    From an IRL Boom Operator, your approach was great, and holding back where you were was appropriate by the book and heavy aircraft(C-17, C-130) will sit at the 500 ft aft position before being cleared to contact. In 15000 hours of flying I have seen very very few fighters use that position and they will stabilize about 25-50 feet behind and 10 ft below the boom.
    Big thing a lot of people don't realize, is how tense you get when you are refueling. your hands will get sore even in a sim.
    Also when you get about .5 on the TACAN, you would turn off your radar. The boom appreciates the ability to have children in the future.

      Unfortunately GR doesn't do too many missions requiring AAR, so the muscle memory isnt quite there for many. Some of us however make a point of it, even if unnecessary, to keep the skills up. If I had my way there'd be more tanking - I even made a really cool campaign that at least at the start would require it.... but due to reasons I wont get into, its on indefinite hold.

      @@TimberDCS You just have to get in the correct position first. I just get in position about 20-50 feet behind where the basket is going to be, or right behind the boom when I call in and it goes through 99% of the time.

    I was surprised how active your throttle was. It was never still. I think that's my biggest issue is once I get stable, I forget the throttle thinking I am matched perfectly, but as you take fuel, you get heavier and must adjust accordingly. Keep that throttle jiggling! lol

      Happened to me. On my 10+th failed attempt to refuel the F-18C, I was so angry with myself that I shot the tanker down.

  • @Ironwulf2000
    @Ironwulf2000 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Transfer rate for the F-15 in real life is 3000lb/min. 6000lb/min is for large aircraft like B-52 and other 'big wing' aircraft. In DCS however there is pretty much one flow rate.

    • @Bsquared1972
      @Bsquared1972 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In addition, the boom would be talking to you on the boom interphone 'through the boom' after contact. From the tanker side we have a flow gauge showing the ppm...after contact we would call "taking fuel" when we see a positive fuel flow...when you are full it goes down to zero, and the boom will call "No Flow, disconnect NOW." We don't say "Transfer complete." I refueled many a fully loaded Strike Eagle during Desert Storm; when fully loaded out they would usually have to crack an afterburner on one motor to hold position when they were getting full. One other tip: "Precontact" is stabilized position 50 feet behind the boom. For larger acft they are also on a 30 degree down angle from the boom. Very nice job, Cap!

    • @Ironwulf2000
      @Ironwulf2000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My understanding is the lighting system was originally designed for B-52s.... which was the primary driver of the tanker programs initially anyway. Hence why down/up light indicators are on the left, and forward/back (increase power/descrease power) are on the right... to match the flight controls of that aircraft.

    Loved the video @Grim Reapers! Can't wait for the next video man! Jets like the Strike Eagle are Gas Guzzlers so it'll take a Bit longer than you expect because your burning Fuel while also Taking on Fuel. Basically, if you're expecting to be refueling for about 1½ minutes, prepare for that to be about Twice as long just as a Precaution. Also, I think you've got the Conformal Fuel Tanks on the Sides of the Engine Intakes because I can see the Distinctive Bulge that it'll have compared to the Flat Sides of the Strike Eagles Fuselage.
    Can't wait for more Videos with the World War Two Assets Pack and World War Two Warships/Transport Ships Mods as well! You, the GR Crew as well as Camodo Gaming and Spycakes are due for an Operation on your Shoestrings in about 1 week.

    @MrRaslenny2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for sharing your video, but I have to ask you being that you used to use the x 56 before your current setup can you share whether or not there are curves for the controls you can discuss with us x-56 users being that the x56 is so sensitive. When I attempt to try to clear the air refuel in the F-15 Charlie I constantly go up and down upon approaching the Boom. What can I do to ensure contact contact with the tanker using the x56?

    • @SomniatisSplit
      @SomniatisSplit ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's an issue not only with x56 but with every short flight stick with springs, the best thing against short stick being too sensitive is adding some curvature, most people find it comfortable around 25, but again you have to tune it for yourself, also on the stick itself you want it as loose as possible.
      An other advice I can give you that directly comes from the mighty F-14 which is arguably one of the most difficult aircraft to refuel in DCS : TRIM !
      You don't fly the aircraft with the stick you fly it with the trim ! It's the key element to air refuel, stick is only used to do micro ajustement while trim is what gets you to be in the proper position, if your trim is correct you should be able to remove your hand of the stick without stressing about deviating. Also your wrist will thank you, most of the time when you get sore it's because you constantly reajust the same thing because it's not trimmed properly.
      Also never look at the boom, if you look at the boom (or any closer point of reference for that matter) you are going to enter a pilot induced oscilation because your brain is going to react much stronger to what seems to be big variation while in reality it is very minor, and then you are going to try to correct the wrong input you just made, etc, etc ...
      If it happens just stop correcting for a second and wait the end of the oscilation to reset your pre contact.

    • @MrRaslenny2
      @MrRaslenny2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the advice I will definitely take it under I was doing something different before so when I get home tonight cuz I'm not home once I get my system updated I will do a couple flights then see if I can make their correct adjustments and take it from there, and I'll give you an update as to my progress.

    • @Gambler1-1

      I had the same issue and I never found the solution but I know your pain. I imagine you could do something within the curves

    • @MrRaslenny2
      @MrRaslenny2 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, sorry it took me so long to respond but yes I do use curves on my x56. The current values on the pitch and Bank is dead zone 5 to 6 S curves of 25 I leave the y and x axis I think is 100% I don't mess with that the pedals it depends on your touch shimmy your pedals back and forth to see if there's any movements before you apply any curves again Dead Zone depends on the shimmy when you look at your programming no curves for the throttle. Everybody's sensitivity and handling could be different from what I do my unit is fairly old I had it since 2019 and it's still holding up Karma but it's time for an upgrade I'm definitely looking at win wing hottas setup for the F-15

      Irl they can feel the jet and what it is about to do rather than relying completely on instruments. They feel when they are accel or decel, going up or down and correct it before they see it. Like a car, when you take your foot off the gas you could feel the car decelerating before the speedometer starts showing it and that feeling time is not there in dcs.
