Hey Mona, I’m 5th year pharmD, and I disagree that fruit sugars should be limited and are unhealthy if you eat too much. Since fruits have such a high fiber content, any unneeded nutrients will stick to the fiber and be eliminated! So don’t worry about fruit sugar. The things we need to be worried about are cooked foods, grains, and starches which clog up our digestive systems and back up our lymphatic system, which will then result in our bodies inability to remove toxins efficiently! And this is where ALL chronic disease comes from 🙏🏼 much love!

The amount of scientifically illiterate people trying to claim that "processed sugars" are somehow different than any other sugar is really disappointing.
You’re wrong. The body processes any sugars the same. Meaning, our Pancreas shoots out more and more insulin when you eat more and more sugar or things that turn into sugar like white potatoes, bread and pasta. There is never a reason any person should ever eat three or four bananas in one sitting. Ever.
@@BetterMe981Well, in my opinion you're also wrong. There's different kinds of sugars: Monosaccharid, Disaccharid and Polysaccharid. Mono are fructose, glucose and galactose. When ingested, they will be transorted to the blood almost immediately. The insulin will spike but you'll have digested it faster and get energy faster. But polysaccharids like starch (bread, potatoes etc.) and glycogen are digested in three steps, so it takes longer. What is better? It depends on what diet you have. Mono- and Disaccharid are not good for diabeticians. People who workout or run marathons and such need Monosaccharid before and during the workouts. By the way, I did an apprenticeship here in Switzerland in nutrition.
Your tip for making or eating an açai bowl is to not add many fruits in there, nor much milk. You don't put yogurt in there, and you devilize granola. What is left? One splash of almond milk, one açai packet, and less than a banana. Is it supposed to be sustaining anyone as a meal/breakfast? It might be okay for a snack at most. Honestly, I think that for a meal that mainly consists of fruits, it is okay to be adding multiple fruits in there. If you don't, you might not have much left to eat, as she did. Do not devilize fruits. They do contain sugar, but they are also packed with antioxidants, vitamins and some have lots of fiber (e.g. bananas), which can keep you full for a long time. I also think that if you are going to eat out, it is okay to order that açai bowl that you want. It is true that it may not be as healthy as making it at home, but it is certainly on the healthier side of foods you eat when eating out. If you really are concerned about the little sugar, the extra fruits, or the type of protein powder in your food, you might just want to eat at home instead.
I used to work at a health food bar. When making the acai bowl, we’d do 1/4 cup coconut water, 1 packet Acai, 1/2 frozen banana and 1/2 frozen mango. Fun fact: after rinsing water over the acai packet, carefully use a knife to cut packet in half. So much easier than cutting it💖 thanks for the video Doc!
yes it is lmao, too much calorie intake makes you gain weight, unless you’re bulking then i guess its fine but even then u eat protein high meals, not meals full of carbs.
@Mary i never said carbs were bad lol, obviously they’re not as almost all veggies n fruits are carbs, i said when u bulk u eat mainly protein high meals not meals full of carbs :)
@@WoodysOpinion101 Uneducated? Have you ever taken a biochemistry or nutrition class to learn how the body metabolizes different sugars? To put it simply, sugars like the ones found in fruits are almost always nutritionally dense. Eating nutritionally dense cals is the golden standard for anyone who truly wants to eat healthy because you end up intaking more nutrients than cals. Also, these sugars metabolize slower which allows the body to gradually return to homeostasis (this is good for the physiological and bioactive functions that happen within our body during this time). Sugars like the ones found in fast food are almost never nutritionally dense with high cals and they get metabolized faster which leads to the infamous “sugar crash”. Both sugars will still cause your body to produce insulin upon eating, therefore eating LOTS of fruit can give you diabetes. However, i find it rare for a human to eat an excess of fruit consistently to the point where they give themselves diabetes. With that being said, eating fruit in moderation is actually a very good thing. Anyone who believes different has been doomed from the start.
I make them all the time. I make two servings (one for me and one for my husband) and I only use 2 acai packets, 1/2 cup frozen berries, 1 frozen banana, and almond milk. It turns out beautiful and a perfect consistency. The toppings are just half a banana per bowl, a bit of granola, chia seeds, maybe 3 strawberries and shredded coconut. Super healthy and maybe 300-400 calories per bowl.
I appreciate your comments about this video. All she was trying to say was don’t be fooled into thinking something is healthy because it tastes good and is healthy in its NATURAL form! She’s trying to teach portion control, sugar intake and variety! The lady didn’t say hers was better tasting than the mainstream versions, she just offered an alternative for those who are smart enough to accept another point of view. Smh...
That's EXACTLY what I use on mine. Yesterday, I didn't have any chia seeds and used about 1/4 cup of Grape Nuts cereal, and it was freaking Awesome! Not sure if you've ever had them (Grape Nuts) but I used to top my yogurt with them, as they are healthier than granola, super crunchy, and have a delicious malty flavor.
Fruit isn't unhealthy. The fibre and water content slow the release of sugar in the bloodstream. Fruit sugar isn't the same as refined sugar. Fibre helps alot and obviously the vitamins/antioxidants.
Really, adding more fruit is unhealthy? Nothing wrong with sugar from fruit. Especially if you eat the whole fruit. The fruit contains fiber which slows the absorption of sugar, which prevents sugar spikes. Much better to eat an acai bowl full of fruit to curb your sweet tooth than a bowl of icecream or something.
You’re getting absolutely roasted in the comments. I’ll stick to my natural açaí bowls. It’s okay to eat them in moderation. It’s healthier than a lot of other options for breakfast.
I guess I can see your side on why sugar in fruit might be “unhealthy” in excess, but I have never heard a single soul say that berries are in ANY way shape or form bad for you.... I don’t understand why you didn’t top this bowl with some berries. This is like a banana açaí smoothie maybe.
As a Brazilian myself, açaí is perfect anytime! Make sure you don’t buy those with lots of bad sweetnesses because they’re unhealthy! It’s sad also they will never taste as good as the real one does

