  • Welcome back everyone! Today we tackle the annoying problem of lean codes on our e46 2003 330CI convertible. This was caused by a vacuum leak on the intake boot that fits on the throttle body. I show you leak testing with the smoke machine and we discuss how these codes set and what may cause it.

This is one of the better videos on this subject, but it too fails to mention a pretty common source of the vacuum leak. On the underside of the intake manifold, pointing to the rear, there are three nipples that are used as attachments for vacuum lines on some BMW models but not others. On many models, the nipples are covered by rubber caps. With time and heat the caps can crack and leak, or even fall off, thus creating an even bigger leak. Check these first. If this is the problem as it was on mine, it is a 5 minute $0.50 fix.

@coach J If you want to go pure BMW replacement parts, any good BMW parts dealer should have replacement rubber caps for about $5 - $10 per cap. I went to Amazon, searched for "rubber caps", and got an 80 piece assortment of good quality rubber caps for about $9 that are working perfectly. (As a short term fix to verify that it is the root of your problem, a piece of tape over the end of the nipple will suffice.)

If you remove the cabin filter housing and the disa valve you can get to the lower intake boot hose clamps with ease. Could also move the brake booster hose.

Awesome video. I have a similar situation but with a different lean bank 2 code, P1092. Nobody seems to have this code or a video for it. I replaced spark plugs. The rubber boot, the Disa valve seal and injectors seals. My ICV rattles normally. Please advise.

    I have a 2005 325i
    -P0171/P0174 & P0442
I can hear a hissing noise beside the drivers side rear wheel makes me think I have a evap leak in the system! Which would throw that P0442 but not to be certain! as far as the P0171 /P0174 I can clearly tell that the valve cover gaskets must be leaking from how oil saturated it is ! Plus my intake boot for the most part pretty dry rotted

Will this problem make your car jerk a little when stepping on the gas and I have no problem on the freeway it’s only when I step on the gas from 0 to 10 take a min to shift to first other then that it’s runing good idk

Mines rattle/burp at 1200-3000 rpm 1-3 gear. Once I pass 45mph it run smooth. It happen when I accelerate, have to let gas off for a sec and re accelerate then rattle noise go away.
It’s bottom passenger side. By the muffler? Thinking heat shield or leak from the boot. But I’ll check

My 330ci auto failed MOT in UK emissions test, too lean. Codes p0171 and p0174 show up saying too lean and EML on. Not drivable anymore, engine just cuts out when put into D. It's 20 years old and 79,000 on the clock, looking at scrapping it because can't find out what's wrong with it except p codes. Guess getting 20 years out of a car isn't too bad 😢😢

Could be vacuum leaks beyond what this video shows. You have many vacuum leak problem areas underneath the intake, within the PCV system. May also be a weak fuel pump.

    • @AutoScholarwithMrB

Normally with vacuum leaks, lean conditions would be constant. I would look at maybe a faulty front o2 sensor or a weak fuel pump. Thanks for watching!

I changed the fuel filter, then this morning the car almost didn't start, it had no gas going to it. then it started and ran fine except the throttle was weird. Great video Mr B, im having a similar problem on a 2003 M54B30 im hoping someone can guide me in the right direction. Short time ago i unintentionally run the car a bit too low on fuel (not empty) and engine light came up with P0171/P0174/P0313. Been chasing this issue for a while now as its only ever been a summer car but i really need to get to the bottom of it.
    Checks made -
Vacuum leak test, found a small leak from ccv and sealed up
Fuel pressure test came up just above 57psi consisitantly (th-cam.com/video/GyExerUnK6w/w-d-xo.html)
02 sensors ( pre cat operating in normal tolerances), one post cat sensor doesnt seem great been im not sure that effects fueling mix
Short term fuel trims on bank 1 are normal for age of car (-5--10), short term for bank 2 are sky high at -24
MAF showing 2.9-3.9 at idle and 19 at raised engine speeds.
Initially i thought fuel problem because of running low so i changed filter/regulator and no improvement, fuel pressure seems normal so not thinking pump. It runs pretty rough at idle with a definate misfire which goes after 20 seconds, idle seems to drop quite low when coming to a stop.
Could someone please offer advice as i really dont know where to go from here. Thankyou

I had an issue with another e46 just like this and I tested fuel volume (can’t remember the spec at the moment) and it was off. The pressure was good but the pump was slightly weak. I replaced the pump and all my problems went away. Really only caused issues at wide open throttle, which is hard to gauge with the scan tool if you are reading the data. I hope this helps! It drove me nuts for a few weeks. Thanks for watching!
