    My Drone Cinematography MasterClass is FINISHED!
    Hey buddy. As beginner drone pilots ….most of us had a whole bunch of fears. I created this playful episode to address the top 5 sources of those fears and hopefully this helps dissipate them as fast as possible. To summarize….we have an incredibly complicated hobby. It’s my belief based on my experience….that “simplifying” is the key to reducing stress & increasing joy. Only then….can progress toward improving begin..

    Another wonderful video Samurai!! If someone approaches me, I tell them to wait a second or two until I can bring the drone back so I can talk to them safely. I use that opportunity to educate the person . You are so right when you say that most of the people are just interested in the drone and how it works. We are all ambassadors of our craft and just like being a cop, people will remember that one interaction that they had with you. I always try and make it a positive one! Thanks for your content brother!!

    Being a member of a Mini 3 Pro Facebook group I've noticed that the majority of those who report on drone crashes are the ones that relied too much on the obstacle avoidance system. Your advice of fly like it's not there is the best and what I always follow.

    • @TedNemeth
      @TedNemeth  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      hey buddy. Yup I’m a member of that group too. Some great photographers from around the world on there. But yes I saw lots of posts by people saying the obstacle avoidance failed them. I also see LOTS of posts by people asking legal questions about drones in foreign countries! That’s why I included it here.
      Thanks for being part of the community Isom.

    Last weekend I officially flew over water along the Oregon Coast and the amount of anxiety was almost too much to handle. More than once your last item about false landing over water almost came to pass! Fortunately I realized this and immediately pushed forward on my joystick to gain altitude. Your recommendation for the "hard deck" never occurred to me and now will make that a required rule when flying over water. Great recommendation! Thank you!

    Great tips, Ted. Spot on with points on dealing with confrontation. If I have a Karen in my face I'll stop the flying session, land, pack-up and go someplace else. That's only happened to me twice in almost 7 years of flying drones, but admit that I do most of my drone flights out in remote areas where no one else is around. I also use the same process for orienting the drone as your points on take off / landing, getting close to objects -- too many close calls with not having my brain switch inputs into the controller when the drone is not facing away from me.

    fog too. when i try to descend in fog the sensors think it's a land mass being so dense and starts to land. i was stuck high up for ages waiting for a break to pull down through. i also leave shutter in auto, but like to lock iso for different stages of sunset/twilight. just uploaded a Miami sunset to night video from iso 200-800 and found 1600 wasnt needed and just revealed excess noise in the shadows that stayed hidden at 800. brill video buddy.

      wow! I never experience that. But absolutely makes sense. fog up those tiny sensors and the drone is blind as a bat.

    Another great video. You speak TRUTH! Wish I had seen this video when I was first starting out. The landing orientation tip has been really helpful to me with zero crash landings since I got my DJI Mini 3 Pro. One thing I would add... 3 months before my trip to Ireland I would take my drone out to the backyard every day and fly it around the neighborhood for 20 minutes. I would test the various setting, range and lighting conditions. But the most important thing I was doing was becoming familiar with the controls to the point where I didn't have to think about doing anything. It was like driving a car. You do it without having to pause to think. So I would say the best way to lose your drone flying fears is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Yeah I know, pretty obvious but it paid off when I got to Ireland and got some spectacular shots. Keep up the good work Ted.

    Hi Ted, late this past fall I took the plunge and went from a $400 toy drone to the DJI Air 3 (I'm retiring end of 2024). I have only 2 hours on it due to a 6 day work week in the resort industry (I live on-site at the resort for those 6 days), now we're closed and I'm off for the next 3 months and can really learn about this a/c. Your videos are right up there with my top five content producers, thank you, you're a fun person to learn from. Last week I passed my advanced licence (I'm in Canada) and wish to learn to do some wedding and/or group and real estate filming as a retirement job.
    PS. I'm a 1200 hour private pilot, drone flying, especially at a distance is considerably harder than a Cessna 206; but as I amass drone hours I trust I'll be more relaxed.

    Great video Tedd. In my experience, drone Karen's don't care what you have to say. They seem to be convinced before they start their encounter with you that they are in the right. Best way to deal with it was to remain friendly and let them know that if they are that concerned they can call the police to dispute it and then move on to my flying. Education is key but some aren't willing to learn their error.

      hey professor. I’m basing that on my experience with many false landings over water when I was around 1 meter over water.
      I’ve had zero false landings over water when I was around 10 meters. So that specific height is just a generalization based on my Mini 3 Pro experience. Especially for beginners….I think that’s a pretty safe minimum.

    Brilliant video Ted with some very good tips to staying relaxed. I use an app called Drone Assist to help with knowing where I can and cannot fly..it takes some of the uncertainty away 👍 The height reading is a very good one to remember too..many tine if I've taken off on a hillside, I'm flying at minus metres in height, which can be quite disconcerting at times..lol
    Thanks again for the tips, they really help to put things in perspective.. Take care, fellow cinematographer.. 🙏😊

    Great advice for everyone Ted. I like the Drone Buddy app. I've been approached several times when flying and always respond that I'm doing documentary footage for commercials, advertisements, etc. and it works. I'll now also inform them of knowing the laws. From your previous videos I know you always shoot in Auto mode. What I would like to know is which mode do you usually record in the majority of time: Normal, DCINELIKE, HLG, or DLOGM? Thanks for all you do, luv all the vids!!!

