galaxy aboard the starship Enterprise, without having any impact on anything to come after-just like TOS episodes were.
Yes. And the actor that played the young version of Spock's father Sarek was totally believable in that one scene. It was uncanny. That's what Discovery should have done. Found an actor that looked like a younger version of Mark Lenard.

Scotty's accent is about as accurate as Chekov's. The guy giving Kirk the orders was Harve Bennet the writer/producer. The Vulcan Lyre at the end was used by Spock on the TV show - that's what you get for skimming the series!
Also one of the few times Spock shows a bit of emotion while he plays. But I'm sure Spock would call it creativity.
One of the best stories I heard about this film comes from a convention where Walter Koenig was a GOH, and during a panel discussion, someone said that 'Shatner should never be allowed to direct again' to which Walter replied 'No...William Shatner was a fine director... He should never be allowed to *Write* again...'
Sadly, his future writings have just confirmed that fact 😆

In all fairness his original treatment was heavily re-written by Harve Bennett and David Loughery. Funny they're never mentioned at all when people criticise the film. And Walter on the subject of writing my friend.....Shatner's original vision for the film was a lot darker and even deeper and i think after the success of the "lighter" Star Trek 4 Paramount didn't have the balls to tackle it.

Jen! You're going to like this one...James Doohan is Canadian. I once saw him at a Star Trek convention. He recounted how they were debating the ethnicity of Scotty at the time. He said a line of dialogue, using a bunch of dialects. It was pretty hilarious! :)

Some Scotts say his accent is bad, some good & some thought he was a Scott raised by Scottish parents but outside of Scotland.
Not only a finger shot off but I believe 3 other bullets in that incident. A metal cigarette case his brother gave him stopped a bullet that might have been fatal.
Final Frontier was saved by the Row Row Row Your Boat at the end I think and the big three pairing of this movie and the best quote from Dr. McCoy "I liked him better before he died". The best part was that long awaited special origin story about Dr. McCoy and why he was always like he was. That was the big surprise for me.

IMO, ST V is a great story. The execution was the problem, and that lay with the way the studios kept reducing the funds in the middle of filming it. Things they planned to do they couldn't, but the set ups were there. Despite that, I still like it for what it brings to the trio.
I recall Shatner saying in a commentary that he had a whole sequence with s rock monster planned but the budget for it was axed.
I'm dissapointed with the resolution. Something so epic as a search for god, solved by a bird of prey is anti-climactic. It should have been more wiley.
This is why I hate this movie, the wasted potential. The basic plot, a malevolent god-like entity using a prophet to escape a prison, is a good premise and very much in line with Star Trek's history of god-like beings. Kirk's speech about needing his pain is fantastic. But it's just so poorly executed.
This exactly. Shatner had wanted to make it more action-packed and epic in scope, but the studio slashed the budget to a ridiculous level. So the script had to be re-written, and the production had to go with a cut-rate VFX shop. I can't imagine what drove Paramount to sabotage their own tentpole property, but I can only assume it was down to a lack of confidence in Shatner as a director.
They reused some sets from TNG to save $$.

Hey, this is original Trek. Here we don't skip ranks, but start with ensign.
Which Uniform do you think she would look best in? The 2260s, (TOS traditional) or the late 2270s-2340s (Wrath of Khan-Just before TNG)? Then TNG uniforms kept changing. And for the best season, one, and two are made of spandex and we’re very ugly. Season 3 and beyond use the more muted color, which is a lot more pleasing, and the material wasn’t as formfitting. Can you have the DS9’s/Voyager jumpsuits. And most peoples favorite, the TNG movie /DS9 jacket and trousers. Say what you will, but I’m always partial to the STO Odessey Uniforms. Sure they could use more color But nothing brings all the classic eras of trek in one uniform style. He even brought back the skirts and boots (optional) in the female duty uniform. What they didn’t really designed the skirt with a matching pattern to the jacket. Your only option is the cadet pattern which does not match.

The best parts of this movie are any scenes with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelly. Those scenes were pure gold. DeForest Kelley also had an incredible scene later on in the movie. Fun fact: The last scene with Kirk, Spock and Bones singing "Row Your Boat" and then the credits rolled was the last scene with the three main characters together. However Shatner, Nimoy and Kelly would remain good friends up until Kelly's death in 1999.

