This is super helpful if you’re like me and are looking for a way to use a secondary m.2 NVMe SSD on a board that has an m.2 slot that you can’t use because it’s PCIe 4 and you have a 10th Gen CPU. Great workaround, thanks!
it doesn't make a gen 3 slot or drive into a gen 4, think of it more as a pass though so it will use the highest gen it can depending on the slot it is attached to
@@mikesunboxing exactly, my board has 2 m.2 slots but only one is PCIe 4. Since I have a 10th Gen CPU that slot is disabled altogether, so I only have one working m.2 slot, the PCIe 3 one. But my board has 2 PCIex16 slots, so I can use the second one to install this m.2 drive slot and have a functioning NVMe drive for secondary storage. Much cheaper than upgrading to 11th Gen solely for the purpose of getting my other on board m.2 slot to work.

Nah i just tested with axagon pcie adapter, if I put in the 2nd pcie slot the adapter and using the mobos slot (which shared with the pcie speed) it wont recognize the adapter's ssd in one time. Separetely working with no issues.
Do you have, or know of a video, about disk management? I feel like I overcomplicate it. I currently have 3 drives, 2 SSD and a hdd. I have one SSD that is just my OS. Another that is only 250gb so I put what I'm currently playing on that, and the HDD is 1 TB, so I put everything else there. But I've been wondering if I had a TB SSD would it matter if I had everything on one drive or if I should still separate the os from other stuff.
The real question is, how many drives can one of these handle? I have two 1tb NVME drives on my mobo already, and I've got all my SATA drive slots filled with 512/1tb SSD's and a 4TB HDD. I'd like to have the option later on of adding more NVME M.2 slots via a PCIe slot, though because I have a triple-slot GPU my PCIe 4x is super close to my GPU, so I'd like to use a flex cable. For these drives speed is less of an issue.
My GPU is too big. The expension won't fit because of that. You know any other method to have some extra space but with high speeds? I really don't want to use sata. That's really slow I heard.
@@mikesunboxing Yeah but, I game a lot so I really want my game to boot fast. I got a 1TB M.2 NVMe in my pc now. I think the best option is to buy a faster 2TB M.2 NVMe and put the 1TB M.2 NVMe in a USB adapter. What you think of that?

Do you get the same transfer speed of a ssd which you will get from plugging in directly?
you should do depending on the pcie slot you are using
@@mikesunboxing i have a gigabyte designare z390 will it work on that? Currently i have one RTX 2080SUPER and a RX 560 plugged in already. Can you check and tell me? Im little noob
Can you boot from those adapters with nvme drive?
no sadly or at least not from most of them, it doesn't appear as a boot option on the boards i tested
can it be used for boot drive on a 450 motherboard?
i don't see why not
will this work if there is a graphics card in the pc
it should do but it will depend on the board and the amount of pcie lanes the system has available
Is this compatible with gen4 PCIe? Or is there something similar that would work for a gen 4?
Also, does this adapter have any effect on the performance of the ssd?
yes it seems to be and there should not be any performance hit from the adapter
Is it compatible installing in a Mini ITX motherboard?
if the ITX board has a suitable PCIe slot yes
What if only have one pcie-slot ?
then you have a choice to make, storage or gpu, or look at a usb caddy
I know this is late, but after following installation, Disk mgt doesn't show unallocated ssd. ???
does the drive show at all in device manager
@@mikesunboxing No, nor in bios, nor with any tool I've tried. I also tried with a x1 and a X4 cpie.

I have tried plugging in my m.2 to pcie but I don't get it showing another drive at all in the disk manager. I have a Z370 A pro motherboard.
GOT IT ^_^
working now?
I have what is required but I have just on top double ventilator GTX 1660 and I am not sure if this will constrain its airflow.
it might a little bit, what motherboard is it
I'm trying to do this and I'm having trouble with mine. I have a different PCIe card, but the concept should be the same right? I try to initialize but when I do, it tells me that the selected device is not available. I'm restarting now to see if that helps. :(
if you are on a B450 or B550 make sure you have enough PCIe lanes
mine does not see the card with the m.2 nvme in it.
pcie lane sharing most likely
@@mikesunboxing Solved i removed put back in restarted, then i found it to initialize, i thought defective slot card, but all good now.
@@LORISSABOOBMAN Glad to hear that 🙂
I cant use my other PCIE slots due to having a vertical mounted GPU.. is there a PCIE card that used a longer ribbon and the adapter board can be relocated in other area of the case?
you can get a PCIe extension cable and mount it vertically also
what if mine doesnt show up in disk management but shows in device manager

