@@davidzaydullin It's basically a way of organizing a song to make the notes make more sense. Pull up a random song on a radio and count "1,2,3,4" in your head repeatedly, and most songs will fall in line with that way of counting. That's called a 4/4 time signature, which is the most common found in music. Music like Ultrakill is more chaotic and usually goes crazy with time signatures and it makes it really unpredictable as well as a ton of other things. In this case, relentless and angry, raging even.

A 'quick' explanation of who Minos is:
Ultrakill's story adapts its own version of Dante's Inferno with the whole 9 circles of hell thing, with limbo, lust, gluttony etc. Minos was the benevolent king of the lust layer, who thought Heavens eternal punishment of those who's only sin was to love another was unfair, so when god disappeared and Heaven was in chaos, he started the Lust renaissance, reforming the layer into a new civilization free of its punishment.
However when the council was formed and took control of Heaven again, they quickly sent Gabriel, the brightest of the Angels, to kill Minos. Minos did not fight back, instead trying to plead for reason and empathy, but was mercilessly killed by Gabriel anyway. The angels, fearing that Minos' will was strong enough to defy Heavens rule, imprisoned his soul in the flesh prison in an attempt to prevent it from forming into a prime soul, a being so powerful that even Heaven feared it. Minos watched from within his prison as his corpse, now controlled by parasites, destroyed everything he had worked so hard to achieve, and vowing to take revenge.
Another thing to note about Minos is how he refers to the player character, V1, as a creature of steel, and not just a machine. It goes to show how much respect he has for it in contrast to somebody like Gabriel, who detests V1 and seeing it "as a mere object".

Ah, the “P-1 Suite”. Technically 3 songs that play for a secret level:
    1. The Spinal Staircase, a simple descent down a massive, twisting spine.
    2. Chaos, which plays when fighting the mindless Flesh Prison. It attacks you to prevent you freeing its prisoner.
    3. And finally, Order, which is the theme of the Flesh Prison’s captive: the Soul of King Minos, AKA Minos Prime. A noble king who loves mankind dearly, and that love compels him to attack your character. After all, your character is an AI, and the AIs did terrible things to mankind.
Humanity has had some bad things happen to them in Ultrakill, and Minos is perhaps the only character we know of who actually tried very hard to protect and care for mankind.

Minos is derived from Dante's Inferno, where he is the judge of hell. This game takes place after God has "vanished", which threw heaven into disorder. While this happened, Minos, deeming the people of the Lust layer of hell (second layer according to the divine comedy) to be unfairly punished simply because "they loved each other". So, he helped them to build a sprawling city, ruled over them justly, and brought an age of prosperity to the layer. However, once heaven had sorted things out with God vanishing, the arch-angel Gabriel was sent down to kill Minos for turning against the will of God. Minos tried to be diplomatic about it, yet Gabriel struck him dead, forcing his corpse to wander through the city he created, destroying everything he worked for.
This is where the Prime Soul comes into play.
A Prime Soul is a soul powerful enough to manifest physically outside of a body. The angels, knowing the sheer power of a Prime Soul, decided to imprison Minos' soul within a prison of flesh, locked deep within his own corpse. Thus, Minos' soul was forced to watch as everything he had worked for was destroyed.
EDIT: Also, his Prime Soul appearance is the most raw characteristics of his being. He is faceless, for he did not rule for wealth or power. The crown fused to his head resembles a city, such as the one he helped build. The large heart clearly visible beneath his "skin" represents his kindness and compassion for others. The snakes, though, are a bit more connected to the mythology of Minos.

There is two reasons for V1 being stronger than the other machines and even Minos, one of them being represented in gameplay in the ability to heal instantly, and other being V1 being made for Frontline warfare unlike the other machines which is represented in how it's controlled by the player. Also, his only line in the entire game and where in the story it is reinforces my belief that V1 isn't like V2 like most people portray it as.

