  • Jeff visits the Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California where he finally found the crypt of Mount Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum, composer Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Red Skelton and Sid Grauman. He also checks out the Wee Kirk of the Heather Chapel on the cemetery grounds where Ronald Reagan married Jane Wyman.

My wife and I took her mom and dad to this Forest Lawn in Glendale. Her mom was a huge fan of Clark Gable who’s in the Great Mausoleum. As a favor to her, the attendant ushered us to his resting place. Her dad was an avid reader of western writer Louis L’Amour. His grave is just outside the Great Mausoleum to the right as you’re facing the entrance. The attendant asked him if he was a fan. When he said yes she offered him a Louis L’Amour book that she said his family offers to his fans. He actually found one he didn’t yet own. It was a memorable experience. Thank you Jeff for this walk down memory lane.

I was just reading the memoirs of a comedian named Jimmy Kennedy, and he spoke fondly of Red Skelton. “Keep it clean, Jimmy.” That was Red’s advice to Jimmy about how to make his act big in the industry. (That advice would definitely not work today, sadly.) I’ve always loved Red’s films, and his show, I consider him one of the absolute funniest comedians of all-time. And it seems he was just as nice a man as he was a funny comedian. Thank you for sharing your trip to his grave with us.

As a kid we lived in the "Adam's Hill" area of Glendale and if you stood in our backyard and looked up you could see the back wall of Forest Lawn which was a few streets above us. It was all well and fine until you were out back at night and your older brother would tell you how at night all the ghosts of those buried there would get up and walk around.

You probably saw my brother and sister with their friends running around the place at night dodging the security guards back in the day right before Halloween. There was a hole under the wall they would slide under and go in as dares to find famous graves at night and touch them. They did say they saw what looked like greenish mist moving around on the grounds. They never stayed long enough to see if it was a trick of the light. I lived in the neighborhood between, San Fernando Blvd and Glendale Ave, behind the Seelys Furniture store right next to the underpass and railroad tracks on Gardena Ave. I could see the cross on top of The Hall of Crucifixion-Resurrection from my bedroom lit up at night. Watched them change it from a cross to a star every Christmas season and back after New Year's.

I was there a week ago and, apart from visiting those graves mentioned here, I also had the privilege to see those others in the film world: actors Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Jean Harlow, Norma Shearer and Keenan Wynn; character actors Charley Grapewin and Henry Travers; comedians W. C. Fields, Ed Wynn and Harold Lloyd; and producers David O. Selznick and Irving Thalberg. I noted Michael Jackson's from a distance, but it is currently cordoned off w/ drapery and therefore blocked from sight. Oh Jeff, I know it's rude to brag, but I have to brag of the fact that my mom and I were WAY ahead of everybody else. I was about 15 - so this would be around 1975 - when my mom's boyfriend very matter-of-factly said how many famous people were seemingly buried at Forest Lawn Glendale. Mom suggested we should go, walk around, and see what we find. And we found plenty - the mausoleum was open to the public at that time. But obviously it caught on and the place was being overran with souvenir hunters forcing it to be shut off from the public. So obviously my timing was good. As for the this video, when I saw the Wee Kirk O'The Heather church, an idea came to me that I'm pitching to you. Yes, there was a ton of famous funerals there. But one in particular stands out. This person is either pretty much forgotten about or pushed into the background that nobody realizes the extent of his popularity when he died. Were you aware that this was the site of the funeral of......Will Rogers? As far as I know, the record still holds - but Will Rogers holds the record for the most flowers sent to Forest Lawn Glendale. They estimated that approximately 70,000 people walked by his casket when it was on display near the gate for 5 hours, and that the crowds were so respectful that no police were needed. At the same time his funeral was being held in this little church (attended by just family and close friends), the Hollywood Bowl was holding a memorial service. Every seat was filled - and there are 17,000 seats. And that goes for the rest of the country. Memorial services were held all across the U.S. and all reported full capacities. You should do a video on just the reaction to Will Rogers death. Oh, and he was interred in the Great Mausoleum for 9 years until a special made mausoleum was built at his Memorial Museum in Oklahoma. He was exhumed in 1944 and sent to Oklahoma where he now rests. And guess what? You said things in this video I did not know - so heck, I still have a lot to learn. Hehehe.

Thank you , Jeff and Happy Easter! You made me feel better as always. You have that gift… uplifting us and allowing us to just be happy to be in your company. Red Skelton was marvelous. What a stoic man to take his dear son on that trip. His son was absolutely darling. I’m glad the three of them are entombed there together. Dad, Mom and all of us kids would watch his show every week. Dad laughed so hard. My family also has the utmost respect for Ronald Reagan. Dad would get tears watching is press addresses. Wow!! Easter is such a blessing, and thank you so much for being a blessing to me
