Literally, you saved my life good man!! My car was totally dead with all lights on in the dashboard and standing in the middle of nowhere at 3 am! After watched your video, I could restart the car and get home! God bless you!!!
Loosen the tailight and put silicone seal on the top edge all the way across where the water runs down the channel. You can remove the red cover over the positive terminal. It's not needed. I had 3 inches of water in my battery compartment and some in my spare tire well. Disconnecting the smaller two positive battery wires may mess up the gas guage for awhile. Sometimes the new battery has a smaller diameter positive terminal and you have to file it so it will clamp tighter. Take the big tray out before installing the triangle cover. I own 3 Prii - I have seen it all.
Another common problem with older Prius cars is the 12 volt power supply to the dash display. Computers need stable DC voltage. There are electrolytic capacitors in the dash display circuit board. They can fail after 5 or so years.. Replace the caps, (solder in new ones). The dash display sometimes goes completely out (dark) or fluctuates in brightness due to bad electrolytic caps.
I have a 2009 Prius and yesterday while going for a Sunday drive, my AC started to act up. I noticed it was blowing warm air and I had the temp set to 78. I slowly lowered the temp and it finally started to blow cold air. I slowly raised the temp back up to 78 and again it started to just blow warm air. I began to lower the temp again and then I heard a noise and the red triangle of death, as you called it, came on along with the check engine light and other yellow lights. I then noticed the AC was not working at all and the cruise control stopped working too. I had to drive it to a dealership 2 counties to the south to get it repaired since the closer Toyota Dealerships were closed on Sunday. I have never had this problem before and it got fixed with a new Hybrid Water Pump and I'm guessing a gasket. I was told it overheated and needed to be replaced and it is common for the Prius to shut off the air and cruise when overheated. Fortunately I was able to drive it. I did not shut it off fearing I would not be able to start it again. After watching your video it reminded me of a video I say by a woman who said her Prius would leak water from the rear hatch and get into the 12v battery compartment and her red light of death would come on. She was going to use some black silicone to seal her hatch just outside the rubber seal where there was a way for the water to get in from rain, etc. I don't think I have that problem but I had just replaced my 4 year 12v battery that only lasted 23 months days before having this issue. I've replaced my 12v battery a total of 4 times now in 11 years. It seems like the Prius just eats batteries! The longest they last is 3 years. My garage gets hot in the summer since I live in south Florida and the door faces west. My wife has a 1995 Acura and she has only replace her battery one time. The dealership fixed my car yesterday and I'm glad it's fixed but I'm embarrassed to say how much it cost me! They did a good job with my car and checked everything out and the car drives like a new one when I left there plus it was Sunday and it's not easy to find a dealership open. I had just purchased a new tool kit to put into the car because it is getting old and I wanted to have them in case something happens. I also purchased a floating charger so I can now charge the battery slowly if it gets low. That way I won't have to jump it to get it going. I'm thinking of buying a scan tool as well so I can check the codes and see if I can fix it myself next time. I'm already to replace my four spark plugs which I bought for around $12 and a 1/4" and 3/8" Torque Wrench once I get the 150,000 miles. Sorry this went so long but as you said in your video, these cars are complex!
I have the exact same problems, starting with the AC going out then the warning lights coming on, and at the beginning I was very concerned but it went away shortly. Just today the same things started happening again, so I think I will follow in your steps and try replacing the water pump. Thanks for your comment Joseph.
Id check that valve. The triangle doesn't always mean a hybrid battery problem. Its really just a fault indicator for anything dealing with the hybrid system. just like the check engine light is the fault indicator for anything dealing with the ICE system. All the electric pumps and valves for the coolant in this car is for the hybrid electronics. except the Aux heat pump. The belt-driven water pump is for the engine alone.
There should be a Recall for all the Red Triangle of Death Issues. Obviously there are design issues with it, as so may owners have problems related to it.
Check the the aux coolant pump, I had one fail on my 05 shows an emission code. Also Red Triangle and engine light with temp indicator is usually inverter pump which I have also replaced on my 05, replaced my Hybrid Battery at 235K with a re-manufactured unit for $1k
The codes I have been getting all point to the pack except one I have gotten a few times that has to do with the coolant control valve. I actually have the part to replace it but have not done it yet. FYI, the red triangle is back, a video about that tonight...
Yea I actually had it turned off before I replaced the 12V battery. But I realized I actually sort of like the beep now as it makes me pay more attention.
My Prius 2010 check engine light comes on and off Iv changed lots of things and tried everything and it still comes on, strange thing is no faults are showing up.
If your code reader won't see or can't explain some codes, you may be able to find them defined or at least get the code numbers by doing the hold odwn the display button and turn headlinghts on and off four times thing which puts you in service menu where you can find and clear some of the codes..