I really admire how well you picked up on Minos's character when ORDER started to play.
In summary : Minos was originally the judge of hell, who signed up souls to where they belonged in the 9 layers.
When a soul manifests in hell, their body is determined by the image they left when they were alive.
The more people remember you the larger and more powerful your body becomes in hell, and Minos was the largest sinner to ever manifest in hell.
But Minos was incredible conflicted with the punishment imposed on the Citizens of the Lust layer.
He believed that eternal punishment was too hard of a punishment for someone whos only crime was love.
At one point in time, because of a larger event, heaven lost control of hell and the sinners were left to their own devices.
Minos ceized the oppertunity and erected a massive sprawling metropolis where people would live free and in peace.
He was beloved among the people for his compassion and justice he lead his people with, until heaven regained control.
Archangel Gabriel descended into hell on command of the angelic council, because they saw the sinners not paying their penance as a Insurrection against them.
Minos believed in peace and wanted to negotiate with the angel, but Gabriel struck him down before he could utter a single world, his waining pained cries only overshadowed by Gabriels proclomation of justice.
And once he died, Gabriel animated his corpse and forced it to wreak havoc on the city he build, while his soul was imprisoned inside a Flesh Prison inside his body, so he would watch as he destroyed the city he built and kill the people he protected.
When we find Minos it is after we destroyed his prison, having lost everything the only thing he desires is to exact revenge upon those that wronged him, but he fails even that once we kill him.
This is how he dies, apologizing to his people for not being the king they deserved.

Can we just appreciate how strong Gabriel is though? I mean, he took down Minos - with the wording seeming to suggest - instantly. Some in lore explanation for the monologue. Gabriel, an archangel was sent to destroy Minos’ kingdom because it went against the “will of God.” As we learn later in the game, God really isn’t in the picture so Gabriel killed Minos and slaughtered his kingdom, turning it into basically a hellscape for no damn reason. As for the crimes, machines run on blood, and basically had to genocide the human race to survive. With humanity dead, the machines raided hell for more blood. I really do hope you play the game!

Something interesting about the section at 11:19 is that it's actually a leitmotif! For context, this game takes place in hell as interpreted by Dante (and then by the game's creator), and Minos (who has ORDER as his battle theme) was once the ruler of the layer of Lust. The melody here is from the theme for one of Lust's stages, and is called "Requiem" (no relation to that one other obscure song :P).

I find your reading of _Chaos_ as particularly interesting because _Chaos_ plays before the player even sees Minos; at this point, the player is fighting the Flesh Prison. However, the brutal rage definitely lines up with some aspects of Minos; the reason he fights you is because the player's character had a hand in the destruction of humanity, and Minos is also tortured by his inability to protect not only the people he ruled over in life, but the people he ruled over while in Hell as well.
EDIT: Also, it's always a joy to see someone enjoying this game's content for the first time, whether it's the OST or the gameplay itself.

The motif at 11:19 really hits hard because it's a motif you hear in the level 2-2, in the song "Requiem", and in that level you traverse an abandoned city in the layer of Lust. To avoid having to type up a ridiculously long summary of who Minos is, here's a snippet from the game itself, taken from the lore entry for Minos Prime:
"A prime soul is an incredibly rare occurrence in which a soul amasses so much power that it no longer requires a Husk as a vessel to manifest physically.
As manifestations of pure will, prime souls are incredibly powerful, to the point that even the prideful angels see them as a threat and will use any means necessary to stop them from forming.
King Minos felt that eternal suffering was an unfair and unreasonable punishment for those whose only sin was loving another. After the Disappearance of God, as angels were lost and Heaven was in chaos, Minos began his efforts to reform the Lust layer.
The Lust renaissance was prosperous, as King Minos guided its inhabitants to come together and build a new civilization. The combined efforts of the countless who had been damned to the second layer bore great results as the grand city of Lust grew and grew.
However, after the Council took control of Heaven and brought stability to it through their iron fist rule, they saw that Minos had gone against God's will by freeing sinners from the punishment that God had designed for them.
Gabriel, the brightest of the angels, was sent to kill Minos. The king, rather than fight back, tried to reason with him, but Gabriel mercilessly struck him down without listening.
As Minos' will was strong enough to attempt to stand up to Heaven's rule, the angels chose to imprison his soul in an attempt to stop it from forming into a prime soul and appointed Gabriel as the new Judge of Hell.
From the prison inside his own body, Minos helplessly watched as his soulless corpse, now controlled by parasites, tore apart everything he had worked so hard to build, cursing his own weakness for failing to protect his people, vowing to take revenge..."
When V1 (the player character) breaks Minos out, Minos realizes he has a chance to set things right. That sad motif is the desperation in Minos, it's him wanting to take revenge for failing his people and kill the ones who caused them suffering.
For a game called "big murder" it has some surprisingly emotional beats.

