I have been 100% carnivore (meats, eggs and some dairy) since January 2023, and as of February 2024, I am now more animal-based (have re-included honey and fruits.) At first, I felt amazing! I lost weight, my sleep apnea went away, depression lifted and perimenpausal symptoms got better. But then, by November 2023, I started having sleep issues, waking up with mega headaches, hot flushes and night sweats were getting ridiculous, and I found myself falling asleep in the afternoon, in front of the t.v. totally drained and lethargic. When January 2024 rolled around, I went to see my doc (who's himself a big advocate for keto/carnivore/animal-based) to get my bloods re-checked and I was in for a shock! When my doc got the results he said, "are you ready for this?" Turns out my fasting insulin had more than DOUBLED (from 5 to 11!) my HbA1C went up (5.2 to 5.7) my homocysteine skyrocketed from 5.2 to 10.2, and not only did my LDL go up from 6.1 to 8.82, the fragmented test was now showing oxidised substrates in categories 3 4 and 5 (it was all in cat. 1 and 2 in Jan 2023.) My mean particle size also went down, which is not good. He told me my body was under tremendous stress and I should start re-adding some carbohydrates to my diet (starting with 20 or so grams in the form of fruits and adjusting as I go along.) I guess my body just didn't like being in such a deep prolonged state of ketosis. Perhaps a 100% pure carnivore diet works for some folks, but for me, my body "needs" carbs to be happy and function at its best. We all learn and grow, and it is the hallmark of a wise individual to go beyond ego and keep our minds open to new knowledge and experiences. Thank you Dr. Saladino!

Huh. I'm 2.5+ years into my keto diet, and I'm doing great. I never chased high ketones or tried to force any kind of macro or calories, just free ran it and only kept carbs very low.

Headaches too together with cramps bad sleep and lethargy. I am a cyclists and don’t do well on meat only ,freaked out one day after a ride, sneezed and my abs cramped so hard I nearly crashed.
Had to get off the bike, took me some minutes for the cramp to go. Sometimes my toes and fingers cramp. I am all for experimenting but fuck me the whole thing is not pretty. The other problem for me is weight loss. I don’t want that and I simply cannot eat enough meat to stay the same weight. I eat now carbs from veggies and fruit.

Thank you I am perimenopausal as well, And I have gone from vegan(5years) to keto/carnivore and part way back again. Cramps, extreme fatigue, hair lose, heart racing, constipation all plagued me as a keto/carnivore. Extreme weight lose, fatigue, and brain fog when I was super low fat vegan for more than a year. I did great as a vegan but eventually lost to much weight(including muscle). Im currently eating complex carbs/ with greens for a month, planning to add back in animal protein(egg whites first)as I see my weight get down where I want it. The little viseral fat perimenopause “pregger bellly"I could not get rid of on Carnivore is just slipping off in days. The long “interminant fasting” between meals while carnivore I could not do(hair lose, exhaustion, cramps), and when I ate more I started putting on weight. Going to try 1 small carni meal per day, and no sooner than 3 hours later eat: complex carbs+greens without fat when I am hungry the rest of my day(during this time when as a carni I would be fasting) and see how this goes.

They can eat carbs all they want , don't have high blood pressure, diabetes, and burn the bit of carbs they consume easily. Get active besides an hour at the gym and your body will be able to properly utilize its preferred source of energy. Otherwise people don't age gracefully because they aren't using their muscles. Age isn't the problem. It's the choices people make when they age.

Not a huge deal. I went from a 7.6 to a 5.3 on a high-carb starch vegan diet. When a carnivore gets his A1C test taken it's deceptive, because it is a test on glucose metabolism in which the KEto/carnivore person is depleted of glucose. Not jumping on any bandwagon but if you research Dr. Neil Barnard he discusses that diabetes is actually developed by the intramyocellular lipids or fat inside your muscle cells that interfere with insulin signaling. Here's a problem in the Carnivore/Keto/Low Carb community. There's a tendency to say "carbs" when what is actually damaging in overly processed, refined carbs loaded with sugar and high omega 6 fats. There are definitely people who are outliers and certain conditions that can be impacted by "clean" carbs, but for the vast majority of people with CV, diabetes, obesity, etc, it's really the standard American diet that makes us sick.

I'm 6 weeks into a ketovore diet and just watched this and became even more confused than I already am, there's so much conflicting information available these days. I'm trying to be strict carnivore during the week, and add some low carb vegetables and berries on the weekends, but its not going so well. Eating some lettuce gave me bad stomach cramps, I never used to have problems like that with lettuce. I'm wondering if the key is metabolic health. If you are not metabolically healthy, which I'm not, then first you need to heal, by removing all the foods which are causing problems, then you can slowly add back some healthy carbs once your metabolic health is back on track. I don't want to be a 'carnivore', I just want my health back, and figuring out how to achieve that is confusing.

