    I was formally trained as an electrician in the 1960’s. This is by far the best explanation of three way switches I have ever seen. Not surprised. We used some of you videos in my former employer’s (I’m retired now) online training courses. All very well done.

      I have to agree,easiest to follow.When I was in high school we were taught the easiest and simplest method was power to light,rather than switch box.Today it is different with types of lights and switches with dimmers,BUT I wired everything the way I was taught in my own home.Old school or Bull Headed,call it what you want.THANK YOU for posting my friend.

      I've been an AC Tech for over 30 years, and this guy reminds me of some of my instructors back in the 80's. Don't do work that is not needed, and do it correctly the first time, and you'll have a great career.

    I’ve watched over 20 different dudes explaining hooking up 3 way and they always start half way through or they go to fast, they don’t show and explain where flow goes every wire every step of the way. I had only 14/2 hooked up between my 2 )3-way switches on 1 light. Had 3 different 14/2 wires coming into secondary switch. Holy fuck was I lost because everyone on TH-cam shows you with a 14/3 going from switch to switch. Because of your video and my multimeter I was able to determine it was the first example and was able to safely hook up my new led dimmer in the secondary switch. My wife is so happy and so am I with my new slim disk led lights. Thank you thank you thank you for being an actual teacher who covers everything include materials needed and then finally a label of wires.

    This is a great video explaining 3 way switches. I have a few other comments to add. In your presentation you say put the black travelers on the left screws and the red travelers on the right screws. Left or right doesn't matter, you just need a pair of wires between the traveler screws. Also, looking at the 4:42 point in the presentation, I prefer using the black wire going to the right switch to connect the common terminal to the light fixture. Then use the white wire to the right switch as a traveler by connecting it to the black traveler from the left switch at the light box. Doing it that way, you will have a black wire and a white wire to hook to your light fixture.

    Found it. I’m installing a new light switch on the other side of the light and at 4:00 I found the exact circuit I’d be wiring. I ran wire for 3 years but I didn’t do any finish wiring so I didn’t know to cap the black and white at the light box but I knew that eventually in my circuit Common would be Hot. This explained EVERYTHING I needed to know to do the job. I enjoy many of your videos as a new technician training myself in all trades at a very large apartment complex. My bosses know I have the ability to troubleshoot so I’ve been forced to learn on my own. Well partially on my own thanks to Grandpa TH-cam and all his infinite wisdom. Thanks for the video and to all of you who produce boring ass content like this lmao.

    I think I know why I was confused the other night. In class, they don't issue out individual wires. So in my mind, I was asking about the individual wires as I see here. Maybe on your next tutorial video mention 14/3 or 14/2 wires. Or show how they're wrapped in isulation. I had a major brain dump the other. But keep up the great work though, definitely learning a lot from your channel.

    Technically the second method and third methods are no longer legal. As per the NEC 2011 404.2(C), All switch boxes must have a Grounded/Neutral/White conductor in the box. Unless you want to spend the money on 4-Wire just wire it up using the first method. They did this due to the new presence of electronic switches. There are 2 exceptions, the first is if the box is attached to a raceway that could accommodate another wire, the neutral, at another point and not be a breach of their being too many wires in the conduit. The other exception is if the area behind the box is readily accessible without chipping away at the wall.

    • @sunnyjerry
      @sunnyjerry 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      [Method1]
      PRO: Always has a neutral wire in Switch Box to comply with NEC code for newer types of Switch which need neutral wire plugged into Switch.
      CON: May need to spend extra money for 14/2 wire from Switch Box2 to Light
      [Method2]
      PRO: May save a little bit by not spending money on extra 14/2 wire from Switch Box2 to Light.
      CON: (1) Generally, may not save too much on wires because it needs 14/3 wire from Switch Box1 to Light then to Switch Box2, and this whole route is generally longer than direct route from Switch Box1 to Switch Box2, and 14/3 wire is more expensive than 14/2 wire. (2) Does not have a neutral wire in Switch Box to comply with NEC code for newer types of Switch which need neutral wire plugged into Switch.
      [Method3]
      PRO: May save a little bit money on 14/2 wire under certain location placement.
      CON: (1) To start circuit from a Light to Switch Box, instead of from Switch Box to a light is less intuitive/less common. (2) Does not have a neutral wire in Switch Box to comply with NEC code for newer types of Switch which need neutral wire plugged into Switch.

    • @usmarinekenny
      @usmarinekenny 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @TMWSTW1984 the 2nd option is legal as far as the neutral is concerned as it is only required in one of the switch boxes not all of them, but does violate 200.7(C) where the re-identified white wire can’t be used as a return hot or switchleg back to the light as the way he has it now there are two white wire attached to the light one being re-identified and that can’t be and must be switched with the black on the traveler screw so the black coming from the second 3 way would be connected to the common terminal and to the light on the opposite side side and the re-identified white would be attached to the black coming from the traveler of the first 3 way to comply with the code, and option 3 is the only one I saw that didn’t have a neutral in either of the switch boxes.

    • @cdecoro
      @cdecoro 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@usmarinekenny To be clear, it is acceptable to have the neutral in only one box where that box has a view of the entire room. The text is “Where multiple switch locations control the same lighting load such that the entire floor area of the room or space is visible from the single or combined switch locations, the grounded circuit conductor shall only be required at one location.”

      Depends on whether the third terminal was an A or a B

    This video is a good explanation and helps me a lot for a craft assessment I have coming up. The only thing I don't understand is why is white wire being phasetaped and used with the hot? Wouldn't it be more ideal to just use black wire the whole time?

    The first one is the only code compliant circuit. Per code You need a neutral in every switch box

      The first two are both code compliant if you can see all the lights from one switch you only need one switch to have a neutral NEC 2023 404.2 "Where multiple switch locations control the same lighting load such that the entire floor area of the room or space is visible from the single or combined switch locations, the grounded circuit conductor shall only be required at one location."
      Two does have the problem you can't relabel the neutral like that to the light. But if you use the relabelled neutral as the common for the switch and use the black to run to the light it would be ok. Kind of like how it's done in three
      Three could be made compliant by using a 3 wire between the light and the first switch and continuing the neutral to the first switch.