Sorry. It's been a long time since I saw the 6th film. I read an article about three years ago stating that about Kirk, Spock and Bones and went off of that. I will have to see the 6th film again.
It might have been the last time that *only* those three characters were on screen together.
It gets to me that I still remember seeing this in theaters as a kid. At the time I didn’t like it but it grew on me once I got more into Star Trek fandom.
I think what makes this work for me is the trio of Kirk, Spock and McCoy. They’ve always had that relationship but this was one of the new times each character had time to shine and play off each other.
I believe this was released around the time when The Next Generation started. The sixth film is one of my favorites.
Before TNG you have to see a few TV episodes. There are totally must sees just like the OST films.
I love the whole idea of Star Trek. I read somewhere they cut funding off for Shatner and he couldn't afford the effects he wanted for the film which explains why it looked so weird in certain parts.

The whole movie was made "on the cheap". II, III and IV all had effects created by Industrial Light and Magic, while this one was handled by some random other team and it shows. They were also supposed to get a huge "angels and demons wrath of God" battle at the end and all of that was cut and replaced by the blue cloud that fired laser eye-beams.
There were serious problems with the plot, but having it all look so comparatively cheap next to the others certainly did not help.
Jen, I haven't seen this one in years, but I enjoyed watching along with you. I never liked the deity plot, but I did enjoy Kirk's challenge, "What does God need with a starship?"
This one feels like an extended, enhanced episode rather than an actual film.
I had that feeling more with TMP and Insurrection. V is not among the best Trek movies, but at least I didn't feel bored.
I feel that about all the movies that followed STTMP to be honest. The first one was the only one that truly felt cinematic and epic to me.
That’s George Murdock as “God”. He’s a character actor or a crap ton of westerns TV shows in the in the 50s to the 80s. He’s got at least one more roll in Star Trek TNG is season three finale the best of both worlds. Who plays Admiral “Oh I hate them Borg” Hanson.
5 is not my favorite, but it is still characters I enjoy so it's comforting to me, just like I can always put TNG on any random episode and just be calm.

The only good thing about this movie, is it gets you closer to 6: The Undiscovered Country, which I think is up there with Wrath of Khan as one of the best Star Trek films out there.

Undiscovered Country is next! Then we hopefully get some TNG soon. I'm really nervous about Jenn missing key TNG episodes. TNG is much harder when you just watch top 10ish episodes a season. That can be different than top 10 key episodes.
Meh, I feel like you can watch the best 20 of the entire season, and get a good sense of it. Hell, almost nothing of season 1 is worth watching, and season 2 is only slightly better.

The probe the Klingons destroyed was suppose to be one of the Voyage probes.Also according to the novel of the movie,McCoy changed the information in the computer from marshmallow to marsh melon because he knew Spock would look up camping on Earth and the McCoy wanted to play a joke on him.🖖🖖🖖

I agree that out of the TOS movie series, this one is the weakest, but it still has its moments and can be an enjoyable watch. Plus, after learning more about the backstage difficulties while producing this film, like ILM being unavailable, I appreciate the effort a bit more.
In one of the promotional interviews prior to this film's release in theaters, Bill Shatner, with a straight face, listed The Three Stooges as one of his directorial influences when making this. And I think it shows.
Somewhere in the franchise, I can't recall which series or episode, there is mention of "The Laughing Vulcan and His Dog", a children's song. When I saw Sybok laugh maniacally in the desert during that opening sequence, it changed my perception of that song title.

Jen! Perceptive, as usual. Regarding shots, ILM was not available for this movie, so the effects shots were not up to snuff. Glad you've done them all so far. Upcoming, the sixth movie was directed by the same director who did "...Wrath..." It's a really good movie. And please note, I'm really big on music; I have a degree in it, and I roomed with a film-score nut in college with several-hundred film scores.
Note: The music in Star Trek VI is incredible.

At least they brought back ILM for ST-VI, but they were forbidden from building any new models for budgetary reasons, which is why we once again had to face off with yet *another* Bird of Prey. The VFX still looked good though.

