I love listening to the elderly talk about times past. As a child I would listen to them talk while the other kids were playing. My grandma would tell me all about her life and her grandparents who were from Ireland, I would listen to her for hours. Having time with them is truly a blessing.
Me too. My mamaw and poppy got married and started a family later in life on account of ww2. Both (best anybody knew) born in 1916. My mamas grandpaw was born in 1900. Mom my great grandma was born in 1901 oe 02 i think. The stories ive heard....
One of the things I've always been happy with is the time I spent listening to Grandma, Grandpa and all the other old people talk about their life and times gone by. They were and are a priceless treasure trove of information.
I'M so happy to have discovered Celebrating Appalachia! Where I come from, women don't cook and bake anymore.. they're too busy and can't be bothered. I, on the other hand, LOVE TO COOK AND BAKE for the people I love! I am thoroughly enjoying these stories because they remind me of my childhood..Thank you for sharing!!
This is a moment to treasure, especially when you have photographs, you are so lucky to have this! My grandparents perished long before I was born, but I did have a great grandmother, she was 98 when she died in 1977, I remember her having two kitchens in her house, one for dairy, and the other one for meat, and saying Jewish prayers over us at night when us little children would go to sleep at night in front of one of the fireplaces, I will never forget my ti es there as a child!
My talking about kraut, pickled beans and corn, that is great eating. I live in SC, but my parents grew up in and around Copperhill,Tn., McCaysville,Ga., Wolf Creek, and Mineral Bluff. My great grandmother raised my dad, and they gardened everything summer making kraut, pickled corn and pickled beans. Yum.
What a precious lady. You're so lucky to still have her around. I miss my mama so much. I'm 63 & this past December 3rd she's been in heaven 20 years. Used to love to sit & listen to mama & daddy talk about their lives & stuff. I could sit for hours & listen to them even though I was a kid. Blessings to your mom, you & your family, Tipper! From rainy VA. 🌧
Growing up I was tight with all of my grandparents. Not many people can say they had one grandma who was born in the mountains of Norway and the other was born in a covered wagon in the Cherokee nation of Oklahoma. My Norwegian grandma skied to school. When she was two, her father made a pair of skis for her. I had cousins who hardly knew our grandparents and often ask me how I got so close and had so many stories of them and the struggles and joys of their lives. I just was interested in their lives and what it was like growing up. Just listen to them young people! Granny is a jewel, Tipper. My wife never learned to cook and couldn't even turn a stove on when we got married. I taught her what my mother and grandmothers taught me and she turned out to be one of the best cooks in the family. Love this channel.
God Bless you granny for your wisdom and memories...You sure are a precious jewel on this earth...may the Good Lord Bless and Keep you and your family Well and Safe!
I love hearing about your mom's life growing up. My grandmother was from NC and I don't really remember hearing much of anything about her life, even though she lived to 105! Gazzie Truett was my 10th cousin. Very, very distant, I know. Both my husband and I are also related to you through your dad. 😀
My Grannie (1924-2020) grew up on a peach and apple farm in south central Illinois so I loved hearing your momma talking about canned peaches. Well, I loved hearing her talking about everything. Thank you for sharing her with us. 🙏 God bless you Miss Louzine ❤
Granny reminds me of my Grammy Loretta who passed away this year. She outlived her husband by 20 years and then passed on his birthday. She wrote every one of her 10 kids and 50 grandkids cards on their birthday, even after it became difficult due to a stroke. I'll always remember sitting with her as a little girl and hearing stories just like this ❤
I love, love hearing from your granny. There is not a single thing that I don't like hearing here her talk about. She is really a treasure with all the stories and life experience that she has. I miss my granny and love hearing from yours. There is nothing like the love of a granny!
I love Grannys. They are the wisest people in our communities. I think it is just so wonderful that you are recording these oral histories for posterity. What a blessing. Thank you and say hey to Matt and the girls.
