I just loved it when you finished your play-a-long demo at the end and the music fades out as you say, "OK, I hate to have to stop it but ta, the producer has indicated to me that it is time to move on..." just as the dog outside comes to the door like HE is the producer!!! I've had about 4 days in the past 2 years where I've finally been home alone and your videos are on all day each of those 4 days when I can finally practice in peace. These are awesome. I play in the bay area as well and my girlfriend is a jazz horn/flute player. Maybe we'll see each other one day soon :)
Hey Edgardo, I look in on your videos now and then, and offer respect and congratulations to your fine playing, and your true and simple teaching. I have a dear friend who is looking to study, and can travel. Since I rarely teach, I'll recommend you. Where are you based? Steve Bloom (from Afrocubanismo)
Loved the disclaimer at 6:43 ! 😄It needs to be said: let's use our energy to make people feel good, rather than fighting about theories. If something new works, it works, and we feel it because... we have heard traditions. Thx for your generosity. Got me clear on a few things. 👍🙏 Best wishes.
About 1970 I went to the Palladium Ballroom on Broadway in New York City (where I lived) to experience Tito Puente's band. My real motive was to learn how the bongocero played in a big band. I believe his bongo player was Dandy. What stuck with me the most was how he would mix in that hard left hand "crack". I don't recall Dandy picking up the cowbell. As a young white boy I was scared to death mixing in with the gentes negras. As soon as the band stopped I was outta there!
@@dancepapi Holà Papi, con todo el respecto... hace 11 mezes que yo "stay tuned" :) pero de nuevo esperando a unos maravillosos cursos como este, bien collocao,, con un bueno senso de la pedagogía y del groove... Muchas gracias y Por favor... DE MAS !!
You are a wealth of knowledge and skill and I learned a lot watching your video. I have issues with the counting and play by instinct. I know the tones, martillo, etc., but after seeing what you do in the video I realize where my focus will be at. I need to practice with a mentor, bottom line. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.
Thank you for the amazing tutorial, it’s very helpful and easy to follow! I’ve realised that when I’m practicing the variation I was always missing the fourth hit. What I found helpful was using a talking metronome instead of a normal one, to make sure I’m hitting mute notes when he’s saying one and three, and making sure I’m hitting the low bongo on four (you can just search talking metronome on TH-cam at it’ll come up). Also some more variations would be great!
I really appreciate the way he explains the techniqurs and emphasizes and animates certain those techniques. I would have so much fun if I could sit with him as a student, because it's as if he knows my personality and how I learn. :~)
Thank you so much for sharing this lesson, it made me one step closer to start playing bongo drums! Finally I got them! So thank you for inspiration! And this song is amazing, it so in my head since I heard it, would appreciate if you share the name of it, want to try play to it too! Keep it up! ;)
isn't the PA KU after the 2 of the clave? You were playing it after the 3. Your videos are really good. Really enjoy your teaching techniques. SALSA RHYTHM is a great App.
Edward, as I say in the video, different people put that variation on different sides of the Clave... and further more, even the same player when followed thru the whole song may put it in different sides with in the same tune. I generally opt for the "Pa Ku" (as you called, and I like it) at the end of the 3 side of the clave, ending on beat ONE of the 2 side of the clave. I hope this clarifies. Thanks for your comments and for watching my videos.
Maestro, hace falta un tutorial de cómo tocar el quinto en la rumba (guaguancó), con ideas y conceptos y cómo afrontarlo. Gracias por sus conocimientos!!!

Esteban, The music in the background is a loop form an application called "Salsa Rhythm". The logo looks like a small red color square with a couple of yellow maracas in the middle. It will take a couple of minutes for you to figure our the application and how to use it., but it is a nice practicing tool. Much more fun than a regular metronome. Take care and keep the fun in your practice OK?
I guess you talk Spanish. But I'll write in English. I note that you teach only ONE variation. It's very nice. And is named " REPIQUE" by some bongonceros. The back music is very nice to practice. Good video, good class. Ah! and beautiful dog
Gracias.
great lessons! Thanks Any recommendations on Bongos? I'd like to purchase a set but have no idea on what brand to get or how much to spend. I have an LP Rumba Conga and I like that a lot.
Kept67, you can buy the match to your Rumba Model Congas, if you do so, I recommend you change the skins and put Remo Fiber 3 bongo heads on both (or at least in the macho) or high drum. But if your bongoes happen to come with decent heads already, play them until they need changing and don't "mess" with them (-:).. Another good intermediate quality bongo would be the Matador Wooden Bongo. But there are MANY good quality and not very expensive bongoes out there. Good luck to you and thanks for watching the videos.
