How does Resin 3d printing work? The Basics Explained.

  • Resin 3d printing, what is it? How does it work? Why should you care? We cover all the basic of resin based printing. Also called SLA or MSLA printers use a fundamentally different use of technology than filament based printers. Liquid Photopolymer resin is used as the material instead of PLA or ABS plastic. Then the LCD screen below the liquid bath selectively blocks UV lights from shining into the polymer. This solidifies instantly and makes one layer! Those layers stack upon each other just like a "Normal" 3d Printer!

    I'm curious about this because all the videos I've seen make it look like there's just like a pool of liquid and then all the sudden somehow the whatever it is just starts coming out of it which doesn't make any sense versus the other ones which are easy to comprehend.
    You guys explained this really well.

    This is a VERY helpful video for learning the differences between FDM and Resin 3D printing! I had heard of resin printing, but didn't really know anything about it. Not only is this a great, interesting, and informative video on 3D printing, but were I in the market or wanting to get into 3D printing, I'd want to watch this video. Very helpful and interesting... and yes, I think he's earned another month's rent ;)

      As a new convert to resin, there are water washable resins now. No need for IPA and we get the water washable resin around $25 per kg. Ofc the dirty water is toxic and need to be left on the sun for the resin remnants to harden. Also we have to cure the supports before we dispose them.

    It also depends for what you're going to print. For example, I personally bought a 3D printer to print parts for DIY projects etc. So I don't really care a whole lot about super fine prints like a resin printer can do. A 0.2MM nozzle is more than fine enough for me. Also resin printers are usually pretty small as for the bigger printer you want, the bigger LCD display in the printer etc which brings the cost up dramatically. However for people who more want to print figurines or other art related stuff, or in general where fineness plays a really big factor, I can really see the value of a resin printer.

    My question is why can't you scale it up? Couldn't you just have a larger pool of resin? Or is the main problem gravity, since the model is being lifted out of the bath upside down, like you said, a huge resin printer would have a super heavy model and it wouldn't successfully keep sticking to the bed upside down? Is that it?

      Honestly, the best way to smooth them is sandpaper. Slowly getting finer and finer grit. A faster method that doesn't work quite as well is to find a high-quality filler/primer spray can that works on plastic. It filled small gaps fairly well.

The higher the resolution of that screen, the more details possible to print. And to a certain extent it can print moving parts. I still dont understand completely. If the light is what hardens the material wouldn't you need need physical blockers in the tank depending on what you are making? Like if you are printing the structure for a open faced cube. You have the base with 4 pillars that would be the walls that I get but when you print the top of the cube then part of the cube you dont want resin is exposed to light also. Or better yet a dumb bell? When it started to print the handle wouldn't all the resin between the tops of the weights be exposed to the light? Also if you have to be careful of uv light how do the UV light refractions not mess up the print? The red Hogwarts looked really transitive and I can only imagine how much light refractions the was giving off to surrounding resin even with the base light restricted

    • @jhhn369
      @jhhn369 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right that the resin is clear, in the visible spectrum anyway. The resin absorbs UV light and uses it to form bonds that solidify the resin, Because of this, the resin is actually extremely opaque to UV light at the 355-410nm range so bleedthrough is not really a problem.
