I am a pakistani guy and I live in saudia and I have meet some sri lanka persons some people know urdu language and some don`t know and some of sri lanka persons tell me in his country there is a special school that teach urdu language . good thing in the end the sri lanka people are good people :)
It is nice and polite to make the effort, learn a bit of the native tongue. But many sri lankans speak singlish. It is their take on english. Quite useful.
You might find Ayubowan formal because you live elsewhere, but in Sri Lanka, native Sinhalese do use it. In the present times, people are more inclined to say good morning or hello, but a quicker version, if I may use it to describe it, pronounced ‘aybown’ is still used to greet. Btw, Ayubowan is not a simple form of greeting but means ‘May you have longevity’ accompanied by clasping the hands, palms against each other, denoting the wish.
I actually lived there until I was 7 and have visited a lot too. It was very rare to hear someone say it unless in formal situations like at a wedding or new years. Maybe it’s different in different areas though.
@@MihiriW Maybe. I, however, live here and interact with people on a daily basis and this is what I have come across. On the whole however, people use good morning and hello or hi more, especially the younger generation.
Don't miss the Buddhism. It is so beautiful. Such a deep kindness as part of their national identity. And the food is pretty awesome. They might tell you not to drink the tap water. I found it was fine. But don't create plastic waste by buying bottled water. Just have 6 coconuts a day. It is better than water. Minerals. And the king coconuts are great, but so are the unripe ones. Your body will love you for it. The coconut selllers will fill your bottle, so you can buy a day's worth. Abd the temples, and the sun, and the smiles. Have fun. You lucky human.
@@howardstrauss5166 Thank you for the useful reminder of taking care of our planet but I'm not really into looking for religions I'm more into food, nature and cultures. Regarding the coconuts juice, I'm afraid I will stick to drinking plain water as I have some health issues so I must restrict my intake of a lot of certain minerals and sugar.
Thank you for letting us learn some basic words of Sinhalese,,I would love to share it to my daughter,,for sure his father would be happy. Please do some more video about family and culture. Thank you and God bless.Greetings from Philippines

I will be traveling to Sri Lanka next month and taking Sinhala classes here in USA online from someone in Sri Lanka. Stutiy
What about thank you? Surely the most important?
Thank you = IS-THU-THI. The "TH" is pronounced like "THought". However, I find that most people there just say Thank You in english
Thanks, over there next week and like to make an effort rather than be one of those YEAH GREAT DO YOU SPEAK ENGALISHHHH?
