You can spend 30k and think you got a bargain, but make sure you have money set aside for maintenance issues. I speak from experience, you will ALWAYS have surprises with an older car that only costs 30k.
As you pointed out, don't spend the full $30K on the vehicle alone. My money is on the 2007-2008 Boxster / Cayman 2.7 with a 5-speed manual. With some nice options (BOSE, PASM, headlights, sports seats, and sports steering wheel), you're in at around $25K. Put the rest in on a PPI, getting all the services current (serpentine belt, plugs, coils, fluids + filters), and most likely brakes & tires. That's a good place to start anyway - you likely won't need anything else for a while.
My brother and I both own 981 Spyders and 987 boxsters (.1 and .2 base manuals). Not that we needed any validation, but it’s nice to hear people talk about these gems. The discussion covered just about everything we love about these cars.
Lovely podcast! We are on the same page with a lot of these cars. I owned a 987.2 Boxster S (loved that car), a 981 Cayman S (not quite a 991, but similar), and now a 981 Boxster Spyder (which will be kept for a while). A great hobby!
I've never paid as much as $30k for a car. I got a really nice 987.1 Cayman S last year and it's been great. Oil analysis shows that the engine is healthy and it's a blast to drive. The interior is in perfect shape. I added the PCCM+ head unit. It's in amazing condition except for some rock chips on the front end. The PCA community has been really great too.
I just bought a 2002 Boxster S with 52k miles, with IMS fix done. For $17k. This car is a hoot to drive, all the performance you need for fun street use. Bore scoring isn’t a concern in the 986 cars from what I’ve been told.
We have a 997.2 Carrera S with the PDK. I wanted a manual, however my wife's hip simply can't do a clutch anymore. Such as life when you're getting older. I will say that when you hit that Sport Plus fun button, it will absolutely scream! Very, very fun car.
2019 911 GTS, I love the PDK in this car. Clutch engagement and shifting during parking lot maneuvers can be clunky. It's not big, but you might notice a less than perfect engagement. Anything above 5 mph it's brilliant.
I've owned both a 987.2 (black) and a 981 (Agate Gray) both base models and both PDK. Both were less than 30k and both were a blast and I still have the 981. You don't even need to have the S to enjoy them. It's all based on your expectations and desires.
Nice podcast, very informative. If I may, it could profit from adding pictures of the cars being spoken about, for reference and for dynamics in the video. I know all the cars mentioned, but others new to the ‘hobby’ might appreciate it. Thanks!
Agreed that PDK without the Sport Chrono package is not a "fun" drive by any means. PDK with Sport Mode is an absolute dream and drives pretty much how I would if I were rowing through gears on a spirited drive. Then you have Sport Plus, which I never use on the street, as it only shifts right before redline. So you have options, but you really need the Chrono package to get the most out of it.
@rennthusiast - great video! What an awesome moment hearing 987.2 Boxster S as the $30K choice. Nearly exactly 12 months ago that was my decision (with a manual), and it’s an absolute blast!
Just picked up a 987.2 Cayman S. Its my first Porsche, and its been fan freaking tastic. I had considered getting a Spyder, but wanted to make sure I was a Porsche guy before spending that kinda money. 100% getting a Spyder next. Great recommendations here BTW
I know this podcast is more based off 911s, but can you guys do one on 986 boxster! The one that saved Porsche, issues you guys have seen, the myths of IMS and bore scoring, it seems more information is now coming out regarding these early years.
Derek, as a 7 year owner of a 987.2 Boxster S I'll say you have a great feel for the car. Actually, my power top is simple and reliable -- I beleive the 981 with electronic latching is where things get complex. At risk of sounding like a stalker, a Porsche I'd like to add to my garage is Will's 991.2 -- the black combined with those wheels really bring it!!
981 Boxster S with CPO is the best purchase imo. Max fun at reasonable price $40K - $50K. Great car with CPO peace of mind as your ripping around corners. Good acceleration (0-60 at 4.5) and GREAT Handling. The 981 also has the upgraded interior that matches in large degree brand new Porsche interiors. Porsche CPO is the BEST CPO program. Porsche will CPO a car up to 13 years old and 124,000 miles. No other manufacturer comes close. Porsche gives you a 2 year unlimited mile warranty with the CPO. Go get the car and DRIVE the hell out of it. You will love it!
$30k if you look long and hard enough will get someone into a base 981 Cayman, that is a hell of a lot of modern Porsche sports car experience for $30-40k. 2.7 9a1 flat six sounds amazing and pulls great. I daily drive a base 981 cayman I commute with it, track it, take it on road trips, and drive it like I stole it everywhere, it’s a very reliable car, and servicing it is fairly easy with the right tools. It makes all the right noises and is still a very light car. Trunk and a frunk with tons of room, I literally drive my cayman into work and I work in structural steel. All my tools fit in the frunk, every day is a blast. Best $40k I ever spent. I drove the base 991, 981 GTS and 718 S, didn’t feel either was anywhere near worth twice the money, def not twice the car! Would have paid up if they were but they just weren’t, and I wanted a car I could drive without fear and load miles onto it without worry

