You need to thru-bolt your laminated posts...just shooting nails into that "sandwich of lumber" isn't enough to keep them from separating apart from expansion/contraction and cupping due to weather temp fluctuations...in a couple of years, they're going to look crappy...thru-bolt 'em with pairs of 1/4" bolts in pairs 1 1/2" from the edges...put a pair every 2 1/2' to 3'...countersink the heads and nuts (with, of course, washers).
Mel's got her end. I think it might be just slightly overkill. But I don't know the plan. And am not a structural engineer. Double top plate is a good idea all around. Will need it anyway if you close in the front roof over the stairs. Most of the weight of the roof is going on the walls anyway.
Made me laugh, when you put the 1st post together and planed the "Other " end instead of the end Near the bracket, where you could have just dropped it in.🤗😋Melanie How do you keep churning out these Videos and doing mum thiings👨🎓👨🎓💓Thanks. x x
It's great his you both think outside the box. That to me Makes the build not personalized. I know how careful you all are but sometimes you have to improvise. I know you both take safety first and your plans are well thought out. Your place is looking great. I know you'll make your goal to get that roof on by years end. Then you'll have the winter to work on the Cabin. I'm excited for you all. Dion Mel as you say, soon lol Love you all. I'll be shipping a package for the kids for Xmas soon watch for it.
Coming together nicely! Small tip when drilling into metal with a step bit....knowing gary im sure he has some wd40 or some 3n1 oil. Use this as a lubricant so you dont burn the metal or worse burn up your bits as quickly. Keep on keeping on.
Mel & Gary Great videos great variety of e every thing . Have a lovely time for Thanksgiving . Have a happy thanksgiving week lovely thanksgiving take easy 🙏🇺🇸 ❤️
GARY piece of advice when cutting pressure treated wood raise your saw blade up so only a quarter of a tooth shows underneath the wood thickness saves your blade from warping and dulling up due to material use to treat wood best wishes
Guys you are doing a great job not ever having built anything before. One thing you do is overbuilding and using more materials than the project needs, but nothing wrong with that just costs you more money. But Gary is a sharp fellow and will get it built his way sooner or later. I enjoy watching your video's, keep grinding guys.
In few years your gonna have Replace those beams. With 6 by 6 Beam those nailed together for a while You’ll probably get a couple years out of those stacked Beams. Then they will start to Sway. You notice a A bow in it then you know it’s ready to be replaced. I’m just saying it’s gonna happen in a few years. It all depends on the weather if the weather is pretty dry you’ll be OK for four or five years if the weather is nasty and wet, you have a bunch of wet seasons in a three-year period then you’re probably gonna have to replace it. Nothing to worry you can easily fix it. Just cut the beam and put a full 6 x 6 real beam not a stack together nailed one you’ll be OK.
When u have 2 roofs that go into a diff direction what happens if snow or water is sitting on the side of the mud room roof because it all slides down the house roof? Is there a certain type of draining system or gutter that will go there to help stop that? Idk if these questions makes sense to someone else reading them but if someone who knows can answer that, thank you
Hi mel n gary Sorry I haven't been on I lot watch alot of you in Arkansas!! Your coming along on house great!! Have happy Thanksgiving if I don't get to see you buy then
I had to laugh when Gary said,” I’m not a builder” my immediate thought was that you are the builder. When doing it for the first time we are always stumped, until we look at how others did the job, that is how I learned to build and got it done, slowly, as I could afford it with the breaks being the learning time, building on paper and in the head then in reality. It all comes together and gets done and you grow your problem solving skills along the way. Don’t ya just love those rotary hammer drills, they make the job go easily.. on he nailing of the laminations: I love the west system glues as they penetrate the wood well and are made to lock the flexing timber of laminated yacht hulls. That to me means that they are up to the task,of stabilizing those posts and beams when you nail and screw while it sets. You both are doing a great job., stay safe and take care.
I'm going to watch this and see what's going on and if i give advice please take it run with it. EDIT: OK Anytime your making weight bearing Posts outta lumber by sandwiching use wood glue snaking good between the joints. Because in time moisture and weather changes and weight bearing will make the boards start to get little gaps in them.
If I were you, I worry about getting the zip board covered. I know they say it will last fairly long, but I seen it breakdown over too much time.. looking nice though 😊
After there is Metal on the roof, well worry about siding and covering the zipboard. Its not the top priority right now. But SOON! ;) Cause you are right, it wont last forever that way. BUT We are NOT Stressing it. We can only do one day at a time. Thats it.
Or build it just the way you have it but on side of roof be like Rox and Ant greenhouse plexiglass so light come through make half your Mudroom a greenhouse just a ideas so keep growing your vegetables in cold season winter just a ideas
Great video. You guys are doing a fantastic job especially for first time builders, imo. When making post by combining boards, I’ve seen a lot of other channels put wood glue between the boards, use clamps to align and squeeze them together and finally nail them. It sounds like a lot but I think it would be faster.
Y’all are exactly right you can look negative at everything and be down and depressed or you can look at everything in a good way like y’all do and it’s very nice to be able to watch a video and someone not be negative. Thank you so much for your content……Tiny ( Len Price ) Houston MS
Y'all muscled that biggest one up like nobody's business! I might run 2 or 3 galvanized bolts all the way thru those beams. Just my opinion. Great job.
Excellent, I had to come back and finish watching because I got a phone call 🤨 😂 . That was pretty epic. I was wondering how you guys were going to get that enormous post up. I should’ve known better, where there is a will there’s a way . Rock on guys 💚💚💚💚💚
Good Job guys! I wanted to comment earlier during the premiere but for some reason there wasn't a comment section in this or any other video cause I went to other channels and checked their videos. So I restarted my phone and now I can comment. It was weird cause I could see other comments
Gary keep in mind I love you dearly but framing is called rough carpentry for a reason... You are using lumber with crowns, wains and everything else, you are not building a baby grand piano. Don't sweat the little things, chances are you plan to clad these posts to match the rest of the exterior of the house so imperfections will not be seen I would however put some through bolts in them to keep them from seperation just indent the heads so they don't cause problems with cladding. God Bless from your Canadian Friend.
good job guy's sounds like kids having a party inside by them selfes haha also when Gary was doing the feeding in the morning you or kids were yelling and screming to hahah oh well kids will be kids hey hahaha
You guys are doing an amazing job. My wife and I love the fact you never give up and are trying very hard. Wonderful parents!! Don’t let anyone decide your happiness. Keep going🤠🤠God Bless you and your family. 🙏🙏
I don’t want you think picking on you guys that beam Is too big unless you’re gonna go up with another floor like another level on top of that mudroom. 3 boards Now together could be your beam and it could be strong enough to hold that roof up. Do it the way you want to guys do it the hard way those beans are huge. I would understand if you’re going up with another level and then you’re gonna go up with a roof like you’re gonna have two floors I mean I know you’re gonna get angry. I don’t know what to tell you. I’m just sorry I mean, I just I just shut up.

