I was expecting Maud to say she located the cannon by sniffing out the mineral components of the gunpowder.

      @oscarstainton 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

+Raziel312 I would have preferred that at least ten times more than what we got with "Maud Sense", that just didn't fly with me.

+Oscar Stainton I think she just didn't bother to explain all the detals 'cause she had more pressing things to do. Like pressing the goldie to give up the cannon.

You forgot to mention the Smarty Pants doll along with the Twi-cane and shark. Also the many other background pony references there were in this episode. It appears that season 6 is really upping the quality and quantity of the background pony designs, as if they're aware that the bronies will breathe life into these new characters like they did with ones in the past!

Honestly, I loved this episode. Not only does Maud have a "Maud sense", you also notice a couple of mannerisms that actually do show a family resemblance. To be specific, there were a couple of times when a pony would turn away to walk away from Maud, but then there she was, magically transported, like what Pinkie would do.
My favorite interactions have to do with Maud's staring. Her expression doesn't change, yet it seems to invoke so much emotion from others. Oh, and Maud Pie winking...if you didn't know it was intentional, you could confuse it with having a twitch or something in her eye.

Odd as it is I love how LITTLE there is to this episode. It feels like MLP has been building the stakes up and up and up over the seasons and it's sometimes nice to have just a sweet story with nothing really major at stake. Also I related to Pinkie Pie which... is WEIRD. But my brother makes a lot more money than I do and I'm always a little embarrassed at Christmas when he gets me a big extravagant gift and mine for him is very modest. But I spend days and weeks agonizing over what I think he would like, and that is the point of a gift really, it's a material piece of evidence that you were thinking of the other person. And I have to remind myself every christmas of that, and that it doesn't matter if my means are modest, the thought is far more important. As a writer I knew that the party cannon would be significant by the second time she used it, because otherwise there wasn't a reason to include it. But even knowing it would play a part I gasped when Pinkie gave it up and felt bad for her. It shows the power of the writing that even something you kinda see coming can still make you be like noooo don't do it! Even though as an adult viewer you KNOW she's going to get the cannon back. Did anypony else notice Maud left Boulder in Central Park? (Central Prance?) We never see her pick him back up... headcannon!

For me it was great for character building. Before Pinkie was kind of just the comic relief character that couldn't hold her own episode. There is a video "Who is the best pony" that addresses this. This was mainly a pinkie episode with a little support from Rarity. And I thought it gave her a lot of depth when she said giving up her cannon was worth the present for her sister. I thought that when she was visibly upset but then put on a smile- you know the scene- it was amazing. It may not have been the best episode but it is certainly a crucial link for the series :)

I loved it when Rarity did her Pinkie Pie impression. It was really funny and adorable. I'm sure Magpiepony enjoyed watching that to, since her audio drama series Princess Trixie Sparkle has Pinkie and Rarity have switched minds, and Pinkie still does her shenanigans in Rarity's body! That's what it reminded me of when I first saw that scene LOL! :-)

Now I can't help but think that Rarity has a secret talent of doing impressions of other ponies like her friends. One of my favorite moments with her was when Pinkie was acting sad and she said 'I want to help you, but I cannot help unless you tell me what's bothering you.' I think I see Rarity as Team Mom when Applejack or Twilight aren't around

Not bad. It was half of the tale of "Gift of the Magi," even the title of the episode hints at it. It is different in that only Pinkie Pie had to sacrifice something dear and she got it back in the end.
Pinkie and Rarity together was interesting, and it was nice to see Maude again. Now they'll need an episode with Pinkie and Fluttershy. Those two would be about the most opposed personality and energy types in the Mane 6.

This was a nice way to help calm down from the excitement and changes in the status quo during the premiere, Dr. Wolf.
Seeing Pinkie and Rarity get back to a normal way of life after the chaos and craziness of the season premiere with having Rarity planning on opening another branch of her store in Manehattan, and Pinkie pulling a Gift of the Magi thing just to make Maud happy was nice, and I'm glad to see that Pinkie got her party cannon back, so that won't be much of a change in the status quo for now.
Can't wait to see the Crusaders in their first episode centered on them after getting their cutie marks when it comes on next week!!!

