  • Today we are lucky enough to be joined by one of the most successful tv producers of the last thirty years in Andy Wilman.
In 2002 alongside his school friend Jeremy Clarkson they decided to relaunch 'Top Gear', and together they turned it into the biggest show on tv anywhere in the world, with a global audience of over 350 million.
However it wasn't always plain sailing for Andy; after school he found himself working at McDonald's before he got fired within 3 days, then he had a brief but ultimately failed punk rock career and another failure was around the corner when he tried to join the secret service.
However all these experiences were starting to shape the mind of a young Mr Wilman (as he's known to his fans) and contributed to him eventually creating the most successful British export of all time.
We discuss everything from Andy's experiences at school with Jeremy Clarkson, to McDonald's, Punk Rock, University, Secret Service, Journalism, his lucky break, Top Gear Magazine, the start of his TV career and his crowning moment in re-launching top gear.
We also discuss everything from Richard Hammonds disastrous near death experience and the repercussions, the creation of the 'top gear specials', the controversies in Burma and Argentina, the fall out with the BBC, the new top gear, that 'incident' with Clarkson, leaving the BBC, the creation of the grand tour, the future of the grand tour and Andy's biggest regrets.

Andy is one of those people who, even though they're low key, can talk for an hour & a half without being boring. I really enjoyed listening to this podcast.

Other than the characters like Jezza etc, the filming was always top draw. The detail etc was amazing.

I didn't realise how much of the TG/GT 'format' was Clarkson's idea - he may pretend to be an idiot but he's clearly very savvy at what makes good television.

39:10 - Before the new version of Top Gear started to occupy the Sunday night 8pm slot, programmes on Sundays were appalling and boring. I call Sunday nights the hot lead melting into your soul as you remember Monday morning is approaching and another work week dawns, and programmes on a Sunday used to match that feeling - until the arrival of Top Gear in 2002.

Yeah yeah yah, uh,humm...yayayyah right yah, yah yah. Brilliant,,,,yeah I know, yeah yup yah
If you don't care what he has to say, don't ask him the questions. Reporters in general as of late, try to project this swagger like they got something else going on or somewhere better to be. It just makes you look condescending. Watch from 26:58 for awhile and notice him trying to cut Andy's stories short with his yeah yah yeah shit. Annoying -_-

We'd been recording for an hour and he had to get to edit suite - still had a lot of ground to cover

The interviewer needs to learn to shut up and let the guest speak. Too many interruptions ruin the interview.

I was thinking the same thing, it is so irritating - people don't want to listen to the interviewer, they watch this for the interviewee. It's so irritating.

This isn't an interview, it's a podcast. The whole dynamic of it is different. It's more of a conversation between two blokes. Don't give the guy too hard of a time.
