Little known fact: When Ray Guy, the Hall of Fame punter for the Oakland Raiders, first came into the league, Houston Oilers coach Bum Phillips was convinced that Guy had filled the footballs with helium. Phillips couldn't believe that someone could kick a football so high and with such incredible hang times. If you over fill the balls with helium they actually become heavier then if you put the helium at a normal pressure, because more pressure means that the gas inside is more dense. The helium balls didn't have more hangtime because the were over filled, which caused them to not have such a great weight difference. The reason the went further anyway though was because they were under more pressure, which caused them decompress (essentially bounce) faster after the contact with the foot. The reason the balls didn't go further when you threw them is because the weight difference is probably not that great, and throwing doesn't use bouncing like kicking does. I don't know though, I'm not a science nerd. But I'm just guessing that's what happened.

Science nerd here. If he filled them to the same pressure then the helium ball will have less mass, following Avogadro's law. Since helium is an ideal gas, 1 mole of it will fill 22.4 L of space at STP, but it will be less dense. I teach chemistry at my college :)

I was a kicker in college in the early 90s (yes I'm old) I had much better distance and accuracy without pads. Mind you, back then, they were much more cumbersome, so I have no idea how much of an impact they have today, but I'm willing to bet its still noticeable.

A factor not mentioned in this video is the pressure inside the footballs. Deestroying's comment at 8:12 that "these are kind of fat to throw" suggests that the helium-filled footballs were over-pressured compared to the air-filled footballs. As another experiment, they could fill footballs with regular air at different measured pressures and check for distance with kicking and passing. Higher pressure is not always better, at least for passing-receiving. Remember "Deflategate": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deflategate

Could have more to do with the density of helium allowing more compression and expansion as you kick the ball, would explain why throws don't see much of a difference but kicks go further in the same hang time....

You may have been able to throw it and kick it farther than air, they were very similar but also that means the air being a tad heavier it curves and is so much easier to disrupt it’s path, like you said at the end, yeah it would be too much deviation for anyone to be super comfortable. Not a better trade off to throw or kick like 3-4 yards farther. I would rather have accuracy over distance