I'm sure this has been answered already but James Doohan (Scotty) was Canadian. A veteran of WW2 and apparently a badass pilot before turning to acting after the war. During his time as a pilot he apparently slalomed his plane between a series of telephone poles to "see if I could do it."
You asked about Spock playing the instrument at the end. That was called a Vulcan Lute or Lyre and he played it several times in the series. If you Google it you will find pictures of him playing it
The episode 'Charlie X' is one example where Spock plays it, and is a decent episode to watch if it's one that you haven't yet Jen.

Something that always got me. This movie's main theme song is the same as the TV show, Star Trek: The Next Generation. I did not think this was as bad as people say. I think it was Shatner's haters and at the time The Next Generation was taking off. Interesting facts, I found out, that Sybok was supposed to be played by Sean Connery. That fell through so they named the "GOD" planet, Shar Con Ree. Also, the guy they got to play Sybok was and I think still is married to Lucie Arnaz, the daughter of Lucille Ball, the woman who ran Desilu Studios and produced the Original Series

To answer your question, Jen, James Doohan was of Irish descent (both his parents were from Belfast), but he was born and raised in Canada, born in Vancouver, and raised in Sarnia, ON (on the border with Michigan). Shatner also was born and grew up in Canada, in Westmount, Quebec (a wealthy, bilingual suburb of Montreal).
Shatner also lived for in Sarnia, Ontario, for a short period of time. Doohan actually was an engineer. He graduated from a Technical School called Sarnia Collegiate Instatute of Technology or S.C.I.T's for short.
I think your evaluation of the movie is pretty much spot on. I’m glad you were able to enjoy it for what it is: a movie with a so-so plot and inconsistent direction, but some nice and fun scenes for the main characters. Fortunately, the next one is better … for some reason the even-numbered Trek movies were invariably the best.

@@Paul_1971 To be clear, I was referring to the original crew movies, and I think that’s usually what is meant by the “even numbers” hypothesis. But you’re right … III is quite good, although I’d still put it a notch below II, IV and even VI.
Star Trek V was produced during a 1988 Writer's Strike. It has some good character-driven moments and the Goldsmith music score is a keeper. The visual effects by Bran Ferren barely get the job done. The Rock Man in Hell scene was deleted. It was spoofed in Galaxy Quest.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this one, Jen. It is unfairly maligned. I feel the same way that you feel; it's my least favorite of the original six but I still love it. Shatner's direction can be a little clunky at times, but he was working under a lot of strain, including having his budget cut halfway through the film.
Considering how Shatner wrote the rest of the cast outside of the big three I believe this movies criticisms are fair. Shatner's direction is the least of the issues in this film. It's the writing that really kept it down. Just as TMP was a weak tea remake of the Changeling, so this is a poorly remade Who Mourns for Adonis. But no one can deny the scene with Bones and his dad. That was A level directing and acting.
James Doohan (Scotty) was a Canadian, born in Vancouver. His parents, I believe were from Ireland. he grew up in Sarnia and serviced in the Canadian army in WW2 and moved to London, Ontario when he returned from the war.
While it's not the best Star Trek movie, this is the movie I watched on VHS the most when I was a kid. I also have the soundtrack on audiocassette, as well as digitally. I love Jerry Goldsmith's score for this movie. This is the first time that his Star Trek theme was used in a movie since The Motion Picture, and since Star Trek: The Next Generation started airing in 1987. Also, the corridors, Sickbay, and Engineering sets are from Star Trek: The Next Generation. For whatever reason, Shatner got a smaller budget for this movie, so they didn't even bother trying to hide the fact that those sets were from Next Gen. Normally they would redress the sets when they used them for multiple productions. The reuse of sets is a tradition for Star Trek going all the way back to the original series in the '60s.
I also have the movie on VHS and the soundtrack on cassette tape somewhere, but I don't think I have access to a VCR or tape player now.
@@TheYakusoku I listened to it so much when I got it in 1997, which is when I got my first stereo, that I wore the cassette tape out. Which is actually why I bought it digitally because while I do have access to a tape player, the tape is warped in certain spots. As for the movie itself, I only have it on DVD now. I'm looking for the 25th Anniversary VHS box set of the first four movies to add to my VHS collection.
Like myself and yourself, James Doohan is (or rather, was, rest his soul) Canadian - born in Vancouver - and was apparently quite good at doing multiple accents. Fun fact, he was missing the middle finger on his right hand, which he lost during a battle later on in the day after the Canadian landing at Juno Beach during D-Day. With Simon Pegg being English, it wasn't until 2023 that Scotty would finally be portrayed by a real Scotsman.

