Morris 8 Ep.5 - further fettling of the Morris' engine & underbonnet area

  • In ep.5 of the 1937 Morris 8 Series 1 resurrection series, work is done to the car's underbonnet area to make the engine bay look more appealing, in an "oily rag" kind of way. Also, the late 1930s Morris receives an oil change, has its engine breather cleaned in a bid to lessen the light oil haze from the exhaust, and also has a new set of HT spark plug leads made up for it. It took a few goes to get the engine running this time, I think it was a combination of the SU electric pump still not being 100% reliable, plus the plugs fouling slightly due to remnants of old fuel mixing with the new in the tank (I did drain it first, see earlier video). Hopefully, as this less-than-perfect fuel mixture burns off, the starting procedure will improve somewhat. More fresh fuel and engine runs required!
If you find cars of this era interesting, please consider liking this video and subscribing to the channel to catch future uploads, not just about the Morris 8, but classic cars and vintage cars in general. Don't forget, this isn't a classic car restoration channel or series, it's just me, an amateur old-car enthusiast, fettling away in his poorly-lit garage. Nothing in these videos is recommended practice!!

What size spanner did you use for the engine oil change? I have a 1937 Series 1 Tourer and my 15/16" spanner didn't quite fit. Good video, by the way.

A nice video, no music thank goodness. It takes me back to when I owned a Series 1 Morris 8, a Series E later on. It brings so many memories back, the tickler on the Su carb float chamber, and the brass damper nut that screws into the dashpot, long before plastic damper tops were introduced. The jet assembly with fibre washers that had to be centralised, I could go on and on. Many Thanks

Super video. Many thanks. The bulkhead has really cleaned up well. The old girl looks a treat.

About 30 years ago a friends father had one of these old cars. He had complained that the heater was so useless in even the Autumn or Spring that he was going to stop using it then. I said why not fit a heater from a mini or Austin 1100 type. So we were charged with doing the job. There was a scrapyard hunt first, then go get any new pipes etc. It was decided to use 25mm copper pipe as much as possible to cut down on flexible pipes that look much more modern. This pipe, was for his central heating being replaced and had been lying outside for a year, so it had an aged patina that would suit the car. The heater was mounted inside the cabin underneath the battery box. There was a good bit of plumbing to get it to work and then some metal folding to make a screen blower and heat to the feet. The owner had it for another 3 - 5 years before he sold it to go up to Yorkshire

On the subject of oil my farther always swore by Duckhams, I put it in my car and it was awful, I drained it out asap and put my usual Castrol GTX 20w 50w and it was much happier :)

Certain brands of oil seem to suit some engines better than others I've found, even though they're all "classic recommended" and of the same viscosity. Trial & error!

Thank-you for a proper video with no showing off or artificiality. Regrettable that you chose to soil an article about the Fiat 500 when using newsprint as a clean surface...shame on you. ;) PS, Obviously only joking. :)

I'll be more choosy next time, any preferences for articles to use instead? ;-)

Interesting video about a great little car the Morris 8. I learned to drive in one of these about 60 years ago. Nice that there are quite a few of them still around today, over 80 years old like me!

Given the Ferrero Rocher content, perhaps I should be working on an Ambassador, what with his parties etc etc ...? 😀

Do you think it's a good idea to solder the washer to the core on the distributor cap end ?

      @oldclassiccarUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I just do it the same as the originals were, soldering might work fine too

No No No, sorry but not the 20/50. As you haven't cleaned the sump out other than drop the oil, you will lift that sludge that is intended and will still be sat on the bottom of the sump, around the engine and onto the bearings. Use mono 30 SAE which is a non detergent oil and it will do what it is supposed to do at least until you remove the sump and clean the sludge out. The 20/50 will be a detergent oil that is intended to carry debris, before it enters the bearings, straight into the external oil filter which the Morris of course doesn't have. Some Members do use 20/50 and find sometimes a better oil pressure but they usually have either just rebuilt the engine or manually cleaned it out and then change every year regardless of mileage. Remember like your Minor these are white metal bearings not shells like the later E engine. Certainly never use flushing oil the original Service was to remove the sump periodically and cleanout the deposited sludge. (See FB Morris 8 for photo)

What a change to watch someone like you doing what needs to be done to bring that delightful Morris 8 back to life. Yes there may be some things that I might have done differently but the point is this car will be back on the road before long. The oil that came out was not as bad as it might have been and the crankcase breather ( draught tube) and valve cover was so clean I would not be too worried about using 20/50 - although (as has been mentioned) I would have inspected the sump first- but as I say it looks like a pretty clean engine and I would hope the oil burning will stop now. With regard to the mis fire; maybe a compression test to rule out a sticking valve.?
All in all a thoroughly enjoyable video. I am inspired to give it a go myself!

Hi Ray, give doing a video a whirl, it'd be interesting to follow what you're getting on with

Fair comment Richard, I did go for a low (non?) detergent classic/heritage 20/50 and it'll only be in a short while before I put the straight 30 in like I mentioned in the vid.
