Thanks Dan. On the 2014 WAW I just bought the previous owner put a triple chainring on it and road bike split speed shifters. I spin out on the present setup and am thinking of going with the double up front too. I have that same large front chainring on my Baron. I bought it last year from the same place you bought yours. 58t seems about right but as I get more use to the WAW, I think I will end up with a 61t. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.

Sounds good Jerry. Right now I’ve been very pleased with this 58t and don’t plan to go up to a 61t yet. I’ve been getting KOM’s and pr’s on Strava on a pretty regular basis.

@@danchaluejr Way to go Dan! Maybe next summer I can meet up with you and some of the other velonaughts on the east coast. I am thinking maybe about doing the Seagull Century or Six Pillars!

Great video! Glad we don’t have 10% hills everywhere around here.

Why did you get rid of the Rohloff? (I'm just about to order a WAW with one).

Sorry for the late response. Got rid of the Rohloff to get more speed and gain better efficiency.

Well it looks like one of us will be ready for the 6 Pillars....

What gearing setup would you use for 30° hills? The steepest slope here in San Francisco is 41°.

Right now I’m using a 34t small ring up front with 11-42 rear cassette on a 26x2.00 tire, which works really well. I was using a 39t small ring initially as shown on the video but found the 34t one to be easier to climb with. I’m able to climb everything with this setup, but on the really steep hills I still feel like I’m doing leg presses at times. I know one of my friends around here was using a 20-something front ring, though not as wide of a range on his cassette.

@@danchaluejr Do you have any experience with Schlumpf mountain drives? I was considering a 75t chaining with the mountain drive that would effectively reduce that to a 30t chainring. I don't know what the effeciency of the mountain drive is, but considering it's a planetary gear system it's probably not too different from the Rohloff.

hi Dan, do you recon the better efficiency with a derailleur setup is down to the Rohloff inner resistance or are there other factors in play?

What rear derailleur are you using to accommodate such a large range of gears?

Hi Ruth, it’s a Shimano Deore XT RD-M8000-SGS 11-speed rear derailleur. This is the link to it on Shimano’s website: bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/component/deorext-m8000/RD-M8000-SGS.html.