    • @TedNemeth
      @TedNemeth  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hey buddy. I shoot in Normal color profile. Its my opinion based on my testing that DCINELIKE is not a true log profile, meaning its not flat enough (desaturated) therefore I see VERY little actual benefit after I’m done color grading to restore the colors and exposure.
      It’s a lot of time for little to no benefit in improved dynamic range.
      So I use Normal color profile and save all that time.

    It's birds that give me the greatest anxiety since a Magpie took me out two months back. Crows keep going after me now! Every. Single. Flight!

    • @TedNemeth
      @TedNemeth  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ha! I hear ya. I just went to ChatGPT and asked: “how can i get magpies to be scared of my drone?”. Here’s the reply:
      It's important to approach this situation with care and consideration for both the magpies and the ethical use of drones. Here are some suggestions to potentially discourage magpies from being near your drone:
      1. **Associate Drone with Unpleasant Stimuli:**
      - Try flying the drone while emitting a loud, unpleasant noise (if your drone has this capability). This may create an aversive association for the magpies.
      2. **Use Visual Deterrents:**
      - Attach visual deterrents to your drone. Magpies are often scared of reflective or shiny objects. Consider adding items like reflective tape or lightweight, dangling streamers to your drone.
      3. **Modify the Appearance of the Drone:**
      - Experiment with changing the appearance of your drone. Some birds are intimidated by large, unusual-looking objects. You could attach large, colorful decorations or modify the drone's appearance in a way that makes it less appealing to magpies.
      4. **Employ Natural Predatory Sounds:**
      - Play recordings of natural magpie predators (such as raptors) from a safe distance. This may trigger a fear response and encourage magpies to stay away.
      5. **Maintain a Safe Distance:**
      - Ensure you are not flying the drone too close to magpies or their nests. Maintain a safe and respectful distance to avoid causing unnecessary stress to the birds.
      6. **Consistent Behavior:**
      - Be consistent in your efforts to associate the drone with aversive stimuli. This may help reinforce the idea that the drone is not a welcome presence.
      7. **Time of Day Considerations:**
      - Pay attention to the time of day you fly the drone. Magpies are often more active and protective during the breeding season, so take extra care during this time.
      Remember, it's crucial to prioritize the well-being of the magpies and other wildlife in your area. Use humane and ethical methods, and avoid causing undue stress or harm to the birds. If you have concerns about magpies or other wildlife, consider consulting with local wildlife experts or authorities for guidance.

    I had an older guy walk up to me and ask if I had a permit to fly my drone. I had a mini 3 pro and was flying it where. I was allowed and not even over people….over the water actually.
    I told him that I didn’t need one as the drone was under 250 grams. He then went on some crap about, “Well you could use that to peek in people’s windows…”
    Instead of punching him in the face and throwing him over the side of the wharf where we were standing, I just said, “I don’t have this conversation.” ….and just moved on as I already had my stuff packed up.

If you know the rules and where you are nothing can touch you. I fly right up to the boundaries of class f but don't cross over. Class f is the only airspace you cannot fly a sub 250 in Canada. I had one encounter with a rager, I just laughed at him until he ran out of air and expletives. As soon as he realized physical intimidation was a non-starter he limped away with his tail between his legs. I have lost 6 mini 3 pro's, fortunately my warranty coverage replaced every one of them so there is no anxiety there. I like to fly in forests and way out over water. 3 meters is my determination of safe height over water, any lower and it can be a problem...2 of the 6 went swimming for this reason.

    My greatest anxiety has never really been specifically like any of the ones on your list.
    The thing that's always created the most anxiety is having a run in with a Drone-Karen.
    Even worse would be a drone Karen who calls the cops and the cops that respond have little to no knowledge about the drone laws for the area they patrol SO,
    based on the complaining of the Karen and the fact that they're wearing police badges, they unilaterally determine that I'm the one in the wrong,
    in spite of the fact that I've taken all the proper steps to be out there flying legally in the first place.
    Full disclosure: I have never had this happen. It's just the one thing that causes me anxiety as a certified drone pilot.

    • @TedNemeth
      @TedNemeth  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hey Tim! I specifically talk about this in the video.
      If you know the laws and obey the laws…..then it’s actually a GOOD THING that Karen calls the police.
      And it’s even better if the police who arrive are ignorant of the laws.
      I say this because….as along as you’re not breaking any laws….now those police officers who were uninformed….are now informed.
      They learned. That is good.
      And that Karen….you told here you’re not breaking any laws and now she knows YOU WERE CORRECT and you’re simply a well-intentioned landscape videographer enjoying the beautiful outdoors.
      All this requires patience on the drone pilots part. But it’s worth it. Karen learned and the police officers now know their local drone laws.