I seen this title and listened to the intro and honestly feel so defeated. I’ve been trying so hard to find a decent breakfast that I can actually enjoy as opposed to eating oatmeal everyday and thought I found it. I understand avoiding the added sugars bc they’re usually processed, but I didn’t think I was doing my body harm by adding a variety of berries. My bowl consists of açaí, oat milk, spinach, kale, carrots, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and bananas (it’s usually at least 2 servings). I don’t eat it everyday bc açaí is pretty expensive but I eat it about 3X a week. Idk tho :/ this video honestly just made me want to go eat something super unhealthy. But thanks for sharing!
My bowl (2 servings): I pack açaí 1 banana 1/4 cup of mixed berries Handful of spinach/kale 6-8 baby carrots About 1/4-1/2 cup of oat milk (or same recipe but use orange juice for smoothies). I’ll sometimes add a bit of avocado or coconut milk to help consistency. It’s typically the same amount of food I would eat in a standard salad.
My açaí bowl: in the blender - 2 packs of açaí, 1 banana, couple oz of guaraná syrup. Topped with blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and half banana, sometimes granola. Very healthy! Brazilian stores sellers guaraná syrup My wife adds condensed milk on hers, I find it too sweet.
I’ve been been eating açaí bowls for a while now and I wanted to share my recipe with you all! :) Ingredients/directions Put 1 unsweetened açaí packet in the blender. Frozen Banana slices, (I eyeball how much banana I put in the blender.) Frozen strawberries: (I also eyeball how much strawberries I put in the blender too.) Milk: (again I eyeball how much milk I put in the blender.) And yogurt! (I put one scoop of yogurt in the blender.) After you have all the ingredients in the blender. Blend it in the blender for one minute, (or 1 minute and 30 seconds if the smoothie hasn’t blended all the way yet.) Then when the smoothie is finished, put the smoothie in a bowl and put your toppings on (you can put any toppings you want on it!) But what I put on there is granola, mango, and strawberries. Enjoy!❤️😋
This is not Acai. I know your using an Acai packet and calling it an acai bowl yet its not the traditional way of making an acai bowl. Your bowl is super watery. It's also not a rich deep purple the way acai looks. In Brasil we NEVER use milk. Acai is 3 ingredients. Usually 2 packets of unsweetened Acai, frozen banana and guarana (another brasilian fruit for taste). That's ACAI. in America you guys make it with all kinds of things added that it's no longer Acai. Acai is pure not diluted.
What kind of depressing acai bowl is this!? I add acai, frozen blueberries, frozen strawberry, frozen kale, Spinach mix, unsweet almond + cashew milk that has protein 10g and pure Matcha from Shizuoka Japan. And just them all in vitamix nothing on top because I dont really care for granola or esthetics, not doing it for the gram just trying to stay healthy. There you get natural sugar for the morning, def more fiber than this depressing acai bowl, all the vitamins and electrolytes from the kale and spinach mix, way more antioxidants because I've added blueberry, strawberry AND Matcha. Matcha is known to have way more antioxidants than acai. The dairy free milk adds 10g protein which is a plus for anyone. I don't add banana now because it has more sugar which isn't bad, but when you're trying to tone your body you want to cut carbs. And I think people add banana for potassium, well kale has more potassium so that's the healthier option.
people eat açaí bowls/ smoothie bowls as an alternative to a breakfast like pancakes or something, this “too much sugar” mentality is ridiculous because this is not even catering to what our body needs. what u made looks gross and not filling for even my 4 year old sister. but to each it’s own i guess
Ma'am you're a black woman and acai by its self is a snack but can be combine with other fruit for great breakfast.....filling isn't what sustains you...quality does. Starch turns to glue in your digestive tract and causes inflammation..that's why your first meal should not be a heavy one...you meal should be something light, filling and full of energy...your midday meal should be the heaviest....don't be fooled by the big breakfast lie...
She *is* right about the fact that they will add processed sugar to fruit and that's what people have to keep in mind when ordering or buying. Natural sugars are mostly fine. Also, the US has an issue with some of the chemicals that they use on produce and that's another concern. But otherwise, as long as you do everything in moderation, you can typically mitigate the unhealthy practices that are common in the US food industry,
@@chipower3257 actually I understand. The sugars in fruits are completely different from added sugars and synthetic sugars. There’s all types of sugar. Glucose, sucrose, fructose, cellulose. They all digest differently. This video promotes this fear of eating fruits
Well I think this person has a point. This info isn’t wrong, but it’s a little selective. It’s not showing the whole picture, and as a result, is causing people who might not know as much to be misinformed.
Dr. Mona has a full catalogue of videos where she breaks down many things, including the importance of eating fruits and that you shouldn't avoid them. So I think this is just one video where she is saying ~"hey here's an option with little to no sugar. p.s. also buyer beware when eating this out and thinking its *healthy* because it isn't always"
Here I am watching this video right now while eating Açaí Bowl for the very first time. Haha! I didn't like it the first bite because it's sweet, and now I have the answer 🤣 I thought of this as healthy and when I taste it, I was like nahhhh it's too sweet it's not healthy. So now I'm inspired to make my own Açaí Bowl. Thanks for sharing this video.
