    This video SAVED MY LIFE 5 years ago! I had been in a 2 years long deep dark depression, I had made my suicide "to do" list. Ajahm Brahm gave me the key to escape my own mental prisons. Committing to a meditation practice REALLY DOES WORK! My life has been AMAZING since following Ajahn Brahm and the principals he teaches!

      How specifically did you do it ?

    • @GregTheRushFan

      @@JaySoul711 That's the cool thing, I really didn't do anything, in fact AB taught me to stop fighting with my personal demons. I was set free by the realization that the past is a ghost, it no longer exists except in our minds (besides physical injuries). Once I allowed myself to "let go" of my depression and the events that caused it, it just vanished. Just try watching as many of his talks as you can, that's what I did!

      @@GregTheRushFando you feel more or less motivated to achieve more in life? Or do you not strive either? If so, what makes you get up and be happy in the morning?

    • @GregTheRushFan
      @GregTheRushFan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@JaySoul711 I guess I just let go of the things from the past that made me wake up and feel sad & depressed. Once I found peace then the motivation followed on it's own, It allowed me to feel positive about life. Just keep listening to Ajahn Brahm's talks and try your best to apply the principals he teaches to your own situation

      +Lord Byron - I believe, that once you meditate enough and realize yourself more, you'll be able to see 'the matrix' for what it is, and then you'll transition from being frightened (my assumption) to feeling mentally freed, at which point, I"ll gamble, you'll stop feeling restless, and you won't need this video anymore.

      Please know that Jesus Loves You, even though we are all sinners. Have you ever lied? Ever stolen anything ? If you said yes to those two questions you are a lying thief, and that’s only two of the Ten Commandments. How will you do on Judgment Day? You know that you will be guilty. "For the wages of sin is death” (we are all on our way to hell, forever). God does NOT want us to end up in hell, a place of eternal, conscious torment and suffering (Not parties). We can all live in eternal paradise with no pain and no suffering forever. "Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Jesus took our punishment for our sins. This is a FREE gift. For those of you who continue to deny God, "Since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse." We are living in the End Times and He will be back soon.

      Ha ha ha ha.... um, compare Buddha's teachings with the teachings of Jesus one day. Aside from the glaring difference in volume and insight, one does not require submission to a tyrannical dictator god. You will have a tough time convincing Buddhists that Jesus is superior in any way. Buddha judges no one, and helps any being. No one is going to hell on a Buddha's account. Moreover, Buddha provides the path to purify the mind. Likely what Jesus relied upon whilst in the east. Christianity is cheap knock-off of Buddhism. Good luck.

    I agree with him that in situations from which escape is not an option, you may need to find the good in the situation - to the point that you begin wanting to be there. But most situations are such that you can choose to be elsewhere, not necessarily because you're dodging responsibility, but because you see that you'd have more rewarding possibilities in other situations. If, for example, you have great talent for architecture, but instead choose the path of medicine (which you find only mildly satisfying), then you may choose to go back to architecture, because you love it and because it's your best chance at greatness. I suppose you can try to change your attitude toward medicine (so that you grow to love it), but architecture would be easier because it's already in alignment with your desires and talent.

    You could have kept the 10 minutes meditation. There are lots of guided meditations on the Buddhist Society of West Australia channel, and it's very nice to meditate together with the video. The listener have at least some opportunity to see how such meditation works, familiarize with it, or see how monks react to some noises and distractions. This is also a valuable part of the video in my opinion.

    The class A/ class B thing is not only an experiment that has been repeated many times; it's actually a common practice in many schools. My elementary school had two classes, Alpha and Omega, and the results were consistent in my school too. I was an Omega kid, in advanced mathematics classes as were many other omega kids, and it still stood that the majority of the alpha kids saw themselves as smarter and a lot of the omega kids felt lesser. Initially I was told we were sorted by 'what best suited us' but later I found out the sorting was random. Kind of screwed up that schools would manipulate children's minds and self confidence like this :/

    love expression: escape to the moment, there was another one, I forgot. I thought rather than levitating, meditating was the true way of escaping the prison, and actually you did answer, not meditation, but wanting to be here, could that be considered conscious meditation, I read on a dictionary that meditation was kind of like concentration, so we if we inject ourselves in the moment, can we say we are meditating? also loved the approach of treating the other side of schizophrenics, and not labelling people, thank you very much for all this information and advice, hopefully walking it will get easier as we keep reminding ourselves about it

