  • Join me as I explore Caister on Sea, Just north of Great Yarmouth sits a village that was once called Caister-next-Yarmouth, is a large village in Norfolk and has loads of history!
There has been an offshore lifeboat in the area since 1791, It was used by a beach company to salvage ships wrecked on the sand banks. Between 1856 and 1969 lifeboats were operated by the RNLI. In the 1901 Caister lifeboat disaster, nine crew were lost while attempting a rescue during heavy seas. At the time it was said, "If they had to keep at it 'til now, they would have sailed about until daylight to help her. Going back is against the rules when we see distress signals like that"
This response was translated by journalists to become the famous phrase "Caister men never turn back". A monument to the men lost in the disaster bearing this inscription stands in the village cemetery, unveiled in 1903 and was listed Grade II by Historic England in 2020. A pub called the "Never Turn Back" is named after the incident.
    Highlights include . .
The Oldest Holiday Park in the UK ( Haven Caister )
    Caister Castle
    Caister Roman Fort
    Ye Old Bakery
    The Never Turn Back Pub
    Caister Lifeboat
    Caister Promenade
and Caister Beach where the ice cream van comes to you!

    A bit of History
There is a Haven caravan and holiday park near the coast. One of the oldest in the UK, it began as the "Great Yarmouth Social Club" in 1906. In the 1950s and early 1960s, it used to be on both sides of the road. Opposite the beach was a dining room, paper shop, sports facilities and tourist chalets. These facilities were sold to a property developer who turned it into housing in the 1970s. In the 1980s a brand new holiday camp was opened, under the ownership of Ladbrokes, which was later sold to Warners in the 1990s.
Caister's history dates back to Roman times. In around AD 200 a fort was built here as a base for a unit of the Roman army and navy. However its role as a fort appears to have been reduced following the construction of the Saxon Shore fort at Burgh Castle on the southern side of the estuary in the latter part of the 3rd century. The name 'Caister' derives from the Anglo-Saxon word 'ceaster' meaning 'Roman fort'
In the 1950s, a building near the south gate at Caister was excavated in advance of a housing development. These buildings certainly do not appear to be very military as they include a hypocaust and painted wall plaster as well as female jewellery, and it has been suggested that this building may have been an officer's house, or possibly a ‘seamen's hostel’ which may be a polite name for a brothel. The site appears to have been abandoned in the 5th century, but 150 Saxon burials have been found to the south of the enclosure. The remains excavated in the 1950s are now managed by English Heritage and are open free of charge to the public as Caister Roman Site.

Thanks for the memories from Florida! We holidayed every year from 1974 onwards. My parents split and my mum remarried. My stepdad owned Eastern Beach until the early 90’s when he retired but had been in his family for many years prior. I’ve visited since and have so many memories of Norfolk and Yarmouth. I can smell the chips on the seafront and hear the arcades just watching this!

Another superb vlog Tim and your opening shot is my favourite spot in the whole country, yes and I have visited many coasts including Wales, Scotland, as well as the South coast of England. My wife and I cycle to this spot and have our picnic there. It always reminds me of the final scene in the very first Planet of the Apes films when Charlton Heston rides along the beach on horseback with the girl he rescued and sees the upper arm and torch of the statue of Liberty rising up through the sand. A terrific location. A wonderful piece of work by you and thoroughly enjoyable, thank you.
Just noticed you have hit 30K subscribers at last, a fantastic achievement on You Tube and very well deserved, best wishes.

I grew up in caister, its where most of my family are from and I spent most summers on Caister beach. My parents had a shop in the old station house at some point in the early 70's. This took me right back, I used to play on that very Pill box as my Van was on Elm and then visit the Clubhouse on eastern, from that area you can even seen some of the Hotel foundations that were returned when the coastal erosion happened.
Oddly I never clocked that was a Train station there, my Mum would regularly walk us to the Ice cream shop/Chippy that used to be in one of the converted houses so I'd see it alot, these days though thanks to injury I rarely venture further than Tan Lane/ Highstreet when visiting the house that replaced the Caravan which the very thought of has got me craving a Plunkett's sausage roll and Tasty house R8.

Hi, think i would agree with you, my parents and me when I was about four went to Caister for our summer holiday which would have been about the time of the station closure in 1959 and after before demolition , if not mistaken my memory of the railway station is of it being close to the beach as it was then, would say the seafront has changed since then which would also explain for the pillbox being sunk in the sand, don[t think it would have been built on the beach but coastal erosion has been changing the coastline since them day's.

💖 Caister ( I looked into buying a 🏠 there many years ago - about 100 yards from the lifeboat station - but the 2008 recession put the brakes on). Last year I staycationed at the Elm Beach Caravan Park next to the sea. Never Turn Back is my favourite pub in the world - unfortunately, it's gone down hill over recent years, but it's still a nice place and the walk along the beach into Yarmouth is fab. Our family have a caravan on that haven site , great place , can’t wait to get back down here on the 16th august , it’s a great location if you come out of the haven site and take a right and drive for 10 mins your at hems your , and if you take a left 15-20 mins your at the sea front and town

@@WalkWithMeTim why does cost so much get in to these places ? Surely they would make more if charged reasonable price. And people can learn more about history. Sandringham I watched video eleven pounds just get into gardens😱 tho very pretty. But if you was local you might want go regular to relax if don't have garden be ideal.
