I used to take tin food 50 odd years ago, before dried food was perfected to what it is to day, now I seldom take tin food. I never ever took the 2 min noodle stuff, full of MSG and never filling. Now days when I go into the mountains I take pre-prepared food of my own making, even to the point of filled rolls that can last up to 5 days and still taste fresh(ish). Ciabatta rolls filled with cheese, sweet pickle and yeast flakes. These should be pre pared without touching the food and then wrapped (tightly) in several layers of foil. By observing hygiene no mold will appear. This has always been my preferred way. I take steaks, frozen solid and wrapped in foil. these will last 2 days before I have to cook them. Don't forget this is for the mountains of NZ where you can go for weeks without seeing a soul. You adapt your needs to your (own) environment . Another thing that we can do here ( and I always do) is to carry in a container full of food and bury it !! This gives you a safety net and enables you to stay longer or if a storm blows in .This of course is all pre-planned . This is where tin food comes into its own again. On the subject of cheap tent Vs expensive tent I recently purchased a tent from well respected company . I put it up in the garden and left it for 4 days ( this is how I test most of my gear). There were no strong winds, but 2 days of rain, the tent came apart at the seams. It has been replaced. A cautionary warning there, Always test your gear before using in in the field. Well, that's my 2 penny worth. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀
I'm from that neck of the woods and from your previous recommendations I've started camping at Hainworth when I'm down visiting family, beats my gran's spare room! Trying to be the person who just gets out there and does it thanks to your previous vids, its still great to see a down to earth bloke covering accessible kit, cheers again!
Nice honest review Dan, totally agree with your thinking as you would probably upgrade the sleeping mat and pillow first and then when the weather gets colder you would upgrade the tent and sleeping bag (though a bag liner would make a difference for cooler nights). The stove and pots are fine for simple 'cooking'. I still want to see you trying to get the tent back into it's bag though, so was disappointed that you didn't film that 😂
My favorite piece of kit for this camp was the swedish fire torch. It made for a great little table and then an easy, cozy short term fire. Brilliant purchase for a quick camp.
Our 1st tent was a family tent as there were 5 of us, we bought the gear and tried it all out in the back garden, next to the pond, The 3rd day, I set a big fan on it and the water sprinklers, I'm glad we did. We experienced a light rain storm and realized it didn't really hold up, But it was definitely great in the garden, we had a brilliant time, have added a lot of gear, and our camping is in the garden 😊

When tent camp, my go-to tent is my 20 yr. old Ozark Trail tent I bought from Walmart for around $30. To this day I have yet to find a compelling reason for the purchase of some of these $200+ tents. I believe a good tarp-over-tent combo will up the game for any tent, even a cheap big box store tent. If I'm solo camping I actually prefer a hammock & tarp setup in rough terrain or foul weather.
Took my son camping lots of times when he was little. Gelert 3 man, inner first (with pole ring/pins) and a Decathlon 4 man pop-up. Still have both, still all fine..don't think he'd go with me now though as he's 26! We used to have sweet and sour pot noodles, and cook full English on a Campingaz Party Grill. Happy days 🥰 Love your down to earth-no-nonsense videos - thank you!
As someone who has camped for a good amount of my life, I have to say you are doing a great job. I started camping 40 + years ago in the days when there was little choice out there. I think that any one interested in say the Duke of Edinburgh Award or back packing in general will gain a wealth of knowledge. Keep up the good work .
Great video! The world needs more people like you who encourage others who want to take that step to camping but haven’t yet because of a tight budget. There’s no shame in having budget gear! There’s always a bargain to be had second hand and also army surplus stuff is great value. Keeping it down to Earth and real is where it’s at. I’ve un-subbed some TH-camers who have become ££££ kit snobs and influencers, that stuff gets on my tits.
