    4:43 as someone who collects Nurgle miniatures, I must say that it's impressive the level they have went to with the connection to the tabletop in even just the colours of things.
    The pools of slime looks exactly like the technical paint "nurgles rot" and the actual characters (the daemons especially, and the PM's) really look like they have been painted. The colour matching is perfect.

    I'll probably wait for a sale, not because the game doesn't sound good, but because I already have such a big ass back log of stuff I want to play that I might as well. I really wish they'd do something like this with Warhammer Fantasy. I'm actually knowledgeable about that universe, but it seems like most of their games are always 40k.

    Glad that the game is solid, going to wait for a sale before picking it up. After finally getting through King Arthur a Knight's tale on Iron man mode I'm feeling cocky and will probably try Iron man mode on my first run on this and see how far I get before being splattered.

    • @Shane2020xxx

      It’s almost doable, there is one fight that is weird enough that you could actually lose, the pink boss Munificus. Source: got cocky and played Iron Man on my first run through and lost to Munificus at the second to last battle in the game. It’s not “send another squad and try again”, it’s game over. 🤬😢😵

    It's a relief to hear a review, tier list, guide, whatever that finally actually gets how to succeed in this game. I've watched too many people half-get the tactical system and how abusable AP and criticals are. Great take on the game. 100% agreed with your complaint about the procedural missions being a complete letdown in an otherwise solid game. Soft disagree about your take on the research system. While I totally understand it is only to the taste of some, it does allow the player some agency over game pace that can help accommodate the random nature of procedural challenges.

    Getting past the learning curve felt rough (on standard) and I ended up restarting early but that was the best decision I made. Loving the game now, although the mission variety is very limited unfortunately. Combat is very fun though.
    I hope they do what Xcom did to improve the variety in what we already have instead of just adding another campaign.

      They could easily add an expansion to give us dreadnoughts or dreadknights, and add some mission variety in at the same time. I love the game and have like 70 hours into it already, but yea they could make it a lot better with some tweaks. And I'm willing to pay for it!

    I think you hit the right spots but personally, you were a bit lenient in my eyes. I'm not exaggerating when I say I must have done the same "eliminate the carriers / destory the bloomspawn" missions close to 100 times. It is by far the most repetitive game I've played in recent memory and if it weren't for my OCD-level need to complete any game I've started, I would've quit this after the first 10 hours of doing the same exact thing, again and again and again and again....

    • @scalpingsnake
      @scalpingsnake 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah... I have played a decent amount of Xcom casually (never finished but come back and started it a lot) and I definitely prefer the variety compared to Warhammer here.
      I fortunately have been really enjoying the gameplay once I got past the tough learning curve. Levelling up your Knights is really fun.
      Maybe they will do DLC like Xcom which add mission variety and whatnot in the future. Would be nice if done reasonably.

    Research gating story is fairly common to TRPGs. XCom does the same thing. And in a sci-fi story. It makes sense.
    The issue with the system in Inquisition was the Power system was Real Time based in a game where time could be passing much quicker in game. It created a narrative disconnect only a MMO could love.

    Good points here but I see no problems at all with "straightforward" procedural missions (XCOM built itself on this), though the amount of mission TYPES was too few. But also in this game the maps themselves aren't procedural. Ya gotta have both for maximum replayability factor.

    I can agree with most of this, having just gotten it and playing it a few days now. I find myself only doing around 4 fights a day now, it feels dull beyond that. While I havent advanced the tech to the part with the 5 reapers, I just find the fights real samey. You are correct there could be more variety. More enemy types, different map objectives, less reinforcement annoyances. Yet despite all that, i dont hate the game. I think its solid and with a little more could be quite excellent. There arent a ton of GREAT WH/WH40k games, but this could get there. Especially if it expanded beyond Nurgle and GK.

    Fair Enough... Its a good game definitely , if you like Warhammer 40k or if you like TRPGs , and even if you want to try something new still possibly good pick.
    The thing I didnt like however, personally... is that Legendary diff makes the gameplay much slower because it mainly increases the enemy HP, among other things. So it sometimes feels not so much tactically different as borderline desperation on finishing something in more or less efficient amount of time.
    The new DLC/Update made it even harder as the Aerial attacks from the Spawning plant things now hits you even if you are behind full cover, but the enemy still has a ton of extra HP, so its a bit frustrating, making a strategy takes a lot of time for just 1 part of a mission...feels Grindy and very time consuming is what I mean, wish this could be done in a different way.

    "I'm a tactical turn-based strategy genre vet!" -> Started on Legendary - got my ass kicked. Switched to Ruthless, learned what's working and what to pick early - broke the game... Switched to Legendary - broke the game and had a lot of fun! Overall a fun, enjoyable "action-economy", "risk - reward" type of "x-com-like", but in need of bug-fixing, performance and (some) balance optimization, some mechanics reworks (like giving additional skill points to your units, effectively locked behind having to kill your other units... Come on, WTF?..)
    But then first balance patch drops - devs broke the game in very frustrating way: all abilities much more expensive to use, actually good abilities nerfed or made a lot less useful through other changes, nerfed generation for resource needed for abilities, nerfed crit chance for all units (before - you have minor chance to crit always, now if you don't have crit% weapon or ability - forget about them), stunning enemies near impossible on Legendary.
    Basically game is EXACTLY OPPOSITE of what it started as, from "learn and enjoy the game!" to "no fun allowed!" - you do a boring plinking from out of the cover at enemies and once in a blue moon use ability to gain minor advantage. Still playable and winnable but hella boring and dragged out, making repetitiveness of the missions completely insufferable... And not very friendly to beginners since nothing offered to players in return for the major nerfs and a lot of random involved in management (instead of combat, like in X-com) part of the game.
    Wait until more balance patches, or a good discount...
    PS: edited a few minor spelling mistakes.