Melanie S if i were you I’d make my own TH-cam channel sharing my own preferences, and hope people care to watch and comment. Until then, keep sharing your thoughts on the sidelines, they aren’t stopping anyone from moving forward
@@DrMonaVand Thought on sidelines that give accurate information are actually more helpful than your main video. Have you ever heard anyone complain “omg I’m so fat because I eat too much fruits”? Your fear of fructose in fruits is ridiculous and moronic.
Me personally, I add two handfuls of spinach or mixed greens and 1/4 cup offrozen berries mix and a tablespoon of banana and I will add sum muscle milk and I’ll top it with unsweetened coconut and blue berries and the lowest sugar and carb oat mix I can find..lol and top with honey and that normally satisfies my sweet craving for the day... Also the toppings are small amounts just for alittle decoration
When I order them I have the naturally sweeter (per glycemic index) removed or reduced, remove the added sweeteners (often agave) and add chia. And, because I don't use "nutritive" add ons shops offer (ex, vitamin, immune, protein "boosters") because too often they aren't quality or absorbable versions. I also make acai bowls at home. I always use Sambazon zero sugar acai. It's really the best option in my area.
So many haters in the comments, geez. All she's saying is that some acai bowls from smoothie places contain added (i.e refined, processed, no fiber) sugar to their bowls which adds empty calories and many people don't realize that. Sometimes the sugar is added in the form of honey, maple syrup, or agave. Yes, these are technically 'unrefined' but they do not contain fiber and only add extra calories. Honey and agave are particularly sneaky because of the high amounts of fructose. Fructose in fruit is different because fruit has fiber and other nutrients so its not digested the same way as honey or agave. The point she's making is that people think they're being healthy but they don't realize how much all the extra honey, maple syrup, agave, sweetened granola, or the sheer amount of fruit (like her 4 bananas example) really adds up. She literally said she doesn't have a problem with sugar in fruit. Where did she say people should be scared of eating fruit because of the sugar? She just advised people not to go overboard, as in, don't drink 4 bananas in a smoothie if you wouldn't actually eat 4 bananas in 1 sitting or eat 4 whole bananas in the course of a day. That's good advice. And it goes for ANYTHING, not just fruit. Also, how is this bowl sad? She'd rather not drink the equivalent of a pound of fruit for breakfast, what's wrong with that? A lot of people don't even eat breakfast at all or just have coffee and maybe a granola bar. At least she's having something. The toppings look pretty standard too. Who gives a shit if its 'boring', it doesn't have to be Instagram Perfect to taste good or have 10 different ingredients in it to be good for you.
@@theawakeningofjascdy just because something is ¨natural¨ dont mean is healthy. Such a great video - I definitely used to indulge in the not so healthy açaí bowls. Now I always make them at home pretty much. I was thinking of getting the açaí powder to substitute for the frozen packets to make an açaí bowl. Do you think that would work? I just hate all the plastic wrapping 😭
I get the Nativas brand I believe. It tastes super fresh and a little bitter. It is unsweetened but delicious! All I do is tie it and refrigerate to keep it fresh.
I do half açaí packet, 1 banana, a few berries, and hemp milk. I top it with a little granola, and assorted fruit. All together that’s enough fruit for the day.
It's funny how people are saying it's looking sad, but she's right about Acai Bowls having too much fruit and hence, too much sugar, even if we can digest fructose better. I've been making even sadder looking acai bowls just with Acai Powder, Stevia and Chia Seeds and to me, they're great that way, so hers is definitely looking waaaay prettier than mine, lol. Don't be all about looks with these bowls 😁
@@deliafuchs2138 Then eat it as dessert if it's not a full meal? I never said this was a full meal, I said my acai bowls (that I did over a year ago) were sadder-looking. If you like sugary meals/snacks then good for you, anybody can eat whatever they want, just as I ate my Acai Bowls not full of fruit and granola-less, just because I wanted to do it
Refined sugar messes with hormones and sugar should always be only the daily intake. Each person has there own amount of sugar that is needed. Not everyone takes the same amount of anything. Fruits and veggies have natural sugar that is made differently and it does not count towards your daily intake.
Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your recipe. Sorry ppl are being so mean, it’s not like you’re holding a gun over their heads to make it this way, it’s just a suggestion, they can add whatever they want 🙄...
I for sure stay away from sugar because I'm diabetic. Thanks for this video! One thing I normally do instead of banana is use avocado because it has that rich flavor similar to banana. I call bananas and avocados "buffers" for smoothies. Btw same here with the vitamix. I love how smooth it makes things. I have a nutribullet but it's usually it I just want something quick on the run. I also add a small amount of pure stevia extract. Not the processed stuff that has chemicals and maltodextrin but comes right off the leaf. Great info!
The amount of people who care about the health aspect is a SMALL niche, and doesn’t outweigh the fact that a sweeter bowl is better for sustaining a business..