The leitmotif an 11:19 that everyone talks about can be seen in another track: "Requiem." In this level, you explore one of the cities that Minos built for his people to protect them. In Minos' absence, the city is dilapidated, and it's denizens killed. ORDER as a track is showing King Minos' grief more than anything.

  • @holneer

Here's some backstory for the maximum impact of the song and it's parts as it's quiet tragic:
Throught act 1 of the game you traverse the lust layer of hell. When Minos was a King and alive, he tried to bring "ORDER" and "Happiness" to the people that were sent there because he thought that eternal torture wasn't fair for those who only wanted to love each other. He built a beautiful city and brought *Order* to it and the souls. Council of Heaven, seeing the souls not receiving the punishment they expected, sent Archangel *Gabriel* to King Minos. As a fair and peaceful ruler, Minos tried to talk to Gabriel, but the latter mercilessly struck him down.
His body became a husk, just like that of others sinners in hell, but due to the amount of people that remembered and respected him, that husk was massive, as to represent his impact during his afterlife. Gabriel and the Council guided his huge mindless husk to destroy the city and it's inhabitants that he throughout his life tried his best to protect. When you play through the city levels you can hear a sad and melancholic tune, something that sounds like a weak reminder of the past greatness...
Which is the 'Order' part of this song. It's strong, energetic, lively, same song but showing how it would have been in it's *Prime* if it wasn't for angels. The face, the king, the ruler and the creator of that once beautiful city is here before you reborn anew, his soul so powerful it manifested him a body to live once more. And just like before, he is set on fixing everything, but his first and toughest obstacle is right in front of him, it's you, the player, a V1 war machine robot, one of the sentient creations that brought humanity to it's knees and destroyed it. For as long as you're alive he cannot bring salvation and justice to his people... "and thy punishment.. is death."
Throughout the fight, when he gets really hurt he starts even chastasing himself for his failures as a ruler and protector, he shouts "Weak." after dropping to 50% hp, but it's not a taunt towards you, no, he thinks himself weak for not being able to get through you. In his frustration he begins fighting his best, at that point there are no attack windows, no rest, he will do whatever he can to kill you.
But, at last, he loses the battle and in his final speech blames himself for it all, after which this new Soul-body/vessel of his gets destroyed and he dies for good.

The design for King Minos is supposed to represent how people viewed him as well as his core characteristics:
    A crown as monumental as the city he has built, forever embedded into his very soul. Shows that his title of a king was well deserved;
    A gaping hole insted of a face, represents that he was selfless and didn't put any personal gain in his rule (also looks like the giants from Dark Souls 2);
A big red heart, the only organ left on him. Symoblises his kindness and probably love for his subjects. Also might be due to the fact he was sent to the lust layer.
The snakes are probably a reference to his real life mythos counterpart. Although an ingame lore entry says he comanded two big parasites, so that are probably them, but much more dignified.
Also, the piece played at 11:20 and 15:06 are leitmotifs from a song called "Requiem", or as I like to call it "Requiem" for the city of Lust. Nice way to connect to plot points, and a reminder that Minos has suffered an absolute tragedy. The intense kicking of metal ass that happens during his fight is absolutly justified.

There’s actually a leitmotif in order: The requiem leitmotif. It is a leitmotif used in the lust layer, specifically jn the song requiem.
Minos, king of lust, was killed by the angel gabriel due to saving the lust layer and sparing the souls of the damned from torment by creating a city. In the song requiem, the leitmotif is played with a violin, to show sadness. “Our king has died and everything here is being destroyed by his corpse. We cannot do anything.”

as you descend the spiral spine staircase, the singing begins. as you reach the long section, it gets distorted; once you reach the gate, it is almost louder than the fear. but.

The saxophone combined with the low piano notes creates an atmosphere unlike what I've seen before. The song "Chaos" is actually not King Minos. It is his prison trying to keep him locked away forever and you as the player are fighting this giant floating fleshprison.

