Bees In Da Couch

  • Bees In Da Couch, that's right!
    This is actually the third couch I've removed bees from over the years, never a dull moment with bees folks!
    I can honestly say everyone had a good time during this removal process, myself of course included.
    Old couch in a lot in New Orleans, "Holly Grove."
    Cam, the young lady in the video was clearing the lot for her father. It was overgrown to about waist height & neighbors mentioned there was this old couch full of bees.
    Cam called me & that's when the fun began...
    This colony is now at my buddy Schawee's camp in Gonzales, Louisiana where many of these colonies I have been removing the last few years have been going. The land comprises 3,000 acres so there is plenty of room for hundreds of hives to exist.
    JP the bee man is a Louisiana native born in New Orleans & fools with honey bees roughly 10.5 months of the year weather permitting.
    Thank you for stopping by to explore my channel & please consider subscribing if you want to see more & tell ya friends & family too!
    Hope you're having a great day cause you know I am!

    Hi JP, I'm a beekeeper in The Netherlands.
    I never had extractions like you show in your video's. They're always fun to watch.
    I might have a small tip for you: When you want to persuade the bees to get in the box a bit faster, since it's getting dark and you want to move them to the beestand at home, use a spraybottle to spray them with a light mist of cold water. The water prevents them from flying up again and since they're getting cold by the water evaporating, they want to hide in the colony asap.
    It's what I use and it works great all the time.

    Yes it's poly fill batting. They haven't put cotton in modern production furniture in years. Poly's cheaper. Cotton would separate as you pull it. I'm not an upholsterer, but I did repair a leather chair and had to replace the poly wrap as it was badly compressed. Watched a lot of videos before I attempted it and that's where I learned it. I can't believe how docile the bees are in Louisiana. You moved your hands over the top of them many many times and they didn't react at all. Here if you move over top of them you will be attacked, and never tried blowing on them and don't want to think about trying. Awesome video JP

    • @Charlesb88
      @Charlesb88 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bees in general are much more dosile vs wasps except for killer bees. But each bee colony has a general temporment that veries between colonies. weather can also play a role in how ornery bees are on any given day. He sometimes talk about a certain hive ofbbees he's removing being "pissy" because of extra hit weather, for example. Some bees colonies also react well to smoke which is used to calm them, as seen in this vid. So I don't think Louisiana bees are more docile overall then other state's bees. If you go view some of his older vids you can find some agresive/ornery/pissy bee hives he'd had to deal with.

    • @hommie789
      @hommie789 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Charlesb88 I have been watching JP for years and also keep bees and around here they are no where as calm as any that I see JP come into contact with. Here you can go without a bee suit, maybe, about 1/3 of the time but have it close as you have no idea what they will do walking up to the colony. Never seen a colony not react when you wave your hand over them or anything else, they very protective of things above as that is where predictors come from so a good defense is a swift offense.

    • @Charlesb88
      @Charlesb88 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      homie789 While It’s possible that some strain of honey bees took hold in Louisiana that’s much more docile them honey bees in Other states, I suspect It’s more likely IMO that environmental factors like climate play a greater roll in the local bees personality. JP also tolerates being stung more then most people, even most bee keepers, so hats plays role in our perception.

    The thing that always amazes me, in all of these bee removals, is how you guys manage to spot the Queen. Yeah, I know she's bigger, but spotting one bee thats, what, a quarter of an inch or so bigger than all the rest? In the middle of a big old swarm of them? That may seem mundane, but I don't think I could ever spot that. They all look about the same to me.

    • @JPthebeeman
      @JPthebeeman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It’s hard to explain but mentally you just get locked into anticipating where she’ll be & train your eyes/mind to be on the lookout for anything a little different. After a while even a small part of her abdomen or that larger black spot atop her abdomen stands out.
      Also there’s of course how the bees respond when she’s in a certain spot ie: grouping up & them forming at least a semicircle to face her. You tend to look for these visual clues.

    I love the way that some of your videos are practically documentaries. You obviously put a heck of a lot of effort into not just the work but educating people - clients, neighbours of clients, random passers-by, the radio dude holding the microphone in this one and the other guy who tried to gas the bees - literally anyone who is anywhere near you! Then yet more effort in getting these videos edited and online, educating and entertaining tens of thousands more. Do you edit them yourself? It's done really well.
    There are over 170,000 views on this video, which is incredible. Can you believe that? Some people might watch twice I guess, but even if a few did that, it's still going to be an awe-inspiring number. Do you ever sit back, imagine what a crowd of people that size looks like and wonder how on earth you got here?
    I am sharing some of your shorter videos on Facebook, hopefully get my friends a bit more aware of and interested in bees. The short clips are fantastic for that. The folks that don't have time for an hour-long episode can spare a few minutes here and there.
    Major respect from this English/Scottish woman, sir. Major respect.

      You have no idea how much I appreciate your feedback. You pretty much summed up my approach rather succinctly.
      My goal has always been to make videos that are educational yet entertaining & do my best to paint a story, the story of how the events unfolded, from A-Z.
      I know sometimes that’s a bit too much for some folks, many want the “meat” without the potatoes & all the good seasoning that goes along with a good story but this is my style so you have to do what drives ya, right?
      I do all the filming & editing myself & sometimes it’s very taxing but it is what it is.
      Thank you again for getting what I do & pointing it out, much appreciated! ✌️👍🐝

    I’ve been watching bee videos for a while. Somehow I’m only just now coming across your videos. You do a great job caring for the bees and interacting with people. Keep up the great work!

    JP! You forgot to tell them a big reason you save the comb is because it takes like 8 times the amount of honey to produce the wax. Comb is probably the most vital part of the hive. Great video again! Keep them coming brother!!

    We used to rob wild bee hives. There are lots of German bees around here (or used to be) and they were vicious! They`re a darker type of bee and kinda look smaller than the Italian honeybees. The Italian honeybees aren`t mean like the German bees.

      Tom Jones my grand pa used german bees as his guard hives at entrances. Dad stated those bees would light a person up.

    It is great how you are always educating people about honeybees.....You should convince her to attend some local beekeeping club meetings. though I know new people can get overwhelmed at a meeting.....of course, that is where we Beekeepers come in to help mentor the new beekeepers......make sure you are available to help and answer questions.
