  • Detroit style roller skating at it's finest, at Skateland Arena in Flint, Michigan for their Wednesday night adult skate session!
Unlike NY/NJ style, Detroit skaters step on the downbeats (even on trains!), lift knees high on the upbeats and have names for each of these pre-choreographed sequences of moves. The moves are called by the skater in the front and always end with a high kick of the left foot. As you can see from this video, many skaters add to these routines, but they still always end the same way. Also worth noting, Detroit skaters skate with toe stops! Check out how they use them in their routines to spin!
    Stay tuned for more videos!

U know what its awesome skaters with many different styles nowadays but my gosh what i cant stand about these sessions since when it became trendy for groups of folks to just stand in the middle and just talking back in the the day the skate guard would have told u to keep it moving because it's dangerous

I agree. And some rinks/sessions it can feel like half the floor is standing around. Like at Millennium in Camden, NJ on adult night.

does anyone know where i can find other high quality examples of this specifically? I want to get into rhythm skating but I really wanna keep my toe stops.

Detroit is def the style if you’ve got toe stops you want to keep on! Check out @detroitskatepage and @triple7magazine on Instagram. They both post pretty much exclusively Detroit content. This said, a lot of people come into rhythm skating with toe stops but eventually trade them for plugs (myself included- and then i went to a no toe stop plate). It’s an easier transition than most expect!

@@RollingInTuneTV Yeah exactly! I figure I teach myself as much as I can with them and see if I want to get rid of them later. I skate inside and outside though and I’m not sure if I’m gonna get rid of toe stops outside or get indoor only skates lololol we’ll see. Thank you so much for the recommendations 🙏🏼

@@mxandrew No problem! It’s not hard at all to remove a toe stop and screw in a plug. No need for additional skates. Only takes a couple minutes. I’d recommend slowly adjusting your toe stop to be higher and higher, leaving space to roll on your toes for things like toe spins, dips and crazy legs. Then eventually replacing the toe stops completely with plugs. You can stop on a plug if needed- essentially functions same way just leaves for much more space to get on toes. Once you’re used to it inside you won’t hesitate to use plugs outside. It takes most people just 1 or 2 skate sessions to adjust to.

Toe stops don't have anything to do with the way you skate heck u might need to stop in emergency if ur trying different routines or footwork

@@anthonytaylor7928 They absolutely have to do with how you skate. Some moves require them. Other moves they’re in the way.