I love hearing from the Grandladies about how life was back in their days. I was fortunate to know my Great-grandma, Marianna, we called "Babcia" (Polish for Grandma), and me and my sister, back in the late '50's & 60's would spend summer weeks with her & her daughter, my Great-Aunt Veronica and her husband, Uncle Bill. My Aunt was a very good cook, and I learned to make pie crust from her. Your Granny and Pap were such a handsome couple. I liked her place mats, the stitch and her colors that she chose to match her curtains! I like that she pays attention to detail like that! I'm 68 and I like that way of matching things! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️You're both get 5 Stars!❤️
I am a new subscriber to your and your daughters channels. I love each and every video so far your cooking to the girls singing. I have being bing watching all day. And I have like every video. I am not big on commenting on peoples video's but I had to respond to this one. My Nannie was the love of my life and I miss her even after twenty years. Listening to your Granny reminds me of her. I don't know her but I fell in love with her in this video.
Always love when you have your momma on. So blessed to still have her. I'm with Granny I can't hardly wait for a fresh tomato out of the garden. Makes your mouth water just thinking of a fresh mater sammich . Really enjoy your family Tipper put Granny on at least a couple times a month. Like to hear from Paul too and see what he's been up to. Looking forward to tonight's video of Dorie of the mountain's. Hugs and blessings to all of you. Stay safe.
It was so refreshing to hear Granny acknowledge why so many of us don't have the time to can and preserve the way our Grandparents did. It is a source of guilt for me both because I was taught to do these things and food you grow does taste so much better.
Tipper, your mother is sooo very precious. I know you treasure every moment with her. My mother loved to crochet. She would have been 97 this year. I so enjoy hearing your mother talk about her life. Thank you so much!
Oh Tipper, what a treasure! I interviewed all of my mom's brother's and sisters. I would not take a million dollars for the stories they shared. The laughter that we shared and the feeling they were stars being interviewed was almost overwhelming. I interviewed two sisters together, and I have never laughed so hard at each of them trying to outdo the other. Wonderful memories and histories for generations to look back on. Thanks again...Love it!
God bless her. The things she has done and the things she has seen over the years. So sweet Tipper. Thanks you so much for sharing this wonderful video. Cherish her.
Gd bless granny an y’all. She is one of the reasons I served my country. To protect her freedom and her right to live free and live a happy life full of good memories. I'm going to guess that Granny is the young girl sitting in front of her father at 4:29 seconds. Thank you for blessing us with this video of Granny. We find ourselves in the strange place of being just a hand full of people away from being the "Old folks" in our families at this time of our lives. It's a real treasure to know future generations of your family and any viewers of these videos will be gifted just by watching, thanks again.
Granny is so sweet! I could listen to her tell stories about the old days for hours. Her placemats are so pretty, too, with the spring colors. Thank you for sharing!

This is wonderful. It's so interesting to hear her stories and thoughts - especially in the last few minutes of the video. When you ask about the convenience of the grocery store vs. doing it yourself. "Some people don't can nothing." = a wonder in her voice like "how can they survive like that?" - "It's a lot of help in the winter time" = canning helps her provide for her family - "I just mostly make homemade soup and green beans" = and then you name several other items she cans hahaha - "So many of them have to work" = like she doesn't??? hahaha - Thank you for saving and sharing this conversation!
Granny certainly is a special woman. I love to go visit, she is always crocheting something. I usually go to the gym in the morning then stop by to see her on my way home. In the fashion of true country hospitality, she always tries to feed me something or to stay and have lunch. She tells me stories of her family and we have a nice visit and all the time she is still crocheting!!
Tipper, your Momma is such a dear sweet, sweet woman. Tipper it's still snowing here. We have a 28 inch snow drift in front by the door. We're having 30-35 mph winds. The freezing rain and sleet stopped around 7 AM. Then the snow started. Supposed to stop snowing around 9PM tonight. I love your family videos with these sweet interviews. Thank you Tipper.🌹❤🌹
What a sweetie pie! You are so fortunate to still have your Mama around. Mine passed on in 2006, and I miss her so. Thank you for doing this interview with her. We should all do this before it is too late. Thanks!
She is a beautiful treasure, I could just set and listen to her forever. You guys are a sweet family. Good people I can tell. Thank you for sharing her.