Just had my lexus 2012 ct200 give the dreaded hybrid failure light. Lost power and the car stalled twice. I noticed my car heater wasn't pumping heat either into the car also. I Brought to The Mechanic to fixed the electronic water pump ($1,400) , ( not the engine thermostat) first as i read this can cause the triangle of death light. This fix the problem, so if ur heater isn't working and ur death sign comes on go get the water pump fixed first. This might be ur solution. 🎉
Check coolant levels. If coolant pump isn't working, these two items can cause red triangle to go on and off at variable intervals. There are a host of things that can cause red triangle. Since you've brought up a code concerning coolant valve control, I would look at that as causing your triangle

I have a gen 2 Prius too and getting some wonkiness with the red triangle of death, check engine, vsc lights etc. I did have the issue with water underneath the battery, it shocked me half to death when I first encountered it after getting the triangle and then no starting. Replaced the aux battery and it was good. That was maybe a year ago. Last week, got the red triangle and then no start, and it seems my aux battery is dead. Going to try jumping it and I also bought a trickle charger, I don't drive long distances usually and thinking this could be part of the issue. I drilled a hole down into the bottom of the battery well, just a temp fix until I can find and seal the leaky spot. Still like my Prius, but it's definitely a science to driving these things! Prius Chat taught me a LOT of useful info and I'm irritated, but still happy overall with the way the car drives given the price I paid for it. Hoping I can keep her going for a decent while.
It's the coolant control valve. I had the same issue with the triangle of death on my 2010. It resets after 3 cycles through. So it came on. You turned it on and off 3 times and the 3rd time was when you were filming. it is on because of the coolant system. My code is for the water pump. It causes overheating and throws a code. The water pump still works some so it can be driven as normal for a while until the coolant system failure. Water pump will fix my problem like the coolant control valve will fix yours.
Well I do agree my coolant control valve was bad, which I did replace if you look at my other Prius videos. However the hybrid battery pack without a doubt was bad as well. I also replaced the 12V battery. For the last 6-7 months everything has been great, knock on wood!
Great video thanks I agree with your finicky comment. I got the triangle when my driver door was open and I was in reverse but I shut the door and it solved it
My catalyc comverter got stolen on my 2009 prius.. I drove like that for less than 2 miles and got red triangle with exclamation point on it. When that happened car started to loose power and eventually died on me:( right now I have it at a muffler shop where they will put another catalyc converter on but car still does not turn on..when I press on power button all the lights come on like if car it's on but engine not on. Lightss, radio and power windows work . The windows are slow though so I don't know if battery it's dying
I was gonna check the 12v battery on prius diagnostic screen to make sure is not that. About a year ago I was changing my passenger mirror and after I was done car was dead no lights or nothing. So I gave it a jump and it worked fine. This time the jump is not helping
Have you fixed the problem? The red triangle turns on for me once in a while as well and a couple days ago when I was driving in the free way the car started slowing down it went from 70 to 40 on the freeway! It was very scary but I can’t afford a new car till I save money for a down payment
Replacing the pack fixed the problem. The symptoms you describe sound like what happened to me before the pack went bad. I got the pack replaced with a rebuilt one for about $800-$900
Your problem is your 12V battery in the back. The Prius has an "integrated" battery system. You said the diagnostic display read that the voltage on the battery was 11.9 or 11.5 or whatever. A GOOD/HEALTHY 12V battery will test at 12.2V-12.7V. Anything UNDER 12.2V needs to be checked and addressed. Just need a new 12V battery and you'll be fine. If the battery gets "too" low, it won't even start. You can clear the triangle "warning" by unplugging the big yellow/white plug going into the harness at the 12V battery terminal and then plugging it back in. This will allow you to start the car in a pinch and get it to a battery shop. Hope the information helps prius drivers.