    • @ThisIsQuarty
      @ThisIsQuarty 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

Just my opinion but the reason Carnivore "heals" you is not because meat is magical, it's because the diet black & white forbids you eating all the stuff that's harming you. I did Keto for a while and never got anywhere really, with almond-flour bread recipes and keto snacks piled in, no wonder. Carnivore was the right level of restrictive for me personally. Two years of it and I'm healthier, stronger, a good weight, better skin, better posture, clearer eyes... I don't think I could have healed without removing everything, I don't "moderate" well, at all. I agree with your 2nd half... nowadays I'm slowly trying to integrate other foods in and seeing how I feel... but I had to get here first, definitely. I went probiotic route rather than honey as he described, sauerkraut and kimchi, I noticed that I handle it fine. I must remind myself that Mr Saladino does not mention pizzahut & soda for his carbs... that will be the biggest trap I'll have to avoid, the easily accessible and addictive crap, that made me sick in the first place.

Regarding diet I think It all depends on how you have been eating and for how long. I understand that elimination diets are touted as the way to go but I think best to 'first lower' and 'then eliminate' the major common allergens. Like ...Soy, Dairy, Eggs, Nuts esp. Peanuts, Shellfish 'then perhaps some other 'plant toxins' like gluten, nightshade foods, highest lectins, highest histamine, highest oxalates MSG and highest Free Glutamate etc. I have also lowered highest Nickel foods (BTW most lettuces are high nickel.. .... Big project.
Good idea to work on healing the gut with things like Slippery Elm, DGL, L- glutamine, ION* Gut Support (aka old name was RESTORE) and Mastic Gum to name a few. I know how complicated this is but what I'm hearing is that it is best to take a long time to transition one's diet as the microbiome needs the adjustment time. Do not make radical changes quickly. I'm in a similar place and looking for a practitioner to help.,
Optimal health is not just about food....check out the work of Dr. Jack Kruse MD author of Epi-Paleo Rx. He believes that food sensitivities can be cured with other mostly free protocols like light management, CT therapy, grounding.water, and magnetism. He teaches light is more about health than food.
Diet + lifestyle changes = an even bigger project.
I pray for you @Jen.K that your find the health and healing you are seeking.

Most of these diets are just fads that prey on people’s need for “quick fixes”. Skipping processed foods is key, but some people feel better being vegans, others feels better minimising vegetables and being meat heavy (important if you’re having cross allergies, or sensitive to oxalates or plant toxins). You have to try what works for you. Most feel better eating both but in normal proportions. A stomach cramp reaction to lettuce doesn’t make much sense as a reaction to lettuce itself, it’s not a high allergen or hard to digest food, it was probably just a bacterial infection or a reaction to some anti-bug chemicals (lettuce is very hard to wash properly, and is often coated with bad stuff).

Just eat meat and veg----no nightshades(including potatoes, though sweet potatoes ok), nuts, legumes, dairy, coffee, alcohol, or grains. What I have personally come to realize is that we do benefit from plant based products through the meat that consumes those plant based products and turns into digestive material that WE can then consume and benefit from. Research has proven that our digestive system absorbs the nutrients and proteins from animal based products at a MUCH higher rate than it absorbs through plant based. It's the animals we consume that convert those nutrients into a product that WE can digest at a much higher rate through their meat and organs. If we were meant for plant based only, you wouldn't see people struggle and eventually become malnourished on vegan...but they eventually do after a year or two when it finally catches up to them.

All I can say is avoid sugar free drinks because so far those have been my biggest sugar spike of anything! Bread is a big spike! Fruit gives you a little sugar bump but quickly comes back to baseline, baked potatoes gives you a long sugar bump but not a spike. When I ate a potato my blood sugar stayed around 120 with some ups and downs all night when I ate one for dinner and I had trouble sleeping. So my suggestion is eat them for lunch if you want to eat them. I tried carnivore and keto but it makes me weak and kills my Libido.

Let’s all just admit that there’s a lot we don’t understand about human nutrition (so much more to learn, so much so, it’s going to take advanced AI to process it all). I’m doing carnivore for two months and have muscle cramp issues even though I’ve been taking Hammer Nutrition electrolytes a few times a day. I also recognized a lowering of libido. I don’t want to throw out the baby with the bath water. I’ve experienced lots of benefits being carnivore, but I think some carbs may be needed for optimal health? The cramping is an issue particularly if supplementing with electrolytes isn’t resolving the cramping complaints.. If Paul is right about carb intake being needed for the kidneys to hold on to these minerals, then what other unresolved issues might there be? Let’s keep an open mind while we get the kinks worked out.

