NYC: Subway and LIRR in Woodside, Queens

- Today we are in the neighborhood of Woodside in Queens, New York City. Woodside is served by the IRT Flushing Line of the New York City Subway (which runs here on an elevated route) as well as the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), a busy commuter railway.
Woodside - 61st Street station is a major interchange between the Subway and LIRR. The most part of the film shows this station. We start at the platforms of the IRT Flushing Line, which has an express stop here. The film was shot on a Saturday, and while there is usually no express service on this line on Saturdays, there was engineering work taking place, which forced Flushing-bound (7) trains to run express from Queensboro Plaza to 74th Street - Broadway.
The second part of the film is then devoted to the LIRR station, showing some trains from and towards Penn Station in Manhattan. Since the Subway tracks run elevated above the LIRR station, one can capture beautiful shots that include both LIRR and Subway trains.
The film finally concludes with some (7) trains at 69th Street station, one station closer to Flushing. We see a Flushing-bound (7) train passing the station on the express track and switching to the local track just beyond the station.
Enjoy!
Filmed on Saturday, 26 September 2015.
Aah. Nostalgia. Been here on the 7 Flushing line. And the LIRR.😀😀
That's so cool! I think it's cool how the 7 train is the only subway that meets with Metro-North Railroad, and Long-Island Rail Road!
Loved this video! I took the LIRR all the time growing up and although I never got off at Woodside I remember seeing the station and seeing the 7 line above
Good video for me to see today, Luftschlange. You can visit Franklin Avenue subway station anytime! : )
Great video! Really enjoyed it! Regards from Liverpool, England.
Ahhh... this is the line I grew up with. I had almost forgotten how incredibly loud everything is around this station. Emergency vehicles, airplanes, and lots of rail gaps/unwelded rail...
awsome video bro! really love them too!
I miss living on Long Island and taking the train to the city and to Hempstead for Islanders games... Good Ol days...
Great place to train and maybe plane spot
Amazing video.. hopefully these types of videos will become available in Virtual Reality (VR) this year.
If you live in New York you can go there yourself and see it in REALITY!
+Luftschlange I actually took a video from the front of the 7 on the 26th! Maybe I caught you in my footage!
Nice work, keep it up!
Many thanks for posting
Wise idea to use one platform for both directions.
Not very wise at all 💀
I grew up in this area. I used to take the 7 from this station to IS-125. Back then the subway was red in color.
Facts on LIRR's Woodside station setup : in the first clip all trains that arrive on the left are for the Port Washington Branch, anything else is on the right. The Port Washington Branch is the only branch not to go through Jamaica station.
+Chad M Thanks
Wow, I did not know that.
I haven't been to Woodside, but I have been to Mets-Willets point. It's a very elaborate station, and like +Chad M Mentioned it too is serviced by the Port Washington line. However, on most days they just run express service past it. Also, it seems like they have a real bird excrement problem at the LIRR Station.
+Digna rojas Whaaat?
Just wanted to clarify, the weird footbridges that were in use are called bridge plates. In this case, they're used when the track adjacent to the platform is out of service and the station cannot be skipped.
+onthe1train That's interesting, thanks!
In this case, two tracks were out, though I'm not sure why they chose two adjacent tracks.
Surprised you haven't done the elevated a train line in the rockaways. Or even broad channel. It's the longest distance between stations, and people don't know it goes through a nature reserve. At. Sea. Level. If it's working you should really try to get a shot in spring or winter in the morning, still one of the most beautiful things I ever seen from my middle school days.
i love trains
I’ve been here! I was at 33rd street-Rawson street, during my sister’s eye check!
Nice quality on the videos
I have noticed that the R62a's are on the (6) and now.
Ducks dd yeah almost all of them actually since all of the R142A's on the 6 are now R188's, actually I think the 6 is keeping 3 of them
GG Glaceon Yup, essentially Corona sent all but two of their R62s to Westchester and converted most of the 6's R142 into R188s for the CBTC stuff coming up. But recently Westchester sent one R62 set back to the 7.
Uh huh they are
The (7) and LIRR both travel from 34 St to Flushing-Main St by looking at the map.
nice video and channel :-)
Around 7:38 the train sounded like a Southern class 377
Oliver Blake Well both are from Bombardier
Ah non Monsieur je suis un Mirage-2000 wrong. M7 are from Kawasaki
Transit Sylveon Hitomi double wrong. M7 is from Bombardier. Source: the interior.
Thanks
I'm bringing attention to 12:19
Is that the 7's whistle or an L.I.R.R. train whistle?
The first Q train to 96 St-2 Ave leaves Coney Island at noon on January 1 in case you wanna be on the first train
+Dicks out for Harambe I would love to but I'm no longer living in NYC, unfortunately
Luftschlange :(
SEPTA operates a much better railroad. Always will.
NYC Blows. Especially at transit.
Greg p no one cares man
I Love The train station
Wow, trains in England look far more pleasing to the eye. I'd swap the LIRR trains for a good SWT 455 and GWR 387 any day!
455's look awful.
I don't know. I really dig the steel and basic look of New York's trains. Goes really well with the tough atmosphere of New York as a whole.
I would swap a 455 for a M7. I think the majority of British trains look bad. I agree with ^^^^^^^^
My favourite commuter trains are still the M1s.
Eyes are not everything. How about your back and as you say in the UK, bum. Your commuter rolling stock has those ironing board seats. Thin, narrow, minimal padding. Sort of like newest coach seating on a cheapo discount air carrier. I know we Yanks are bigger and to be blunt, fatter than you but a comfortable seat is nothing to sneeze at. These LIRR MU sets all have lavs as you call them. In Blighty you just have to have good bladder control for up to an hour.
lufthschlange take a video of the Jamaica center Parsons/Archer subway station
Is there any R62A trains on the flushing or now every single one is on the Lexington local?
2 trains, used on rush hours only as some R188s are doing CBTC testing.
Lewowis DSD I've heard there was no more r62's on the flushing line
Calvin H Nah, there're actually three now, Westchester sent a set back.
Lewis DSD as of 2019, there are only 2 cars (not sets) for garbage train service with r127/134
At 1:00 that r188 subway car has no stripes 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Nimble Quest ikr SOOO WIERD
Hey, you ever heard of the South Brooklyn Railway and NYNJ?
Interesting Fact: the South Brooklyn Railway connects to 36th-38th Street Yard.

Why are local trains on the express track?
Balázs Ádám Rácz Due to construction, local trains had to run express..

Its basically the platforms. Turn on CC for more details.

The r188 fleet looks like it's built by Hitachi.
Lubdhak Das they built by Kawasaki
omg look at what I found online...and by this time I was still in NY...
11 cars?
QuarioQuario54321 yep
Michael Morales why do they need that many? Now if only they had R160s which've 4 doors on each side instead of 3. It looks very lightly used.
QuarioQuario54321 I'm not sure why
QuarioQuario54321 The other irt subway trains use 10 subway cars
QuarioQuario54321 The F train uses 10 R160 subway cars since their 60 ft long
I saw no red line on the side of the first car
ItzWitherStorm it's not a converted car then
That's a pretty puoplar station don't u agree?
It helps that there are connections to the Q53 and Q70 there. (This was filmed before the Q70 became a Select Bus route, which was followed by the Q53 and the more distant Q52 some time later.)
