    Among Indo-Aryan and Dravidian languages,
Sinhala language has *the largest script* .
Sinhala script is descended from ancient *Indian Brahmi script* .
    Also,
Sinhala script, Telugu script and Tamil script are the oldest scripts of Indian Subcontinent which are still in use.
    Sinhala has *60 letters* . ( Shashti Akshara )
    १) *18 Vowels* . ( Ashtaadasha Svara )
    २) *42 Consonants* . ( Including *Anusvaara* = ං and *Visarga* = ඃ ) ( Dvichatvaarimshat Vyanjana )

    Moreover,
    📌 There is an irregular ligature of *ජ* ( *ja* ) and *ඤ* ( *ña* ), which is *ඥ* ( *jña* )
It is similar to *ज्ञ* ( *jña* ) in Devanagari script.
    ජ් + ඤ = ඥ
    ( ज् + ञ = ज्ञ )

Tamil and Telugu scripts are not the oldest scripts still in use !!! First of all, Telugu scripts comes from the Old Kannada Script (Halegannada) which originated about 1500 years ago. The Siddham Script, more than 1700 years old, is still in use in parts of India and Buddhist temples across Asia. The modern Tamil Script isn't that old either, there are many scripts that predate it like Tamil Brahmi and Pallava scripts which are no longer used.

@@dwarasamudra8889 NO... Siddham script is derived from Gupta script in 7th century. ( Late 6th century )
So, Siddham script is *not* more than 1 700 years old.
Yes, Telugu script is derived from Telugu-Kannada script/Kannada-Telugu script ( Old Kannada script ) *before* the derivations of Siddham script and Kannada script.
The derivations of Sinhala script and Tamil script happened before the derivations of Siddham script, Telugu and Kannada scripts.
That is why, I mentioned Sinhala script, Tamil script and Telugu script are the oldest scripts of Indian Subcontinent which are still in use.

Many Sinhalese live in Korea. They look very different from us, but they feel quite close because of their common belief in Buddhism. They often learned Korean from Sri Lanka and moved to Korea, so there are few language problems. I live not far from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Seoul. I've seen many Sri Lankans(almost Sinhalese I guess) visit the embassy every weekend. Unfortunately, there were no Sri Lankan restaurants nearby, so there were not many opportunities to experience their culture. I collect foreign dictionaries as a hobby, and I recently bought a Korean-Sinhalese dictionary. I'm learning Singhalese characters one by one. Someday, I want to travel to Sri Lanka and buy books written in Sinhalese.

    For all the internationals here.
Sinhala language has a written version, formal version, informal version and for the modern generation many words are modernized and slang words are added. Different style of speaking is seen in sinhala language. But there is no big difference in words but the style of speaking is differ. As a example you can clearly tell whether the person is from a town or a village from the speaking style.

Sinhalese originate from Elu also called Hela or Helu language. Then after arrival from Buddhism during Asoka Era Pali and Sanskrit heavily influenced modern day Sinhalese.
Todays Sinhalese is diglossia language which means it has two types of language style called literary language and spoken language. literary language is formal and older version and it has many Sanskrit based words and influence. In this video used literary language because it is how used in formal communication such as in news, presentations, professional interviews and speakers. But we don't use this type of style in day to day speaking. Spoken version is mixed of literary language and loan words from Tamil, Arabic, Dutch, Portuguese, English and South East Asian languages mostly Malay.
Sinhalese Phonetic development quite impressive since average Sinhalese speaker could easily pronounce or write Indo- Aryan, Dravidian , Latin and Even East Asian origin languages without major miss-pronunciations.