Screw and glue
Lags are def a part of the plan. PLUS Those posts will be covered.
I’m thinking of the same thing,Mike and the box it in with 2x12 .
You made lifting that post look easy! Well done guys.

every thing . Have a lovely time for Thanksgiving . Have a happy thanksgiving week lovely thanksgiving take easy 🙏🇺🇸 ❤️
Put some 6 inch screws in the posts,it will hold together better
I'm English and I love how Americans call wonky boards 'wanky or wankers'. It has a very different meaning in the UK! 🤣🤣🤣 x
LOL!
Yes, it does! I Googled it! 😂😂😂
@@angeladouthitt8837 I nearly died when Mel said 'naughty wanker' 😂 x
Agree with Mike fox you need through bolts for your laminated posts

Your hair and makeup are so pretty, Mel!
Just an FYI ,use some wax to lube your bits , cut off tools and saw blades than they will cut faster , cleaner and extend the blade life !
Should have glued and bolted together to form a solid beam to last a long time !
For beginners, you're doing well. Yes, there are mistakes. However, that is how we humans learn. Keep on, keeping on.

Suggestion. Use the top of the beam you have to cut to crown the one that’s too short. Simple
Happy thanksgiving to you and your family
Great job guys ❤😊
Well done guys xXx
Happy Thanksgiving you and your family
Heya Clarissa and Jason!
l cannot help with any tips, never built a home. But l think you both did an awesome job. x
Hi guys
You have done a fabulous job so far and you have always worked to figure it out. You're building a very strong 🏠!
When u have 2 roofs that go into a diff direction what happens if snow or water is sitting on the side of the mud room roof because it all slides down the house roof? Is there a certain type of draining system or gutter that will go there to help stop that? Idk if these questions makes sense to someone else reading them but if someone who knows can answer that, thank you
you need your own woodmill.
Hi mel n gary
Sorry I haven't been on I lot watch alot of you in Arkansas!! Your coming along on house great!! Have happy Thanksgiving if I don't get to see you buy then
Love y’all’s show incase your post with 1x8 boards it would look like a solid post

Hey Gary, when you stand back you can see that the tall post off cuts may give you the material to cap the shorter post.
We will keep that in mind - thanks for the tip!
@SimpleLifeReclaimed 😁👍🏼

Probably the only place in Arkansas that will be heritage listed in 400 years. Geezz Gary you build to last.
How Amazing would that be! And theyd have the videos to study, for posterity of course! LOL!

Makes for more prolonged content
Yes i guess thats a bonus. Its not like were "intentionally" prolonging it. Things just tale time.
