Boris Johnson treated the Tory Party 'like his wife' | Exit Interviews

  • “He always treated the party like his wife and treated the economy like his own personal finances.”
Outgoing Conservative MP Nickie Aiken says she hopes history is kind to Boris Johnson because he "could have been an outstanding prime minister" if he'd had better people around him in No 10. The MP for the Cities of London and Westminster tells Matt Chorley why she's leaving Westminster and how much more she's paying on her mortgage thanks to Liz Truss.

Johnson 'could have been an outstanding prime minister' in exactly the way that Trump could have been an outstanding president - only by having a brain transplant from someone with a completely different personality, intellect, attitude, ethics, and competence.

I am a Canadian who used to vote for what was called a progressive conservative party. Progressive on social issues and conservative in fiscal issues. Then a second conservative party was formed. It was called Reform party of Canada. It was much further to the right and some of its members were evangelical Christians. Finally the two parties merged. Now I have no idea of how to vote. I don't trust the conservative party or the liberal party. It seems that the conservative movement has gone mad with too much influence from far right so called Christians and rather fascist leaning politicians.

Hate and division is the Tory way. They always use "divide and conquer" to pit us against each other and so not look at what the they're doing. It works too, an elderly family member came round at the weekend and said he supported what Leanderthal had said. He does not live in London, but lives in a nice house with no mortgage, and yet has issues with people less white than him, that have never, and never will have, any impact on his life. Most of the Tory-supporting mainstream media in the UK is an utter disgrace, and is responsible for a lot of this.

There’s nothing here from Nicky Aitken but excuses and clichés. Nothing about the Johnson government’s corruption in awarding PPE contracts to Conservative friends and donors or, heaven forbid, the Sunak government’s behaviour in respect of the awarding of current public service contracts. As for Aitken’s recollection of Liz Truss…..”I don’t really know Liz, to be honest”, after spending thirty-six years in the Conservative Party it won’t wash.

Aiken bemoans the lack of concern for Israeli hostages among the thousands of emails that she receives expressing alarm at the ongoing slaughter in Gaza. Could it be Israel itself that has diminished the importance of hostages by such vengeful destruction of Gaza? And has she heard of Palestinian men, women. and children held in Israeli jails without charge? Her comments belie her prejudices.

No Nickie, Labour are going to leap from 3rd to 1st in your seat. Clearly, you are going to lose the seat.

Behind her approachable, warm, arrogance-free exterior she's just as disingenuous as other senior Tories about Johnson. Before his selection as leader, everyone in politics knew about his consistent avoidance of the truth and the lengths he went to blame anyone but himself for the chaos he caused. We all know Johnson got his landslide majority in 2019 only because of his 'gift of the gab' about Brexit and because he was up against the unimpressive Corbyn.

The problem is right there at 8:37 when you say they are equally terrible.
They are in no way equally terrible. The terrorists took a few hundred hostages and killed another few hundred people.
That was abhorrent. Those terrorists should answer for those crimes and the hostages should be returned and every effort should be made to make that happen.
You don't return hostages by carpet bombing entire cities full of non-complicit citizens.
30,000+ Palestinians are dead as a result of what can only be described as collective punishment.
    30,000+ people dead...
In what universe are those two crimes equally terrible?
    A few hundred = 30,000?
And keep in mind the people killed on the Palestinian side almost exclusively are non-combatants so not the same people who perpetrated the initial few hundred deaths and captures.
Add to that Israel has been engaged in an illegal occupation and takeover of Gaza for decades.
There is no other word for this than a pogrom or genocide.
I've referenced this song before but I think it bears repeating. Sinead O Connor talks about Ireland and the so called potato famine and how the English damaged Ireland and gave it's populace PTSD as a nation. She says there has to be acceptance and then healing and I think the parallels between the Jews and the Irish are pertinent and need further study.
    Luv and Peace.
