  • In the world of sports nutrition, a constantly evolving field, more and more athletes are adopting low-carbohydrate diets. Especially in the case of long distance endurance racing, an aerobic-heavy activity, wouldn't it make sense that athletes could benefit from being fueled by fat vs. carbohydrates?
This is a popular debate with conflicting evidence and anecdotes presented from both sides. In this podcast, we capture the personal story from a former Ironman Champion: Pete Jacobs. He's not a carbohydrate athlete, nor a traditionally ketogenic one...Pete is purely fueled by meat.
Pete has faced a life-long battle with his personal health. Ever since he found it nearly impossible to get his heart rate up during high school sports, along with rough bouts of fatigue and gut issues, he knew he was facing an uphill battle. Although he marched on to successfully pursue a sporting career, Pete has struggled in the health department as he pushed his bodily limits in the performance department.
With intuition that the core root cause was linked to his metabolic health, Pete gave the ketogenic diet a spin. He saw notable progress, but eventually found his nutritional calling to be one (or two) steps further...
    The carnivore diet.
    In this episode, you'll discover:
Why the carnivore diet worked for Pete and what health issues were corrected (bye bye leaky gut!)
What Pete eats: Organ meats, seasons with salt but no pepper, what animals he's tried, and more
Tips for endurance performance: Using ketone esters & caffeine, the power of positive mental reinforcement, and applying endurance ideals to normal life

    Hi
I had severe allergies all my life and even stopped training. With carnivore im training again. I cut all dairy to feel really good. So it is just meat and tallow for me. I added the tallow and electrolytes so i feel good.
Four months in carnivore without cheating. Years on and off.
For endurance imo three things are essential: eat more fat, enough meat (i eat like 2kg of meat day), electrolytes (salt, potassium, magnesium).
Something im learning it takes a long time to adapt. People say seven months, one year, two years.
I feel im improving day by day. Just zone 2 training so i can get my fitness back. I was really out of shape and some overwheight.
Lost already 6kg and feeling great. Im watching this video for the third time.
One thing to mention, im not sure if i ever will be able to run as fast as i did on keto (before covid). But i know if it wasn't because of carnivore i would never be able to run again. So im already winning.
Im hoping i will, cause of some people related. I follow pete on strava and man, he is fast. Looks like he is really adapted now. The guy is a machine.

YES Dr. Paul Mason is brilliant. Can’t wait to see how carnivore works out for him. 23 months for me now, but I am not a performance athlete. Also dumped coffee and cocoa for max benefits. Coffee also over lights my pre frontal cortex. I mostly do fatty beef, collagen, bone broth, beef trimmings in pressure cooker to save money. Not much pork or chicken. Plenty of pink salt. Recovery times from hard training are excellent on carnivore. Liver damage often associated with fructose and seed oils apart from the obvious carbs and alcohol.

In the south the obesity epidemic is shocking. I am watching great Ken burns 3 part doc on Prohibition that has all this great old footage of tons of people dancing etc at speak easys in the 1920’s. No body is fat. Except Al Capone, the kingpin Of Chicago. ..and that’s a lot of alcohol they drank!
Something definitely changed. And this was WAY before Ancel keys and the cholesterol anti-saturated fat propaganda took over. Before the 1960s processed food revolution.

    • @Jefferdaughter
      @Jefferdaughter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yes, and people were generally prosperous in the 1920s. Obesity levels in the U.S.A. remained fairly stable through the 1960s and into the 1970s. After the nutritional guidelines were issued by the USDA, that is when obesity rates shot up. (We should all be asking ourselves why the government, and why the department of agriculture is telling people what to eat?)
Fake lard was introduced by Proctor & Gamble as Crisco around 1911, though in spite of advertising, many people continued to cook and bake with the traditional animal fats they had always used. Rendered lard still makes the flakiest pie crusts and tastiest baked goods.
McDonald's proliferated in the 1960s and 70s, but their beef was beef, the buns did not have all the additives they do now., the Coke was made with real sugar instead of HFCS, and the fries were fried in beef tallow.
Nina Tiecholtz, an investigative reporter, wrote the book 'Big Fat Surprise' on how the demonization of natural fats parallels the increase in consumption of sugar and starch and 'vegetable' (really seed) oils - and perfectly tracks the increase n obesity, and the rise in Type 2 diabetes. Coconut oil, as a saturated fat, was also considered harmful, to the point that if you wanted to buy it to use in food, you had to buy it for use on skin or hair. Point taken. Yet, like all athletes, Jacobs is more in tune with his body than the average person. He changed his diet while training, and is still training on a carnivore diet. This level of physical exertion is far, far beyond what the average person will ever do. And likely beyond what the recreational athlete will do, too. So his experience is of interest.
Have you heard Dr. Stephen Phinney, MD, PhD talk about the husband and wife rowing team he advised on diet, the team that won a long-distance competition rowing from Calif to Hawaii? Phinney and Jeff Volek, PhD have done quite a bit of research with athletes in nutritional ketosis. They found definate advantages for endurance athletes.

    • @Jefferdaughter
      @Jefferdaughter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Good point, the small amount of pepper most people use makes it seem unlikely that the oxalate content would be a problem. It sounds more like a food allergy. It would be interesting to know if he also reacts to white pepper, which is reportedly significantly lower in oxalates.
Of course, a leaky gut allows food to pass out of the gut undigested, which can certainly cause the body to react to foreign proteins. Glyphosate is one of the substances strongly implicated in leaky gut syndrome, and is well demonstrated to devistate the gut biome. This is likely to be one of the reasons that grains can be so problematic for so many people, since increasing amounts of glyphosate are being used when the grain is ripe, to speed drying of the grain in the field by killing the plants. The chemical companies have asked for, and gotten, several increases in the amount of allowable chemical residues on grains over the past several decades.
Whatever the original cause, once leaky gut is in place... even small amounts of foods can trigger reactions, as you know.
Oxalates are just one of many substances plants create that can be a problem when we eat them. Dr. Eric Berg, DC 'Plants Don't Like to be Eaten; Thus the Anti-Nutrients'

The medical profession is recognizing more and more that chronic inflammation is the root of most non-infectious diseases.

I feel that it's about the gut lining. The (snot layer) is gone. This protects you from fibers. People that are doing raw kefir seems to heal also over 2-3 years. I add in bentonite clay and diatomaceous earth to pull out heavy metals and gut bugs. Only plant I sneak in is wild blueberries for extra C and a little fiber. This doesn't bother me at all. Still have to watch your carbs to feel good.

Berries make sense ancestrally, humans would have found and eaten them often.

Psoriasis has nothing to do with alcohol

Psoriasis isn't specifically caused by alcohol yes, but the sugar content and refined carbohydrates usually associated with alcohol is the root cause. My Psoriasis (serious) completely vanished on a carnivore/fasting focused diet.

Sabina Guliyeva in the absence of obesity dietary cholesterol generally has some, but not a large effect, on blood cholesterol levels - cholesterol is primarily (80%) synthesized by the liver, and it reduces its own production in response to higher dietary intake.

      Correlation does not equal causation.

Trainurmind 2C there correlations that are so clear, that you have to consider them worth something. By the way scientists can adjust study results (minus risk from smoking patients for example). AND you‘ve got oxidized LDL in your artery plaques = causation.

john m nope there is a bunch of fresh studies where scientists measured people’s LDL and literally looked into their arteries 🤗