If I recall correctly, this was rushed into production immediately following a writer's strike, and the script really needed more work. Funny how so many flawed movies got messed up by that sort of thing. Look forward to more of that in 2024.
I was trying to figure out why Spock called them "Marsh Melons" and here is the reason: J.M. Dillard's novelization of the movie, McCoy knows that Spock is going to do extensive pre-camping research, so he pranks him by getting a computer tech to change “marshmallows” to “marsh melons” everywhere they're referenced.

Jen is a true Trek fan. While not her favorite, she still likes it. I am looking forward to her reaction to STVI. (My favorite).
For all it's faults I still love it. The big three together are terrific and it has a lot of heart and fun to it. Plus Goldsmith's score is beautiful.
There are 6 original cast films and one has to take last place as favorite. Still a lot of fun and it was always going to be hard to follow #4 anyway. The sixth film is definitely in the top 5 though. lol.
James Doohan (Scotty) was Canadian of Scots/Irish descent - and was a Lt. in the Canadian Army, wounded on the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. He once said, "Scotty is 99% James Doohan and one percent accent." When auditioning for the part, he told producer Gene Roddenberry, "If you want an engineer, in my experience the best engineers are Scotsmen." He even selected the name Montgomery Scott after his grandfather.

Nichelle Nichols was not only a magnificent dancer but a very talented singer, too. You keep on trucking with the Trek series, and then move on to the next generation series. I have got a little bit of Star Trek trivia for you.
The musical theme to the show was written by the composer Alexander Courage. His contract stated that he would receive royalties every time the show aired and that music was played. Unknown to him, Gene Roddenberry wrote some cheesy lyrics to the song and chose not to use them. Therefore entitling him to half of the royalties as a co-writer. He was not expecting the show to be as successful as it became and was trying to get some money from it.
My favourite quote is coming up in the next AND FANTASTIC movie, The Undiscovered Country. (I wont spoil it Captain Jen) I loved William Shatner as a Director, but didn't like the "God" storyline of this movie. Star Trek is a journey. I am glad to be taking it with this channel.
Shatner wrote a series of books called Tek War that was made into a tv series. He also wrote Star Trek books and comics. Along with his records he would literally do anything for a buck. On the lighter side, he did a series of appearances on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (all on TH-cam) which are hysterical.
Great reaction! This is not a stinker in my book, but it IS the weakest of the bunch. It does have many redeeming moments, and you acknowledged them. The bonds of the central trio are well exercised here. VI is really going to grab you.
BTW, you have such a lovely voice. Whenever you break into the theme it puts your unique stamp on the production.
No, but it is far better than people give credit and it also winds up the Kirk getting old storyline from the previous four movies in that Kirk has accepted his age and has moved on. Arguably the scenes between Kirk, McCoy and Spock are the most endearing in the series.
Fun fact the Enterprise set from TNG tv series was used for the film which is why it looks so familiar this being the first film made when TNG was in production.

I have said it before: STAR TREK V is Shatner's love-letter to what he remembers Star Trek the series being. Focus on the Big Three, God-like being, fist-fights down on the planet, alien-hued skies, Klingons, goofy comedy, etc. This is what happened AFTER the "Five-Year Mission". The big budget "finale" to TOS.
Another great reaction! I actually like this film, but i admit it's not one of my favourites. I always love it when characters like Chekov get something useful to do. I look forward to seeing you react to Star Trek 6, which is my favourite.

