Haha loved this. Have to admit though, I don't find the ironing boards as insufferable as most. I greatly prefer them in these to whats in the 156s as their seats are annoyingly low to the ground and, as a tall person - I'd rather have a higher up seat with higher up armrests that happens to be very firm than sitting low down to the floor with my arms not being able to find a comfortable spot on a well cushioned (ish) seat. As a northerner, my expectations on rolling stock are clearly very low - all I want is air conditioning and well quiet (on the inside) trains on my miserable sprinter-dominated local line😭
Not been on a 195/331 unfortunately (despite having been to the north, I have only been on a Virgin Pendolino, LNER Azuma, TPE Nova 1, Manchester Metrolink and Tyne & Wear Metro up there lol). The closest to a 195 I've been on is the class 196 at WMR sometime back in September 2023. I thought they were alright tbh - certainly the seats weren't too much of an ironing board. My favourite thing about the 196s (which is true of the 195 too) was the bus like sound on acceleration, due to the ZF Ecolife gearbox. That said, strangely there are no 195s up in Geordieland (where I went last summer - best place in the UK but that's a topic for another discussion). Northern only seem to use 156s and 158s up there...
Deffo a very accurate review of them to be fair. I like them a lot, but mostly because a lot of my journeys would have been 142s before these, and they run alongside the horrible 150s most of the time too. However, a 323 will always be better to me, and the 319s are sadly dying as they too were better for me than these.
I've travelled on the 331s between Manchester and crewe and I don't mind the seats they aren't the best but I find them comfortable better than the 323s but can be improved
Great video! I think it would've been good to also rant about the 331 East/West swap as all units didn't arrive in the right places in time for the timetable change thanks to the units and the Class 37 locos!

Lol, 331 defo a speedhacker, 195 looks like a bus but its more like a train tho Also we have trains from CAF called the LRTA 13000 class, which it has a door sounds (stolen from the 195/331), but it been slapped with Japanese traction, but it doesn't mean it has no problem (the door sounds are starting to die, interlock lights still lits when doors closed but fixes itself and there was a waterleak issue which its been fixed)

@@MaverickHunterDaniel City Beam and whatever they run on Thameslink are rock bottom. Doorways need to be close to the bogies or there will be a hell of a gap at concave platforms. The 195 have three window bays outside of the doorways which is simply wrong, unless retractable steps are fitted. 23 metre vehicles are problematic in Britain. 20 metres gives you a go-anywhere vehicle. The mark 3 stock needed changes to the infrastructure to make it fit.

It's all about the geometry of the vehicles and the track. Rolling stock designers ought to know this. Whoever did the class 158 at the British Rail Technical Centre knew how to avoid platform gaps, but they had a competent team, now long retired.
Oh, there's this thing call a Bank Account, and it has this slight influence on what trains I can ride and get film of. The 397 will come along once that issue becomes less of a factor.

Went on a 331 between the same places, and then a 195 on the return trip days later. So, I've ridden on half of the Civity family in just under a week.
also Wales deserved better trains than the class 197 given how long the Manchester to south Wales routes are and the quality of the class 158 and 175 which the 197s replaced
As someone who's local to both of these (And we're even getting the Leeds units to replace 319s, oh no), I personally have very mixed feelings on these. The 195s are at least better then the 3+2 150s we otherwise get on our services, but they're also a far cry comfort wise from the 185s/156s/158s that also run this line - But even still, They've since added slightly more padding to the seats on the 195s in particular, which combined with the fact the cushions have been worn in quite a lot, It makes them a lot more bareable. I think I like the 195s, but not entirely sure on the 331s.

I was about to say "Why are NR extending the platforms on the Airedrie to 6 cars. 4+4=8 you muppets." And yes, the 3+2 150s are abysmal. I rode one from Sheffield to Wakefield and my friend can vouch for how much I was complaining all the way.
@@MaverickHunterDaniel You know what's even worse? The Liverpool to Blackpool express services are going from 4 coaches.. to 3. Wigan services as well, both are getting 323 allocations where 319 allocations once were. Blackpool services are going to be complete and utter misary in summer 2024.
These are really quite awful trains - I use the 196s and 197s regularly and, whilst they're better than the 195s, they've taken journeys I used to savour and turned them into ones that make me relieved to get off the train. Oh, the Electoral Commission shows that CAF have donated £175,000 to the Conservative Party over the past 6 years, and have subsequently won contracts that the Government has some control over (i.e., every contract these days!). Whilst the first of their donations (£50,000 in 2018) was made after the Civities were ordered, this nonetheless stinks so much I'm not sure I can trust that the 195s/331s were ordered purely to be the best trains for their passengers.

As a northerner, the 195s were a welcome replacement for the pacers. However, I agree that they are still FUCKING MISERABLE to travel on. One example in my case are, on a trip to Nottingham from Sheffield, two of the units both had their toilets out of order. But that's not the only problem, another one is that the ride quality is godawful, not as bad as a pacer, but these are the complete opposite, the pacers bounced and threw you around the train, the 195s (And I presume this is the same for the 331s) are such a harsh and crashy ride it feels like the pacers that were scrapped are haunting the 195s. The ironing board seats make me want to jump through the window that is not lined up with the seat (For fucks sake, is it really that difficult?) the trains are step entrance which means if you're a shortarse or have issues with steps or you're in a wheelchair, good fucking luck because the fact that a train built in 2019 has to have a separate ramp for wheelchair access is just ridiculous. The vestibules aren't separated from the saloon which annoys me, yes I get these are commuter trains but come on, it's just nicer imo.
The excessive step distance is due to putting the doors too far from the ends of the vehicles. The doors should be as close as possible to the bogie centres, as on the class 158. Designers of modern trains are clueless.

I remember the 153s and 156s having low seats which I found quite annoying too, so I know what you mean at least.

Honestly the NR 323 seats aren't that nice either, but they have the excuse of being refurbished, whereas the 195 and 331 are brand new trains.

I live in Manchester and I don't mind these trains, but I never fucking see them, still riding those awful 150's all the time