I'M EXTREMELY EXITED FOR NEXT SATURDAY!!!! Sorry I got carried away. This episode spoke to me, cause I know what its like to protect your younger sister. This definitely broke my sadness and made me gasp a lot. I wouldn't change a single second of this episode. This was my opinion, but I can see where your coming from. This just really spoke to me in a 'older sister' type of level. Awesome video doc.

I'd like to see an episode that pairs up Pie family members with main characters. I think that an interaction between the shy pie and Fluttershy might be a good character building moment, as they both get to see a bit of their nature from another perspective. If we could get a counterpart such as this for all of the main six, I would like to see that. It would be a good character building time. --------- as for Pinkie and Rarity moments, I think I would like to see a few more, but only every once in a while. I enjoyed this episode, but I think it would get stale quickly if there were many more.

That's another one down, my episode ideas for the final unused pairs are:
Twilight Sparkle & Rarity: TS reveals to Rarity being a Princess is not just about siting pretty & waiting for a Prince.
Pinkie Pie & Fluttershy: PP tries to "cure" FS's anxiety, to learn they are a part of what makes FS who she is.

Gage Bauer I don't think so, the episode features the clash between AJ's & FS's ideologies regarding the Vampire Fruit Bats, with the rest of Mane 6 in only supporting AJ's side. The song "Stop the Bats" shows this.
It's kinda like Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3 features TS & RD's interaction with the rest in supporting roles.

honestly this episode have left me suspicious that the Pie-family may have some level of chaos-magic within them.
I mean, at first we always excused Pinkie's abilities as it 'just being Pinkie'. but now we see Maud also frame-jumping and apparently defying laws of physhics and teleport around the place, as well as her having her own 'maud-sense'.
And it could also tie into their family, who have lived in, possibly, generations of traditional, near emotion-less state of living and it might just be to supress this chaos-magic to stop it from surfacing due to fear of something like Discord.

"How many of us could have guessed that the eventual solution to getting the rock pouch would mean Pinkie giving up one of her most prized possessions."
Uh... literally _anyone_ who is aware of "The Gift of the Magi", which the episode itself is named after? The shop itself being closed and Maud not giving anything up for her gift to Pinkie were deviations from the story (though it would have had to have been Boulder if it were truly following the story, so...) but besides those and the filler in-between, it was a pretty straightforward telling of the age-old source material.

  • @MegatronPrime321
    @MegatronPrime321 8 ปีที่แล้ว

I like that the writers are coming up with character pairings we've never seen in episodes before, like Rarity Investigates, The Hooffields and McColts and now this one. As for the "gift of the Magi" storyline, I like that they threw in a twist at the end where Maud gets Pinkie's party cannon back and ends up without a gift at all yet she doesn't mind, so long as Pinkie was happy. That was pretty touching.

  • @lisamariefan
    @lisamariefan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This episode was a bit weird.
Theory about Pinkie/Maud sense: Pinkie can feel the air (making her balloon cutie mark have a double meaning) and Maud can literally communicate with the earth/rock.
Maybe the Pie family each have a connection to the four classical elements? Marble would be water and limestone would be fire...

Well pinkie pie did say after maud said she had maud sense that it runs in the family. That indicates that every pie or nearly every pie has this strange sense. I assume the senses very from pony to pony seeing how cheese sandwich's sense, although not a pie, is focused more on party locations. Limestone Pie could probably sense any time someone touches holder's boulder with her Limestone sense.

I think that this episode in someway took a shot at how important your family is and how important you are in Terms of, you want to see them happy even though you have to give up something for them, but in the end, so do they. Usually, a gift is to see someone else be happy about it and especially with in the family, you really want that and so I like to think, that this episode tells you in a subtle way, how far one could, should or should not go to make someone else happy. Don't get me wrong here, there is nothing wrong with giving up something for someone else, but in the end, it comes down to the question of what is bigger: The gain of seeing that person happy or the own loss?