You mentioned de-lamination of the door card on the 991 due to glue issues. I realize there are many videos about this, including some specific home remedies. What did YOU do to fix the de-lamination issue? Repair it yourself or have the dealer do it? I recently had a dealer say that my 981S needed to have the door cards replaced, at something like $3000 for the part alone. I did not authorize that, as there was nothing wrong with the part that better glue would not remedy. This also caused me to question whether they actually knew what they were talking about, or were just trying to sell an unnecessary big job. I might go to an upholsterer to have the work done, but I'm curious how you handled it. Thanks!

I agree with the PDK experience. I cold walked into a Porsche dealer to test out a new 718 Cayman. They had no manuals and offered to try one with a PDK. I absolutely hated it and like mentioned here, it wanted to be in gas saving mode all the time. The sales guy came with me and as we were about to pull back into the dealership, he showed me the non-intuitive way to switch to sport mode. Too late. Funny thing, I tested a Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing shortly after with their 10 speed slush box automatic and it was a worlds better experience than the PDK. They were about the same money and these days, the Cayman is way more expensive than the Cadillac. Yes, I know, way different car.
Is this podcast only about new Porsches? There are a lot of people who don't really care for the mass produced water cooled cars. Including me. You can get a very good air cooled for 100K, even 964 or 993. And hey, I drive a 996 4S because my budget doesn't allow me anything else. If I had the 100K I wouldn't even look at the 991 but go for an air cooled car.

If your experience with a PDK is limited to only one test drive and you only drove it in automatic mode (sport chrono mode or not), you're not qualified to talk about the pros/cons of PDK.
Honestly, I drove a PDK at pedestrian speeds on normal roads and it was terrible. I was honest with my opinion. Did I drive it on a track, no. That doesn't invalidate my opinion. since then I have driven a PDK on the track, it was brilliant. I just drove two more PDKs this week and at normal speeds (sub 50mph) on normal roads and guess what? They lugged and were uninspiring in normal mode.
@@Derek-Rennthusiast But if I remember correctly you did say you didn't drive it in manual mode, no? I won't argue that they are uninspiring in normal automatic mode, but the same is true for normal torque converter-equipped automatics - why would you expect different from PDK? This is why I only ever drive my 991.1 PDK C2S in manual/sport mode unless I am sitting in horrendous traffic. I "treat" it as if it's a manual car. Once you get into that habit, it's a far better experience, and it improves with time behind the wheel. I have two manual-equipped air-cooled cars so perhaps the ability to jump into either at any given time makes me more accepting of PDK - but I don't think so. In sport mode with the sport exhaust those amazingly quick near-redline upshifts and perfectly executed downshifts are incredible to listen to. I'm sad as well that Porsche is slowly killing the manual gearbox but if it's going to happen PDK is a far better replacement than a normal AT.
718 GTS 4.0 is the most car money can buy at a tick over $100k. Get one while you still can. 981 sounds better but 718 4.0 likes to rev and makes a lot more power up top.
Absolutely, but the 718 in fact sounds better than the 981’s, which sound incredible. It’s all programming and opf’s. 2 zip ties solve that problem…and then you can get the GT3 4.0 & 4RS sound when you add the BMC air filters and remove the opf’s. As a Spyder owner, I’d say get the GTS to keep the cooled seats, and change out your ugly front bumper with some of the $50,000 you just saved. It’s so good that even with a GT4 front end it’s invincible from poser hate.
You can't get a 718 for 100 or under , unless your getting some kind of rebuilt title car, prices start at + 20k more than 918 Gt4s. The 981 barely fits in the 100k category at the moment.
@@mattyp3119 agreed - a tick over 100k. I just had mine (2024 MY) delivered for 106k. It will be a barebones car with few options though as they increased the base MSRP to 99k for the 2025 model year. For MY 2024 the MSRP was 95k. I’m pretty sure a 10-20k mile 718 GTS 4.0 can be had for about 100k these days. 2022 and earlier.

Don’t bother just buy a Miata
