The hike on the South Kaibab Trail to Skeleton Point is one of the quintessential day hikes in the Grand Canyon South Rim. It offers incredible iconic views, a twisting (and well maintained) trail winding around and over natural features, and views of the Colorado River. This day hike, recommended by the Parks Service, is a must-do if you're looking to hike the South Rim.

we just finished this week and made it to Ooh Ahh....we tried pushing further but that loop down to Cedar Ridge was a bit daunting. This is a great realistic view of the trail. We may try again since we know it levels out along the way. That climb up though isn't for the weak. LOL. Loved all of it!
I did this walk just recently. It was brutal but one of the most satisfying things I have ever done in my life. Next time is the rim to rim challenge.
I started the walk about 7am from the trailhead and returned after midday. I made the mistake of not taking electrolytes and learnt the hard way the results of this, almost collapsing.
We didn’t do the last leg from Cedar Ridge but now wish we did! I know it would have been much tougher but I think it woulda been worth it. Still, the hike to cedar ridge is amazing in it’s own right!

Stupid shows the River at Skeleton Point. The River is in Shade, you CAN'T see it. "The Hiking Guy. " I am 71, I go down to the River ALWAYS and back up a few hours later(It's a 2 day Hike; you ARE Supposed to Rest Overnight and go up BEFORE the Sun Rises. The First 3 Miles up Kaibab from the Colorado are called "THE Death Zone" by the U.S.Park Service I go up at 5:00 P.M. in 110 F HEAT-HOTTEST Part of The Day-on my last Hike)!! If "The Hiking Guy" did this, he'd be DEAD!!! FAST!! Google: Switchbacks below Skeleton Point. DEATH IS HERE; He lurks, he waits, he watches, HE KILLS. He has almost killed me 3 Times; twice on Bright Angel; once on Kaibab. It's KaiBAB, not "Bob." A BABling Fool...a non-hiking JOKE!!!

Cedar Ridge Park
If you aren't as confident in your abilities, but still want to get below the rim, taking the Kaibab to Ooh Ahh Point, or if you want to go a bit further, to the first rest house at Cedar Ridge, is a good half day hike. The hike to Cedar Ridge and back took us roughly three hours.

Cool, glad it was helpful. You'll probably be fine but it can snow. Even if there is a recent snow, there's so much use there (including the NPS mules) that it will be doable in all but the freshest of conditions.

This is a great video, thanks! One thing that's not clear to me though is whether the trail back out is the same trail a the one going in? Is it a separate trail, but ends at the same place that the other one started? Or do you hike the exact same trail in the opposite direction? Thanks!

Great video! Do you remember the temp of when you did this hike? I plan to do this in early August and plan to catch the shuttle at the earliest at 4 am to avoid the heat. I'll probably get to the trailhead around 5 am to start. I'm wondering how fast it will heat up even in the early morning. Thank you for your awesome videos!
Skeleton Point gets pretty hot, but if you leave at dawn / sunrise, you have a good chance. There's a thermometer at Indian Gardens. If it's too hot when you get there, turn around. Take breaks at the rest houses and hydrate.

I am so kicking myself for stopping at O'Neill Butte and not continuing to Skeleton Point. The elevation change is only about 385' between them. At the time I didn't know it flattened out so much after O'Neill Butte, and assumed it would be descending quickly, which doesn't happen until after Skeleton Point.
ha yea, that's actually the one flat section... next time....

I have been watching this and similar videos for over a year in preparing for my free day at the Grand Canyon in April 2024. After looking for different routes, I decided on this route because of the fantastic views. There would be no advantage in going on the Bright Angel Trail because the water is turned off until May.
It is advantageous to research these trails before you go and TH-cam is a wonderful resource, reading about it is no substitute for seeing people doing it.

Going next week, deciding on shoes; I used Lems Trailhead last time (just time for Rim hiking) and would trip over the pointy nose. I want to try my Lems Mariners moccasin style cuz they’re light and grip my feet nicely but have flat bottoms. Decided: Lems Primal Zens; too late to order the Lone Peaks. And I question the water requirements; park says 4-5 liters, you say 1-3 L. I don’t want to weigh myself down unnecessarily. And park says 2 hours up for every one down, where you say 3-4 hours total to skeleton. I planned to turn around at 2 hours down, but maybe I’ll reach skeleton before then? Thanks, and any comments are appreciated!
The NPS literature is generally aimed at inexperienced and non-hikers. Lots of folks have used my numbers successfully. If it's very hot, bring 3L. Carrying 5L of water is way to heavy for this distance. If the temps are crazy hot, just give it a skip.
I'm going to Grand Canyon this weekend with my fiancé. Which hike is your favorite, South Kaibob trail or Bright Angel? We are in good hiking shape. I'm just not sure which one is the best choice for a one day hike. Thank you!
I like South Kaibab better but I'd say that Bright Angel is probably the signature hike at the GC (but more crowds). Have fun!
On a scale of 1to ten how strenuous is it. Ten being the hardest. I just hiked the continental divide in the Rockies n it kicked my butt. Trying to compare, going there next month.

I have been there in the winter and it can be snowy and icy. It's the weather, so a bit of a crap shoot. When I have done it in the winter, I've used micro-spikes on my boots and been fine. You can see the ones I use here: hikingguy.com/best-hiking-gear/ - or you can usually get cheapy (but effective) ones in any of the stores there that have camping gear. I'd say plan your trip. If the weather is horrible, do the Rim Trail all the way (guide on my site) which is fine in any weather.
A lot of this trail does not seem like it’s 4’ wide! 😩 It looks like you can only walk single file! 🤷♀️ What happens if other people are coming up? Or worse, Mules!? 😬 I’m going for the first time in a few weeks. Now I’m terrified! Please tell me if my fears are warranted! Being on a knife-edge 1 mile up while giant beasts and their riders with legs sticking out on each side come from the opposite direction seems like a disaster waiting to happen!😳 At ooh -ahh point the trial is not only narrow but very rocky! You said people aren’t falling off but I feel like if you’re taking a photo or distracted by the scenery you could easily trip over one of the rocks or boulders and tumble to your death! 😬😬😬 The trail doesn’t look paved or maintained as it did in the start of the video. Please explain. I’m super nervous now but going for my 50th birthday and super scared now! I am a recreational hiker.
There's plenty of room to pass and mules pass hikers and vice versa all the time. A person died at Ooh Ahh in recent years because they were taking a selfie (I think). Thousands and thousands of people visit all the time without any problem. You'll be fine.

what if we go pass the skeleton point and continue on the trail? will we eventually hit the bottom part of canyon?