But had my test done, blood and urine, and I am having enough minerals in my body. So the theory with minerals and crumps is not valid for sure. I am about to find out what is happening in muscles as I have only cramps in feet's and muscles below my knees. I am getting sometimes information about restructuring density in my muscles there. We do have fat in muscles too, same like animals. The best is to stay open minded and reflect, cooperate with our own body.

Fruit and honey were my biggest cravings trying CV. I got so sick trying CV, even with increasing electrolytes and trying to force myself to eat. I got to where meat and eggs repulsed me, which is crazy because when I ate SAD I craved protein. About three weeks into it, I ate a half apple and felt so much better. Now I added some fruit, honey and low carb veggies back. I downloaded a keto tracker and mostly follow real food keto, eat some carnivore meals and add a fruit or vegetable not really keto approved. I track to keep my carbs less than 100 which is a big improvement over my previous diet. I usually stay around 50 carbs or less. I get red “not keto approved” on my tracker, but I’m doing it for myself, wanting to lower carbs. I have cut out grains though. Which I loved rice in stir fry and oatmeal with real fruit. I’m still seeing improvement in my health eating this way. I was getting metabolic syndrome and right on the border of becoming diabetic. My next checkup is April. I’m interested in seeing my labs. Low carb diets are great for healing metabolically damaged people who were damaged by excessive carb consumption, not athletes. The only way you can manage a low carb diet as a lean, active person long term is immense amounts of protein and fat that is frankly uncomfortable for most people. Our paleolithic ancestors supposedly ate megafauna rich in fatty acids and protein, with even more fat than modern cows, supplemented by some plant stuffs. And when we did find carbs, we binged. And in this prehistoric landscape, a lot of the nutrients ketogenic and carnivore diets are deficient in were more readily abundant. The soil had more minerals in it, and so did the animals that ate plants absorbed from it. Rivers and creeks were far safer to drink from and contained plenty of these minerals as well.

The reference to tribal people always amuses me. "They find a bee hive and go nuts gorging themselves eating the honey." Much like going to Walmart and going nuts eating Twinkies. Either way is likely ok if you only do it once a year. He lists the tribe's 5 favorite foods as if nomadic tribes have access to Walmart and they only choose the tubers, meat and berries. We have a problem with access, and the way we were raised and dietary guidelines by the government was conducive to producing eating disorders (addiction to carbs) so at this point carb abstinence is the only choice for many of us.

Interesting. I believe context matters too. Paul is very active, so his body may more easily netabolize catbs. Other people are very sedentary by choice or necessity, so they may experience more difficult to metabolize carbs and at higher risk of insulin resistance/prediabetes/T2D among other metabolic related issues. They may also be at increased risk of obesity,,which initself is and independent risk factor for several health issues. Only exception is the super genetically blessed(not most of us) who can get away with overconsumption of sugar and carbs, end up seriously obese, and still live long healthy lives.

I like Paul Saldino but I think there’s some flaw in his logic. He talks about these natives eating honey. It’s always has honey is good and now he eats honey all day every day or every day. Yes they eat honey and they eat a lot of it once in a while. He’s also somebody who’s incredibly physically active, he serves a couple hours every day. I don’t know if everybody’s understanding about the level of physical intensity that surfing is. Bodybuilders work out a lot but many many people in great physical condition, marathon runners, etc. go surfing and get wiped out in 15 or 20 minutes to the point where they go back to the beach and have to rest so his level of physical intensity every day is very high which means he can burn way more of those carbs. That’s great if you can do it but 300 carbs a day for 95% of the people in the planet is going to over trigger your insulin and cause insulin resistance eventually. Just because something is good for you doesn’t mean we should eat it a lot of the time to make it part of her regular diet. Anthropologically I think eating things seasonally is good if you’ve got, some fruit trees on your property when that fruit is blooming have Addit, but don’t can a bunch of apples and peaches and pears and crack open a jar every day.
People in those cultures he’s talking about. I have to really work to get their food and they don’t have tons of it. Those people don’t find a beehive every single day and eat a huge amount of honey. They do it once in a while, and they eat their fruits and vegetables, seasonally , and that’s why they don’t have the same problems as the rest of society. We have 24 seven access to food every day of the year, and there are benefits to foods even grains, if eaten in moderation, prepared the correct way, and the right types of grains that are heirloom And natural. But when we just go to the store and buy these things and make a seven course meal or a big sandwich with six different things on it, we’re just doing it excessively and too frequently and not giving our bodies a chance to heal and recover