How did u fix this problem? I have this problem when it rains, I know a little bit of water leaks in from somewhere but what I want to know is what gets shorted from the water? Is it a plug? A connector? Module? What is it that caddies it so I can clean it up and grease it. Thanks
@@khartronix2066 I did several things because mine ALSO happened after a heavy rain. First I addressed the water coming in and cleaned up the standing water in the back (a very common issue). Under the 12V (small) battery, there is a black rubber DRAIN PLUG. You will need to remove the 12v battery to gain access. I removed this and drained all the water and dried the area with a towel. Then I took black silicon in my caulking gun and applied it to cover the seams that are all around the hatchback area when the door is up. They are clearly visible in the CHANNEL where the hatchback door rests when closed. That sealed the back. Then I inspected all the connections looking for a short and testing power with my DMM (Digital Multi Meter). I found one (that seems to be the "common" culprit) that is on the battery side, high in the hatchback area about halfway from the hinges of the hatchback to the 12v battery. It's just above the hybrid battery pack FAN SYSTEM. It's a good-sized white connection plug. It sits in a verticle position which allows the dripping water to land directly IN the connection plug. The PINS in that connector had 1-2 that were corroded. I took the connector apart by pulling the pins/wire out AFTER pushing in the metal clip on the side of the pins with a small needle pick. I used a wire brush to clean these up really well so they could make CONTACT again. This was the short location. The pins had power, but would not transfer power through the other side of the connector. I put it all back together and the no-start condition went away because I fixed the short. All the warning lights went off and it worked again. I'm not sure what you mean by "what is it that caddies it". I hope this information helps and is just one solution of several I have seen on TH-cam. GL
@@liberty9348 what caddies it lol I meant what causes it, anyway you are 💯 right, that white plug for the fan hidden behind the panel had water on it, I cleaned up all the water and applied some silicone on the seams, it’s raining now so will wait till tomorrow to see if it’s sealed up. And thanks again for the detailed info. The bunch of wires that plug into the 12v battery (single wire plug) was corroded on mines so I cut the wire and added some new wire and crimped it, that wire causes a “no ready” fault
Yes it did. I posted a video last week about the latest and greatest. I am on my third replacement pack at this point, knock on wood, so far this one is performing well. I also replaced my 12V battery last week.
It all depends, it may drive fine for awhile, it may die in a day. You never know. When I got my first ever red triangle of death I cleared it with a code reader and drove for months before it came back.
It's more likely high internal resistance in one of the modules causing a red triangle. Install Dr. Prius on your smartphone and buy a bluetooth scanner and you'll be able to monitor voltage and IR on all the modules.
Buy a bluetooth scanner on Amazon and put Dr. Prius on your smartphone to read the scanner and you'll be able to monitor in real time the voltage and internal resistance of all the modules.
My 2004 has the triangle and the check engine light but everything is running fine like there's no issues anywhere it's still pretty much normal. Only 132000 MI does anyone know what it could be.
In another video I described how I initially had a red triangle error that I cleared with my code reader. The car continued to run fine for almost six months. You need to hook a code reader up to your car and see what problem is being reported.
My daughter just called me with that same issue on the same car as yours. Did you resolve it? I am wondering if it is water as in this video: th-cam.com/video/AUpB974RH20/w-d-xo.html

Poor design by Toyota. Thousands having Red Triangle issues and Toyota should have had a recall by now. No way things should be that complicated just because a battery gets old and weak. Old battery out, new battery in, done. That should be it. Toyota complicates the uncomplicated with many of their dumb ideas.
My experience with the Prius has been overall it is very reliable, I have almost 225,000 miles on mine now. However if something does need to be repaired it generally is a big pain in the ass to do so.

Yes it did. I posted a video last week about the latest and greatest. I am on my third replacement pack at this point, knock on wood, so far this one is performing well. I also replaced my 12V battery last week.
Yeah man, your hybrid battery is on the way out.
Wait till you see my new video, taking matters into my own hands.
@@Duf when does it come out?
Hopefully by the end of this weekend. In the middle of the fun now.
Water in the 12v battery compartment? Same as mine your the second video I've seen mine had a dent like a tree fell on it silicone is your friend
No water
Ours went away on its own but came back approx. 500 miles later. Still trying to figure out what is causing it.
You should get your hybrid battery checked out. That may be the issue.
I have a similar problem in 2005 prius, and it happens over long weekend, can i drive my car ?
It all depends, it may drive fine for awhile, it may die in a day. You never know. When I got my first ever red triangle of death I cleared it with a code reader and drove for months before it came back.
It's more likely high internal resistance in one of the modules causing a red triangle. Install Dr. Prius on your smartphone and buy a bluetooth scanner and you'll be able to monitor voltage and IR on all the modules.
Just had brake actuator replaced 2009 prius and the heater control valve
Driving home from shop red triangle with temp gauge. Also had 12 volt battery replaced. Car won’t go into engine only mode. Fans are running.
What's the cause of red triangle of death and how is it fixed?
It can be caused by a number of things but the most common thing is a failure in the main battery pack.
Buy a bluetooth scanner on Amazon and put Dr. Prius on your smartphone to read the scanner and you'll be able to monitor in real time the voltage and internal resistance of all the modules.
Did your car get the recall for the inverter water pump replacement?
Perhaps the original owner got that recall, I did not.
Dufisthenics check the VIN with Toyota USA. I called Toyota USA. Mine was actually done in 2013, but needs to be done again.
Will they cover it a second time?