This is a big bowl of fruit high in calories and topped with more fruits and other varieties of topping. The market hypes it up. But the health benefits are true about Acai. Acai is not sweet. If it's sweet you need to ask what is being put in. I order one for the first time and it was small for 600 calories. Almost a meal plus a snack for a small bowl. I would like to make my own modification that benefits ME. I am watching calories so I do not want to eat 3 bananas, some strawberries, berries mixed w acai then topped w half a mango and so on. I need protein, VEGGIES and healthy carbs w my main meals.
Sugar in general is unhealthy, that’s true, but when you eat naturally occurring sugars in conjunction with a good amount of fiber, it’s much easier for your body to process in a way that’s not going to have as much of a negative impact as eating pure sugar by itself. For example, it’s better to add whole fruits that are higher in sugars than it is to add a sweetener (granulated sugar, maple syrup, etc), and considering that you’re getting vitamins and nutrients along with that sugar, it’s definitely not a loss. I think people get unnecessarily scared by all this when they don’t know all the biology behind it (ofc what I’m saying still isn’t in much detail), but sugar is not your enemy. Leave that in the late 20th century. But of course- moderation is key, like with anything else!
What a clickbate statement. I agree with her concerns over sugar but it's a consumer choice whether they want to buy sweetened or unsweetened. The point of açai is that you can decide how you want your açai bowl served, healthy or healthly with some added sugar [treats]. Pleasing everyone is a good thing, the more açai sold, the more of the rainforest will be saved. I would argue that 'most' açai bowls are healthy despite what this video says