      I'm playing through Legendary Grand Master right now... it's still fast 'n easy. Just roll up with a Librarian, 2 Interceptors, and then basically whatever you want as a 4th class. Have the Librarian scout ahead, find the enemy, gate of infinity into the heart of them, have the Interceptors murder everything, and let the Librarian get a kill or two. By the time the Librarian is level 9, he should have ~20 WP, so with some WP regen he can get 5 teleports off. Add in a free teleport from Gate of Infinity, and he can basically faceroll you through almost any mission in the game. It's how I've won the boss fights, just yolo up in their face and have the Interceptors just drop non-stop crits onto them.

      @@c0horst Thats pretty much what im doing on newest playthrough. The passive skills to save AP on crit and teleport, high crit chance melee , focus support item and armor on interceptors + taxi-librarian and Justicar for emergency AP or act as meat shield.
      Still its limiting unit choice a lot more than before, when it was cheaper to supply AP with Justicars (or outright break the game with Librarian mass stun executions), while prior to the point when you get this critbot strat running - gotta play a lot more careful :(

    A simple example of how over the top 40K is. An Imperial Star Destroyer from Star Wars is roughly the size of an ESCORT ship in 40k. Their fighters are 3 times the size of a B-22 bomber.

    Warhammer games are not known for their balance so the cheese-ability is on par for the IP, not to say that it is good or bad, it's just part of the package. I think most people familiar with Warhammer see cheese as purely under your discretion.

    I loved this game so far, but its way too repetitive. I would like to see mods to add some extra effects to the warp surge.
    Warp surge was suposed to make every f battle unique and unpredictable, but it dosent quite hit the mark. A game mode where other player acts as a game master would be fantastic too.

    Overall, playing on Normal and Ruthless, the game was a cakewalk, on the tactical layer at least. There are some problems in the early-to-mid game when multiple Plague Marines start to spawn, but by the end of the game, your Knights get so overpowered with so many tools that you can't really lose. Especially if you stack crit damage and crit chance (which can easily go to 100% in the late game). That's true even for the bosses. A single Interceptor with a couple of buffs can kill almost any boss in one turn totally ignoring all the cool mechanics those bosses have. The only one he can't kill is the final one, and for a few more he'd need some additional help first. It's even worse on the second playthrough when you already know what you're doing. Though the strategic layer was noticeably more challenging, keeping up with Bloom spread and dealing with random events was fun, though the latter can be incredibly annoying.
    I'll try it on Legendary eventually, we'll see how it's there.

  • @xthor86

    Imo the difficulty is irrelevant when you get lvl 5-6 following comp: justicar,apothecary,librerian and interceptor. You kill everything in 1 turn no matter what. And yes advanced classes are a massive meh, except the justicar. And ranged combat i just stopped doing, ranged classes where underperforming like a mofo compared to melee.
    Besides that i totally agree, for me this game was average+. with the two BIG faults beeing variety. and how long each missions takes just because of movement in turn based all the time. More minor gripes is how useless some classes are compared to others. And after playing it for 30 hours, the best comp is always buff stacking an interceptor (seriously you can get infinite ap and wp doing this) and having a librarian as a mobility stick, both because its op to position perfect every encounter, but also to reduce the tedium of movement between combat.

  • @TheDominicProject
    @TheDominicProject 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    UI-wise completely agree, and in fact I think it's even more egregious because despite all the visual noise, there is still some information that is hidden, like ammo. Also having to zoom into enemies and your soldiers to get the info, and then not being able to cycle through them is a massive ball ache. This game draws so much from xcom 2 anyway I just wish they were a little savvier in what else they took from it.

    The following is not a criticism, more a sign of the times.
    I'm an old gamer. Back in the 80's and early 90's just about any game was $40-$50. Without figuring the actual inflation numbers, let's say that $60-$70 in 2022. I think about that every time I hear someone complain about the price of a game.
    Other than that, good review as always.

  • @PrimarchX
    @PrimarchX 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've noticed the programmed opponent would frequently make some pretty ineffectual moves (running back and forth then doing nothing) on their turn if you didn't leave them clear shots. I think the combat AI needs a bit of work. That said, there are places where you can get in a lot of trouble if you overstretch. I have yet to have a GK go down due to running out of health (on Normal), so I'm definitely going to have to play one level harder next time.
    But all and all this is the game I've been waiting for since Firaxis XCom came out. Can't wait for some patches and DLC to start dropping. I'm in for the long haul.

    I actually used my Librarians' team teleport ability to remove the slowness of turn based movement when not in combat. But as you get Librarian probably half way through or so, it's bit tedious. You are also 100% about the lack of variety. Due to the number of missions v. variety, the game gets much more repetitive than Xcom for example. That is my biggest issue with this game, it would have been much better with few more mission types.

    Holy shit if I has to 100% a game for my job, I'd resent it by half way in. It's an interesting gimmick, but considering your audience doesn't 100% the games, you're getting a less similar experience to them. Seems over the top.
