Sounds like a fun time! Hook size and gear is sometimes overhyped/emphasized, because of the "bigger is always better" mentality. But hey, that's what drives sales in the industry!

In the case of this video though, I 100% believe that making these leaders helps keep fish on. Your 50 lb cat on 17lb line is an anomaly and most people would either be fighting the fish for 30 min or snap their line.