Also would like to mention that Order actually repeats a motif from various other levels. The motif first appears the track Requiem, from one of the levels in the Lust layer, but it's also used in tracks in Gluttony, because you enter that layer by going into Minos' corpse. It's for this reason that Order is one of my favorite tracks, it's great what the introduction of a brief lemotif can do.

i'm glad you have the monologue in here since it's a very good tone setter for order itself and if you do gabriel's set of songs that you'd include his as well
minos is voiced by the ever talented talented Stephan Weyte who has a vocal range ranging from the boat in pajama sam and caleb from blood
heaven pierce her is hakita's (the developer) pen name for the music of ultrakill which he have almost all been by him (there are a couple guest musicians and a handful of royalty free tracks)

  • @KOSMic-wq8yi

I might get some details wrong but to break it down a little.
King Minos in ultrakill was sent to hell with the rest of humanity after they were wiped out by the robots, things sucked in hell so King Minos tried to make things better by gathering humanity and establishing order as a just and compassionate King.
It worked for awhile because he was seemingly beloved by his people but the whole thing was stopped by the angel Gabriel who slew King Minos, sealing his soul in the flesh prison and taking his giant body and useing it as the overseer of the layer of lust.

    • @grimstruck5300
      @grimstruck5300 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

close but when Minos died god made him the judge of hell, who would listen to there sins and wrap a snake around them as many times as the layer of hell they were sent to, but after god disappeared he decided the people should not be tortured for all eternity just for being in love so he helped build the layer of lust into a city and a haven, when heaven found out they sent Gabriel to stop it. after Gabriel killed him he turned into a prime soul, a soul so powerful that even heaven couldn't kill him so they locked him up never to be released. also he's is giant because his soul is so powerful it makes his body bigger when he goes to hell.

I absolutely adore blind ost reactions with the musically literate because it’s always wild to me how much ya’ll accurately intuit regarding the narratives the songs belong to. Obviously a lot of the work comes from the creators of the music, weaving that subtext in there, but still, I love it.

The theme CHAOS is used when you're fighting the first stage of this battle, The Flesh Prison. The theme being chaotic reflects on the boss as it just throws all these crazy attacks at you.

As cruel and messy as life, and humanity as a whole, can be, Art and music and expression of any kind is so beautiful to watch. Seeing people analyse and interpret the meanings, emotions & intentions of something as simple yet deeply complex as instruments playing together is genuinely amazing and fills me with a feeling of light? (can’t really word it. apologise for the weirdly poetic ramblings, it’s 8am without sleep. Great video.)

  • @notnice-9623
    @notnice-9623 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

I believe Minos had most likely been sorrowful for his tyranny in life, causing him to take a pacifist route resulting in him leading the Lust Renaissance. And what did he get from it, when he tried to peacefully reason with Gabriel, to talk him out of fighting? A broken utopia, destroyed by godless angels desperate for order.
Prime souls are formed from willpower, fully capable of maintaining physical form without a body.
Now imagine Mino's RAGE that built up when he was interred into the Flesh Prison. As he watched the people he tried to save and the city he built be destroyed by his own parasite-ridden corpse. Rage becomes willpower, willpower becomes true power.
He's not releasing it on you, the player, but he's saving it for Heaven. You are however responsible for the destruction of humanity and must be punished.

its insane how well you matched the songs to what they're supposed to mean, you hit it on the nose with chaos and symphony, also known as spiral staircase. Your description of king minos was on the dot, he consumed all of the lust layer with his generosity, giving homes to those in need but most of all is the vengeance he has, towards gabriel, and towards the council for killing him for simply giving people homes in the layer where no one did anything wrong other than love another.

Duel and Duel(Reprise) from the ULTRAKILL OST are great songs, imo. definitely give them a listen when you get a chance! as for this one, i always felt like ORDER was more of a waltz than anything with that reoccurring tune that plays throughout the song. and with the way the fight goes, it kind of IS a waltz... a very lethal one, where only one of the two dancers will remain standing.
EDIT: the actual songs are VERSUS and DUEL(VERSUS REPRISE), my bad.

Minos was a just ruler, but he was killed by Gabriel and he turned Minos' body into a moving corpse that destroyed the city he once ruled. Minos' soul was prisoned inside flesh prison for several years, and when he comes out he wants nothing but revenge against Gabriel, who turned everything he loved to ashes. His children are actually the citizens of the Lust city, of wich he was the king. The soundtrack reflects that feeling of loss and revenge but also sadness for not being able to protect the things he loved, cursing himself for his weakness.