    One reason that it's so hard to let go of the past is because the world at large, especially with regards to one's job, insists that we need to refer to the past if we want to get to know someone. This is the predominant approach - and on a certain level it's a logical one. If you want to know whether someone is qualified to do a certain task, you ask about the extent of the person's experience. Since competitiveness characterizes much of the world, people demand that they know what you did; your skills were acquired IN THE PAST. So the past is relevant to what you can do now - though, I grant, not exhaustive. I mention the context of one's job because much depends on and revolves around what your job is. Your job, generally speaking, provides your income - and your income gives you options, provides some degree of comfort which is necessary if you're going, as a layperson, to pursue the dharma. I would say that even in friendships, consideration of the past is not necessarily unhealthy. One can forgive a friend the harm he has done; the whole concept of forgiveness is dependent on the concept of the past. Moreover, realistically speaking, one can forgive - but one will not forget. So part of what orients your actions IS inevitably the past, or awareness of the past, whether you like it or not. But the important point is not to be dominated by the past, to accept the possibility of change on the part of the one who has harmed you. Indeed, as Ajahn Brahm claims, there is infinitely more to the person than the wrong he may have done.

    I understand about living in the present and not the past/future, but what if its the present that you hate?? I have a health condition and it makes my present/now horrible, also because i constantly worry about it. I actually like thinking about my past and enjoy thinking about my future because it gives me hope that I will heal myself. But the present reality right now I can't stand being in. How do you escape the prison of your present, the prison of your body ??

    • @mobiusloop339
      @mobiusloop339 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way I see it, living in the present also means giving each and every activity you have your all without letting your mind wander. When you brush your teeth, fully focus on that. Also, deal with issues as they come rather than worry about potential issues happening (very difficult to do). Focusing on each activity will help you live in less worry for sure. Wishing you the very best. Hope you are better now!

      You can you A method Buddha taught , as follows : using mindfulness .
      You sit or lying .
      “ you Say :
      “ illness is impermanent ( deep breathe in and long breathe out : 1 time )
      “ so this ill body recover .(breathe like above ) .
      Breathing in I know I breath in

    I'm in Fushun, China and having problems with culture shock and not being able to speak Chinese. It's been very difficult even having everyone constantly stare at me. Do you have any words to share regarding this? I know you dont need a "temple" to go meditate at but would love to try to find myself a community so my transition to living here instead of Canada can be easier. Need to learn more about clearing my mind

      This is a clear example of you not wanting to be "here". A new culture, new surroundings ... It should be an exciting and wonderful time for you. But from your comments, it sounds more like a prison. What is stopping you from saying "I want to be here"?

    It's true that if you're in a place or situation in which you don't want to be, that may well be your prison. It's also possible - and probably true - that the ONE WANTING is also the prison. How do you know whether the ONE WANTING has some insight or wisdom embedded in the wanting? Just because you want something or want it to be otherwise does not mean there's wisdom in the wanting. In some cases, a change of attitude, not place, is what's needed; in other cases, a change of place. It depends on the situation. I can see many cases in which there are good reasons for wanting something else or a change of place. For example, who in their right mind would want to remain working in a factory, doing the same mind-numbing shit day after day, if they had skills/or talents to be doing something far more fulfilling? Yet wanting something else may (sometimes) also point to some neurotic tendencies or may simply be a byproduct of restlessness and a lack of mental clarity.

      +Rajendra Biswas Life is suffering, the prison of ones mind is the time we all serve. Being locked in a cement cell is very similar to the cell of your body which holds your consciousness prisoner to the natural world of birth and decay. If you live life trapped by your point of view and locked in to a way of dealing with your problems, you will never realize the freedom you have to break through the metal bars of your mind and walk as a free man in a body trapped in time. Now in the case of a person who is in prison for a crime they committed, its that individuals ability to accept their place in life as a product of their choices and realize that the state of mind they were in before committing the crime was only a prison on its own, and now that they are free from their attempt to control the law they are able to let go of the world and except their greatest tools in life which are the mind body and spirit. If the inmates of the jail can keep an open mind they will break free from the cell of their expectations and be able to live in an environment where they create the experience necessary to not feel imprisoned.

      +Calvin Riley i feel our body and mind is sacred and evil and corupt people have there bad affects on us ...if u can keep ur body mind happy u can be victorious..but my point was that there are framed people who also land up in prision and also get more repressed emotions which is dangeorus

