Cram was a brilliant athlete but unfortunately for him his time at the very top was comparatively short (1983- 1986). He got his best results when Coe or Ovett were injured. 2 of his best performances were beating Ovett in the 1983 1500 @ Crystal Palace & beating Aouita in Nice 1985. Right in-between those at the Olympic 1500 metre final in Los Angeles he took on a Coe who had already had his toxoplasmosis episode but was just too good for any runner on that day. His blistering pace down the final 100 was something else! Coe, Cram and Ovett had different strengths, but they were the main players in all a golden era for British middle distance athletics 👍
As a German, I can only congratulate the British on this excellent runner. We very much regret that he did not start for Germany. But he would probably never have been so strong if he had competed for Germany ;-) What golden times those were for British middle distance running.
85 unbeatable including smashing Cruz over 800m but 88 with Elliot was his chance I couldn’t believe they couldn’t get past Rono in a hat 1500m Final I thought they should of gone earlier if Cram lead at the 400m mark he would win but his confidence 😢was never the same after he was beaten by Gonzalez in that European Cup race where it was slow & he ran the last lap in like 50:8 secs but Gonzalez ran it in 50:5 & pipped him
Cram's 1988 season had been going so well before the Rieti injury in late August. On the eve of the games he was upbeat about his chances but his early elimination of the 800 suggested he really should have considered dropping out of that event in preference to giving his all at the 1500. If he had done that then who knows what might have happened.
@@201081hero John Walker 1976 best thing thing that happened to him was being eliminated in the 800m first round we all know what happened after that slow final ran the last 300m in 39 seconds which is as fast as anyone ever especially in a Final & that’s why Van Damme couldn’t pass him he was behind him so would have to have run 38:5 for the last 300m almost impossible
Psychologically it did losing to Gonzalez always had doubts deep inside u ask him it would effect anyone your main Weapon is blunted of course it effects u

Definitely ones of the best ever
Great Cram...

Some would say that Graham Williamson, (a Scot) was a victim of the English selection process and that Cram was the beneficiary.