Granny puts me in mind of my precious great grandmother on my Mom's side. Everybody in the family called her Mommy. Mommy used to tell us about what it was like when she was growing up. Mommy was a cook in a nearby school as well. She was well loved by the school kids. Fascinating to listen to what times gone by were like, especially in Appalachia. Times were hard, but in some ways they were better than today. Pap telling Granny he'd teach her to cook was so sweet! All that good cooking in your family was passed on from generation to generation and that's rare these days! ❤❤❤
This reminds of my Grandma's, both of them! On Sundays after Church and dinner we would sit and talk of the past. I could sit for hours listening.God bless you and yours! ❤🙏
What a sweet lady. She reminds me of my Mama who lived to be 97. She was a wonderful cook and loved to feed people. She had gardens, canned and preserved fruits and vegetables. Enjoy every day with your Mama!
God Bless her. She reminds me so much of both of my late grandmothers. They grew up more in the Piedmont during the Great Depression in North Carolina but they sounded just like Granny accent and all.
Tipper your mom is so sweet and soft spoken. Loved hearing her talk about her life growing up. And learning to cook. I loved when she said when she and your dad were courting she told him she couldn't cook. And he taught her some.she is awesome. Thank you for sharing her with us.
Thanks for sharing Granny with us. I can see why you and your daughters are so nice! It’s fascinating to hear about her younger life. I am 56 years old and have never seen anything being canned. It’s a different life! 💖
It's really great hearing her, I miss my Granny's quilt making, she also made doilies and needle point. She loved sawing on her treadle sawing machine.
Tipper your mom is so precious. She has such a sweet smile 😃. I'm glad she is still active crocheting, canning and those placemats look great. You can see by the old photos when she was younger that you look like her.
Granny is such a “Peach”! What a blessing that you have these talks on video. She reminds me of my Granny. I have a crocheted Angel I’m going to mail you. A good friend of mine used to make these but she’s moved to her daughter’s house now. Maybe Granny or Korie can figure out the pattern. I use mine as a bookmark in my Bible but I have also seen them hanging up or on a Christmas tree. 😇
Both of my grandmothers taught me how to make biscuits. Both were from Eastern Tennessee. My grandma on my mothers side made water biscuits...grandma on my fathers side made buttermilk biscuits. I used to make them for my wife and children at least twice a week on weekends and occasional weekdays. Of course, I included sausage gravy and eggs. It was always a debate which was better. I am partial to the water biscuits because I spent more time with grandma on my mothers side...but both were really good. I have slacked off since my children got married and moved away. This video has convinced me to start making both types again. I'm the only one in my family that can pass this along. Thank you for this channel...you are helping people like me understand the importance of passing along what we have been taught by our Appalachian families. It includes much more than biscuits, as I'm sure you know.
I was born at home i was born in a very small town in the Sao Miguel Azores. My grandmother was the mid wife in my little town. there was no electricity there at that time .I was almost 4 when we came to America in !966. have been here ever since. Your stories of Appalachian reminds me of the old country. Loved listening to granny! Such a beautiful family.
What a blessing she is! Reminds me of my own Granny, who's birthday is also in March. My little sweet Granny will be 90 this year. Hard to believe. I could listen to the Grandma's talk forever and a day! They have so much to teach us! And we have so much to learn! God bless!
I'm only part way through, but I'm enjoying listening while I cook supper!! She is precious! I agree with her, there's nothing better than a garden tomato! My great great grandmother cooked for the logging camp at Pisgah Forest. She had to make one hundred biscuits every morning!!
My mom is 89. She also said they kept peaches on the table about all the time. They would can 500 qts of peaches a year. This was mind blowing to me.... folks nowdays can't grow a peach here to save their lives. She said her granddad and father each had a peach orchard.
I love hearing your momma talk! I wish I had recorded my grandma when I was young. Grandma was a good cook I just wish I knew more how she did it we only got to be with her one week a year how I wish I could go back and record her☺️thank you for sharing your momma!
I Always Enjoy Watching your visits with Granny and Hearing her tell of Her Family..Also Good to see she seems to be Well. I also was Blessed with a Family of Good Cooks who FEED their Families & extras... Loved Her crocheting as Always. HOW OLD IS GRANNY ?? I wish I could still cook, Garden and can like I used to..But, never did I even come close to My Momma s gardening, canning sewing our clothes plus help Daddy on the farm, raise us 3 kids and work at a shoe factory for yrs. A garment factory & then nannied for yrs, until she had to have 4 way heart bypass surgery in her 70's..I MISS HER AND MY Daddy SO VERY MUCH..Thank You for giving us Another Sweet Visit with Granny. GOD BLESS YOU ALL & STAY WARM. We have loads of ice, & drifted snow here in MO. & single digits at night..no sun for days...