Dufisthenics my understanding is No
Go to PriusChat, search member, USBseawolf2000. He has an excellent template for PIDS to read together with the Torque App (android).
18:15 "what's on her mind" You still F*king with this thing?
I had a similar problem after my battery replacement. Thanks for this. I will try reseating that connector.
Hope it helps
Can you try disconect the batery
That will clear it temporarily.
Hi what code reader can i use for my 2006 Prius
Anyone would work but here is a decent one on Amazon - amzn.to/2RgOwuA
Go to Scotty Kilmer channel, he has a "blu driver" reader he likes. I bought a well reviewed bluetooth reader on Amazon.
Get the blu driver and then install on your Android phone the "Torque Pro" app that will tell you the bad modules.
Torque Pro won't tell you Internal Resistance of each module. Dr. Prius will. It's what the Pros use.
@@Duf I had someone do that and reset the car but the triangle came back in about a mile. But cars still running fine
@@Duf cooling pumps working and I didn't notice any water on the battery in the back right of the car.
My daughter just called me with that same issue on the same car as yours. Did you resolve it? I am wondering if it is water as in this video: th-cam.com/video/AUpB974RH20/w-d-xo.html
My question is the car still running with the red triangle and check engine light on
Love Your Prius Videos?
Bob Vandivort here we have an 08 Touring Prius with 2 Hymotion Batteries that gives us 50:80mpg
All of us have similar exciting/discovery moments with our Beloved Prius’
The Hatch should have had a Rubber Seal on the Hatch/Window side OK
The water is Rolling down from Rain/ Car Wash or melting Snow!
Prius did a real Bad Body Connection on the Hatch to Roof of the Car ! Water ever they used for Sealer was not the Best!
The Leak finds a way to the Lowest Point an in our Prius that’s the Passenger Side Rear Battery Compartment. It sits there till enough water reaches the Water Drain Plug! My fix Take the Battery out an Keep an re hab it!
We keep 3 -12 volts in our Prius!
Our Prius Cars have built in volt steelers Every time the Pump comes on Starting stoping If you get to close to the Car an our keys are it comes on then all those little lights eat volts the Fan in the Hybrid Battery Pack But wait maybe it’s the Pump for the Engine
If ya really want some fun Change the Anti Freeze!
Two water overflow Storage
Two Drain Plugs you’d may be in the Middle of the Engine Block it’s Aluminum don’t strip out
Did I mention take part of the Front end apart or Pull the Head Light
I had the dealer do it only one time He did the Head Light an Pulled the Front of the Fender open ( Wish I would of know that ) me 3 hrs the Dealer 15 minutes
The Computer Black Box can also reset the Hybrid Battery its next to the 12 volt Battery ya know where the Floor doesn’t want to do be seated the 1st /5th times
Thanks

So it’s the water dripping on the battery connections?
I could get ziro information from this video
That is very unfortunate
Battery should be more than 12,3V to be OK. 11,7V with AC and lights on is to low.
Yea I knew it was borderline. I guess a new 12V battery video will be coming up...
Btw . Did you have problems with the Ioniq ? I just experience "check engine" (no red triangle :D ) after one year of use. P0365 and P0340. Service change 2 faulty sensors. Hope you don't face the same problem.
Other than the day one problem we had with a relay that was not installed correctly the Ioniq has been totally fine.
What relay did you installed?
Dammit, I know I shouldn't have bought an old Prius. In the future, I'll stick with normal combustion cars.
I got 235k miles out of mine
@@Duf the one I bought is at 218K miles. electric cars are a bitch.
My $60 scanner will clear the Red Triangle but not ABS codes. AUTEL AL519.
I got all these crappy water leaks in the back after a rear-end collision. I've had used so much silicone on this thing Anyone watching me from the back will think I'm driving a large dildo. I have to say I've never seen a car with so many unwelded seams lol.
Yea others have mentioned the rear trunk leak issue. Luckily mine was dry back there.
I'm 70 and it's hard for me to remember when I had body hair. You'll look better at the gym without body hair.
What just happened here?
Wrong plug buddy it's the on the bottom of the 12v it's a drain plug to get the water out
No water is in there?
our we seeing a shrink yet
I should be
In french for me
Interesting
Poor design by Toyota. Thousands having Red Triangle issues and Toyota should have had a recall by now. No way things should be that complicated just because a battery gets old and weak. Old battery out, new battery in, done. That should be it. Toyota complicates the uncomplicated with many of their dumb ideas.
My experience with the Prius has been overall it is very reliable, I have almost 225,000 miles on mine now. However if something does need to be repaired it generally is a big pain in the ass to do so.
Battery low
Maybe....
Get rid of that prius bat man
Done
First of all u have no idea that how make a video
You are right!
