  • I just spent a month learning the bongos from as many sources as I could find. I wanted to pass on all the basics that I learned to you!
0:29 1. Anatomy of the Bongos
    3:03 2. Tuning the Bongos
5:25 3. How to Hold the Bongos
6:20 4. What to Hit the Bongos With
7:14 5. How to Hit the Bongos With your Hands
    8:44 6. Basic Bongo Rhythm
11:03 7. Where to Go Next
From here, you have enough to get started and know where to focus your attention. The book I mentioned is "The Bongo Book" by Trevor Salloum--this book is an excellent compilation of rhythms and does a great job explaining technique.

Nice!! You may be the son i never had, I may be the mom who played the coffee containers (that you never had). Bongos and pandemics go together like ham and eggs; nothing quite as fun as playing and singing Guantanamara when you don't speak Spanish and have to change the lyrics to "Golden retriever! I got a golden retriever. Golden retrieeeeeeerever, I got a golden retrieeever".

Mary, you're amazing! I love the rhythm and life that's in your life. I hope the bongos continue to bring you joy and wish you the best. :)

@@SoundAdventurer Thank you! Also bought a snare and have giant amazon shipping box for bass, 2 smaller boxes for tom toms and a crap cymbal. File that under "tell me you're single without saying you're single". Lol, it's fun and ok for basic muscle memory. Switch to bongos when my hands get too tired, it works!

Being a beginner in bongos, I find it very useful that you have indicated chronologically the different parts of your video.
This bodes well for the rest of your teaching. Thank you.

Found your video while looking for information about recently donated bongos.
    Video mentions: exploring new instruments.
    Have you ever
    played a Tamborine, properly ?
It is actually 2 different instruments !
    ( Bongo & Shaker )
    ********
Many "players" use as little more than a mono-tone metronome !
(They should be banned ! )

    Recently obtained donated bongos.
Your video is a great help in trying to save the bongos.
    ******
Do not know if can save,
or have to replace one of
    the synthetic skins.
    The other skins, look usable,
    but need proper testing.
    ( as by your video)
    *******
Donated to the community support center:
2 x Single Chamber (Body) Bongo
    1 x Dual Chamber ( Lap/Knee) Bongo
    One chamber has no tones
    ( dead chamber).
    This surface (synthetic skin)
    may or may be salvagable.

These are from my home region in Cuba, el Oriente, can’t be a bongo player without knowing the bongo bell! Maybe you should do a video on both and their importance in the orchestration and flow of LP

Very informative. I have a high quality bongo but I am not able to get that popping sound on the macho. Does that mean I have to make the skin tighter?

    • @SoundAdventurer
      @SoundAdventurer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have found that sometimes the macho is more resonant at some pitches than others. I think in general, the higher the more pop, but you'll have to experiment. make sure your lugs are all the same tightness. (hit around the border and make sure the pitch is the same)

We were sitting on a beach in Mumbai I was 7 at the time a man was sitting close to us he had a drum I was staring at it and he said would you like a go , when I stopped playing there were about 500 people on the beach all clapping it was the First time I had played a drum.
