@@strongfish92 I think under certain circumstances working under constraints and deadlines makes the product better. If well and properly thought out I think the emotion in music can get overshadowed by logical thinking. While I don’t promote it I think it’s an effective way to get a damn good song as Hakita has proven. Another great example is Daredevil from Ace Combat 7, written in like the final month before the game launched

ULTRAKILL is a game that means a lot to me. It gave me hope in an otherwise utterly hopeless time in my life, and being able to make memes and contribute to the community has been a genuine joy and an absolute pleasure.
I think what a lot of people don't talk about as much are the phenomenal overarching themes of the game. In a world where gods and angels blindly kill and follow orders to maintain tradition, the fire is gone. The only human thing that remains in this broken world is the songs that play in the terminals. Thinking for a second about what you're killing in the game, they're zombies. Husks. Amalgamations of flesh and stone. Twisted, hollow remnants of humanity, with the only thing of value remaining to be their blood. Although, yes, you are purging all the life on the upper layers, was there ever any life to begin with? Some of these beings have turned to worship, like the Sisyphean Insurrectionists and the Ferryman; all worshipping others they don’t truly grasp the intent of, nor are they aware of the circumstances behind their actions. Minos is a prime example of a lot of the game's themes; a phantom chasing phantoms. The literal ghost of man unable to come to terms with what the world has become because he refuses to see any alternate solution other than killing you, his freer.
Perhaps I'm reading far too much into this. Maybe I'm seeing too much in a silly game where robots murder everything in sight in hell.
But when everything does crumble to ash, all life in hell is eradicated entirely, and that terminal does sing,
I might just cry.

Hakita is a frenzied artist for sure; he apparently grinded out Gabriel’s theme less than 24 hours before the release, and afterwards the toll of the stress on his body caused him to vomit for hours.
I really hope he balances his work in the future, because that’s fucking insane, but also, holy shit, I sometimes wish I had such a level of dedication to art that I became physically ill from the fervor of my work.
Everything about this game from it’s gameplay, lore, soundtrack, characters, and even development is fucking metal. This is already my second favorite game of all time and it isn’t even done.

I remember 1-3 so vividly. One of the first levels i played, i got my ass handed to me by the hideous mass, time, after time, after time. That was probably the first part of the game i really got stuck on for a bit.
In an absolute genius display of game design, these scene happens
*two* of the masses spawn in, with the most badass remix of Castle Vein you could ask for
Tearing them both apart with all my new tools, and especially my new knowledge, I felt truly unstoppable
Literally the same way I felt. The musical leitmotif really helps hammer in the badass feeling that we've come looong ways to get to where we are now, and we've all become unstoppable killing machines in the process. Kind of an "all grown up, I'm a big boy now" feeling.
1-3 is one of the first levels ANYONE plays...

In the picture for The Death of God's Will, who is Gabriel stabbing? I don't know if that's a councilor member, or if it's Gabriel striking himself down (death of his identity as the Righteous Hand of the Father or the death of his faith), I do prefer the latter interpretation but I'd love to hear what it is.
It's Gabriel stabbing his false self. It's the death of God's Will (a title he has sometimes been called) because he now acts of his own will.

I literally can't stop listening to Altars of Apostasy, it may be the best piece of music I've ever heard in a game. The feeling I had when I heard it ingame for the first time was something completely new to me, I was almost jumping on my chair when the Castle Vein remix came.
I'm so infatuated by this game I'm beginning to think some black magic is involved in it.

I took a bit of time to find other songs in the black metal genre that were close to it (I haven't really listened to that genre before) and I could not find anything that could match the emotions, the story, and the richness that was in AoA. Fucking amazing, I thought ORDER was peak ULTRAKILL and Hakita somehow topped that by multitudes. I can listen to a song I like multitudes of times in loop, but I don't think I've ever listened to the same piece of music every day for SEVEN MONTHS STRAIGHT since the update released. If I could extract every thought I've had while listening to this single, I'd have an essay piece on my hands.