I really don't get why people don't like this movie. I mean, it's not the **best** Star Trek movie, but it's certainly not the worst, either. It has some really great character moments, especially between the main trio, and it's got some really funny moments, too. The premise isn't that great, but who cares? A plot only exists to give characters something to do, and the characters do a great job in this movie.
18:30 Mark! People that are into urinals, toilets, and bidets, finally got to see what a "Star Trek Tech" one looks like and the cameo appearance went unnoticed by many! 😁 I one for one was never one to ask "How do they go to the bathroom?"
"What does God need with a starship?" and "Jim, you don't ask the Almighty for his ID!" are two awesome quotes from an otherwise muddled mess.
Most of this crew is now dead, ST6 is the last with the whole crew but I generations you get to see Kirk, Scotty and Chekov one last time. James Doohan (Scott) is dead now too but Shatner (Kirk), Koneig (Chekov) and Takei (Sulu) is still around. The Abrams prequel reboot used Nimoy as old spock and the 3rd movie has dedications to both him and the actor who played young Chekov who was murdered by his car. He was changing the oil and the car started, put itself in gear and pinned him to the garage door. RIP to those lost.
I love this one so much. The character stuff is great and the release the pain scenes iconic.
That scene I wished was explored more mainly us also seeing Kirks greatest pain
They're like family, so any time spent with them feels good. I saw this with my older brother at the drive in when it came out. I bought the soundtrack the next day.

The actor who played "god" is George Murdock. He played a lot of diffrent roles in Hollywood including 4 roles in Night Court and would be back in the Generation as an Admiral in one of the greatest episodes of Star Trek.

I’m extremely excited to see Jen’s now a fully-fledged member of Starfleet. Pretty certain it won’t be long before she’s captain of her own starship, boldly going where no Jen has gone before, and back home in time for champers!

James Doohan is Irish Canadian and a Canadian Army veteran of D-Day where he lost fingers from friendly fire. He flew artillery observer aircraft. He and Shatner both started acting at the Stratford Festival and CBC
This one usually gets pooped on by fans, but honestly I don't mind it. It has some genuinely great interaction between Kirk, Bones and Spock. The plot is a bit silly, yes, but I find that it grows on you with repeated viewings.
Greetings Jen! 🖖 I like this movie as much as the previous three, except for this scene as it shows us that Smoking still exists! 😮 However, someone had to be seen doing it I suppose, so that the first or second Transporter Beam Safety Rule makes sense! One rule is about keeping all body parts within the beam, like the rule with roller coasters. The other is, "NO SMOKING" and I couldn't read the rest of them even with Gene Roddenberry gesturing at the sign as he explained the one about not Smoking! 😮😂😊
Probably the weakest entry but there's still some good stuff in there. The camping scene at the beginning has a good moment and the story of Bones and his father is heartbreaking.
The movie had some production issues. They couldn't get ILM back for the special effects so they suffered through with an inferior company, Also the finale was meant to have rock monsters but they didn't work on screen and were scrapped. Shatner feared he had actually killed the franchise
Yep. Having ILM would have immensely improved the production design of the film.
Such an underrated gem of a movie.

Mark 5:23 This movie gives us our first Asian actor or actress to play a "Romulan"! Also, it gives us our first portly "Klingon" that inspires overweight men across the nation to show up as one at conventions! Otherwise they only had, "Harcourt Fenton Mudd", "Cyrano Jones", and the race of aliens inspired by pigs, to costume play as! Except for those that insisted that despite their shapes, they could be in "Starfleet" and pointed at James Doohan as their example! 😁

My favorite part about this movie is that it means Jen is ready to watch #6: The Undiscovered Country. For my money, that's the best of the "original crew" films. (Even though The Voyage Home is a very close contender for being my favorite!)

4:46 The legend David Warner. Brilliant in TNG as the Cardassian general and that villian in Titanic who locks up Jack.....But a wonderful Shakespearean actor and truly missed....
The older I get, the more I appreciate the movie's theme which sort of is a restatement of the principle that "bad times make strong men, strong men make good times, good times make weak men, weak men make nad times, bad times make strong men." Adversity and pain can turn you into an asshole, but without them, most people will become complacent and never push themselves grow.
I also had not seen this movie before. It was quite fun watching for the first time with you. Your enthusiasm for the Star Trek series is fun to watch. Very jealous of the com button you received. I think this one stands with rest of the series.