I thought this episode is a mixed bag, a bit exposition heavy in places and Rarity's confidence rubbed me the wrong way in the beginning, but... but the sight gags, the humor with Maud and Pinkie, and Rarity, really added a lot to the episode. It wasn't about world building or solving friendship problems... it was just about three little ponies having fun on a trip and working out their differences. Very cool ^^

Ever since I saw the Maud-sense scene I've had this weird joke involving Maud and that Leiam Neilson speech from Taken. Certainly would be fun to see what the other members of the Pie family are capable of. Hell I'd love to see what the other two are like on their swap days.
Gotta admit probably one of the funniest scenes is the one at the park where Maud tells Boulder to play Nice with the giant rock. I don't know why but it just cracks me up. Also Pinkie suggesting how/where they can ride Swans.

The episode had a Gift of the Magi feel and though I've seen so many cartoons do it over the years ( the main I remember was a Mickey and Minnie Mouse cartoon ) it was nice to see a fresh twist to it. For once both parties didn't have to give something up to be able to buy their gifts nor was it Christmas/Hearts Warming eve themed. Nice to see a every day slice of life version. It teaches kids that doing nice thing for each other is a good thing to do any time of year. :)

But according to an MLP "interview" commercial (with the characters as themselves), Pinkie claimed to have three party cannons.

this episode was like a candy coated walnut. The character interactions where kinda like the candy coating, and the rest of the episode was the dry stale walnut.
Though I am wondering about Maud's Ability to Teleport.
And you bring up a good question about the rest of the Pie Family having some degree of reality bending abilities.

I would love more of these Pinkie and Rarity episodes. I always wanted to see their personalities mix in a stand alone episode and now that I have, I want them to write more! Also Doc, Suri Polomare was in the background in this episode. Maybe hinting at a future episode once again having her appear?

To be honest, I really enjoyed this episode, but now I just want to see a staring contest between Fluttershy and Maud. That, and I do think that the other Pie siblings have their own unique senses, and I certainly hope we get to see what they are. Also, I hope they tone down Limestone a bit, as she came off kind of rude to me upon my first impression.

For me this episode was great and sweet at the same time. Both Michael and Wil Fox left a great impression on me, with them being two new writers coming into season 6. The interactions between Rarity, Pinkie and Maud were fantastic, the comedy was top notch, good continuity and the heartwarming scenes with Pinkie and Maud giving each other presents to boot. And it references the classic story Gift Of The Magi. I give it an 8/10 ^^

Dr. Wolf, in 00:00-00:14, you took the words right out of my mouth. I still think we need a proper Fluttershy/Pinkie Pie episode and if possible, a more focused Twilight/Rarity episode.
Until those days come, I consider these episodes to be the first official ones that come to mind when thinking of these Mane 6 Duo Combos:
Twilight and Rarity: Sweet and Elite (season 2)
Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie: Putting Your Hoof Down (S2) and Filli Vanilli (S4)
Almost all the other combos have at least one episode with the Duo in the spotlight.
The episode title is clearly a pun of the original tale: The Gift of Magi, so I didn't expect any surprises plot-wise.
    to answer your question(s):
Yes, I would like to see more interaction between Rarity and Pinkie Pie
Rarity's impersonation of Pinkie was the funniest part.

Raritys outfit was divine, her imitation of Pinkie was hilarious. And Maud having special powers, it goes to show that Earth Ponies have magic just like unicorns, maybe Pegasus actually cast levitation when they fly, that would explain the walking on clouds thing.

True, but "The Gift of the Magi" is my favorite short story and still gets to me, even after many readings. However in modern media this is probably the best and most unique retelling. MLP is great at taking clichés and giving them new life.

For some reason,I keep thinking of "Gift of The Magi" when I read the title. When you think about it,it kinda seems that way...
One character giving up a prized posession in order to get something for another, but the ending was different. The least I can remember from said story is at the end,the girl sold her hair to get her husband a chain, and the husband selling his watch for a comb!I couldn't help but keep making this connection throughout the episode-up until the end, that is...

