i practiced with eddie charlton for two years he lived in sheffield he played a lot quicker in practice a great cueist and a true gentleman to go with it rest in peace legend
Classic footage. Two absolute warriors from a bygone era. Reardon was always Charlton’s nemesis in the World Championship - stopped him from winning 3 or 4 titles, much like what Hendry would later do to White. Charlton was a fierce competitor nonetheless. He was 52-years of age here and in a Crucible semi-final.
Always thought 79 was Charltons last serious chance. Was 17/16 up against Griffiths with big leads in both the penultimate and final frame. Jawed a red with the half butt when 48/0 up. A Charlton Dennis Taylor final would have been very difficult to call
@@dlamissI feel quite certain Charlton would’ve buried Taylor by a similar score line as Griffiths did. Although Dennis had beaten Reardon earlier in the championship, Eddie was far superior in just about every department - break building, safety and match temperament. There would have been the question mark of course, of him getting over the line having never won it but, there too, was Dennis mentality ready to be world champion? I don’t honestly think so. He collapsed quite hopelessly on the final day.
@@chrisbland6942 Think thats a fair post and probably just about spot on. Taylor was actually 14/12 up on Griffiths going into the final 4 frames of the second day of the final.....I agree regarding your comment about Charlton getting over the line as he yes indeed would have been under immense pressure in the final had he beaten Griffiths knowing as I mentioned it was probably going to be his final realistic chance of winning it with all the younger players coming through etc...and he himself had been known to wobble more than once
Eddie Charlton one of the most underrated players of all time. One of the greatest potter's. Maybe not long pots but mid-range there's similarities to Neil Robertson.
@Storm Woods no problem. That shot at 1.09,04. Ray playing into the Reds of tha black. If that was a player today the commentator and panel would be having an orgasm. Back then it was like a normal expected shot. The crowd didn't even react... It's really strange.
Thanks for the upload and watched live. Remember it well. Both great players but Reardon would have proved himself a great in ANY era. I must say I was bitterly disappointed that you cut off the broadcast at the start of Reardon's post match interview with David Vine. It completely ruined it.
@@mjt_snooker1704 do you have the 1990 & 1991 finals. Also 1991 & 1992 uk finals Plus 1986 & 1987 mercantile final and 1989 world matchplay final. Plus have you Jimmy white alex Higgins 82 semi final as well.
Reardon the best all-round player of all-time. Consistency, temperament, potting, safety, creativity, longevity, tactical, mental strength, popularity, style, table presence, humour, popularity etc.....Reardon had no weak links in his game Reardon is the only player who has ever had it all
@Joe Guitar I'm not saying Ray Reardon is better than Ronnie O'Sullivan, because Ronnie is the best player of all-time, I'm saying that Reardon is the best all-rounder. Reardon is the most complete player who has ever existed. Which is an incredible achievement. Ray had zero weakness in his game throughout his entire career. There is no other player who can match that.
@@leedaniels1468Yes. It’s clearly evident in his interview by Steve Davis. Spencer was envious of Reardons success. A shame. But I doubt it bothered Ray in the slightest.
Thanks great video , apart from 3 frames of last session a great standard from both players . Ray Reardon was a true legend of the game , Eddie was pretty good, would love to heard what he really said at end of one session !
Reardon was every bit the modern player you can see how much Davis was influenced by his game, Hendry came along and took it one step further by introducing the attacking style used by all today.
94 uk final Henry v Doherty was where John Street mistakenly put the black near the spot not on it. Charlton had them put A plastic rest head at one end of the table as he didn't like the brass head rest.
I wondered why he was using a plastic x. I assumed that players just used the plastic one back in the day; didn’t know Eddie never liked the brass one.
I have vague memories of one of the old players may have been Reardon or Spencer at least thirty years ago saying Eddie never used side on the cueball and that was the reason he never won the world championship. I think Perrie Man's may have been another player who never used side. Anyone know for sure
LOL. Fairly valid point tbf. Sort of also like 'Bowlers', but for some must've been hard enough to locate a Table if 'lived out in the sticks'. Was only certain Club's that had Snooker Tables until the Snooker Hall's etc Most of the Golden Oldies or players no longer with us must've been playing since they could crawl though, as Snooker isn't learnt overnight.
Always great to see Charlton lose to Reardon after the crap Charlton tried to pull off in '75. Shame everyone's favourite hero the wife beater eventually beat Reardon in the final this year.
Very enjoyable play indeed. This is an important piece of footage for the memory of these two masters.
Excellent! There wasn’t enough of Charlton on TH-cam for posterity.

