one of my heroes! Barry could bang!! relentless, quick, good inside boxer, used his elbows to keep his opponent from escaping!! One of the best from Ireland!!
You gave us some great nights, Barry. All memorable, so slainte! You put a smile on our faces and a roar in our hearts. Cheers, gasun. Fermanagh man here.
Barry encapsulates the complicated relationship that Irish people have with Great Britain. He's Irish through and through, but professional boxing in Ireland in the early 1980's was not really a viable path for him. He lived on the border with NI, married a Protestant woman and for primarily better opportunities fought under the UK banner as an amateur and took a British passport for professional reasons. Life took him to Britain as it did many Irish people in the 20th century. I'm 49 years old and I still can't remember a more intense fervor in Ireland than when McGuigan was fighting at world class level in the mid 1980's.
he took British citizenship to fight for certain titles, but any Irish person, myself, family, friends, considered him Irish, treated him as an Irish sportsman and supported him. The British media - not your ordinary British person, but the media - have a long standing habit of claiming successful Irish sportspeople as British. The BBC currently describe Conor McGregor, who is from Dublin with no English blood, as 'the first UFC champion of The United Kingdom and Republic Of Ireland'.
i dunno how he worked that one out. With someone like Rory McIlroy or George Best I can understand some people making the mistake, but Steve Collins! A northsider Dub to the core.
@@James-b7p2k That's not what I said James, I said they were (because this was four years ago) referring to him as 'the first UFC champion of The United Kingdom and Republic Of Ireland'.
he fought for british titles to gain recognition, he said so himself. McGuigan was irish through and through. Born in ireland raised in ireland. He was irish. Before every fight the announcers said he was irish. So get your facts right.
Barry was asked in 1988 about a fight with Jeff Fenech and Barry Replied “ I’ve come back to win not lose” and I agree with the honest and humble Mcguigan here. Fight between them two would have been a great scrap but Fenech wins. He’d be to much to strong of a fighting force for Barry. Barry would fight until his last breath as he showed in Vegas against Cruz but if you back up Barry you have him beat ( Gil Clancy) and Fenech would do that. Barry is a better polished boxer than Fenech but that wouldn’t matter in there fight if they had fought each other 🥊. One thing is for sure they both respect the heck out of each other ✅
Barry must seriously regret making this programme, it is the claims he makes here about Barney forcing him to fight with an injury, that led to Eastwood successfully suing him for £450,000
48:02 Wow! I have found what must be the first known clip of Alan Partridge reporting for a local newspaper called the Advertiser of Stoke-On-Trent & Newcastle-Under-Lyme . Such a pity he doesn't concentrate on sport these days. We have truly lost one of the World's best sports Commentator-Reporter-Analyst-Personality's (CRAP's) ever.
mcguigan was irish and said he was irish but he wanted peace and didnt fight under the irish flag he fought under the flag of peace thats why he is respected by irish and brits
Didn't remember the outcome of the fight so it was great to watch as though seeing for the first time. I thought the black guy was going to hammer him at first. What a great ending. Barry was a hero to all in N.Ireland just like George Best, Joey Dunlop and Alex Higgins. All absolutely brilliant men with great spirit.
@@cloudminder5899 I like Barry but he did do a lot of skullduggery on certain fighters like Carl Frampton etc ....he robbed Carl . He used the same tricks that Barney Eastwood used to pull
@@robwood8331 I wouldn't be so sure about that. Frampton ended up in bed with the Kinahans. There's far more to that story than meets the eye hence why it was settled out of court. I know them all very well.
