I tried to make this Strategy as simple as possible while maintaining it's integrity to be effective. In many cases you guys will be able to take 1 big blob from 1 fort to the next. And then into relieve Constantinople. You can have an additional 3k by using the sally forth on your capitol! Enjoy and good luck you damn guys!
Have you considered over-leveraging your crownland by getting all the monarch point privileges in November '44? The way crownland equilibrium works, you can often leap from 4.9% crownland to 18% crownland after your first Ottoman war, and continue to grow without seizing land by hoovering up the rest of Greece. It obviously risks more debt, but the early monarch points add up pretty quickly. In this case the order of events would be All three privileges -> Develop in Morea once -> Sell Crownland for 200 ducats -> Seize land.
It looks like they nerf Eastern Rome with every patch, I've just tried this strat at the start of the month and the Selanik fort got turned back on to full maintenance in a few days.

As most ppl here, in many of my runs the Ottoman waited in Constantinople with a 32K death stack. What I did differently then, was to hire one mercenary army more than budgetmonk did hire, and sent them to Constantinople on the 1st day of the month and the death stack didn't wait in Constantinople this but split up, just like in the video. I'm not sure though, if this will increase the chances if the troops splitting up. Also try to get Hungary or any other country big enough, to ally you. Otherwise the Venetians will swoop in and declare war on you.
i just reinforced with my forces (25k of my own 8k allies) and that let me win 1 day apart from each other, i broke the main stack and then chased them through greece to get the stack wipe.
I really appreciate it's sped up and not cut. I always feel like I'm missing something from other "opening" guides. Now I can pause and just see what you did. Most streamers think some actions/tabs are self explanatory and omit them in guides, when actually there are so many things you explained. I'm 100h+ into this game and I just learned that spreading army increases spoils of war lol. I always saw it as some kind of bug, showing a lot of income in peace deal month which disappears after month ends.
I love how this has become a tradition with each patch! It's cool to have you explain in pretty clear terms how to get through that first war. Your 1.28-era strat helped me get Basileus at that time so I appreciate these a lot.
the fight in the mountains at 9:55 is actually really lucky. ottomans stack wiped which should mean they are the defender if any new fight happens in that province, but after a stack wipe the game makes you wait a day before you can do anything and sees you as entering that province that next day. since you arrive the same day as that, byz tag comes before ottos tag, meaning you get the defense in the mountains still
Wow, I'm a new player and this video is so great! I love that you are talking about not only about your meta thought process but also what's behind all those mechanical kind of tricks and why you decide to do it! You got a fan!
Ive followed the last guide for this and it worked like a charm, same for Austria into revoking the privileges. Great explainations on the games mechanics which not only shows you how to do it but teach you, i'm loving your content
Great guide, but one thing I would add is that at the beginning give the clergy the privilege that gives 5% morale when at war with heathens or heretics. It’s a small little bonus to help win that first war against the ottomans but it definitely helps
Monk, this is a brilliant video, I was looking forward to it. I would personally really love to see your follow up video, it would be golden for us to see how to progress from this point.
Nice to see you switch from what i percieved as an arrogant way to talk to this new chill and ''explainy'' one. I like your content and hope you will keep sharing your knowledge to us using this nicer tone in your videos :)
Comparing to your other Byz guides, this is by far the best, most solid, least cheesy one. I did bash some of your earlier guides in the comment section due to them being dependant on certain luck factors. But this one is certainly doable almost 100% of the time, given that the player doesn't make huge mistakes. Gratz.
I used to not really like your format in making your videos, but now I think it's a great format, well done I will be reproducing this strat for the new patch :)
Amazing guide, tried it out and it worked first try. Used my own dates for when i did stuff, but other than that i used the exact same build and it worked perfectaly. Good work!
I agree with what you said that this is a good video for people who are not as skilled as you. Especially because it's so early in the game, like you said. Even if a new player watches then and messes it up, its so close to the beginning of the game and theres so little setup that they can just try again. Thanks for the advice!
This guide is great. I followed it to the letter, branching off only a little bit after the initial steps of the war (took Selenic, took, Gelebolu) when the AI acted a bit differently. The AI attacked me in Gelebolu with a 14k stack once I had it occupied, so I was able to wipe them, and then they attacked with their 16k stack and I beat that by a hair's breadth. A little bit lucky on my part, but it just made the war a little easier. I'd love to see more Byzantium videos.
I'd love to see a continuation of this! This is a great format for these kind of tutorials, and seeing even more of this kind of run will help give a lot of players (myself included) a better idea of how you could proceed post-Ottoman wars
Hey BudgetMonk. Since you asked for feedback, i have some for you. I actually never managed to defeat the Ottomans as Byzantium myself and lost interest in trying since it was so frustrating for me. But then i discovered one of your "how to own as Byzantium" -guides and tried it for myself. I never had as much fun in an eu4 Campaing again. It was just so rewarding to defeat the Ottomans without exploits(even though it wasnt my own tactics and had to try multiple times). So just thank you and keep up the good work