I was that person last night! Hammock camped, little fire into which half my marinated steak fell 😱. Not a sound in the woodland until it went dark. Just got to get used to it. I think I slept but not sure. Thanks for your vids it gave me the confidence to try camping again after so many years. Stay safe buddy atb 👍🦊
I bought one of those tents just to use for staying at motocross tracks, got the self inflating matt as well, I did buy a better sleeping bag from go outdoors but, all in all, it all works just fine. It's rained a few times and held up well. The tent says 1 man but, not really. But we'll and truly worth it 👌
the flashing light option is known as emergency/distress light 😇 Yes: burgers, noodles and don't forget the pancakes! The thing with the inflatable stuff is that you're tempted to fully blow it up but that doesn't mean it will be the most comfortable way🤣 I think it's great that you show people a way to start camping without spending extreme amounts of money. It's exactly as how you say... slowly upgrade certain items as you discover your likes and needs. 👍🏻👍🏿✅ tips: *put the inflatable pillow in your fleecejacket to make it comfortable; *put a piece of plastic underneath your inner tent to protect the seal, keep it clean and stay dry incase of rain; *to prevent the sliding between the matras and the sleepingbag and to trap some more bodyheat, make a easy cover that slides over the top and bottom of the matras out of a material you prefer. 💞
My first tent was £15 from Netto, yes Netto, it last 2 nights. It was a learning curve. From there I moved up to better superior quality one. We all got to start of somewhere
Over the years I’ve camped in some cheaper tents. Some surprised me while others were worse than I thought they would be. But I was always prepared for bad weather. I always had a decent tarp. Like everything being prepared is the key, cheap gear or expensive gear. Thanks for sharing. Take care and stay safe.
Depending on the time of year and where I was I often liked tinned Irish Stew and some french bread to eat, makes a filling meal, I did go OTT for my coffee though and used a stove top Mocha pot and fresh ground coffee, which I let down a bit with boiling water. I am thinking of getting back to camping and getting a 2 man compact tent like the Vango Banshee 2.
Hello English Woodsman another good Video. I really enjoy these videos on equipment etc you are spot on when you say its all about getting out there. Telling people like you do that you don’t have to take a bank loan out to get some gear that will do you to get started if you don’t like camping then you haven’t lost a lot of money. So go out and try it Anyhow all the best Cheers. B. K
Good on yer for showing you can get started camping on a budget with basic gear. It’s a state of mind coz you can sleep in a bin bag and have fun as a kid. As an adult we expect a little more comfort but you can still enjoy the process.
27 years ago our older 3 children wanted to go camping so we were shopping one day and child 4 said he’d found a tent in our Asda was it a good price £100 yes it was so that weekend mum dad 5 children and 2 dogs set off Lots of tents later everyone still camps in various ways 💕💕🐾🐾
I've got a couple of cheap Eurohike tents....cheap and good enough for a night out. Glad you didn't waste budget on a multi tool - good teeth, that's all you need. This will inspire viewers to get started camping.....Good stuff!
Great video. I think it's the original single skin pop up tents that are bd for condensation. I slept in one one on a charity walk and made the mistake of closing the door completely
That’s good. Haven’t seen cheap pop up tents with an inner! I’ve go crazy in the past buying kit (it’s addictive!) but have thinned out my gear and go without the unnecessary mod cons now. Feel much better
Weather aside - a cheap tent will keep the midges and ticks off you - which could easily put any first time camper off for life! I use a £12 tent when no (absolutely no) rain forecast (less than 1kg) to deal with ticks...hate em. 👍
You could use a cheap pop up tent eg like this and if it was going to be wet, pitch a tarp over it to shed the water so it wouldn't matter too much if it wasn't totally waterproof. That might be an idea to make the cheaper gear practical in more extreme weather.
I still take pot noodle - chicken and mushroom rocks That tent would be fantastic instead of a tarp - take the inner out and put your bivvy bag in - quick and simple Love your reviews
I love camping but I did what you say here many years ago. I got an Argos camping bundle and it was brilliant. I have since upgraded...just a little at a time. Unfortunately health now stops adventures for me so enjoy it while you can
Love the low budget videos I have aldi gear that has lasted plenty of trips. Cheap tents need a cheap tarp to give you insurance re rain. Folks drop more than £75 for a hotel.
I can't stand pot noodles so I make my own. Thin egg noodles, chopped spring onion, half a chicken stock cube, light soy sauce. Add boiling water and leave to stand for five to ten minutes. Job done. I usually do this as a light lunch in the cooler months
never taken a pot noodle , but have taken the little packs of noodles from aldi , just drop in boiling water .. brilliant video and great content , i love going to hainworth been a few times !
I absolutely love watching your channel, I'm a very experienced camper, you know with the best of the best gear.. But I have often bought stuff from Audi's in Aus and have a couple of things that I still use when car camping. 😳 lol Anyways we all started somewhere.. keep up what your doing and I will keep on watching your great videos.. 👍
Hi mate, recently started watching again after a really busy year, so good to be back into a routine of watching you, I watch a video every night whilst cooking and before bed, so glad to see your still doing well!