@@Larissa-sd8uk the truth is it depends on what they use to process the sugar

Imagine making a comment that is uneducated... that is you!😂
that is true too
@@WoodysOpinion101 Uneducated?
Smh...
@@NurseAuDream326 Smh to you. C Sasani Didn’t say anything negative about the lady’s video. How do you see it that way?

🤣🤣🤣
lol!!
My bowl (2 servings):
I pack açaí
1 banana
1/4 cup of mixed berries
Handful of spinach/kale
6-8 baby carrots
About 1/4-1/2 cup of oat milk (or same recipe but use orange juice for smoothies).
I’ll sometimes add a bit of avocado or coconut milk to help consistency.
It’s typically the same amount of food I would eat in a standard salad.
This sounds perfectly healthy
I blend my açaí with frozen papaya, when I don't have the frozen packs I add 2TB of the açaí powder!
@brunitute2009 I would go for papaya or pineapple. I am in Canada. What brand of açaí powder do you usually buy? Thank you! Yvette
My açaí bowl: in the blender - 2 packs of açaí, 1 banana, couple oz of guaraná syrup.
Topped with blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and half banana, sometimes granola. Very healthy! Brazilian stores sellers guaraná syrup
My wife adds condensed milk on hers, I find it too sweet.
I make it but add more stuff, I add protein powder, Flaxseed, a little yogurt, oatmeal and chia seeds. You can also add unsweetened cocoa.
I’ve been been eating açaí bowls for a while now and I wanted to share my recipe with you all! :)
Ingredients/directions
Put 1 unsweetened açaí packet in the blender.
Frozen Banana slices, (I eyeball how much banana I put in the blender.)
Frozen strawberries: (I also eyeball how much strawberries I put in the blender too.)
Milk: (again I eyeball how much milk I put in the blender.)
And yogurt! (I put one scoop of yogurt in the blender.)
After you have all the ingredients in the blender.
Enjoy!❤️😋
Thank you sounds yummy
This is not Acai. I know your using an Acai packet and calling it an acai bowl yet its not the traditional way of making an acai bowl. Your bowl is super watery. It's also not a rich deep purple the way acai looks. In Brasil we NEVER use milk. Acai is 3 ingredients. Usually 2 packets of unsweetened Acai, frozen banana and guarana (another brasilian fruit for taste). That's ACAI. in America you guys make it with all kinds of things added that it's no longer Acai. Acai is pure not diluted.
Sambazon is not a good brand in my opinion. It tastes so bad

I love adding blueberries, mixed berries, ripple milk, walnuts, vanilla protein powder and golden kiwi! It taste amazing!!

She *is* right about the fact that they will add processed sugar to fruit and that's what people have to keep in mind when ordering or buying. Natural sugars are mostly fine. Also, the US has an issue with some of the chemicals that they use on produce and that's another concern. But otherwise, as long as you do everything in moderation, you can typically mitigate the unhealthy practices that are common in the US food industry,
I think acai blends better in a food processor. I just add frozen banana and no liquid at all and it's nice and thick.

Oooohhh...I have been avoiding acai for the plastic waste as well! The powder is an interesting thought.
I get the Nativas brand I believe. It tastes super fresh and a little bitter. It is unsweetened but delicious! All I do is tie it and refrigerate to keep it fresh.
The Navitas acai powder works well. More economical on Amazon vs brick & mortar stores.
I do half açaí packet, 1 banana, a few berries, and hemp milk.
I top it with a little granola, and assorted fruit.
All together that’s enough fruit for the day.

Refined sugar messes with hormones and sugar should always be only the daily intake. Each person has there own amount of sugar that is needed. Not everyone takes the same amount of anything. Fruits and veggies have natural sugar that is made differently and it does not count towards your daily intake.

Absolutely love watching your videos!!
Why does it looks like it has to see a specialist for depression ma'am?