You made some great adjustment to this "series" trough the years, i'm glad you did even i wasnt i need of it personnaly, but its easier to follow, more detailled, more realistic for newer player, and the vibe is still great, keep up the good work,, hoping for the follow up video wich would be very nice!
Very nicely done, i must say. Myself i have about 300 hours and i kid myself to think i'm able to learn quickly, so this might be my new strat, i've been trying some before Leviathan and the results were mixed, to be generous. I really like that you had no hard cuts, so it was easy to follow every single step, even if it looked miniscule, those might be important sometimes.
it was super easy on last patch. Trick is ofensive war as they dont maintain garrison in galibolu and u can taka it right away, and block passage witch fleet on day one
Awesome. Love these vids. Incidentally, I just used a similar strategy with... Muscovy. At game start, No-CBed and vassalized Byzantium, and immediately attacked Epirus allied with Albania who were both at war with the Ottomans. After I vassalized Albania, I found myself in a war with the Turk and basically played out your scenario minus the loans :) Restored most of the Byzantine cores in one swoop before the first decade was up. Feels good.
This strategy worked amazing in the beginning, but after sieging gelibolu the ottoman armies started having a change of heart and did different things than what they did here, sometimes resulting in me losing a couple times. But it worked in the end, and I'm happy. Thank you for the nice guide.
I won my first actual war against the ottomans as Byzantium with this guide! Thank you so much! I immediately afterwards got declared war on by Venice and Genoa but thank you for the foundation!
Great tutorial mate those people were right the tutorials started quite hard to follow for players with little experience like me but this one is perfect thank you very much
Just destroyed the Ottomans following the guide. I've also attacked Ragusa to immediately attack the Ottomans again. The only thing I did not manage to do as in the guide, was to keep Albania and the Knights as allies (I've conquered the Knights in the second war vs Ragusa; Probably I didn't do everything correctly in regards to the promised land and the interest.). Also, released Bulgaria before the war so I can return cores though I was only able to feed them with the northern provides thus preventing Hungary from taking any provinces. The only issue now is the economy since I had to take loans again for mercs for the second war but I think I will be able to figure it out somehow. Overall, 11/10. Super easy unless you have bad luck like me so I had to restart my first attempt. BTW, I am going for Restoration of Rome and I was struggling yesterday, so that guide dropped just in time. Thank you, Monk!
Great Video! Havent played eu4 for a long time and havent been watching much yt content but I started playing again some weeks ago and boom now I see your videos in my feed :D The new DLC seems kinda buggy tho so im gonna wait for the next patch I think before starting a new game, my last game got corrupted and I had such a good start with saxony that I couldnt bear starting another run
There are also some another tips I discovered: 1) You can conquer epirus before attacking ottomans if they not ally aragon. Take arta and make epirus vassal. Their ships will be useful in war, also your core province will give you boost to economy and army limit. 2) In my run, ottomans had mothballed fort in Kocaeli (aka Optimatoi, that province in asia minor adjacent to constantinople). I had time before first month ends to transport 6k stack by ships to constantinople and send them to kocaeli. Another captured fort from first days, why not? 3) If you hire 4th mercenary band, hire commandant as advisor (+5 discipline) and unite your stacks with Skanderbeg, you can defeat ottoman 30k doomstack in constantinople. If you capture all forts in balkans while ottomans sieging constantinople, they just will not be able to retreat anywhere where you cant defeat them again. 4) After their stack wiped, you can go to asia minor and siege down some forts, it's worked on me, their armies in asia minor were first time too small. 5) To be not attacked by Venice, improve relations with them ASAP, maybe just after you get alliance with albania and knights.
Thanks so much for making this guide! Tried it out for myself and managed to kick Otto's teeth in and fully remove them from the Europe by 1453 (thanks to a truce break lol). Now it's 1500, I'm the 6th Great Power and I control most of the Balkans. 10/10 would reccomend!
Never tried Byzantium run... but this video is well done. I am inspired to try. Learnt some mechanics too. Like Endebted to Burghers is a nice trick. Never used it because I usually play trade powers France, Holland or Italian states... so no need.
As a side note, I also send the fleet to hunt for pirates in Constantinople, since sometimes The Knights raid my coasts creating a negative opinion about them which is hard to raise (+1 per year and it goes to -75). Once you ally them you can dismiss the patrol.
Hi budgetmonk love your byz guides, I’d love to see a Very Hard Byz guide because getting Albania as an ally is quite difficult and the ottomans are much stronger. Would be nice to see :D

There are also some another tips I discovered:
1) You can conquer epirus before attacking ottomans if they not ally aragon.

Great advice and video!
Amazing video! I’d love to see more of how you continue this. I have 2000 hours and have never used scorched earth before seeing this.
Love your videos and your content :)
Never tried Byzantium run... but this video is well done. I am inspired to try. Learnt some mechanics too. Like Endebted to Burghers is a nice trick. Never used it because I usually play trade powers France, Holland or Italian states... so no need.
nice guide budgetmonk !