Some of your statements are wrong.
      You should study more!
Elu Prakrit = Sinhala Prakrit. Elu Prakrit is the oldest form of Sinhala language.
Elu Prakrit developed into Modern Sinhala language.
According to many linguists, Elu language originated from Maharashtri Prakrit which is a major Prakrit. That is why, Sinhala, Marathi, Konkani are classified as "Southern Indo-Aryan languages".
      *Where is "Elu language" from?*
All Prakrit languages are derived from Vedic Sanskrit. So,
*Vedic Sanskrit > Prakrits > Modern Indo-Aryan languages*
*Therefore, you cannot use INFLUENCE word* .
      There are two linguistics words.
      1) Derivation.
      2) Influence.
All Indo-Aryan languages have *Sanskrit derivations*. *Not a Sanskrit influences* . Non Indo-Aryan languages like Dravidian languages have *Sanskrit influences* . That means all Indo-Aryan languages are derived from Vedic Sanskrit through Prakrits.
Sanskrit is native to all Indo-Aryan languages. Therefore, we cannot use "Sanskrit influence" with Aryan languages.
*Before the arrival of Buddhism, Sinhala language was here in Sri Lanka which is known as Elu Prakrit. ( Hela Bhaashaa ) It was already born from Vedic Sanskrit.
That time Sinhala language contained only Sanskrit Tatsama words and Tadbhava words. After the arrival of Buddhism, Sinhala language got many Pali words but NOT SANSKRIT.
Sanskrit is the origin of all Indo-Aryan languages. ( Prakrits and Modern Indo-Aryan languages ) The mother of Indo-Aryan languages.
So,you should be careful of using "influence" word while talking about languages. A one word can change the whole story!
Bengali, Hindi are also diglossia like Sinhala. They also have two forms.
      - Formal Version.
      - Spoken Version. ( Colloquial Version )
      There are two words.
      1) Tatsama Pada. ( Actual Sanskrit words )
      2) Tadbhava Pada. ( The words which originated from Sanskrit Tatsama words )
All Indo-Aryan languages have these Sanskrit Tatsama and Tadbhava words. Most of Sinhala words are Sanskrit Tatsama words. ( Actual Sanskrit words )
You are a Sinhalese but you cannot recognise the difference between *Formal Sinhala* , *Semi Formal Sinhala* and *Spoken Sinhala* . !!!
This video is in SEMI FORMAL SINHALA. Not Formal Sinhala. So, this is *NOT* the language which use in news.
Sinhala language in this video is "a mixture of both Formal and Spoken Sinhala". There are hundreds of Spoken Sinhala words are in this video. Therefore, this is not Formal Sinhala. This video is in Semi Formal Sinhala.
Not only Sinhala, but also all Indo-Aryan languages like Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Punjabi, etc have loan words from Dravidian languages, Arabic, Dutch, Portuguese, English, etc.
There are only few Arabic words in Sinhala language. Other Indo-Aryan languages have many.
Also, the percentage of loan words in Sinhala language is very low compared to other Indo-Aryan languages which have thousands of Arabic, Dutch, Portuguese, Persian, English loan words. That is why, Sinhala still contains archaic Prakrit language features.
We should not forget that we have our own Sanskrit inherited words instead of those loan words!!! We should use our own native words. We should speak "Shuddha language".
*_Do not forget that all Prakrit languages came from Vedic Sanskrit_* .

      NO! NO! NO!
Our cultures are *totally different* !!!
The only similarity is most of Sri Lankan people are Buddhists and most of Thai people are Buddhists.
Moreover, Sri Lanka is very different from other Buddhist majority countries.
Our Sri Lankan culture is *Buddhist-Hindu culture* ➪ *Sinhala-Tamil* culture.
It is native to Indian Subcontinent. Sri Lanka. Very unique...
*Also, do not forget that Sri Lankan and Indian Buddhist monks spread Buddhism throughout South East Asia and East Asia* !

I am Sri Lankan and I am a native Sinhala speaker. Āyubowan (ආයුබෝවන්) is the common formal frace to say hello in Sinhalese. But when we meet someone informaly we do not use as so. In informal way we say hello. Swagatha is a Sanskrit word. But commanly in Sinhalese we never use that words to graet anyone.
