    Hello FLYING CAMERA CREW.
Today we look at a few beginner drone tips for editing footage: “The Big Ted Method!”. Most is from my DJI Mini 3 Pro and Mini 2 drones. Most beginners focus on getting cinematic drone footage, but in today’s episode we talk about why I think storytelling is a more fruitful goal with editing. It’s much harder but substantially more fun & creative than simply pursuing a rich “cinematic” color grade.
The editing program I use is LUMAFUSION. It has all the features I need and not a ton of features I don’t use. Editing on LUMAFUSION is incredibly fast & fun. I tried all the popular editing programs like Premiere Pro, Davinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro and others. Editing took way too long to complete with those programs because they’re too complicated, designed to accomplish complicated tasks that I’ll never do. Just my opinion based on all my testing.

Hi Ted. Awesome video. My #1 focus on a video is sound design. With the right audio, I find that my footage almost edits itself. I spend time listening to my music before I edit so I have an idea on what type of shots I "feel" in the beat. I love waking up to a new video from you. Thank you so much for making the start of my day a great one!

Ted, I am glad you did this installment dealing with editing. Editing can be really daunting for beginners ( such as myself ) so a bit of a primer is a big help. One of the things you are pretty consistent in with your videos is the notion of storytelling, and it was nice to see you give this little tutorial that lays in some useful foundations to build on. I have been using many of your tips, tricks and creative suggestions in my more recent projects and when I sat back and watched it, the end result was really impressive for someone just learning how capture the video, and then use an editor to frame and present the story. Without any of that input, I am pretty sure it would have ended up 'just another drone video'... The other thing I found, and it goes to your point of evoking emotion or triggering an emotional response, sound layering for effect, and also selecting a score that is consistent with your intended message / narrative is massively powerful in delivery. If you get a chance, check out my latest and let me know your thoughts. This is turning out to be a lot more fun and rewarding than I had hoped in the beginning, and I honestly believe that having someone to look to, who is passionate on the subject, but also willing to share knowledge in a thoughtful and demonstrable way has really helped people to be more deliberate in their planning and production efforts to a degree that it really becomes an artistic pursuit. Not only that, but I love how it creates excuses to get out and take notice of things we often take for granted.

Dang! How did I miss this initially. Sorry for the late reply and thank you for the kind supportive note. What editing program are you using? You say editing can be daunting for beginners. I TRULY believe that programs like Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve are way way way too sophisticated for non-professionals. A more sophisticated editing program will not improve the footage. Only better cinematography will actually improve the footage. I am a huge fan of LUMAFUSION.
I am going now to your channel and will give some thoughts on your videos. Super excited. And super grateful my playful little tutorials provide some value. Welcome aboard.

Great video as ever Ted. The Fiver contributions really highlight the vast gap in creativity and storytelling compared to the footage you create. I used to use animation and logo creators on Fiver but soon realised that putting the work in myself can produce far better results, while learning more at the same time. Please keep these videos coming as they inspire me to get out with the drone, in between the standard British rain storms of course. 😉

Thanks for sharing, loving your videos and the stories you're telling.
    Funny story:
Been recording some "drone footage" for my municipality's park team.
Originally, they wanted "just" raw drone footage of the urban parks with the editing to be done by their marketing team.
But then their parks commissioner pulled me to the side and asked me to do all the editing as well because he felt I'm telling stories that their marketing team (i.e. the "pros") aren't getting across.
So yeah, totally with you, it's sooooooo much more than just editing - it's the narrative, the story, the emotional responses we're generating.😊
Keep up the amazing stories you're telling - loving it 🤩

That is so special. Hi Ted. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic. It was an interesting experiment. When ever I complete a video I find it curious to search for content with the same subject matter to see how others film and edit their videos.
The technique of shooting wide/medium/close seems to be part of the foundation of great cinematography. I now try to employ an element of story telling in my videos. Music, as you have said plays a huge part along with cutting to the rhythm of the music and the all important sound design.
Taking a break from editing for a day or 2 is great advice. Far too often I gotten so engrossed into a project, editing for hours to finish & publish it. Only to find after a few days or so, I`ve made simple mistakes or missed opportunities.
Unnecessary cuts and garish transitions tends to detract from the overall finish of the video. It`s all to tempting when you have a myriad of transition at your disposal to get carried away with them all. I know i did, initially.
    Keep up the great content.

Ted, I thoroughly enjoyed your video... and as an amateur here, I find myself almost doing what you do... take footage that may make a good concept and keep rolling... take a few b rolls to enhance what may have been shot in the air... then in editing cut cut cut until I see a story develop. Sometimes it make take a few days but once I am "in the zone" there is no pulling me away from the computer. Silence can be a dramatic pause used at the right moment BUT music evokes mood or sets up a new scene thus 100% agree with you. I learned so much from YOU, yep, YOU. So I thank you for letting me enjoy this hobby more with these thought provoking tools of the trade. And I am not saying I am GREAT at this, but I suck much less at this process.

Anyway it looks great and I learned a lot. Would love to see a video where you go more in depth with your editing process. I love this episode. So much in it. Thanks for the editing tips! SOOOO helpful. Especially what to put in the beginning, middle, and end.
I don’t actually use my drone for all clips. I try to capture many different perspectives (high shots, low shots, up close details, and wide angles) and the drone is one of them. Drone footage can be a stunning perspective so I often use it as a sort of climatic point in the video.
I love the three comparisons! Something that is intriguing me is how everyone uses and doesn’t use transitions. I am struggling to no when not to use them and which ones to use at different times.

But I also own the Mini 3 Pro. i tell ya….that RC controller is truly worth the money for a few reasons. The Mini 3 is much quieter than the Mini 2 which I really appreciate. You’re asking for a suggestion…..The standard Mini 3 with the RC controller is an incredible value.

I know it's hard when you are given limited images to edit and tell a story. Your video with its surprise ending was at least smoother and entertaining. Thanks for the tips.