I'm glad I discovered how GOOD this game was just before Act 2 dropped. I regret not having played it earlier, this game has quickly become a favorite of mine. Good work, Hakita, PITR, and everybody else who worked on this. ULTRAKILL is, by all definitions, a masterpiece, and it's not even finished.
I have the same feeling but mine was about 6 months ago. I can imagine how much fun it was to discover this game right now where it is even better and it will always get better.

it's a just brief switch to triplets, a rhythmic subdivision of a longer note into 3 instead of 2 like the "normal" ones. Depending on if it faster or slower (let's say, from 8th notes you could go to quarter note triplets or 8th triplets) it could create an accelerated or, as used here, stumbling sort of feel
Oh man what can I say....this soundtrack is truly incredible. The atmosphere it creates, the pacing, how each track encapsulates the feeling and essence of each level. I mean the sheer complexity of some of these tracks is impressive on its own. This is honestly another step up from Act 1's already extremely solid soundtrack and it never ceases to amaze me, by the way, how you're producing OST of this quality whilst building the entire game at the same time. Also I really appreciate the transitions not only between songs, but within the songs themselves; a perfect example of this is the melancholic string and harpsichord opening of 5-2 perfectly setting the stage for the ferrymans theme to come out of nowhere and absolutely hit like a train. It really helps the soundtrack feel like a musical landscape, as opposed to just a collection of tracks stacked together. It's been awesome to see your composition style develop as the game progresses too, and I wish you all the good luck with the development of Act 3 and its music. I'm gonna have this one on repeat for a long while :)
ULTRAKILL is a game about killing and becoming better.
This game has done alot more to me than make me better at aiming. This game has started my music career, my love and interest in the genres I produce. It showed me amen breaks, my favorite aspect to use in any song, it showed me how I should use distortion correctly, it showed me how to add layers to a song, make it more filled.
This game is truly a masterpiece, even though its made by 2 people (I think, not including Gianni or Dave).

It's crazy how hakita is versatile in these soundtracks. The guy can go from a violent breakcore to some really melancholic and chill tunes. I've rarely seen this kind of mastery in music before.
I just noticed that in the art of Gabriel piercing someone with his spear, it's not V1 like I'd originally thought. Rather, it's Gabriel himself. Likely an illustration of how he changes after the events of 6-2, the angel that served in the name of God is dead. now only exists an angel who shall liberate heaven from the council's rule.
Could also be a council member. And if you look closer its like the spear is also going through his own head, symbolizing the how he basically finished himself off (both his image, and literally his life, since he cant really live without the gods light) by killing the council. And to top off the message of "betraying god", the sillhouette of the drawing is an upside down cross

Seeing a ocean of endless arms desperately reaching out for some savor to rescue them from this perpetual torment combined with seeing the titanic a ship were so many lost their lives to the cold dark ocean raise out of the water set the mood perfectly for me.
We are all always so focused on V1 being an unstable badass that no one stops to think how tragically humanity ended and what this machine with artificial intelligence thinks or feels about this. Dose it just run by focused on its mission with no distractions or dose it take a second to feel the dread and pain for those still trapped under. Desperately wanting to reach out to pull one of these hands out and save one of these innocent souls from undeserved eternal damnation knowing all to well that if it did it would be pulled under too. To become another desperately reaching hand out of this endless sea. I suppose it’s up to how the player reacts because after all

I feel that in Ultrakill's soundtrack , the various instruments represent a lot of what is actually going on in the game . The electric guitar mainly represents V1 , so in Act 1 the earlier tracks have alot of heavy guitar sounds , as if V1 himself is "talking" in the soundtrack (or just losing it) . Drums i feel like they represent Hell itself , and the other instruments represent the bosses or a certain map of a level (e.g Castle Vein) . I noticed that , especially in boss fight tracks , it's almost as if the main instrument of the track is kinda "interrupted"(or just plays on top of it) by heavy guitar that play the same notes , like a battle for which instrument overtakes the other , like a fight . For example , in death of god's will , the main leitmotif switches between Gabriel's instruments ( i think its the violin and the choir) and V1's ( guitar ) . It feels like the instruments themselves are fighting each other while you fight with Gabriel . And since V1 always wins since he is the player , the final moments of the major bossfight songs dont have guitar , but have a slowly fading outro mainly played by the boss's instrument or just have no guitar by the end , signifying that they lost the fight . The guitar is constant in almost every song , while the rest aren't as common . Since the only constant is that v1 is there and he is the only one left alive by the end , the guitar gets to continue being in other tracks while you will not hear King Minos' violin again since you killed him .

Man who fuckin knows what act 3 is gonna be like like holy shit act 2 blew me away especially the ost it's the most dynamic and fun the soundtrack has ever been. Not sure what hakkita has in mind for the next act but I hope it's as fuckin good as this act because not only does it kick the most ass so much ass, the levels were fucking fantastic. Love this damn game so much I have like over 3,000 hours on this game alone.