Dr. Ekberg said it best: “What is required to reverse something is very different than what it takes to maintain it.” This is why I said I will try carnivore for a while to get to my goals, but I will be adding some carbs back in and seeing how they act so I know which ones are okay with my system, and I will do so thoughtfully and not bombard myself with them because I know my set point is probably to be insulin resistant since I was in this state for so long. I know I have to be more extreme to reverse the damage I have done, but staying that extreme forever will likely not work when my body is back to functioning as it should.
When you think about it, this applies to anything that may be extreme. Even in medical treatments, if they have to place you under therapeutic hypothermia to reverse something temporarily, doesn’t mean that that should just be something you use all of the time. It serves a purpose temporarily, doesn’t mean it’s for maintenance. For maintenance or prevention of whatever the issue was, you have to look at alternatives.

YES YES YES!! I’m a holistic nutritionist and energy practitioner and work with people on a regular basis, to heal their guts with all their high-level of gut bug overgrowth, food allergy/intolerances, and also MCAS/histamine intolerance, etc. the KEY in all of this is we all need to adhere to a specific diet to HEAL for as long as the gut needs to repair and re-seal. And then start slowly adding back in non starchy, low anti-nutrient veggies and or just fruits and raw honey. I believe as a species we all have species specific diet that we should be eating, but we’ve gotten so off track and so much damage done to our guts that we can’t break down in any of these anti-nutrients in plant foods that would normally I believe be a healthy addition to a carnivore type diet. It can all get very confusing and hard for people that are very sick because there is so much information out there, and so many people like this Doctor Who is experimenting on his own body to learn so he can help others! I’m sure his body needed to be off all of the plant foods in order to heal and he can add some of these fruits and raw honey and and do well. That’s why writing a book can be a tough thing we evolve and change and we’re all learning. In my practice, I was strictly vegan and would promote 100% vegan raw food diet to heal! But I’ve changed that and now understand more and feel like I can help my clients heal on a whole new level w carnivore + type diet. I also use the wonderful art of energy testing all of my clients foods so we can set up a safe non-allergenic diet for them to heal.

@@sue-kh2we Exactly! What’s more, even when trying to reverse something, what works for one person to reverse conditions won’t work for another. I have been trying carnivore thinking I needed something extreme for faster results, but my blood pressure went through the roof and I have felt absolutely horrible in ways I have never felt before. When I did pure keto last year, not only was I losing weight and having better blood work, but I felt good. Why would I continue to adhere to a diet that makes me feel horrible when I can do it a different way and feel good while getting the same results and still resetting my microbiome? I cannot walk around with ridiculously high blood pressure and “push through it” because this diet seems to work for others. I will get back to baseline (or close enough to it) in another way, and that should be embraced by people rather than clinging so hard to a “one size fits all” journey back to health. I am not a professional, however, like Paul Saladino I realised that carbs are not the enemy as long as you eat the rigger carbs. The two things that made me rethink carnivore were the fact that I found out that the inuits had a genetic mutation that occurred rapidly in evolutionary terms that meant they were unable to go into full ketosis unlike the rest of the world. This showed that there bodies did not want this state evolutionarily. As well as this if carnivore is so healthy why are there no large populations existing that live purely from meat. As humans we are always looking to increase our health and well-being.
And purely from a physical perspective we have trichromatic vision which carnivores do not have, we produce amalayse to break down carbs an evolutionary adaptation and our intestines are longer than carnivores to give us time to digest plant matter properly. If you look at all the longest living populations that live to a healthy old age, a prime example being the Mediterranean populations the eat a variety of foods unprocessed and natural. If you decide to eat more carbs be careful as you insulin response will have been compromised by not eating cars for a while.

Tough to say without knowing some of your other markers, but LDL and/or total cholesterol are not solely associated with plaque formation. Check out the early results from the ongoing LMHR study by Feldman, Norwitz, et al., which Dr. Berry has a video on. There are people in that study that have had long-term LDL levels as high as 500 and have zero plaque formation, while those in the control group have LDLs pretty much all under 200, some under 100, and over half of them have plaque formation.

1: What diverse microbiome you have (everyone is different) Find the right fiber for your microbiome to eat and you will get benefits.
2 Your age plays a huge role with diet, I guess the older you get the more protein yet less sugar you should have.
3: It's all about balance whilst keeping sugars low and adequate protein, whilst finding the right fiber from vegetables, and fruits that's all it is (What to note not the juice of the fruit, the pulp fiber mainly) and with a balanced diet of healthy foods, that's all you need at the end of the day, not nit picking one way carnivore or one way carbs, or too much meat or too much of everything.