    • @calvinriley4177
      @calvinriley4177 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rajendra Biswas
      I totally agree, about our body and minds being sacred, but that same body exists in every single person . And a person who could be considered being evil is only a person whose is in a prison of their minds repressed emotions, which as we both know can be dangerous. No one is born with the intent to become corrupt , people are born into lives where you feel your options are limited and you begin to make choices based upon your environment, rich or poor, gangster or banker. You don't always get to choose the struggles in life, you do chose a path to lead you to whats next. Being framed has a great deal of suffering that can be used as a lesson. Wether that person deserved to be in jail isnt up for anyone to decide, its already done, the persons there. Image you are an animal in a cage at a zoo , you realize this cage is not how life is meant to be. Why did you deserve to be entrapped in this zoo. Its not right but its your path that lead you there, its wrong to waste your mind thinking about what you cant control. Sometimes you have to exist in certain environments forced on to you. Lifes suffering is the experience of your own mind. After you become a caged human or animal. You fait is locked with a key and your mind is being kept, living for one purpose, to wait . In life, as free man, you wait all the time for friday, for the weekend, for your lunch and dinner. Soon waiting becomes a trap. While you wait for all that life has to offer you. If you choose to be angry about their entrapping qualities, youll make things worse. Same thing as being framed. Who you want to be in any experience in life is up to your open mind. To be flexible and admit and acknowledge, you are choosing to understand who you are to be . Every morning you wake up with a chance to escape the prisons that everyone is trapped in , the mind and its longing for things to experience. Someone who becomes falsely imprisoned or framed has an opportunity to escape the trap of the minds attachments to lives illusions/ the outside world. Monks have a similar intention when they go in to temples and trap themselves away from a world that imprisons people in their material bonds that corrupt the sacred quality of the mind. The framed person could be seen as a Buddhist being forced into being a monk. The buddhist must except his fait as not only a trapped man, but a trapped mind . This is the choice in life. To Be Trapped is all the illusions of your mind. To become enlightened which is a gift that takes a very courageous and nobel pursuit, that demand very intense amounts of focus an relaxation. Going to prison can be an honor, to be able to sit a cell and become free from all suffering all together. Its not easy, especial in the jails where there environment is hostile and doesnt promote the mindfulness it takes to let go and find inner peace. This means the prisoner must be stronger and have more will power than a monk to reach from within and see how free they truly can be.

    As much as I respect Ajahn Brahm, it's a little simplistic of him to say that all you need to do is "want to be here". In other words, according to him, it's not so much about changing your job or partner; you simply need to change your attitude in regards to them. Sometimes, that works. But sometimes it doesn't. While it's true that even a menial labor job need not be mind-numbing, I'd still recommend that you leave it if you have talents and skills that can be put to more creative uses. Should you stay in the factory, say, you might be contented, but you'd be needlessly limiting yourself. Sometimes place and the job matters, Ajahn Brahm. And there are potential partners who are more suitable for one individual than some others are. If a man is born and raised in America and gets involved with a Korean woman who's just visiting America, that can cause a lot of problems which may have been averted had he gotten involved with a woman born and raised in his culture or environment. Cultural differences are important considerations - and these differences sometimes can't be bridged with simple generosity or open-mindedness because the conditioning runs too deep. At least for one of the two individuals. There are issues connected with temperament as well - issues which can nurture the relationship or spell its doom. All these things matter, and since they do, a change in partners may be in order.

    • @yacovmitchenko1490
      @yacovmitchenko1490 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, we're on the same page, Benny. You mirror my own thoughts on the subject. But that's not what the Buddhist monk said. At any rate, he should have been clearer; at the very least he did not state a balanced position as you did. It's simply incomplete to say that "all you need to do is change your attitude". It's commendable, but insufficient. If being grateful for the gifts of the present were synonymous with satisfaction, there would be no impetus to look for a different, more satisfying situation. In other words, it might be still okay to remain in a shitty situation because "you've changed your attitude" and "embraced the present". Brahm should have made the distinction between appreciation of what the present offers and overall satisfaction (or dissatisfaction).

    It always pains me seeing a western man in a Asian monk robe... Seriously, When buddhism reached China, it became chan buddhism merging to the local culture.
    When Buddism reached Japan it beccame Zen, again adapting and merging to the local culture. Different customs, attire, temples... etc. Why isn't it happening in "the west"

      TheKetsa, . People like you who cares about who ware what will never understand Buddhism.
      A monk is someone who gave up all materialistic stuff and life in common world and looking for Nirvana. The Buddhist robe (Cheewara) is a sign of simple lifestyle, simple maintenance. Matter of fact in early Buddha days the robe they ware is made up by pieces of cloths collected from various donors not one big cloth as cloths wasn't vastly available like nowadays. The Monk has to put those cloths together and make the robe. Even the robe people offer to monks these days are still made with pieces of cloths.
      What is your point? Ware a suite and tie?

      TheKetsa Your what comment?? You didn't have a comment but an question of why monks from different regions ware a regional dress.
      Ajahn is a Therawada Buddhist not Zen or Chen. Therawada monks ware the robe the way he is wearing. Zen monks ware a different robe so does chen.
      I don't think Buddhism is for you. When you don't know the robe or dress doesn't have anything to do with the region but the Buddhist chapter.