I agree that we've seen this type of story before. Heck, the title itself is based off of "The Gift of the Magi", which is where these type of stories originated from. But the antics of both Pinkie and Rarity were enough to keep me entertained and I was even more surprised to realize that there was only four voice actors in this episode and only five ponies had speaking roles. Also, when Pinkie grabbed that police pony, I thought for sure she was going to jail on assault charges.

Honestly I was pretty bored throughout this episode. Being a New Yorker it was cool to see Manehattan again and they certainly got the tone of New York absolutely right! However otherwise I didn't find anything else in this episode that held my attention or was really that entertaining.
This episode and it's lesson would probably be better as a short, but it was kind of clever how the constant references to the party cannon built up the conflict later on.

I love how they decided to make an episode revolving around the classic Christmas story "The Gift of the Magi" and chose to have it focus on the Pie sisters. True there are lots of gift giving stories out there, but I think the writers had the original short story "The Gift of the Magi" in mind when they wrote this episode because of the wording of the title and the way the story for the episode plays out.

Maud can hear the Timber Wolves cry to the Lunar Basalt and can sing with all voices of the mountain. With that ability comes Maud Sense, the ability to communicate with the earth around her and find what she desires to find.

Well, the real question is *Does the Pinkie Sense and Maud Sense come from Igneous Rock Pie and his side of the family, or does it come from Cloudy Quarts and her side of the family, if this is in fact a family trait?* That also makes me wonder if the Apple family, being "possibly" related to the Pie family, also has inherited this special talent. It would explain how Applejack was able to find Spike so fast, knowing he was in danger in "Spike at your service". I'm sorry, but the whole "she happened to notice the hot air balloon going astray", doesn't convince me, if her attention was focused on apple related things at the time.

I saw in the flea market a plush toy that looked like one of the Teletubbies: Tinkie Winkie. And the piano from FAO Schwartz but sadly it was closed almost two years ago now. I liked this episode and how light and fun it was. Maud was by far the best and I jumped when I saw how fast she just seemed to teleport when the ponies tried to move away from her.

You forgot to mention that Smarty Pants also made a cameo in that same scene alongside the Twi scepter, shark plushie, and the Inspiration Manifestation spell book. We haven't seen Twilight Sparkle's (now Big Mac's) doll since Ponyville Confidential, making her the longest reference in making a reappearance! I was wondering if we'd ever see that doll again, though I'd rather think it's another doll that happens to LOOK like Smarty Pants and the real Smarty Pants is still in Big McIntosh's possession.

These kind of slice- of- life episode reminds me of the Looney Tunes cartoons cause they are very Re-watchable.
Especially if they have good fun story, nice artistic animation design and lots of good humor.
For me this episode is so good that almost every few moments I would rewind it back and really appreciate some of my favorite humorous or fun scenes (which is a lot) whether is it Pinkie Pie's funny antics, Rarity's lively dramatics or Maud's dry humor, they are a great trio combo.
The urban art design is so nicely done as well that i can't help but sometime pause it from time to time and enjoy its beauty such as the:
Rock pooch store, outdoor restaurant, building designs, toy store, gem store, lake park, random unique items and of course the usual background ponies (especially the new ones).
This is one of my most favorite episodes. It's a great lively slice of life.

This was really, really sweet. I love these emotional episodes with pinkie pie, and I liked that while this has been done to death, it was still rewarding to watch, and yes, Rarity doing a pinkie pie impression was very amusing
And I can't help but feel Rarity's dismay at the prospect of a pinkie pie musical number and the subsequent subversion of it being a brief singsong phrase was a bit of self-satire on the show's part

Hey Doctor Wolf, I have to say I enjoy hearing your opinions and analysis on mlp.
Anyway, this episode really got me smiling and laughing here and there, especially the PERFECT impression of Pinkie Rarity had done. I've had to re-wind that part a few times just to be able to listen to everything Rarity's saying.
As for the "Maud Sense", I believe this, along with the Pinkie Sense and Cheesie Sense Cheese Sandwich have, is actually Earth Pony magic. During Season 4 Finale, Trek absorbs magic from everypony in his paths. Obviously, we know about Unicorn magic, and Pegasus magic have to be their ability to fly, so these three senses mentioned above had to be examples of Earth Pony magic.