Sausages, baked beans but forgot the bloody can opener and lotssss of beer 😝 can't remember much more other than the tent getting flooded and sleep in the passenger seat in the car... Best memories EVER 💓
Good vid Dan. I used a Quechua one of those pop ups at Loch Lomond when it poured down and never leaked and I think I only paid £30 for it, so some cheap stuff can be ok. My £8 Chinese stove just died after 3 years and about 30 camping trips. One of the most comfortable airbeds I have bought was only £16 off eBay and I do have a couple over £50 not as good. I used a cheap cook set for 3 years and just upgraded to a Ridge Monkey which I do like. The good thing about camping is everyone can do it not like some other pursuits which can cost a fortune to take part.
I use a poly cotton f1 tent with fly or a Dutch army tent usually. Vango xl sleeping bag and inflatable mat. And a selection of cheap burners etc. Nothing fancy. Pot noodles???? Yeah of course. But venison burgers and sausages are ace for camping
Amazing video as usual , I really enjoyed, keep these types of videos coming , your videos always make my day , thanks very much, I love the positive vibes, keep them coming !!
Great videos man ,,good for the young to see what's involved and the adventures to come ,,and learn ,as they can build up stuff either old cloths ,n things or ideas for birthdays n Xmas, pressie, ,
I think if memory serves me correct my first few camp out 30 plus years ago I had some pot noodles and a packet of smash some corned beef. then progressed to burgers and bacon. With the problem of condensation in all tents I tend to use moisture absorbers they help quite a bit.
Aldi have brilliant stuff, I have a shed full of their tools, and camping gear, nothing wrong with it, I let my grandkids use the tents and they love it, mind you half way through the night they are wanting to get into our tent,,,I end up 8n the elcheapo tents lol
👍👍👍 A good, informative (and encouraging) share .. thanks 😊. 'Cheap Tent'. One can then upgrade to a 'cheap' tarp .. the combination thereof will see one through rougher weather conditions and give one more opportunity to further 'test the water'. As mentioned by yourself and in the comments, if not to one's liking .. then no real loss. Also, there are plenty kids out there (if not one's own) who would be more than happy 'backyard camping' with their mates. Keeps them 'off the streets', out of mischief .. mostly 😏 and close by if necessary. I personally am in favour of a good quality tarp, supplemented by a 'will do' tent when necessary .. the tent bug net being the most important bit thereof. Once again, thanks for sharing .. take care ..
I tried it firstly down my local country park and cooked spaghetti carbonara in my OEX bobcat 1, the 2nd time was steak on a community camp in Llandeilo with Mr wildwales and 20+ others, I've now got 4 tents, 2 OEX tents both one man, 1 naturehike cloud peak 2 and my latest buy I have the Terra nova pioneer 2. Great video buddy, its good to see you doing videos for newcomers, I'm still one of those and I still have loads to learn, I think Noone ever stops learning tbh. Looking forward to your next adventure 👍
OK you hooked me. Good video. That campsite looks a really great place to "dip your feet". I wonder for a future video - given how many families will struggle this year - if you'd do a budget camping for a family of 4 - just an idea.
My first time wild camping on my own, Western Australia. I set up my gear on a old pathway of some sort, the mosquitos and flies at dusk were friendly to say the least. After a bit rough cooking and burnt fingers from not being prepared I set down for a nights sleep under a sky without stars. It bucketed down and the tent leaked so I retreated to the car. After a night of heavy downpours and distant lightning I woke up to a beautiful sunrise and the wildlife was abundant. A quick ciggy on the car listening to birds etc and time to pack up. Hmmmm where's the tent? Where did that muddy River come from? The old path I had set up camp on WAS a dry sandy riverbed. Not any more it was a tent swallowing mass of water flowing. Everything I left behind when retreating to the car was gone. Lesson learnt.
We are just now getting aldis in the part of the states that I live in. I hope our looks like yours one day. Going stealth camping this coming week!!!! Love your content
@@englishwoodsman ours doesn’t have a lot of camping equipment or household items. One lil row of stuff. But it just opened here last month. Any tips for my first time stealth camping along a river?
Mate I have the same stove/cookset I bought it 3 years ago for £15 and its still going strong, it’s the only thing I have. Bought that I have never replaced or upgraded and it comes on every single camp
Pot noodles every campers had them no doubt lol.as for budget gear yes you can use it just pick the location and conditions at the end of the day it's about working out if you are going to enjoy it or not and you won't know till you try it.just check it out in the garden 1st I'd say
Never eaten pot noodle camping or at home as don't really like them . When camping in group used to do stews etc over firepits and when by myself used little army hexi stove for canned spaghetti, soups and the burgers you mentioned
Superb Dan if it meant that much to the grumpy drawers that has the silly comments then you can also buy a tarp for a few quid from Aldi and throw it over the pop make it water tight. All the very best pal 👍🏻🏴👍🏻🏴👍🏻🏴
I think the same budget but looking for second hand gear would be good using ebay, gumtree, Facebook market place things like that and do a comparison in the quality of the gear. Also might be worth noting that if you could borrow gear for your first couple of times, would save you money in the long run either by not buying any gear at all if you don't like it or buying gear that will get quickly replaced by better stuff.