@@halfmettlealchemist8076 There is one possibility I can think of. The Leviathan was made out of the bodies of the Sullen, which are those who gave up fighting in the ocean Styx. Its heart is made up of their souls. Said heart tried to escape its body, but Gabriel struck it down, pinning it back onto its head. This all sounds familiar. Gabriel was the one who trapped Minos' soul inside the flesh prison, because of the threat that prime souls pose to heaven. I think it's reasonable to assume that the heart of the Leviathan was also deemed dangerous to heaven. And now that we've killed the Leviathan, it's very likely that we're just released the souls of the Sullen.

That Castle Vein motif was a genius move by Hakita.
Hideous Masses is one of the most meaningful enemies in the game, because when I played the demo version and was saving money to get the full game, a Hideous Mass would spawn at 1-1, ending the demo. I then watched some gameplay videos, which confused me when I didn't see the Hideous Mass in 1-1 but in 1-3 instead.
When I finally bought the game, I quickly progressed to 1-3 and found the Hideous Mass. I died so many times, even in the Standard difficulty. Even though to this day, I still fear the Hideous Mass, but it's still one of my favorites, and it brings me back to "the old days" where I didn't have the full game.
When they first appear as a normal enemy in 6-1, and the motif plays, it really feels like Hakita knew what he was doing when he was creating that mission. Surely one of my favorite video game OST motifs.

The plot is so much more harrowing that I would have ever thought.. Not only did the machines exterminate all of humanity, but now they, likely thousands of bloodlusted metal beings with insatiable hunger are following in the player's wake, and there's no God to put an end to this. Everyone was left at the mercy of the machines, even heaven.
i have a feeling that it wasnt the machines that killed humanity as i dont think its ever explicitly stated that that is what happened, but thats just my theory
@@cuboxy it’s genuinely most likely the machines. You are right that it’s never out right states what Caused humanity to end but the machines are the only possible candidate. Hell was being tapped into by humanity sure but almost everything there is either too deep into hell or not intelligent enough to even think of leaving. Then again prelude exists filled with husks so take this with a grain of salt.

My favorite part in this act was when Gabriel said "YOUR ULTRAMURDER ULTRAENDS ULTRAHERE ULTRAMACHINE!" and *ULTRAKILLED* the shit out of V1.

Hakita has such energy to not only make continuous kickass songs, but also to set in a certain emotion. For example, realizing V2 is gonna be the boss at the beginning of 4-4 with his leitmotif, fan-girling over the newly added saxophone solo in Deep Blue mid-level, and essentially ALL of the music in 6-1, the damned beginning, the buildup to the main part of the level, and the return of the Hideous Mass. It made my heart pound constantly, an experience I essentially *never* have gaming, but this very game is so, so very special

6-1's track is one of the best songs I've seen in gaming, it perfectly captures the theme of the level and context and is beautifully done. The combined motifs and perfect guitar chord progression is amazing. I've been listening to this on repeat since release of the act.

Ultrakill might be one of the first games that made a water level that has fantastic music and also doesn't suck.
Sweet baby jesus, "Deep Blue" Is simultaneously energetic yet calming. And the fact it gets muffled when you go underwater....just, *muah*.
And the sax... don't even get me started on that beautiful sax!!!

I love 5-3 cause it has solid gameplay i love. Im not the biggest fan of 6-1 due to the many pitfalls. I like closed in levels more, with plenty of ground to style on. 6-1 is still really good.

The two sections from 44:47 - 45:14 and 46:44 - 47:23 respectively are some of my favourite returns to leitmotif in this game's entire soundtrack - they evoke a feeling different from any other (in my opinion), saying "you're here, you're doing wonderfully, keep going." Of course, add the Glory leitmotif to the mix as well as the stunning extension the second time it comes around, and you have a piece I really can't stop listening to, in game and out of it.
Not forgetting the Castle Vein drop moments later mind you, the twin health bars appearing as Gabriel finishes speaking and it cuts in were an experience I already know Act III will bring back to me. Oh, and the piano at the end is just incredible, especially at the climax (1:00:26) - I wish I took longer to read the dialogue so I heard it ingame, the tone is perfect.
You're a mad genius, Hakita - thank you.
Edit: oh my god, and The Death of God's Will??! Hearing the drop at 51:10 ingame was a religious experience having listened to Divine Intervention a LOT, brought to new heights by Gianni's perfect voice work, as usual. Seriously, I can't praise this music enough, the game is something else.