@@Pcmustang12 Glad you got it sorted out :-)
Up to how many tbs can I add with NVME to PCI expansion cards? I'm going for 8 TB for my first build.
that should be fine
Is there any way to add two more NVME Drives using just one card in a single PCI Express slot?
you can get cards that will hold 4 drives but you need the PCIe bandwidth to use them all
Is this gonna support samsung ssd 860 evo m.2 ?? is there any adapter for this kind of ssd ?
this one won't sorry but there are m.2 SATA based controllers you can buy, if you struggle to find one let me know and i'll see if i can find a good one
@@mikesunboxing thanks for answering, I'm looking to add another ssd to my only m2 slot motherboard, as my main ssd is m2 sata seems like Dual M.2 PCIe Adapter, M.2 NVME Hard Disk Drive (M Key) o M.2 SATA Hard Disk Drive (B Key) is the answer , the pity is that the new added nvme will be on a sata cable 🤔
Hi Mike, thank you for the helpfull video. Could you please help me out with this matter. So i have the same motherboard with a 4060 GPU. I just purchased a NVME 1TB ssd and im trying to add that to expand my storage but the thing is the GPU is HUGE and i cant install that adapter there. is there any other solution i could do to get the same results and speed please. thank you so much!
you could maybe use a pcie extension cable to use the card in a lower slot
@ thank you for responding. So i checked but the motherboard does not have another slot where i can add the ssd adapter so i will have to use pcie x1 adapter which sucks. A520m pro is the motherboard i got by MSI
i only have 1 slot big enough and its currently occupied by my GPU. I however do have a spot on the motherboard labeled m.2 but it looks like there is no connector soldered on? How can I get one

sorry my motherboard is B460M-DS3H-AC. do you think I could do the same that you did in the video?
no you can't unless you don't use a GPU
Hi, im no tech person, would something like this work in a acer xc-1660? I'm desperately trying to add more storage. The part you use looks like it maybe too big for my unit as it is smaller. Many Thanks
It should do but will need to use the half height bracket
Maybe I'm stupid, but I don't have this option for "unallocated." I bought a Samsung 980 Pro 2TB with the Sabrent NVMe M.2 SSD to PCIe X16 / X8 / X4 Card with Aluminium Heatsink (EC-PCIE). I'm using the MSI B550 Tomahawk and have it plugged into the second PCIe slot. Not sure what's wrong

any solutions to do this on laptops? Because some laptops are now coming with one slot. yes I'm looking at you Dell G16!
not that i am aware of at the moment sorry
But that's the GPU slot tho, not available.
Is 500GB the limit ssd for this kind of method or can i buy an M.2 SSD up to 2TB or more?
4TB is the limit as far as i can see at the moment
@@mikesunboxing Thank You my Gigabyte motherboard only had 1 m.2 slot.
Will these expansions affect the GPU? I have two NVMEs installed already and want a third. I bought an expansion card. I don't want to cause any issues. Suggestions?
depends on the motherboard and processor, there are only a certain amount of pcie lanes that can be used
@mikesunboxing 5900x and a 3090. I've already used up the two nvme slots, so I bought and expansion for PCIE. Thanks for answering me! Could really use help.

Hi Mike, all this new tech is messing with my head lol. i have an asus prime z370-aII board and running my win10 on my m.2 slot. i also run a couple of hdd's that lag when looking up files. i do have the pci m.2 slot but is this purely for storage or can i use it to speed up my system? i have intel optane slot also but that already appears end of life
it depends where your lag is coming from really. any system with a mechanical drive will experience some lag with HDD as they go into power saving mode and the wake time causes a lag
I have a asus prime a520m-k motherboard with a RTX 2060 installed. How do I add an additional m 2 drive?
if you are already using the primary m.2 slot that is all you can do, you will have to use SATA drives for expansion
@@mikesunboxing ah ok. Thanks. Guess it's just a pitfall of purchasing a prebuilt 😞

No problem!
will this adapter work when I used all of my M2 slots on the mainboard and want to add a 3rd NVMe SSD? MSI B550 Tomahawk
you will be sharing a lot of lanes so don't expect full speeds
Nah i just tested with axagon pcie adapter, if I put in the 2nd pcie slot the adapter and using the mobos slot (which shared with the pcie speed) it wont recognize the adapter's ssd in one time. Separetely working with no issues.
If I add 2 more nvme pcie slots to the PC will disable ?
it might
Do you have, or know of a video, about disk management? I feel like I overcomplicate it.
I currently have 3 drives, 2 SSD and a hdd. I have one SSD that is just my OS. Another that is only 250gb so I put what I'm currently playing on that, and the HDD is 1 TB, so I put everything else there.
But I've been wondering if I had a TB SSD would it matter if I had everything on one drive or if I should still separate the os from other stuff.
i just made a video on it, specifically from this comment, keep watching to find out more 👍🔥
@@mikesunboxing sweet, thanks!
@@SifuJavis Mike is editing it right now!
For these drives speed is less of an issue.
it can only use one drive, but there are dual and quad versions on amazon
My GPU is too big. The expension won't fit because of that. You know any other method to have some extra space but with high speeds? I really don't want to use sata. That's really slow I heard.
no normal pc use you won't really notice the difference between SATA SSD and NVME
I wonder if you could boot from a NVME M.2, If you could. Would save so many old PCs that are Slow. 🙂
yes some motherboards will support that feature, but it isn't guaranteed
mine won't recognize in windows and bios. Motherboard B850M-E
not sure if that is a typo with the motherboard model
No puede colocar PCI-Ex1??
no sorry
For me it doesn't show new volume option, just covert to dynamic disk or mbr. but thank you! was wondering how to install something similar for the first time. Update: had to left click next to it and then it showed option for new simple volume :)
glad you got there in the end