I wish you had a whole playlist of just talking to Granny. I love her so much. I’m in Ontario Canada in the Ottawa Valley. A lot of settlers here from Scotland and Ireland. They have a way of talking here that you don’t see outside the valley. If it’s dark night out “it’s as black as the inside of a cow”. I love your channel.
I moved to Charleston West Virginia in 1979 from Pennsylvania for work. I met and married a Clendenon man. He worked for Pennzoil. I learned so much about cooking during that time.
I love her ❤️💞she is the sweetest thing my heart just overflows with a happy comforting joy listening to her I could listen to he for hours, days ,months ,years what a gem 💎 she is a jewel of Appalachia 🦋☀️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️
I loved watching your sweet Mama and shes delightful. Reminds me of how much I miss my Granny and MummyLila and my Mama. Your Paps was very handsome and the rest of your family.

So glad you enjoyed it! Wish you could send me some snow 😀 Stay warm!!
Love your Granny videos❤❤
On Sundays after Church and dinner
we would sit and talk of the past.
How I wish the food would go down lord I could listen to her all day long and then some
God Bless her. She reminds me so much of both of my late grandmothers. They grew up more in the Piedmont during the Great Depression in North Carolina but they sounded just like Granny accent and all.
Thank you 😀
There's no substitute for experience.
She's a wonderful person. Kind of want to hug her once and sit a spell by the fire.
😀
Tipper your mom is so sweet and soft spoken. Loved hearing her talk about her life growing up. And learning to cook. I loved when she said when she and your dad were courting she told him she couldn't cook. And he taught her some.she is awesome. Thank you for sharing her with us.
😀 Thank you Linda!
I enjoyed this so much. Your mama is the sweetest thing, I love her quiet and calm demeanor. And your Pap was quite the looker! Great video 💜
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for sharing Granny with us. I can see why you and your daughters are so nice! It’s fascinating to hear about her younger life. I am 56 years old and have never seen anything being canned. It’s a different life! 💖
What a blessing Granny is.... And she was a looker back in the day! You got some good roots, Tipper...
😀 Thank you!
It's really great hearing her, I miss my Granny's quilt making, she also made doilies and needle point. She loved sawing on her treadle sawing machine.
Love chats with Granny, She's adorable!
That is so sweet-thank you Rhonda 😀
All that cookin and whose cookin has made me hungry! Sure miss my Momma's and Nanny's cookin! Beautiful! Loved it!
Thank you for the kind words!!
I just lost my 90 year old mom on January 16 and this sweet lady reminds me so much of her❤️
Oh my, I am so very sorry. There's nobody, like our Moms.. Mine's been gone many years.. May God comfort you..
God bless!
Your Granny sounds wonderful 😀
I love sweet old ladies. This is beautiful.
Just precious. Loved hearing your Granny’s sweet stories.
Bless you, Granny. I agree, a garden is one of God's treasures we can delight in. Such a treasure to delight in the stories of our elders.
I'm only part way through, but I'm enjoying listening while I cook supper!! She is precious! I agree with her, there's nothing better than a garden tomato!
My great great grandmother cooked for the logging camp at Pisgah Forest. She had to make one hundred biscuits every morning!!
Thank you! Love that 100 biscuits-can you imagine 😀
@@CelebratingAppalachia No, I can't imagine!! I loved the video! Thanks for sharing!
My mom is 89. She also said they kept peaches on the table about all the time. They would can 500 qts of peaches a year. This was mind blowing to me.... folks nowdays can't grow a peach here to save their lives. She said her granddad and father each had a peach orchard.
My goodness, now that is some major canning!!!
Thank you, Tipper, for sharing your sweet mama with those of us who no longer have ours with us. What a kind, gentle soul! ♥️

I love Granny and hearing her tell about her life.
Please, MORE GRANNY!
Y’all have the same eyes. ♥️😊
I moved to Charleston West Virginia in 1979 from Pennsylvania for work. I met and married a Clendenon man. He worked for Pennzoil. I learned so much about cooking during that time.
