Yes, please continue down this concept! Wobbly lines, great framing and stunning loose colors, to create a surreal image. This is something special, interesting and enchanting. Thank you.
That last touch with the framing is a wonderful touch. Love this loose style ! I’ve been having a lot of fun practicing with it in my own work. . Thanks so much Toby.
Hey Toby.. great piece great vid.. what I really love about this one is all the area you have left as the sky, with such lovely bleeding of colours lower down.. it’s a great contrast.. 😊
I think this freehand ink-line framing method is highly effective. It somehow adds pleasing structure and deliberateness while maintaining the loose abstract feel of the watercolour. Great videos.
Cheers from Seattle! Just found your channel yesterday and have been going thru your videos (and subscribed!). I love this style of abstract loose sketching and would love to see more!
I think it is fabulous and I absolutely love the framing. No drystone walls here (Australia) but I thought I'd pop the little house high up the page and use you inspirational colours on a long foreground. As if on top of a cliff.
You'll find some dry stone walls in Victoria, on the road south west from Melbourne heading through Colac towards Portland, up towards Maldon and lots more places. They're a wonderful feature, and you can only admire the skill and hard work of the creators. I heard some were made by Italian pows during the war but not sure if that's true.
The framing seems to pull the painting together so I love it. I have used this technique and it's always been admired. I am now off to try your advice with the fun colours.
I really like the frame, and also the greater use of color in this sketch. Yellows, ochers, and browns are not my favorite colors, so this color scheme is more appealing to my preferences even if they’re not realistic. Love the use of wet-on-wet for the color bleeds.
Just found this Toby (you tube algorithm) and loved it! I really like the abstract colours, I always love your pen work, I thought the frame gave it a nice finish. You really inspire me and I have a lovely sketch book now holding memories. I’m following all your advice and although I still have that skills gap folk talk about, I can see some improvements are happening YEY. I’m even getting decent at perspective now and then, thank you so much x x
It’s a super fun exercise and the framing is fab! You can tell how much you enjoyed doing it yourself. Thanks for the inspiration Toby….cheers from Arizona
Yes...very much enjoy these little quick loose sketches. I also like a bit of frame, perhaps a break in the frame here or there where the sketch extends out of frame.
So inspirational, and accessible, Toby. Thanks so much from Melbourne, Australia. I just love the looseness, and playfulness, and the finished product is so attractive and fun!
Really, and I do mean really, liked this lesson. Realized that one man’s quin… gold is not another’s, so I mixed Hansa yellow to get the effect I wanted. That in itself was worth the entry fee! Lines are still wispy but I think that is my style, like it or not. TY, Frances
Loved the hand drawn frame idea! First, I think it finishes off the sketch, elevates it in a way, like when you put a painting in a real frame. I’m experimenting with that ‘dreamy’ commingled color wash technique now but felt like it sometimes gets a bit toooooooo something. So I believe that framing it with a continuous line will make my eye feel like the ‘color chaos’ has been reigned in a bit.
This is great!! Your works are always so..vibrant.. my attempts are quite.. dull.. does the paper make a difference if color retention or something like this?

Thank you! Will do! In my recent 'stonehenge' video, the second painting was just like this one if you're interested!
I like the framing. It feels like I’m taking in the view through a window.
That's the feeling I get too!
Most expressive technique. Ta!

Paper and pigment can a different
What ink do you use in your Lamy? Must resist water so it can’t be regular fountain pen ink, I think.
Correct - check out urbansketch.co.uk/supplies-1 - my inks are listed there
I LOVE the various (and unexpected) colors and especially the frame at the end! This is one of my favorites that you've done.. .thank you Toby!!!
P.S. Spanish proverb - “When they give you ruled paper, write the other way.” Frances
Haha, this is an awesome proverb.
Without framing for me in this case
A fair thought
I love it!
Thanks
