I'm watching how to install this. It seems not to difficult. I've done electrical work before, but never did a 30amp. It's a little scary but my laundry is overtaking my laundry room. Thanks for this information. Straight forward and to the point.

Great video, as always. To get more views and more Likes, you might want to consider eliminating empty phraseology such as : "Without further ado...", "That being said...", "as you can see...", "now what I'm gonna do...", "I'm gonna go ahead and...". Getting rid of such verbal fluff will make your already good videos extra sharp and even more engaging and watchable.

Perfect! Thank you! Do you have an opinion on the adapters for the newer 4 prong dryer cord (female side) to 3 prong (male) that plugs into the existing older style nema 10 outlet? I purchased the adapter to use temporarily, I am interested in your opinion on whether or not my new samsung front load set (dryer) will be protected enough with the adapter cord? I have to see if the home owner will be willing to allow me to make the change to a new 4 prong receptacle and if the wiring is 10-2 or 10-3 as you also mentioned.

My condo, new in 1993, originally had a 3 prong outlet. However, the dryer I had at that time required 120V, so I removed the 240V outlet, put a Marrette over both ends of the red wire, moved the black wire to a new 15A breaker and installed a Hubble heavy duty 120V outlet. That dryer died recently, so I put the 240V wiring back for the new dryer, but this time installing a 4 prong outlet. I used the heavy duty Hubble outlet because in my previous home, the standard grade outlet showed signs of overheating.

As always, such a precise video about the type of outlet. We are required in most areas with a 4 prog outlet unless an existing one is a 3 prong and if course matching up with the unit installed. I was told that some units require 4 prong depending on the features etc. Always check with the seller of the dryer unit and the codes for sure.
    Thank you again Josh. 👍🏻👍🏻

Good point David. If it already exist in the house then 3 prong is good to go. I have never used a three prong cord so I’m not sure if they are universal. Thanks a lot for stopping by!

    • @davidharrison3074
      @davidharrison3074 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TheExcellentLaborer that's why I let people know to ask the sales person what the unit calls for. It gets delivered then to find out it won't work. I had a customer tell me to just install the 4 prong on a 3 wire circuit and I won't take the responsibility. I've run a new line before for a unit in a basement that was all exposed which is okay with the right breaker as well.
That's why I suggest the simple questions for people to ask if I can't be there to help. Take care Josh

the same 3 vs 4 prong 240 outlet issue holds true with electric ranges. Only differences are the breaker is usually 50 amps, 6-3 with ground Romex wire is used and the L shaped neutral plug moves to a straight one.

My daughter just had a house built in Texas and the ground is on bottom of the 4 prong outlet with the neutral on top. Which I think NFPA 70 started recommending ground on bottom in case the cord came partially out due to something falling on it, the ground would stay in? The way hers is positioned with ground on bottom it puts the dryer cord in a awkward position? Have they started making dryer cords to confirm to this position?

  • @TexasEngineer

I have a cir 1978 house with 3 prong outlets in the dryer and oven. The neutral is only required for 120v service. The true difference between a neutral and a ground is which bar they are landed on in the breaker box. Since they are bonded together they are electrically identical. The installation details for the dryer 3 wire plug installation calls for the third wire, the neutral on the plug to be connected to the ground on the outlet. I am not comfortable if the dryer is using the ground to create 120v service instead of an internal 240/120 transformer. I have checked my old oven and the power supply did use a 240/120 transformer for the oven light. The circuit board was powered by a 240v to DC circuit.

    Excellent video. I
Might add if some dont know. The gold/brass terminals are always for the hot wires even on regular outlets. Brass does not expand and contract like other metals so it is used for the hot wires. The neutral wire
Always goes to the silver terminal. this is an easy way to verify the correct terminal for hots. NOTE. this is important for polarity on 110 outlets also. On the front of the 110 outlet the brass will be the smallest slit the plug goes into. I believe this is done to save money since brass is more expensive then the silver

(06:55) My house has a three-prong dryer outlet.
The house was built in 1989 by my family.
Tonight we had to do some emergency plumbing where our outdoor spigot froze and busted and was leaking into the house. We pulled out the dryer, because the spigot/pipe exits the house behind it, and we found out we have to replace the dryer outlet. It didn't get wet, but It's been burning and the prongs on the pigtail are corroded.

I have a 3 prong house bought the 4 prong same one in this video but now realized the house doesn’t have a green ground wire. Only has 3 wires to put into a 4 prong. My solution I’m thinking is buy an extra wire and jump it from the white wire neutral to the green ground.
Because currently have no power out of the 4 prong with the 3 wires hooked into it

If you jump the neutral to ground on the box you'll energize the box... just pull a new wire

@@LeilaniWhite don't forget to make sure you are using 10/3 wire for the outlet. Good luck!!!

You need a ground from the panel to your receptacle to go into the back of the outlet.

Unfortunately, my outlet didn’t have color coded screws. They were all the same colour. Silver. But I followed the diagram on the box which showed which color wire goes where. Thanks. 😊

We like to use six gauge wire for the 50 amp electric stoves. I hope that helps!

I was told that in the 3-prong setup the ground and neutral are bonded in the dryer and it is okay because they are bonded at the main electrical panel also. This doesn't make sense to me because it seems similar to an illegal bootleg ground in a 120v receptacle and will introduce objectionable current. Please advise.