One thing I still wouldn't skimp on too much if you're just testing to see if you like camping is the sleeping bag and pillow as if some people don't get a good nights kip, they might not think camping is for them. However, you can get some great, comfy and warm sleeping bags for under £15 and pillows for a few quid. Great advice about making sure the weather is gonna be fair, especially with cheaper tents as new comers to camping shouldn't really be braving the elements too much til they've got more experience and of course better tents by then :D Great video and shows just what you CAN do, even on a budget
Great videos like this Dan, another good tip is trawl the net in the winter out season for camping gear always loads of bargains. I have loads of cheaper stuff long since replaced by more expensive gear that still in use, for example my gas burner is at least 7 years old and sill going strong, my mate had it off me.
I watched the previous video when you bought the gear & then this one straight after......I was so looking forward to seeing you packing the tent away since you said you'd never used one yet! 😂 I got a cheap 3 man version from Decathlon 11yrs ago when he was 13 for us to use at Rock/Metal festivals as well as normal camping & it lasted 6-7yrs, no issues with it other than learning the knack of packing it away! 😂
Aldi did a double hammock last year for around 20 squid, with hanging straps, carabiners, British army basha around 20-25 Plus your sleeping bag etc, well away, haven't tried the hammock yet
Excellent mate! Nothing wrong with doing it on the cheap! I’ve been doing this kind of thing for around thirty years now and I still use budget friendly stuff! And yep can’t beat a pot noodle every so often lol… you got some good basic kit there brother. Nice one mate 👍🏽👍🏽😎
Cheap gear can work, I've learned that if you spray the tent and rain fly down using 2 too 3 cans of silicone, it will not leak. (short of needle holes in the fabric) I own 1 relatively expensive tent, and a cheap 4 man tent (actually 2 comfortably with a little gear inside) and after treating it,it works as good a the more expensive tent
Great vid,,I think I will be getting one those tents, for winter, in my living room, as probably the only way to keep warm at night, with the price of gas and electricity, will be out of my reach, keep up your good works,,,P.S. you should have tried the cheap tins, always found camping to be lot better with booze lol,.

Good on yer for showing you can get started camping on a budget with basic gear. It’s a state of mind coz you can sleep in a bin bag and have fun as a kid. As an adult we expect a little more comfort but you can still enjoy the process.
27 years ago our older 3 children wanted to go camping so we were shopping one day and child 4 said he’d found a tent in our Asda was it a good price £100 yes it was so that weekend mum dad 5 children and 2 dogs set off
Lots of tents later everyone still camps in various ways 💕💕🐾🐾
All great members 👍
That soup looks lovely, I have never tried that with my stove because I had assumed the soup would burn. Thanks👍 good video
Cracking video Mate. I still often take pot noodle , burgers , sausage etc and occasionally a dents fresh meal .
Great idea. Like wearing several layers.
fabsil is your friend
I still take pot noodle - chicken and mushroom rocks
That tent would be fantastic instead of a tarp - take the inner out and put your bivvy bag in - quick and simple
Love your reviews
To be out in the Woods / Forests , is my idea of A Wonderful time ! no matter the weather , Be Well my Friend .👍
100% Bob! Can’t beat it
100 % mate
I love camping but I did what you say here many years ago. I got an Argos camping bundle and it was brilliant. I have since upgraded...just a little at a time. Unfortunately health now stops adventures for me so enjoy it while you can
Love the low budget videos
I have aldi gear that has lasted plenty of trips.
I’ve been camping many years and I always take a chicken and mushroom pot noodle with me, great after a pint 😊
Pot noodle sandwiches are king, quick simple and filling,Kids love em !! or diy dehydrated spag bol ☺
Pot noodle oh yes beef and tomato and chicken and mushroom but don’t also forget about the Irish stew tins as well as the soups 😉
never taken a pot noodle , but have taken the little packs of noodles from aldi , just drop in boiling water .. brilliant video and great content , i love going to hainworth been a few times !
never eaten a pot noodle in my life. pasta , sauce and smoked sausage is my go to.