41:55 That must be a world record surely!
A few free balls in there
Fantastic upload..great to see.
Likely no one has seen most of this since 1982.
The characters were so much more interesting in those days. Even Eddie Charlton, a player I then considered boring, I now miss.
love these old matches - full of personality

@Storm Woods true lol
Yes, should really have won a world championship.
That is one of best winning breaks in ever seen
Reardon was some player. A cueist of the highest order. Simply effortless.
couldn't stand reardon
Ray and Eddie 2 real gentleman of the game😊
You not in jail, mate? 😅
Lovely (2nd) 93 break from The Welshman/Vamp' and great to see Charlton in action.👍

Glad you enjoyed the match. As mentioned in the side chat, I wasn't born when this match was shown, the recording stopped at that point.

That semi final was probably the best match of the tournament. Reardon was in fantastic form and Charlton play great to stay with him.
he was a champion, like davis, ronnie, hendry, they all have that certain something
Due to his Transylvanian blood;)
Green to brown was pure class
Ray Edmonds sidies are absolute belters.
Reardon played brilliantly in the penultimate session. John Spencer saying Reardon hadn't played well smacks of resentment and jealousy.
Played better in the final session went from 11/11 to win 16/11
John Spencer detested Reardon

10:20 what a shot under pressure.
Two of my favorite players!
1:32:14 one of the shots of the decade.
Ray was certainly a master at playing the big shot when he needed it. Fantastic player and one of the all time greats.

Eddie was my favourite of them all and was one of the most unlucky of the greats. Snooker is not the same now, I much prefer to watch these old clips!
I love the way Eddie Charlton looks almost angry when he addresses the cue ball:)

Best player of all time O Sullivan .by a mile .

Reardon was 49 and Charlton in his fifties in this one
Ebdon v Charlton dream fantasy game!!!
Kin state o this vhs
Every time someone hit a lucky shot at the pub, ya always hear he's doing the eddie Charlton.
Eddie Charlton: brilliant billiards player, boxer , good surfer and v v v good snooker player. Rip 😢
He was also a very good at tennis and cricket.
Peter ebdon and cliff thorburn are playing on the other table and they are still playing now🤣👍
o yes Ebdons break of 11 in 6 minutes.....
Rumour has it that several people grew beards in the time it took to watch steady Eddie play snooker
Must have been an influence on ebdon
I Like Ray Reardon And Eddie Charlton
I don’t know why but Eddie Charlton reminds me of a Harry Enfield character.
Good upload mjt have you got any of the Higgins vs white 82 semi I can't believe the BBC left it out of their crucible classics !
Agree. And anybody who thinks the standard wasn't as good then need to watch both these semi finals in 82.
Eddie was in fact a very tidy player
Thanks for posting. The Reardon interview with David Vine cut short at the end. Do you have the full transmission?
Good congrattulattio

yes that is well known about Charlton, i'm sure there is a clip of him explaining this
He was often called plain ball Eddie.
Eddie at 31:50 uses side :O
I preferred Britain in these days
Unbelievable that the rest at one end has a plastic head! In a World semi-final! 🙂
Eddie Charlton in world semi final.!... nothing like this will happen again!
Probably because he’s dead 🤦🏻♂️

who was the female commentator?
Vera selby
Don't see players do that very often 1:25:02
I saw my dad do that when he missed a shot, pretending that the cue he'd pulled from the rack was bent. Never seen a pro do it.
If Eddie had more killer instinct he would easily have won one world championship just never seemed to kill frames off very often
He pretty much tried everything in 1975 to win it - rigged the draw, had his own table as the match table.