Yes. Anything cold like sausage rolls, or curry’s chillis
Great vid Dan, cheers
Hi mate, recently started watching again after a really busy year, so good to be back into a routine of watching you, I watch a video every night whilst cooking and before bed, so glad to see your still doing well!
Dude I do the same mate 👊🏻👍🏻
@@h3ntaihunt3r I’ve got 2 young kids so it’s an escape when I’m in the kitchen cooking with this on next to me
Thankyou mate 👍
👍👍👍
Thankyou for finding the time to watch me when you have young kids
Super. Love the logs.
Absolutely love the spirit of this video.
Sausages, baked beans but forgot the bloody can opener and lotssss of beer 😝 can't remember much more other than the tent getting flooded and sleep in the passenger seat in the car... Best memories EVER 💓
It's all about making them memory 👍👍
@@englishwoodsman loved your video and your humbleness. Especially your words of wisdom and encouragement at the end, spot on 🙌👌🌟 Cat OZ 🇦🇺
You cannot beat an all-day breakfast in a tin. Great little series you are doing for people "thinking" about camping
never been camping in my life, would love too.
Just goes to prove that you don't need expensive equipment for starting out camping 👌
Nope your 100% right
I use a poly cotton f1 tent with fly or a Dutch army tent usually. Vango xl sleeping bag and inflatable mat. And a selection of cheap burners etc. Nothing fancy. Pot noodles???? Yeah of course. But venison burgers and sausages are ace for camping
Cracking video Dan good honest information great help for people starting out and the rest of the crew
Amazing video as usual , I really enjoyed, keep these types of videos coming , your videos always make my day , thanks very much, I love the positive vibes, keep them coming !!
Great videos man ,,good for the young to see what's involved and the adventures to come ,,and learn ,as they can build up stuff either old cloths ,n things or ideas for birthdays n Xmas, pressie, ,
Planning family camping trip in September one week. In the Sierra mountains I'm really excited.
I think if memory serves me correct my first few camp out 30 plus years ago I had some pot noodles and a packet of smash some corned beef. then progressed to burgers and bacon. With the problem of condensation in all tents I tend to use moisture absorbers they help quite a bit.
Yep and new people to wild camping are still doing it mate something never changed
@@englishwoodsman Nothing wrong with a pot noodle now and again,
@@englishwoodsman Have you seen the Slumit Gobi 3 tent. Interesting looking tent, easy set up
Great video. We all needed help when we started. I know I did.
I have that stove and cook set. And Yes I did have a pot noodle on my first wildcamp! great video! Thank you.
Brilliant Dan, loved every minute of your video, well done, great
We are just now getting aldis in the part of the states that I live in. I hope our looks like yours one day. Going stealth camping this coming week!!!! Love your content
Hi all the aldi stores are the same over in UK so I think your should be the same
@@englishwoodsman ours doesn’t have a lot of camping equipment or household items.
I love this stove now now it's brilliant
That's all in anther video mate . Cheap tent winter camping
Great advice about making sure the weather is gonna be fair, especially with cheaper tents as new comers to camping shouldn't really be braving the elements too much til they've got more experience and of course better tents by then :D Great video and shows just what you CAN do, even on a budget
yep pot noodles chicken and mush defo also spam a firm favourite
POT NOODLES ARE THE COOLEST FOOD SINCE CAMPING STARTED MATE!
Great videos like this Dan, another good tip is trawl the net in the winter out season for camping gear always loads of bargains. I have loads of cheaper stuff long since replaced by more expensive gear that still in use, for example my gas burner is at least 7 years old and sill going strong, my mate had it off me.
Great video there are always plenty of bargains on ebay/market place. Like you said get out and enjoy the outdoors
I watched the previous video when you bought the gear & then this one straight after......I was so looking forward to seeing you packing the tent away since you said you'd never used one yet! 😂
I got a cheap 3 man version from Decathlon 11yrs ago when he was 13 for us to use at Rock/Metal festivals as well as normal camping & it lasted 6-7yrs, no issues with it other than learning the knack of packing it away! 😂
I think your awesome...showing people that it can be done on a low budget thank you.😎
No, never had a pot noodle, when i first started backpacking, in the early 80's, vesta meals were my go to, easy carry grub.
I should watch this first 😂 went out spent £200+ on camping gear and not been camping since was a teenager.
Aldi did a double hammock last year for around 20 squid, with hanging straps, carabiners, British army basha around 20-25
Plus your sleeping bag etc, well away, haven't tried the hammock yet
